Are the ones you don’t see coming. CIA operative Wade Sandberg is a man caught between worlds. When he’s sent back stateside with Erin, keeping his hands off her proves to be even harder than making the transition back into western civilization. And when Rahim takes his revenge by unleashing a devastating attack on U.S. soil, Wade will do everything in his power to protect the woman he loves and destroy the man who’d once trusted him with his life.

Kaylea loves to hear from readers, so please feel free to drop me a line and say hello.
Please ignore the tattoo (the cover is not apt). That's definitely a no-go for a man working undercover in the Afghan mountains.
…She'd thought about this many times over the past few days, and with all his rough edges and having been undercover in austere conditions for so long, she'd expected a raging hunger from him. The care and consideration in his touch shook her to her core, but it was also making her crazy. She wanted to see that need and passion unleashed.
Danger Close works just fine as a standalone. However, readers might want to know that the beginning of the story is tied in to Lethal Pursuit. And you should also be aware that Wade Sandberg did make more than a little cameo in Lethal Pursuit. Let me get back to the topic at hand, though.
He’d shaved, she thought inanely, unable to tear her gaze away. The thick, long beard from yesterday was now trimmed to a very sexy heavy stubble that made him look rugged and masculine. For a second she floundered for something to say. She remembered the way he’d watched her yesterday. Stared, actually. With way more than normal masculine interest. It had damn near bordered on male starvation, like he hadn’t seen a woman in forever. Just where the hell had he been, and for how long?
Danger Close takes the reader from Bagram Air Base across the Afghan mountains back to the USA. However, due to the dangerous events in the Afghan mountains, nurse Erin Kelly is considered a potential target and needs protection. In consequence, Wade and Erin end up in a safe house stateside. The interesting villain, Rahim, is still on the run and his vicious mind is already plotting the next deadly event. Danger is close and always breathing down Wade's neck, that’s as certain as the Amen in the church.
Sandberg has been working undercover for several years, and before that job he’d been in the military for a long time. He’s used to living and breathing the Afghan culture; sitting on the floor to eat a meal, praying five times a day, and speaking Pashto and Urdu are completely and utterly internalized. Working undercover also meant that he had to do some ugly things; things that could be hard for us to relate to. Some facts were downright disturbing and yet I found Erin’s understanding admirable. Besides, I don’t think that Wade deserved to be judged for what he did because in the end he only executed his job and had to obey orders.
I really liked the portrayal of Sandberg. He’s a brooding, reserved and quiet character. When he came back to the States, you could feel his inner struggle to adapt and the balancing act between two very different countries and their cultures was like a tightrope walk. Fact is, he experienced a severe culture shock. And being around a western (and sexy) woman for the first time in years, made his self-consciousness all the more obvious. I liked seeing him blush and I found his reactions very endearing and sweet which made his character authentic. Regardless, the man was in charge whenever he had to face a dicey situation.
Minor quibbles
Once again Kaylea Cross delivered a very solid and engaging read that included all the delicious ingredients I require to savor my military romantic suspense books: more than a couple of thrilling and action-packed hazardous situations, a villain with a very surprising background, a slightly different hero whom I found refreshing and very sexy, a heroine who could hold her own, and last but not least a sweet and passionate love story. Bottom line, I love Kaylea’s Bagram Special Ops series and if you haven’t read it yet then what are you waiting for? Go and grab the books!
Recommended to all fans of military romantic suspense.

Yet another phenomenal military romance by Kaylea Cross! Danger Close had it all! Great characters, steamy chemistry, exhilarating non-stop action and an all-around amazing storyline. I’m absolutely LOVING this series. One more book yet to read, Collateral Damage, book #5 in the Bagram Special Ops series that I will be reading VERY soon!
I am so glad that Ms Cross decided to write this story as I really felt it needed to be told and I needed to read it!....In usual KC style it flowed really well and told an exciting story and kept me engaged from start to finish.
After the twists of the last book I was very curious to get Wade's story; after all, how does a man deal with the terrible things he's done while undercover for his government? I really liked Wade's character, who is surprisingly gentle and sweet, especially when it comes to Erin. I expected Wade to be dealing with more conflict over his experience but it's mostly brushed aside in the second half of the book; however, this is also when the action really ramps up so I think it was more a case of Wade having other things on his mind.
I also really enjoyed Erin who is compassionate and caring and seems to really understand Wade and his need to take his reintegration back into life slowly. The chemistry is hot but also very sweet between these two and I liked the quieter progression of their relationship (if that makes sense). The action was fantastic as always and the last quarter of the book had me on pins and needles as I tried to read as fast as I could.
Content Warning: Wade was undercover as a terrorist in the Middle East and is dealing with guilt and PTSD from the experience
First I would say that this was a great book, with a similar style to Cindy Gerard's & Maya Banks' series. This one had more of a stand alone type feel, with less feeling & connection to the other characters in the previous books, despite their brief presence in this story in comparison to the other authors.
Wade runs into the hospital to talk to a man he rescued, to be stopped by Erin, a nurse protecting her patient. Later he is leaving the country because his cover was blown & ends up in the same caravan as Erin. When they are stopped at a check point & not allowed through, all hell breaks loose & they are on the run. Later they end up having to stay in a safe house together because Rahim is now after both of them.
This was a fast paced action novel with the description great enough to feel the emotions running through, but not be so overwhelming to distract. Especially when Wade was embarrassed being around a woman & having lived the customs in Afghanistan for 4 years undercover. It was perfect.
I am definitely adding this author to my must read list!!
Didn't love this one quite as much partly because a lot of it took place State-side and also it was a heavy case of "insta-love". In the other books in the series the Hero and Heroine at least knew each other through the same circle of friends before getting together but things moved very quickly for Wade and Erin.
Kaylea Cross knocks it out of the park again. I seriously want to take up permanent residence in her brain-- I love all the more recent stuff she's written (still working my way through her earlier work. Didn't love the original version of book #1, but it wasn't bad). The Bagram Special Ops series is equal parts RS and military fiction and all-around legend. I've loved every hero/heroine pairing and every character so far-- even the villains. There is a strong underlying thread that connects all the books plotwise, so it's definitely a series best read in order, but the pacing is intense (without being over-the-top unrealistic), the writing crisp and engaging, and the romance equal parts HOT and touching. I really liked Erin as a character, and Wade... be still my heart! Having been undercover in an extremist terrorist group for years to bring it down from the inside, the things he's had to do and the struggles he faces in readjusting to life Stateside whilst knowing he's put an innocent woman (whom he can't stop thinking about) in danger make him such a layered and well-developed character. Kaylea excels at writing the wounded-hero-with-a-heart-of-gold protagonist, and she's in top form with Wade. I wish he were real so I could snatch him from Erin :).
If you haven't read this series yet (or Kaylea's equally excellent Titanium series, drop everything and go do it. It's like military RS book crack, and I can't wait to finally learn Honor & Liam's story in the next book!
Although this book had action I focused on the romance as I do in all other books. Erin is a firecracker, "she raised an eyebrow in mock insult. "What's that supposed to mean? I'm a soldier, aren't I? What, did you think I'd curl into a ball and start crying when they started firing at us?" Wade it is so obvious that boy is attracted to Erin, "he tore his gaze away from her a** and shook himself as she straightened, feeling guilty. She'd done something special and thoughtful for him and all he could think about was effing her." I just loved the relationship Erin and Wade had, "trust me, the fire doesn't need stoking." He caught her hand and pressed it to the rigid length of his erection jutting against the front of his jeans." I actually really do like this author's writing I'll have to look into her other books.
Kaylea Cross, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. *Starts counting on fingers….*
Oh anyhoo, adding up all of the reasons why I love Kaylea Cross would take quite awhile. I stumbled upon Ms. Cross 2 years ago and I have read everything she has written…some of it…well…. a lot of it, I’ve read SEVERAL times. She gets the mix of romance, suspense, kick ass, irresistible military men just right. Whenever she announces a new book, I am always ECSTATIC. You know why? Because I know it will be a kick ass book.
Copy for review provided by the author in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Danger Close was not my favourite in this series. Though it was still a decent read.
I liked the action and I like Wade but I did not really like Erin. She was a bit too sappy and character- less for me. And I really didn't FEEL the connection between the two except for the fact that she really wanted to get it on with him because he was hot and a decent guy. I wanted more from her and I think the insta lust worked against her. I have to say I enjoy a book more when there is some sort of angst between the two main characters... when there's a bit of a build up to the hotness.
Anyway, off to read book 5 and I think the last in the series which has been well worth my time!
Erin is working as an army nurse in Afghanistan when she, on her way home for two weeks off, gets drawn into an attack on her co-passenger. Wade´s spent the last years deep undercover, as second in command to Rahim, one of the US most wanted terrorist. He blew his cover when lives were at stake, but now Rahim is gunning for him. Military action, suspense and smutty fluff in a realistic setting, you´ll feel the dust in your throat, promise. Great read and a series I need to read from start asap.
I am such a huge fan of this author and this series. These books are freaking awesome, and I always love how the female lead is such a strong, kick ass character.... The men of course are always totally swoon worthy too....love it...
Wow! Another very hot alpha Dam this lady knows how to write about hot men!
Seriously though another brilliant read, always makes me have more love and respect for the armed forces at the same time getting me totally hooked in a brilliant book!
So, this one wasn't filled with quite as much adrenaline pumping action as the books that came before it but it was still fast paced and had you on the edge of your seat.
The book began in Bagram, which I really love, one of the main things I have loved about this series is the fact that the stories all unravel in a war zone. However, it quickly returned stateside and remained there for the whole book. Which meant that while suspenseful that underlying feeling of danger you felt in all the other books wasn't really present.
One of the other things I felt (and I may be alone in this but....) this book didn't quite follow the same formula as the other 3 books. I said in previous reviews that the things I loved most about the series was the fact the sex/relationship wasn't the only focal part of the story and wasn't used as 'filler' however I felt in this one that this kind of did happen. I realised at one point I was 62% of the way through the book and craving some action .... not really a good thing.
Please do not get me wrong, I loved Erin and Wade and I really enjoyed their story, especially when things intensified and the action did happen but it just wasn't as prolonged or heart pumping as the other books had been, it was actually a tad bit anticlimactic.
I loved these characters I just wanted MORE and was slightly crestfallen. I almost feel like Cross is scaling it all back in preparation for either a REALLY big bang in the final book or slowly tapering it down to let us down gently when it all ends.
Either way, I am sticking with it because too much of my heart is invested in this series and I am dying for Honor and Liam's HEA.
Bagram Special Ops is still topping my favourite military romance series!
CIA operative Wade Sandberg has spent the last 3 years undercover with a terror cell, but now that his cover is blown, he is being reassigned stateside. When his convoy is attacked after leaving Bagram, Wade and Army Nurse Erin Kelly are forced to defend themselves against insurgents bent on revenge. Erin is eager to return home for some much-needed R&R, but now she and the sexy CIA agent are stuck in a safe house waiting for one of America's most wanted men to make his move.
Series note: This installment begins where the previous book left off, and as such, cannot be read as a standalone.
Unfortunately, this is the weakest book in the series thus far mainly due to the slow pacing and the lack of chemistry between the leads.
The book begins with a bang (quite literally) as Wade and Erin fend off their attackers. However, this auspicious beginning is followed by several chapters focusing on them playing house. This section (almost 2/3s of the book) is tedious and annoying. The action thankfully ratchets up toward the end and the climax and resolution are exciting, if somewhat contrived.
While Wade and Erin are likable as individuals, they do not work as a couple. Their relationship is based solely on the intensity of the situation, and despite the claims of an emotional connection, it feels forced and unrealistic. It calls to mind a quote from the movie "Speed" - "relationships based on intense experiences never work".
Rahim, the villain in this installment, is a much more interesting character and the flashbacks detailing his past go a long way toward explaining, but not mitigating, his actions and motivations.
The final book in the series focuses on Liam and Honor. Even though these two have been mentioned in passing in the previous books, there has been little to no detail on them. Thus, my expectations are lower, which might not be a bad thing.
4 Solid Stars! Kaylea Cross writes her mystery suspense/romance books with the best military themes! I really enjoyed this book in the series, because as most of Kaylea's heroines- are not whimpy and whiny, but Erin Kelly was tough on her own right. She is a military nurse stationed overseas healing troops in the military war zone. She is badass to me!
During her time of deployment she is anxious to go home on leave and ends up saddled with the same mysterious man who barged into the hospital a day before. She finds out that this mysterious stranger is Wade Sandberg and nothing is ever simple around him. I really liked Wade's character, he was intense, quiet, and intriguing. After being chased through villages and mountain regions they find themselves in a safe house in Virginia trying to piece together who is leaking information about their whereabouts to a known terrorist. This terrorist is out for blood after Wade infiltrated his organization for the last 3 years and was his right hand man.
This book is action packed, full of steam factor, and a good thriller to boot. I don't want to give to much away but must say I admired some of the intense themes and how real life they were and yet scary about our current state of world affairs. Great solid read and can't wait to read more in the series!
*This honest review was done in exchange for an Arc through Netgalley from Kaylea Cross and LitConnect- Thank you!*
Another great story! It's official Kaylea Cross can write amazing stories and when I think I read a great book the next one is as great and complex as the first.
Erin was a nurse in the military who was at the wrong place and wrong time (with Wade in the same car) on her way to a well deserved vacation away from the military base. After 3 years undercover Wade had to save the Secretary of Defense and 2 American soldiers. With his cover exposed he had Rahim and his man looking for him for revenge. Erin and Wade had to live together in a CIA safe house and hide.
I loved Wade. In the previous book I was wondering how would Wade go back to the American culture and food. Kaylea Cross did an amazing job portraying Wade's shock back to America. Living as an expat in Dubai can can relate to Wade and congratulate KC for her writing and character development. I loved the fact that Erin did an amazing job cooking and researching about the afghan-Pakistani food and way of life.
Great action and sweet love story. The book had me turning pages and glued to my sofa until I finished it. I loved the uniqueness of every story and characters and the way the plot is built. If not for the few love scenes I would have never thought this book is a romantic suspense. Now I just want to read more and I am looking forward to the last story in the series.
I'm glad that we got more with Wade with this book as I was intrigued with his role in the last book. I can't imagine doing a job like his and being so out of touch with people for that long.
I really liked the instant connection that Wade had with Erin, loved it even more that when things could have moved along he was the one to stop things and think them through. I was a bit surprised to learn the history of the bad guy, but was glad that Wade was able to defeat him in the end.
I liked that Erin was "saved" by Wade and that she could do her own saving that same day. The ending was perfect for these 2, a brand new life to start.
Kayla you have done it again. I love all of your stuff but this one to me is so unique and special. The suspense was great. The way Erin was so strong and not only with everything going on but she really told him her "needs". It made me laugh. I absolutely loved the ending. It brought tears to my eyes with the airport scene. I can hardly wait for the next book. Keep the love coming.
Another great book. I'm not 100% sold on these two falling in love in a week. Maybe because it has been 4 years since Wade has around a woman socially much less intimately. But it could happen.
I feel like my reviews for these books are about the same. But what can I say? I love this genre. The suspense in this book wasn't quite as suspenseful as it was in the previous book but there were still parts that had me on my toes. Funny how that happens when you know that all these books will have a happy ending.
So Wade, after being forced to break his cover in order to save the Secretary of Defense (in the previous book) is now forced go to back to the States. Before he can even leave Afghanistan, he is ambushed. Lt Erin Kelly happens to be in the vehicle with him as she is headed home for a vacation. The ambush forces them to race into the mountains to evade their attackers, who were sent by Rahim, the terrorist leader who was the reason Wade was undercover.
Erin and Wade get back to the States but are forced to stay in a safe house as the threat against him is not over. Erin is dragged in because she was seen with him- unwittingly becoming a target herself. While staying in the safe house, Erin and Wade fight their attraction to one another before they can no longer help themselves and give in.
While Erin and Wade are falling for each other, Wade discovers he's been set up by someone on the inside and will stop at nothing to find out who it is. He's also determined to bring down Rahim, who's arrived in the States to set up an attack on American soil
Like I said, the suspense in this was a little lacking when compared with the previous book in this series. Having said that though, there were still quite a few tense moments. I enjoy books that can take me to the edge of my seat and don't force me to think about how that could never happen in real life. And the romance was as hot as usual. Can't wait to read the final installment in this series!
Another powerful book that brings home the facts of war and terrorism. If you've been reading these books you'll remember Erin from all the hospital visits the others have made. She's an Army nurse, and she can fight as well as heal, with the healing being more of a priority for her. In this book she's ready to head home for some R&R looking forward to seeing family and riding horses.
Wade was instrumental in the rescue of the Secretary of Defense, Maya and Jackson from the vicious hands of the terrorist Rahim. Unfortunately Rahim isn't taking this betrayal lightly and has plans for Wade and everyone he's been in contact with.
After a run in with Erin when he goes to see Jackson, Wade prepares for his trip stateside. He's not sure how he feels when he arrives at the transport to find Erin already there. Apparently they would be traveling stateside together. At least that was how it initially appears.
Then things go FUBAR at the last checkpoint on their way to the airport.
When they finally make it back to Bagram, Erin learns the severity of the situation she finds herself in and who Wade actually works for.
In spite of everything Erin finds herself falling for Wade, and then there's the close confines of the safe house they eventually get to. Nothing is going to fall into place easily, not Rahim, not the traitors among them, not even the beginning relationship.
There's a lot of action, hold your breath scenes, some laughter, lots of tears and a romance that survives it all.
I can't wait to read the next book in this series!
Oooooo yeah. Who sends a "top-of-the-line" sniper to go kill someone and also sends them with an RPG and they still miss their mark?? 🤣 Also seriously minus 3 stars for zero helicopters in this book.
This is probably one of the weakest books out of the Bagram Special Ops series. Also, hello? Bagram? 90% of the story is in CIA safehouse in Virginia. Boooooooring. I should have known I wasn't going to like this book, there's no helicopters in it. Not even on the cover.
Anyway I got through 61% of this book and lost interest. It's so different from the first 3. None of the previous characters appear. It's just Wade and Erin. I also found it interesting that Erin is one of the least developed characters in this book series. Her and Honor. I liked when she went into her nurse mode but she definitely lacked the attitude and grit of the other FMCs. Especially if you read Maya's story which was CRAZY. Erin isn't very interesting imo. She nice annnnnnnnd that's it.
I liked Wade and his struggle to reinsert himself into Western society but I thought he was more badass in Lethal Pursuit.
Because Kaylea Cross links the stories in the books I had to drag myself through this just so I wouldn't miss anything but omg this book really shouldn't be a part of this series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Again...another 10 star book. This was bloody fantastic!!! Love, love, loved it! Who would’ve thought that someone so deeply undercover would’ve found his way back and actually found himself again. Wow and what can I say about Erin except, she’s flipping awesome! The pairing of Wade and Erin was exceptionally brilliant! She brought him back to life and he healed her heart. Just lovely. The action in this book from beginning to end was phenomenal! Exceptional read.
Ugh hate hate hate the bad guy. He’s one of the utter worst, I loved the rest of the story, totally sympathized with Erin, burnout is the nursing professions biggest danger, day in day out you give so much more than just time and knowledge, you can’t do your job well if you don’t give a little of your heart too, but the price is hard.
The title of the book is attracting and the front cover of the book is catchy and justified according to the story. The plot of the story is hooking and captivating narrating style never lacked the grip of the story till the end anywhere. A perfectly compact and satisfying read for me. Would love to recommend this one for sure.
