Érase una vez… un jardinero del cementerio que se enamoró de un doliente profesional que se parecía a Pierrot la Lune, ¿o sería un fantasma?

Érase una vez… una estudiante de arte que le pide a un joven que pose para ella, desnudo una Nochevieja.

Érase una vez… agentes del futuro enviados a nuestro presente, en un pequeño pueblo costero, para reparar una paradoja temporal. Se encuentran disfrutando degustando helados italianos frente a los atardeceres y no quieren volver nunca más a su

In a Nutshell: What an adorable graphic novel! Three quirky stories within one book. Each has ‘happy endings’, and even better is the entertaining journey to these endings. Loved this! Much recommended!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This graphic novel was originally published in French under the same title in August 2024. This is the English translation, coming out in April 2025. The cover of the English edition appears to have a different vibe from that of the French edition.
 English Edition  -------  French Edition
I read on the author’s Instagram page that the second cover under the dust jacket will be the same as what we see on the French edition. However, I like the English cover better. There is something absurdly hilarious about seeing two such stiff-looking agents in formal wear standing against such a pastel pink background, and holding a cat to boot! 😹
The book contains three short stories, each showing two characters who reach a happy ending. Now some of you might dismiss this immediately, saying, ‘Ah, I don’t read romance stories.’ So to you I say: None of these tales are romance stories in the true sense of the word, though they do contain minor elements of love stories. The three stories are independent of each other, though we get an epilogue (which is the icing on the already delicious cake) showing the main duo from each tale.
Each story is whimsically charming, not the type you would expect to be cutesy or funny. I love how each tale has something unusual in its plot, even though this genre isn’t really known for twists or surprises. The title is completely justified; every story has an adorable ending, and not necessarily in the way you think.
The art style and colour palette differs for each story, offering them not just an individuality in appearance but also a distinct setting and mood. The colour scheme is mostly monochromatic, so at no point do the colours overwhelm the plot. The whole packaging works excellently.
Here’s a quick glimpse at the individual ‘happy endings’:
🎨 Story One: ‘Happy New Year’ – 4 stars.
An art student asks a handsome guy to pose for her on New Year’s Eve. While he accepts her request, he is suspicious of her intentions. Why would any artist want a model on New Year’s Eve, right? She has to have ulterior motives!
While this was my least favourite of the three stories, it still entertained me. I loved the goofy guy, and how his nose kept dribbling as he posed. It was so comical! (And a little gross, too!)
🌊 Story Two: ‘Ocean’ – 5 stars.
Two agents from the future are sent into our world to capture a criminal who has created a temporal paradox. They find their target easily, but as their time travel device faces a charging issue, they cannot return home immediately. What now?
This was the longest story of the book, and the most amusing. This should also have been the silliest, considering the identity of the “villain” and the cartoonish agents, but it ends up more cute. I also loved it for not taking the typical love story route. A shoutout to the futuristic character names: Toots and Boots! 😸
👻 Story Three: ‘One Summer Day Song’ – 4.5 stars.
A cemetery gardener secretly falls in love with a professional grave mourner. However, he has his suspicions about the actual identity of the mourner. After all, how can this fellow cry buckets of tears, the way “people cry in mangas”? I won't say more! 😆
This story keeps shuffling between endearing and entertaining. From the story title, you might assume that this is the most romantic of the three. It is. But it is also the funniest and even involves a surprise reveal. The ending is the best!
As you can see, I am delighted with this trio of stories. I knew that this book would be a light read, but I didn’t expect to laugh so much. Every story ensured that I had a huge grin on my face when I reached ‘le fin.’ I would absolutely love to read more books by this author.
Much recommended to graphic novel enthusiasts looking for a whimsical and rewarding story collection.
4.5 stars, based on the average of my ratings for each story. Offering my own ‘happy ending’ to the book by rounding it up!
My thanks to Publisher Spotlight and Fairsquare Graphics for providing the DRC of “Happy Endings” via NetGalley. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
Ce n'est pas une surprise de dire que j'ai une fois de plus eu un coup de coeur monumental pour la nouvelle BD de Lucie Bryon.
Trois histoires qui donnent envie de tomber amoureux et d'avoir des papillons dans le ventre. Toutes superbement illustrées, avec le trait si caractéristique de Lucie Bryon qui donne tant de caractère à ses personnages.
Comme d'hab, j'ai pris certaines illustrations en photo avec mon téléphone durant ma lecture tant elles me faisaient rire.
Bravo, encore une BD exceptionnelle à ne rater sous aucun prétexte.
Les histoires de Lucie Bryon devraient être remboursées par la Sécu.
(Ça veut dire que c'était trop cool.)
(Et que ça fait vachement de bien, les fins heureuses.)
Une petite BD qui se lit comme on déguste un bon petit lait chaud en fin de journée : sous les rayons du soleil avec une chaleur qui se diffuse dans tout votre corps.
Mignon, pétillant, un peu fantastique, LGBT, on ne peut qu'aimer !!
C'ETAIT TROP BIEN !
J'ai adoré ! La première histoire est trop mignonne.
La deuxième, j'ai bcp aimé le concept du voyage dans le temps ⌛️. En plus les relations entre les personnages sont trop mignonnes.
MAIS ALORS LA 3EME.... C'ETAIT PARFAIT ! L'histoire d'un jardinier de cimetière et d'un pleureur de tombe. J'ai trouvé ça terriblement mignon.
Et en plus j'ai pu avoir une dédicace de Lucie Bryon 💝 la vie est belle.
Super mimz et doux, je ne saurais dire qu'elle est ma pref entre Ocean et Chanson d'un jour d'été (cette dernière est hyper super mimz, j'adore). J'aime toujours autant le trait et le découpage de Lucie Bryon, ça bouge pas.
Lisez la pour vous faire du bien
Que c'est beau, que les dessins et les couleurs sont incroyables.
Mais ce qui me fait le plus de bien, c'est les fins heureuses, les papillons dans le ventre, l'émerveillement de voir des amours naissants entre des personnes adorables. Ca fait du bien de lire ça, surtout en ce moment.
Jusqu'à la troisième histoire, je n'étais pas forcément conquis au-delà du trait si onctueux, doux et expressif (l'équivalent en dessin d'un gâteau de Savoie, si ça fait un quelconque sens) et du *spicy smol cat* adorable en Christ.
Mais la troisième histoire mes aïeux...je veux dire...les personnages...le cimetière...la dynamique romantique...les grosses larmes épaisses...la bisexual panic du protagoniste tout rougissant tout brousailleux...c'est pour me tuer, moi et mon cœur de shojo-boy.
C'était super !! J'ai adoré retrouver le style de Lucie Bryon dont j'avais déjà adoré "Voleuse". Au début j'étais frustrée que les histoires soient si courtes, mais avec du recul j'aime avoir seulement une tranche de vie de ces personnages si doux et attachants. Aussi, je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais je suis obsédée par les cils des personnages, ils ont quelque chose de poétique et gracieux qui les rend captivants. 😊😊
So this is actually three stories in one. The first is very short and sweet about an artist falling for her muse. The second is a much longer about time traveling agents who get stuck and the third was my favorite about a cemetery gardener falling for a grave mourner.
The whole thing is queer and they all obviously have happy endings. I'm a little confused about the actual collection of stories and what brought them together. Whether or not it's just three different stories this author has written and they decided to publish them all together or if they've been published previously separately. I'm having a little bit of trouble figuring it out because of the language difference and since these are translated from French. Either way, I did enjoy it. The last story was by far my favorite. The second one was good but I did have trouble following it, and the first was also good but it was so short.
1st: 4 stars
2nd: 4 stars
3rd: 5 stars
Happy endings m'ha agradat i proposa parelles de personatges inesperades, amb el to humorístic i una mica estripat que ja coneixia de Bryon. Les històries m'han funcionat de manera desigual, tot i que les tres estan prou bé. Potser les he trobat un pèl massa senzilles.
Globalment, crec que em vaig parar una trampa a mi mateixa amb les expectatives: Ladrona em va agradar molt i tenia el llistó molt alt.
I got an advanced copy of “Thieves” by Lucie Bryon a few years ago and I loved it, so I knew that I was going to love this one too.
“Happy Endings” is a collection of three short stories following… some happy endings, of course! The art and colors are gorgeous (as always), and the quirky little story lines filled my heart with so much joy. You will also ALWAYS be able to get to me with a Pierrot type character. So lovely. So whimsical.
j'avais trop aimé "Voleuse" donc je me suis jetée sur Happy Endings, et je regrette pas !!
une bd toute en légèreté qui raconte trois jolies histoires d'amour. j'adore le dessin de Lucie Bryon, tout en suggestion, et la colorisation en trame rend vraiment super je trouve.
on a envie que les histoires soient plus longues, et donc qu'il y ai aussi plus d'enjeux, mais je crois que ce n'est juste pas le projet du livre et il est aussi super chouette comme ça
bref une bd confort à lire et relire
4.5 I loved each story, the humour, the art style, the relationships.. But I don't understand why this is one book with three stories in them? Two of them at least deserved a book dedicated to them...
