A hidden scheme. Suspiciously pat answers. Can one untested leader navigate the thin line between professional and personal justice?
Essen, Germany. Chief Inspector “Karre” Karrenberg has no appetite for overseeing a homicide squad. Still grieving over his ex-wife’s fatal car crash that left his daughter in a coma, the veteran detective’s gut tells him to ignore all the evidence that it was an accident. But he’s forced to put his own needs aside when a poor young woman’s lakeside adventure transforms her into an unidentified body.
Willing to make risky trades for more information, Karre discovers the mysterious female was a high-class escort. But his attempts to find the dead girl’s client are stonewalled by tight-lipped suspects, iron-clad alibis… and a growing number of bodies.
Will Karre’s private tragedies blind him to clues that could prevent another murder?
Chief Inspector “Karre” Karrenberg heads up a homicide squad in Essen Germany. It's only a small team, including Viktoria von Flurstenfeld. There is subtle sexual tension between the pair but most of Karre's thinking is about his daughter Hanna who is in a coma in hospitable following a car accident that killed his ex-wife Sandra. Was it an accident or was there something more sinister going on? This is a overarching story line to his life.
But as a homicide detective he must concentrate on the present and the death of a woman who's body was found at the bottom of a set of stairs at the back of a night club.
There might be something lost in translation here but it felt a bit disjointed and didn't flow along nicely. Plus there is the annoying habit of people about to say something important and being interrupted. It happens all the time and, combined with simply not saying things out loud, I found these people frustrating. I would not like to work with Karre as he keeps too much to himself and picks the completely wrong time to reveal what he knows and what his intentions are. It's good to read a book with a different setting and I might read more from the series but stories that have a huge overarching story line, the death of his ex-wife, doesn't really appeal to me.
Wow, what an excellent book. A bit of a different read for me as this was a German author writing about German police. Their way of speaking and procedures are a bit different from my usual hard boiled detective reads. However, I quickly found myself involved with this detective force and the crimes they were solving and how they all connected. Also, I appreciated the backstory of their personal lives and how it affected their police work. I am looking forward to the next book. There is not a cliffhanger, but there is more to the story.
I've found myself another favorite author. Only one criticism - don't have investigators stand around outside talking about the case like Hercule Poiroit before finishing the job.
Really enjoyed reading this well written and intriguing book and highly recommend that you read it as well. Looking forward to continuing to read more of this series.
