"Once Upon the Prairie" is a clean and sweet Western Romance, written by Lenny Davis. This is Book 1 of The Brides of Courage, Kansas, and it is the story of Jesse Bartleby, a handsome young cowboy and his group of men and women; Wilhelmina (Mina) Morlock, a 24 year old woman; and her mean and selfish 40 year old husband, Neville Morlock, who beats his wife when he is drunk, takes opium, and is a glutton, who owns a ranch, and has hired gunmen on his property called the Black Thirteen. The book takes place from September 1867 to 1868. The story and plot are really great, but there were a lot of wrong word choices and grammatical errors in tense, such as planned, instead of planning. I gave the story and plot 5 stars, but the grammar only 3 stars, making my all around rating 4 stars. I really loved the good characters, and didn't like the bad characters of Neville and the Black 13. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a book free from bad language. There are no graphic scenes in this book.
An immature writer. The villain is ugly, fat, mean and a drug user while the heroine is beyond beautiful and queenly in poise. The hero jumps on the warpath like a hothead instead of trying to personally negotiate. There is very little sense of the historic setting that have played a bigger part. In addition, the book needs an editor. The writer uses phrases she has misheard and there are other errors.
I enjoyed the story and the characters. I read other reviews that it was a modern story based on the story of David and Abrigail. Just had to reread the Bible story and enjoyed that, too. I like the short story.
Mina Morlock is stuck in a marriage to the meanest man in Kansas and one of the wealthiest. Jesse Bartleby is just an honest cowboy working for a living but mostly he is a kind considerate man and a Civil War ex-Southern soldier. Once Upon the Prairie is a story that proves we reap what we sow in a western romance and a story I enjoyed.
Was a great disappointment to me. I was expecting "romance". I expected them to have adventures , make comprises, start a family. Once Upon The Prairie was much, much . No expensive homey moon. To me the story was too short . Maybe it would be a good story for a 7 year old, just starting to read for pleasure.
It was a good read but would have seen a little more from it. It was a little predictable and didn't seem to be "real". I think with a little work on the storyline it could be a much better read.
I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting and different. I definitely appreciated the clean language. There's also a quirky twist I found interesting.
