As the new day dawns on Kyo and Anna’s relationship, things are the same as always, but also very different. With the future looming before them, there’s a lot to deal with and an astonishing amount of screwing up to do.
This is the cringiest ‘warts and all’ look at adolescence I’ve probably ever seen in manga and it not only knows, but revels in just how cringe it is. This has an all-timer of a masturbation gag that doesn’t involve any actual masturbation.
While Anna and Kyo superficially act very similar to how they were before dating, the changes are slowly seeping in and that adds even more awkward to something that was already awkward as all get out.
The work being done with these characters, all of them, has paid off in spades as the story has progressed and continues to do so here. There are tons of really strong moments that make up a fantastic backdrop for the main story.
One thing I have especially come to appreciate is Kyo’s genuine friendship with Moe. They have a real bond that’s been slowly forged over these many chapters and it doesn’t hurt that it’s now driving Anna insane with unwarranted jealousy. It also doesn’t hurt that Anna always shows up at the worst moments possible.
A good manga lives and dies on its little touches and this one is full to the brim with them. The way Kyo and Anna’s father discuss the whole dating thing is the perfect encapsulation of guys being guys and Anna’s mother slicing right through that is very really funny.
As much as Kyo tries, it’s also very obvious that Anna is wearing the pants in this relationship and the irony there is that she’s really all about showing off her physical beauty to him this volume. Watching Kyo slowly being driven mad is a great time.
Naturally Anna’s job becomes a thing, aided and abetted by a convenient excuse for her to turn into a gyaru (and for Kyo to be awkward as hell, of course). Whenever a story captures the ‘learning to communicate’ phase well I’m always pleased and this has been doing it for ages.
Oh, yes, it’s romantic as all get out. Or swimming in its hormonal soup, which sometimes muddies the waters. Anna doesn’t quite seem to know when she should stop and sometimes she does and doesn’t anyway.
It’s not the first kiss that makes the most impression here, but rather the second, which is surprising since the first one is off the charts good. Yes, it’s definitely being written with an anime presentation in mind, I suspect, but it works just fine in print.
The second one though? That’s the kind of moment that has an eighth of the presentation but just as much power. It’s the kind of moment this series does incredibly well and it really sings, ironically.
Much like recent forays into the equally excellent, yet far more wholesome, Skip & Loafer, this is a wonderful story that has so, so much to break down. The jokes are hilarious, the interactions are stellar, and the main romance remains brutally real and captures middle school fumbling very accurately.
Yes, fan service has gone way up this volume, which it really doesn’t need, but there’s no denying that what we’re seeing is probably exactly what would happen. Sometimes the story and fan service do organically intersect.
5 stars - ah, I just love this, awkward and all, which is also sort of its message anyway. A far-too-honest look that’s heartfelt and funny.
Some good laughs, some great moments for our MCs too. This is such a charming series. It is easily one of my favorite romcoms. I can't wait to see what happens next.
lots of building-up, never-ending tension that got you on edge, with hilarious outcomes. plans about the future pop up, and we slowly come to realise how the characters are going to confront them.
This is such a great volume! It’s honestly pretty impressive how consistent this feels with the rest of the series so far, while having a fairly big status quo change. I really liked the theme of this volume, how it’s about Kyo and Yamada navigating what makes dating different than a relationship. I thought the chapter where they try to figure out what each other’s physical boundaries are was especially good. It’s all very sweet and good natured. And the kiss at end genuinely surprised me.
And Kyo being king of the good boys is very funny. This manga started with him thinking he wanted to murder Yamada, and now that they are dating, he felt almost immediately compelled to get her parents’ blessing for the relationship. He wants to be an edgy bad boy so bad, but can’t help but be the sweetest little guy alive.

Love this manga so much. I love their relationship, I love it evolves and changes, and I love all the side cast being so supportive. MVP for the best sister ever. A 5 out of 5.
