I liked the book for its flow and anecdotes. As a non-bengali, my knowledge of the Tagore family is restricted to Rabindranath Tagore or Abanindranath Tagore. It's really refreshing to read about the other members of the illustrious family, especially its women. The writing style is quite conversational, which I found distracting at times but it does make for a quick read.

Reading Thakurbadi for the first time reminded me of The First Muslim: The Story of Muhammad by Lesley Hazleton, particularly in the way both books combine deep historical research with the craft of storytelling. History can be an inherently fascinating subject, but keeping it engaging depends largely on how it is told.
As you begin reading Thakurbadi, layer after layer of stories unfolds, many of which connect directly to aspects of our everyday lives, yet we rarely stop to think about where these ideas or practices originated. The name Rabindranath Tagore looms so large that, unintentionally, many important people, events, and truths connected to the larger Tagore family have faded into its shadow. Thakurbadi attempts to bring those forgotten figures and stories back into the light, reminding readers that “Tagore” does not simply mean Rabindranath.
It was a remarkable family in which nearly every generation produced extraordinary individuals who, in their time, counted among some of the most significant and influential people not only in India but across the world. Animesh Mukharjee has consistently written on non-fiction subjects, and his ability to present rigorous research through compelling storytelling is something rarely seen among Hindi writers today.
