Larry Plumb Is Still Here

Rate this book
It’s 3:41 a.m. and fifty-six-year-old Larry Plumb isn’t turning over and fluffing his pillow or walking with heavy steps to the bathroom to relieve himself. Larry Plumb is awake—attacking a new day.

Larry has been an effective four-term Highway Commissioner and Senior Utility Specialist in his suburban Western New York town. Before work today, he’ll care for his family’s pets, complete an exercise routine, decipher some poetry, and work on his fledgling novel—accomplishing more before 7 a.m. than most do in an entire day.

Yet, for all his competence, the universe seems to be working overtime to beat Larry down and make him irrelevant. His wife and children accuse him of being toxic, controlling, and out of touch. The work crews he oversees are becoming increasingly confrontational. And the town residents he has served with distinction for thirty-seven years now harangue and denounce him.

With challenges coming hard and fast from all sides, he must decide whether to quietly withdraw from life or prove once more he is a man of gravity, a man of consequence, and make the world notice that Larry Plumb is still here and is ready for everything.

Growing up in a three bed/one bath house with nine siblings in Buffalo, New York was a just the facts, assembly-line type of childhood. However, one day in the late seventies, well into my clamorous teen years, that all changed when my exhausted mom uncharacteristically asked several probing questions about how I was doing, what I wanted of life and how I was going to get there... totally confounding me. She was supposed to dish out commands and make declarative statements: ...take out the trash ...don’t come home unless you’re bleeding; ...every time you masterbate it’s a hundred-years in purgatory. Not ask me to articulate inward looking, reflective questions about myself. Self-examination and contemplation, was light years beyond my transactional existence.
Eventually, though, due to a certain amount of aimlessness and failure I did come to consider my mom’s questions and many more of people, time, place and heritage, which have become the basis of the novel “Written In The Stars: The Book Of Molly.” Seen through the eyes of young Molly Shea it is an exploration of the ways and means of 1979 Irish-Catholic, South Buffalo and an evolving girl’s place in that world.
Presently I am one neighborhood removed from South Buffalo in West Seneca, New York where I live with my wife, three college age children and a cat that hates me. I have a State University of New York background in English and I love trade paperbacks, quiet black mornings and The Ramones.

I am consistently on the lookout for novels that offer original and compelling narratives, and Larry Plumb Is Still Here fits that bill. This book weaves together a tapestry of one man’s emotional odyssey, portraying a rich mix of raw and tumultuous feelings that many can relate to.
Larry Plumb, finds himself ensnared in a whirlwind of self-doubt and confusion—have you ever felt as though no matter what you do, it’s never quite right? Or questioned whether it’s truly your fault or if the world has simply conspired against you? Larry embodies this internal struggle, grappling with feelings of isolation and blame as he navigates the complexities of both his relationships and his own identity. When it seems like everyone around him is quick to point fingers, he begins a deep and challenging journey inward, confronting the unsettling reality that self-examination can often feel like peering into the eyes of a stranger. What does the world see when they look at him? This profound question drives much of the narrative and sets the stage for his transformative journey.
The powerful story arc serves as a catalyst for readers, inviting them to uncover their own inner strength and resilience. It is thought-provoking, prompting readers to reflect on their own actions, motivations, and the directions they are taking in life. It encourages an introspective look at our responses to the challenges we face and the ways we interact with others. This narrative is more than just a tale of one man's struggles; it is an exploration of human nature itself, urging us to consider how we can learn from our experiences and ultimately find a path toward empowerment and self-acceptance.

P.A. Kane’s Larry Plumb Is Still Here is a poignant and often humorous exploration of one man’s struggle to find relevance in a world that seems to have moved on without him. Set in Western New York, the novel delves into the life of Larry Plumb, a fifty-six-year-old Highway Commissioner and Senior Utility Specialist whose once-stable existence is beginning to unravel under the weight of shifting societal expectations, professional pressures, and personal regrets.

Plot & Themes
At its core, the novel is an introspective journey through the lens of an everyman—diligent, steadfast, and often bewildered by the rapidly changing world around him. Larry’s day-to-day life is filled with small but telling moments, whether he’s caring for his beloved egg hens, facing workplace challenges, or navigating the complexities of family life with his wife, Maureen, and their daughter, Samantha. These seemingly mundane routines serve as a backdrop for deeper reflections on masculinity, identity, and the passage of time.

Kane crafts a nuanced portrayal of a man caught between tradition and progress, exploring themes of relevance, self-worth, and the longing for validation in both personal and professional spheres. Larry’s commitment to his job and his values often puts him at odds with modern attitudes, and his internal dialogue is laced with both humour and heartache as he grapples with his place in a world that increasingly feels alien to him.

Characters & Relationships
Larry Plumb is an endearing, deeply relatable protagonist whose struggles and triumphs mirror those of many middle-aged men facing an identity crisis. His interactions with his wife and daughter are filled with warmth, tension, and an underlying yearning for connection and understanding. The evolving family dynamics feel authentic, with Maureen’s quiet strength and Samantha’s youthful independence highlighting Larry’s feelings of being left behind.

The novel also shines in its depiction of workplace politics, with a colourful cast of coworkers and bureaucratic hurdles that add both humour and realism to Larry’s professional life. Whether it’s confrontations with opinionated colleagues or the thankless nature of municipal service, Kane captures the often-overlooked frustrations of blue-collar work with wit and authenticity.

Writing Style & Tone
Kane’s writing is engaging and thoughtful, striking a balance between wry humour and heartfelt introspection. His keen observations about suburban life and the universal search for meaning resonate on multiple levels, making Larry’s journey both entertaining and profoundly relatable. The prose is straightforward yet rich in emotional depth, drawing readers into Larry’s world with an easy, conversational tone that makes the novel feel like an intimate reflection rather than a grand narrative.

Highlights•
Relatable Themes: The novel’s exploration off ageing, purpose, and societal shifts will resonate with readers who have ever questioned their place in an evolving world. Authentic Humour: Larry’s dry wit and self-deprecating humour provide levity even in his most serious moments.
Compelling Character Study: Kane offers a deeply human portrayal of an everyman struggling to hold onto his values while adapting to change.
Slice-of-Life Charm: The novel’s focus on everyday routines and relationships creates a touching, immersive reading experience.

Final Thoughts
Larry Plumb Is Still Here is a charming, thoughtful, and quietly profound novel that speaks to anyone who has ever felt out of step with the world around them. P.A. Kane has crafted a story that is equal parts humorous and heartfelt, capturing the universal struggle for relevance with remarkable honesty and empathy. Whether you’re looking for a character-driven slice-of-life novel or a poignant exploration of middle age and identity, this book delivers in spades.

A touching, funny, and insightful look at one man’s journey to find his place in a world that won’t stop changing.

Larry Plumb is Still Here Is set in a suburban area of Western New York. It is told from the POV of Larry Plumb, a 56-year-old Highway commissioner and Senior Utility Specialist. Although his life may seem like it is complete with a job, a wife, kids and a home he still feels like there is some piece missing. Larry has had the same routine for years and worked at the same job. He gets up early, works out, feeds the animals, goes to work, and comes back home. Larry is stuck in an unhappy marriage and his children do not respect him. He loves his wife the best he can and takes care of his wife and children but feels as though he's missing out on something. As Larry gets older, he feels as though life is passing him by and is faced with some difficult decisions.

Told from a man's perspective, it shows how men often struggle between being considered too masculine and too soft. Larry has been told his masculinity is toxic but when he displays any emotion, he is made fun of. As he gets older and things around him change, he often feels like he is being left behind. Although Larry is a fictional character, I think that a lot of us can relate to the daily struggles of life and the battles we face. Life can be harsh at times, and we feel like we may need to change to keep up with the changing times or we may feel like we're stuck in a situation that we just must make the most of. I love that the character of Larry Plumb is middle age. I think it speaks of what maybe a lot of middle-aged people might go through, especially those that have maybe come from a traumatic past or upbringing. Change is difficult and complex after spending years going through life on auto pilot and not actually living life as it is meant to be lived.

This was a very well written book, and it tended to pull at the heart strings occasionally.
The character of Larry is very relatable, and it was emotional watching him grow and change. Larry is smart, strong, kind, determined, and has a heart of gold. Even though life Larry has repeatedly kicked him while he was down, he perseveres and keeps going. I think this is something that many of us can relate to as life throws us curve balls and we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and keep going.

This was a unique read for me and at the beginning I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it, however the more I read and the further I got into Larry's story the more I saw similarities in my life and other people around me. It was also unique to read a book like this from a man's perspective and experience. For example, Larry has been told he has toxic masculinity but when he shows any sign of emotion or feeling he is ridiculed and make fun of.
Larry is at a stage in his life where he should be happy and content. He has a job, a home, a wife and children. However something still feels like it is missing from his life. As the times have changed Larry feels like he is slowly losing himself in all the technology and new phrases and just a new way of interacting with people.
When it seems everything in Larry's life is turning against him, he finds he has a choice. He can shrink back into himself and allow the world to pass him by or he can look at himself and start to reinvent and fight for his role and position in this world. Which will he choose? Does he has the strength to uncover some unpleasant things about himself and make the changes needed?

This story really makes the reader look inwards at themselves to areas that could need work or change. This is a story about struggle and courage and perseverance and not stopping until you reach your goals whatever that maybe. It is a story of one mans journey from being unempowered to transforming into a more self-accepting and empowered person.

I really wasn’t sure what to expect from this book as it is the first I’ve read by this author before. The blurb sounded fairly interesting, so I picked it up and dove right in. I was blown away! This is a magnificent story of a man grappling with irrelevance, familial strife, and the relentless march of time. We are introduced to Larry, a man who has lived a life of remarkable dedication but finds himself increasingly alienated by the world around him. He has built a legacy of hard work and service, but the narrative quickly shows that his world is crumbling. The novel beautifully captures the existential crisis of a man who has dedicated his life to others but now questions his place in a world that seems to have moved on without him. His attempts to reclaim relevance feel both admirable and tragic. Larry’s journey is one of self-reflection, of deciding whether to fade quietly or confront the harsh truths of his life and the changing landscape around him.

This was a deep exploration of identity, aging, and resilience as it offers a poignant meditation on the fear of being forgotten. It is a book that speaks to anyone who has ever felt disconnected from the world they once dominated, struggling to balance personal integrity with the relentless forward momentum of life. I didn’t think this would be something that would resonate with me so deeply, but I am extremely excited to have found this. I highly recommend giving it a chance even if it isn’t your typical cup of tea.

Real and Relatable

I went into P.A. Jane’s book, “Larry Plumb Is Still Here”, completely blind. I did not read the blurb or anything else about the book, which is something I do fairly often. I want the book, plot, and characters to tell me the story. My first impression, as a Bills fan, was this was going to be a great read because of the location and the fact the writer insinuated that the main character was a Bills fan on page 2. I found that the first few chapters were hard to get through, not because of the writing, but because I was stuck in my own head about where this story may be going. I have to admit, that my first impression was correct and this ended up being a great read that I believe most people can relate to, even the most confident of people. Larry is a middle aged man trying to find his way through life with his wife and kids when he is dealt a year full of highs and lows and struggles to find his purpose and calling. Relying on old friends and family, he finds himself in the most interesting position, one he’d never imagined. This story quickly turned into a book I could not put down, despite my early, unfounded, reservations. I would definitely recommend reading this book, especially if you’re looking to find your path.

This is a novel with a unique storyline which kept me intrigued throughout. The story follows the everyday life of fifty-six year old, Highway Commissioner and Senior Utility Specialist Larry Plumb. Set in a suburban Western New York town, Larry leads a rather ordinary, even boring life. However, through the detailed narrative the author makes the reader feel engaged with Larry and invested in his life choices. Larry’s wife and children accuse him of being toxic, controlling and out of touch, whilst the work crews he oversees become increasingly confrontational.
When the residents he has served for thirty-seven years with distinction start to harangue and denounce him, Larry feels irrelevant. He must make a choice, to quietly withdraw from life or prove that he is a man of consequence and make the world notice him once more. Although not a lot really happens plot wise, a lot does happen. The descriptive narrative brings both the characters and setting vividly to life. I felt immersed in the storyline and Larry was such a well detailed and complex character that he feels real and is very relatable. I liked the fact this story was from Larry’s perspective and therefore from a male’s point of view.

Larry Plumb Is Still Here by P.A. Kane. This was a very unique read to me because it was told from a man, Larry's, perspective. It's the story of a man named Larry who has been the good old reliable man that everyone counts on. He's worked at the same job for years and every day is the same routine, wake up, exercise, feed the animals, go to work and go home. He's lived in a not so happy marriage and taken care of his wife and child as he was supposed to. As he has gotten older a lot of things have changed in his life especially with technology and he's been told he's getting too old and left behind. He has to make a decision to either give up or move ahead and learn the new stuff. He is not just good old reliable Larry, he can change and move ahead with the world. Larry is very strong and a genuine good man and he is going to prove to the world that he can grow and change with it. This book really hit home with me as I'm in the older working age where retirement is looming and the young people are taking over. I truly enjoyed this story!

Good storyline and characters, if you like books about people writing books and other turns with it and more. This is the book 4 you. I give this book 4 stars.

I will start off by saying that as a younger reader it was hard for me to identify with this middle-aged male character. However, Larry Plumb Is Still Here is a hilarious and heartfelt exploration of resilience and self-discovery that resonates far beyond the specifics of midlife. Even as someone who can’t personally relate to the challenges of middle age, I found Larry’s journey incredibly engaging and surprisingly universal. The struggles he faces—trying to prove his worth, finding his place in a world that feels out of sync, and staying true to himself despite criticism—are themes that anyone, at any age, can understand. The humor had me laughing out loud, and the emotional moments left me thinking about how we all navigate the pressures of expectations and change. This book reminds you that no matter where you are in life, it’s important to keep pushing forward, embrace your individuality, and find meaning in the chaos.

This story, as many adults can deeply relate, focuses on the story of Larry and his inner struggles along with his societal struggles. Many of us grow up with aspirations, desires and goals of what we wish for our lives to be life. But unfortunately these dreams don’t get to be for many and get trapped into the pits of surviving in life’s debacles. Larry keeps his own contentments to a minimum as his family’s needs and financial obligations consume most of his time and energy. The downside for Larry is doing what needs to be done but his own family considers his involvement as damaging, not in sync as needed and being controlling. As this conflicting nature deeply affects Larry’s intentions, he puts him at a point of contemplation of his next steps. The storylines are very relatable as well as some humorous undertones that many can relate to as well. I was captivated by this story in ways I wouldn’t have imagined.

Larry Plumb by P.A. Kane is a story about a middle-aged man who has worked hard, and has always taken care of everything and everyone with little complaint. Life seems to come at him from every angle possible and he has to choose to sink or swim as life grabs on and tries to drown him in feelings of being utterly alone. I knew from the first page that I was going to enjoy this book, and I was certainly right. I loved Larry and taking this journey with him. The writing was exceptional and I loved the building of Larry and his story, from beginning to end. If you're looking for a story that gives a beautiful perspective on what it can be like to look both inward and outward at the life you've created and find that change is still possible, regardless of what stage you are at in your life, definitely give this one a shot! I don't think you'll be disappointed!

This book, for me, was an unexpectedly enjoyable story that presented a perspective I wasn’t anticipating from reading the blurb. A middle aged male character, written by a male author, always has the potential to radiate a certain view point that can be quite alienating to readers. However, the author successfully navigates away from this, instead creating a character that is introspective and much more emotionally mature that I would have thought.
I loved the fact this booked had a middle aged character. Although I might not want to admit it, this is creeping ever closer for me, so reading such well written story like this gives me a better feeling about the inevitable. Larry was a truly likable and relatable character who was perfect for this story. This was a great book and very much worth your time.

Larry Plumb is a man who has lived a tough life, and his story is like many of ours. This book was a good read because it took me away from the fantasy world of reading and brought me back to reality. Often in life we can disassociate from the reality going on in our lives, tough situations at home with your spouse and family, work stressors, health concerns, and even trauma from our childhood! This story told from Larry's perspective is a true look at what it's like to live in his shoes. It was refreshingly tragic to experience in great detail the daily struggle of living life. Even though Larry Plumb's character is fictional, it is very realistic in the day to day operation of life, and I'm ultimately encouraged to see life differently and wake up facing each day with more gratitude. I think you will enjoy this book as it gives an outlook on life that is very relatable.

This book reminded me of A man called Ove and also the men in the Thursday Murder Club, albeit the fact that Larry Plumb is a far more serious person. Larry Plumb did everything he is expected to do in life. He has a steady job and a nice family. He has worked hard to reach where he is, he follows his routine and does what he has to do with utmost sincerity. But the reward doesn’t pay up. He has been charged with toxic masculinity problems. Now with the new changes in technology as well, will Larry withdraw back or rise up to the occasion to prove that he still has some mettle left in him?

Larry grows on you, a middle-aged character, which strikes a chord. The author has done well with the character development of his protagonist. In the end, we can relate to his journey and we find ourselves rooting for him. I enjoyed this book.

Larry Plumb Is Still Here by P.A. Kane is set in modern-day western New York. Larry Plumb is your average 56-year-old man. He goes about his daily routines such as tending his chickens and working as a suburban Highway Commissioner and Senior Utility Specialist and dealing with his family. Larry Plumb is practical, reliable and dependable and at the same time, questioning his relevance. With his family’s teasing and frustrations at work, Larry questions his life, identity, and place in the world. Larry has challenges coming at him hard and fast but he tackles them all with gusto. Larry Plumb loses himself yet finds himself again. This book is an honest look at the emotionality of getting older, questioning your place in the world, and then finding it again. It’s full of humor and love and I recommend it to everyone.

Larry Plumb Is Still Here is a heartfelt and humorous exploration of middle age, identity, and relevance in a rapidly changing world. I struggled a bit getting into this book, but I found myself wanting to see how Larry and his family, and those they interact with, will come to resolve the issues in their daily lives. Larry Plumb, a former suburban Highway Commissioner who is now a Senior Utility Specialist with the city he lives in. He is also a family man from Western New York who navigates life with a mix of introspection, stubbornness, and dry wit, often to mixed results. Larry often finds himself struggling with family issues due to his children and wife, as well as how he relates to a society that has changed greatly in his lifetime. This is a poignant story that reminds us all that there is often more below the surface than we realize.

This book has some strong views right off the bat, and I was thinking oh no, this is going to be filled with general overbearing male views, but it turned out to be the opposite- a man in tune with his emotions who doesn't deserve the way his family treats him! Even before reading the "about the author" I strongly felt he tied in some of himself into Larry. Larry blindly goes through the motions day in and day out, and doesn't notice his wife's descent from the relationship, he sticks through things most people would have left over. His eldest daughter has zero respect for him and speaks to him as if she were the parent and he just brushes it off!

Music was a big part of his every day life, at the end I was reminded of Rascal Flatts "Bless the Broken Road".

Larry Plumb is an average middle aged man who feels like he's fading out of society and his family. I felt like the first half of the book had a lot of unnecessary information and because of that it was hard to get into but I like to finish the books that I read even if I'm not really into it and I'm glad I did with this one. Towards the middle of the book is when it got more interesting and I wanted to find out what happens with Larry's story. It had me angry, laughing and crying. The author really makes you understand Larry as a husband, father and a person and because of that I really felt bad for Larry and a lot of anger towards his family and I felt like he deserved better. I think a lot of people could relate to Larry and I enjoyed reading this.

This is an interesting story in which I enjoyed reading. This is a well written story about Larry and how he feels that the world is against him. He has two choices: he can let his world swallow him up or he can show everyone that he is here and makes a difference. I enjoyed Larry’s character and what he brought to the story. He is strong, determined and truly has a heart. What happens with him is something you don’t want to miss. I enjoyed watching the growth of the story throughout which made it easy to read and entertaining as well. This is a fast paced, hard to put down story. I really enjoyed this book and happy I picked it up. I highly recommend this book

Poor Larry has gotten stuck in the revolving slump of life. Wake up, exercise, feed the animals, go to work, come home, drink beer in his man cave, sleep, repeat. Hi wife is disconnected from him. His daughters disrespect him as they feel they can’t live up to his expectations. His son is angry and distant. Larry feels like a hamster on a wheel and doesn’t know how to fix it. Then life throws a spanner in the works when Larry’s wife becomes ill and a new women comes into his life. This story takes Larry and the people around him on a whirlwind journey where Larry needs to step out of his comfort zone and start speaking up! It is a slow burn so please stick with it.

What a different story this was. The story from the POV of a husband who went through a rough marriage and was put down by his family. Life knocked him down a bit with some curveballs. He showed everyone that he doesn’t give up. I wasn’t sure I wasw going to like Larry but as I wen through the story I found he was pretty relatable. I was able to kind of connect with him as he pulled his life back together and found his happy place. It’s a good book that I felt gave a really insightful lesson on not giving up.

Larry Plumb Is Still Here by P.A Kane is a contemporary fiction story- a bit of a character study about embracing change/it’s never too late to change, reinventing oneself, self-acceptance, self-empowerment, facing difficult situations + challenges, dealing with internal struggles pressure + self-doubts, finding purpose again, and more.
This proved to be a bit of a thought-provoking tale, which I ended up enjoying far more than I first thought I would.
Another intriguing tale from Mr. Kane- looking forward to seeing what he does next.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, P.A. Kane!

Well this was definitely a different read for me. The author really brought a great perspective. I am not usually one to just read a normal non romance or fantasy book but this definitely was a change for me and I was pleasantly surprised. The author s able to pull the reader along with Larry Plumb as he has to maneuver through life. I like how the perspective of the book is third person and how the author is able to create the world of the book and really draw you in and keep you hooked. I would.d definitely read more from this author in future.

I think one of the best things taken from this story, is that it is never to late to change your life. It's never too late to elevate your life. Larry gets tired of just sitting by and letting life happen to him. He's done with just surviving. He wants to LIVE. I think for many adults, we can have the same type of feelings as Larry. Thinking, what are we even doing? Is there more to life out there than this? People closest to Larry have lost respect for him, and I believe he lost respect for himself. I enjoyed going on this journey with him.

Larry Plumb is Still Here By P.A Kane

Larry Plumb is Still Here is a Contemporary/ Fiction that pulled me in from the beginning and I had a hard time putting it down. Larry’s character is very determined and strong . He brings alot to the table and has a couple of choices, he can show everyone what he’s made of and make a difference or do nothing. This is a fast paced story that will have you turning the pages till the end. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I’m looking forward to reading more from this Author.

Larry Plumb Is Still Here tells the poignant and often humorous story of a man wrestling with relevance in a rapidly changing world. Larry Plumb, a fifty-six-year-old suburban Highway Commissioner and Senior Utility Specialist in Western New York, is the quintessential everyman - diligent, reliable, and steady. But as his family and community challenge his once-unquestioned authority, Larry finds himself adrift in a sea of shifting societal expectations and personal regrets.

Through daily routines like feeding and caring for his egg hens, navigating tense family dynamics with his wife, Maureen, and daughter, Samantha, and reflecting on his role in a world that increasingly dismisses his perspective, Larry confronts questions of masculinity, identity, and belonging. His professional life is no less complex, marked by municipal politics, confrontational coworkers, and a relentless commitment to doing what’s right, even when it goes unnoticed.

With the help of his oldest friends Mac and Burbs and unexpected moments of connection with the cosmic Dr. Johnson, Larry begins to piece together what it truly means to remain relevant—not just to others, but to himself. Equal parts introspective and comedic, Larry Plumb Is Still Here is a heartfelt exploration of middle age, resilience, and the unyielding quest to matter.
