This was a bit uneven. It starts out great, with a plot twist that feels fresh to me. While Elizabeth is in Kent the Bingleys have had contact with Jane. Miss Bingley says Mr. Darcy made promises to her and is hoping that their engagement would be finalized soon. But Darcy is trying to evade such a fate. Miss Bingley's hopes are crushed. Somebody gets shot in the park. Is he dead, or did he survive? There is a bit of conflicting information and it might go either way.

So far so good, I was very intrigued. But when the story turns upon a huge plot device involving an exceptional animal, some suspension of disbelief is required.

Our dear couple admits their mutual love and get engaged before the halfway mark. Then they still have some mysteries to solve and some threats to cope with. I saw many of the twists coming but it was an interesting ride to get there. Some historical context gets dropped in the dialogue in a way that comes across as info dumps.

Steam level: We know when but not what.

TL;DR The true hero of this story has four legs and neighs.

This variation is full of twists and turns. It includes a breach between Darcy and the Bingleys, the shooting of a major character, a kidnapping, the newlywed Darcys in hiding, English spies, the war with France, the difficulties of industrialization in northern England, a murder, and plenty of romance between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet... all wrapped into a whodunnit mystery. Oh, and there's a super-smart, super-loyal horse who has the tracking ability of a bloodhound!

Things start off in Kent. Colonel Fitzwilliam does NOT mention to Elizabeth that Darcy had saved his good friend Bingley from an imprudent marriage, so she has no reason to avoid tea at Rosings later that day. Since Colonel Fitzwilliam and Darcy leave the next morning, Darcy never has an opportunity to propose. Also, Charlotte has learned some unpleasant truths about Mr. Wickham from Miss de Bourgh, which she shares with Elizabeth.

In Cheapside, the Bingley sisters have made an abrupt turnaround and renewed their friendship with Jane Bennet after snubbing her when she first arrived. By the time Elizabeth gets there, Mr. Bingley has begun to call, and Jane is glowing with joy. In addition, Elizabeth learns that the Bingleys have had a major dispute with Mr. Darcy, who has subsequently cut off contact with them.

Colonel Fitzwilliam unexpectedly calls on the Gardiners and arranges for Elizabeth to meet Miss Darcy. He has observed that Miss Bennet dislikes Darcy, which comes as a surprise to his cousin, who has been fighting his attraction to the lady since Meryton.

The above describes only the main plot points in the opening chapters, and the story REALLY takes off from there. It's a romance/adventure/mystery/spy novel that, thankfully, provides the protagonists and readers with the same clues - including some that only lead to dead ends.

Ms. Eriksen is Norwegian, but her command of English is truly impressive, and she has a wonderfully inventive imagination. Although there's unusual phrasing at times, it doesn't detract from the overall quality of her writing. Her research is apparent in the historical details woven into the story.

I did note some scenes where it was hard to determine who was speaking.

There's one glaring plot hole n the middle of the book, but that's a spoiler.

Despite its flaws, the book is an entertaining read, and the mystery is a good one!

Content is MA with marital foreplay.

Fools talk, cowards are silent, wise men listen. — Carlos Ruiz Zafon

As the story begins, Jane is approached by the superior Bingley sisters with an offer of renewed friendship. At Hunsford, Elizabeth makes plans to return to London early.

Colonel Fitzwilliam sets the stage with a single sentence: “Their brother was a great friend of Darcy’s.” Not “is a friend” but “was a friend.”

He explains further: “The nature of the unpleasant event renders it a circumstance Darcy would not like to become known … Whether Mr Bingley respects his wishes remains to be seen. It will reveal his character for the better, or, I dare say, for the worse. Good men are scarce, but there are fools aplenty … He (Darcy) merely related that he is trying to save himself from a most imprudent marriage.”

When Elizabeth is again in company with Jane and the Bingleys, she learns that Darcy was betrothed to Caroline Bingley and has jilted her.

Elizabeth is skeptical but what is the truth?

A fool and his money are soon parted. — Proverbs

How did the betrothal happen?
Why does Bingley support Caroline’s beliefs?
And does the Bingley fortune still exist?

Colonel Fitzwilliam encourages friendship with the Darcy siblings. Romance blooms.

Then, a murder occurs in broad daylight, before multiple witnesses.

Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. — Euripides

I loved this look at an underhanded Bingley and a Jane, who ultimately, is a strong woman.

An event did not make much sense to me (Elizabeth allows visitors to her home that she knows her husband would not accept). I was also disappointed not to learn firsthand of the resolution to an episode of Darcy in danger.

But these are small nitpicks in an otherwise well-told thriller.

Loved it!

Fitzwilliam Darcy is being pressured to marry Caroline Bingley. This leads to a falling out with the Bingley family.

Darcy seeks some distance and retreats to Rosings Park, with his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam

Jane Bennet is suddenly being sought out by the Bingley family, only weeks after an appalling snub.
Mr Bennet is suspicious and fears that sweet Jane is being gulled.

Elizabeth Bennet's stay in Hunsford ends early, when she is summoned to London to help her sister Jane.

Once all the players are in London, a rollercoaster of events ensue.

Elizabeth witnesses an assassination and tries to stem the copious bleeding.

Elizabeth and Darcy become closer while he and the Fitzwilliam family try to identify who is behind the attack.

As love grows, so does danger. A kidnapping occurs and Elizabeth is involved in a madcap chase to follow.

Unfortunately, she is less than successful.
However, an exceptional horse comes to the rescue!

Compelling story of love, betrayal, vengeance and a little social justice.
I couldn't put this one down until I finished it.

Mystery(s) make for a ever changing story

This variation pays more attention the Napoleonic War was raging during the Pride and Prejudice timeline. Quite the entertaining romp and fun from beginning to end. Lots of changes for many of the well known characters. Pride and Prejudice meets James Bond.

Different and romantic!

Plenty of mystery, romance and plot twists throughout this story, as Darcy and Elizabeth follow a very different path to happiness. While Darcy initially is his usual arrogant self, he learns early on to behave better. He and the Colonel have many secrets and are in danger, while Lizzy assists them through many exciting plot twists. Many characters are not all that they appear to be.

When good men go bad.

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: mature due to certain descriptions of injuries, death, murder, betrayal, and sensual scenes with ODC.
>>Angst Level: stressful but bearable as ODC struggles with family. There will be many… many shocking reveals.
>>Source: I borrowed this from KU [11-21-24] and volunteered to leave a review. I first read this as a WIP and loved it. I was happy to see it published.
>>Tissue alert: I shed a tear or two. It was so touching at times. Sniff.
>>Trope: [1] NSN Bingley [2] NSN Jane, WHAT? [3] Delusional Caroline, nothing new

I had a hard time with Elizabeth’s attitude at times. She was as stubborn as a pack of mules. Seriously! She was sharp as a tack the rest of the time. She gave good advice when needed and was there for her loved ones. This was a new side to Bingley that shocked me. I could not believe his behavior. Poor Darcy was the brunt of his friend’s betrayal. This was the not-so-nice [NSN] Bingley trope and was a doozy. There were many shocking reveals and a time or two that I teared up.

Spies aplenty

This story captivated me; reading from Elizabeth's perspective reveals the mystery gradually, layer by layer. Despite receiving new information, Elizabeth's canonical obstinacy occasionally caused her dislike of Darcy and her fondness for Wickham and Bingley to fluctuate. I love the time between ODC. Some of the storytelling was a little uneven, but overall, very enjoyable.

The audiobook narrated by Elizabeth Grace is wonderful.

This is just another fabulous story among all the fabulous stories Ms. Eriksen writes that transports the reader into the world of Austen. However, this one has a bit of a "dark side" to a character (or more?). Loved the twist near the end! Beautifully done!

Intrigues and romance

Together make an action packed story of love, retribution and loss.

The story offers so much, but what stands out is the great chemistry between our dear couple.

The big switch up here is who the big bad is.

Amazing read.

During her stay at Hundsford Elizabeth not only encounters the haughty Mr Darcy but also his amiable cousin Colonel Fitzwilliam. The Colonel relates to her that Darcy is confronted with an imprudent match and that Bingley is not acting as one would expect from a friend. Elizabeth is confused but decides to judge for herself because her aunt requestes her presence in London to discern if Bingley, who finally returned Jane's call, does not make a fool of her sister.
When Elizabeth arrives in London Jane is already engaged, thus Elizabeth finds herself again in the company of the disagreeable Mr Darcy. When some days later the Colonel unexpectedly calls, she even finds herself in the company of Mr Darcy's shy but lovely sister. An unexpected assassination and later even an abduction gives her a chance to get to know Darcy better. But will this be enough for more than a friendship with his sister? Why is Darcy constantly in trouble? And will he need Elizabeth to overcome them?

The book was very well written by the author Elin Eriksen. It’s a fast-paced mystery with many twists and turns and I was hardly able to put it down. Because of the twists and turns one was not able to fully guess the extent of the secrets and the actual occurrences until the very end. I, for my part, had my suspicions but did not guess everything in advance. In addition the book was very thrilling because Darcy is due to a secret and its impacts in immediate danger. Therefore you long to know what happens next, especially with Darcy, and you are quite hooked. That was all very well done.

I really love the development of the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth in this variation and that there is an early understanding between them. Once they have overcome their misunderstandings they share such a loving relationship and even partnership. They constantly search for a way to be near each other, to hold hands, to kiss, to comfort each other. I like that Elizabeht comes to know Darcy in times of distress and vulnerability and therefore sees the real, undisguised man. I like that she, in the course of their relationship, is able to guess his every mood and that she is there to support him and give him comfort. Darcy, for his part, soon discovers that he needs Elizabeth to overcome his troubles, not only because of her support but also because of her clever understanding and her help.

Most of the time the story takes place in London and therefore it's mostly only ODC and Darcy's family. There are short scenes with the Longbourn party but they have little chance to come between Darcy and Elizabeth or to become an obstacle for their union.

There is one big villain in the book but that is part of the Secret and its impacts and therefore I will not reveal more. You need to find out for yourself.

If you like to know what secret of the past endangers Darcy at present and how he, with Elizabeth's help, can deal with it you should definitely read this excellent book.

I highly recommend it.

I received a free copy of the book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Addition for the audiobook:
The audiobook was narrated by the excellent narrator Elizabeth Grace. I like her very much. She has her own way to give every character their own voice and therefore you are, at any point of the story, able to recognise who is speaking to whom. I like that very much.
With Elizabeth Grace's narration of the audiobook the story is even better than only in writing.
As I read the book before I also enjoyed the many hints about the big secret that are part of the story but you only understand them in retrospect or while reading a second time. But they are always there. That was very well done by the author.

Melodramatic, somewhat confusing

The story begins during Elizabeth's visit to Charlotte Collins at Hunsford Parsonage, where she meets Colonel Fitzwilliam and Darcy. She's just had a letter from Jane with the surprising news that Caroline and Charles Bingley have suddenly reappeared at the Gardiner's home to resume their friendship and Bingley's courtship of Jane. Caroline is also proclaiming loudly that Darcy is honor bound to marry her. Darcy and the Colonel cut short their visit to Lady Catherine, and rush to London to confront the scheming Bingleys. Elizabeth also cuts short her visit when both her father and Aunt Gardiner urge her to be with Jane, as they both find it very suspicious that the Bingleys are suddenly being so overly friendly.

This is a highly dramatic tale with lots of political intrigue, sinister plots, danger, and very bad villains. Darcy and Elizabeth get deeply involved while learning a lot about each other, and the romance is lovely. I was wondering at times, particularly in the first half of the book, whether English is the first language of the author, as there were a large number of paragraphs and dialogues that didn't make a lot of sense. Some of the writing was awkward, as if the author knew what she wanted to convey but just couldn't explain it completely. There were also situations that were quite ludicrous. For example, in one scene, Jane and Elizabeth are at the Hurst House in London, and Caroline gives a scathing rant at Elizabeth, insulting her and making wild accusations. Then in the next scene, Caroline is welcomed to the Gardiner's residence to call on Jane and Elizabeth, as if nothing happened. Wait, what!!!??

I was disappointed that our beloved Elizabeth did several very stupid things in the book, extremely thoughtless and stupid things. In spite of this, I recommend the book for an exciting, melodramatic, dark, and kinda sinister tale.

This should have been a novella

And it certainly should have mentioned that it was at least 40% history lessons...and I enjoy history. I struggled to get through this very boring story with far too much pointless information not to mention the needless side storylines that went ultimately nowhere.

- This story had a solid beginning that held my attention.

- Darcy and Elizabeth reach an understanding earlier than usual.

Least favorite:

- All the Bennets arriving in London. I couldn't take those scenes seriously.

- There were times that I didn't know who was speaking.

* Sidenote:
- Jane creeped me out.

An exciting tale of traitors and murderers.

Elizabeth slowly begins to learn at Hunsford that she has misjudged Darcy. She is conflicted, however, when the Bingleys accuse Darcy of ungentlemanly behavior…of leading them to believe that he would offer for Miss Bingley. Elizabeth had noticed Miss Bingley’s blatant pursuit of Darcy, but also saw that he was unaffected by her forward nature. Bingley also accused Darcy of interfering with his relationship with Jane. For being as angry with Darcy as he appears, Bingley is also anxious to know Darcy’s whereabouts and is relentless in trying to uncover all his movements.

Elizabeth greets Colonel Fitzwilliam in Hyde Park only to witness him being shot. She attempts to aid him but the Colonel begs her to act as if he is already dead. She does believe him to be dead given the severity of the wound and his family’s response to the shooting. Shortly afterwards Darcy is abducted in Elizabeth’s presence. She soon discovers that nothing is as she has believed.

Jane marries Bingley, but there are signs that everything is not as it should be. Jane’s health appears to deteriorate and Bingley is often angry. Jane uncovers some dark secrets, but what will she do?

There are English spies and French spies. There is attempted murder and actual murder. And the identities of these persons will amaze as the story enthralls and begs to not be set aside. An exciting, adventurous tale with some romantic sizzle. Not distasteful but meant for more mature readers.

In this variation the Bingleys are not what they seem to be. Although I will not elaborate on this due to the fact that I would spoil it for others.

We have some drama in that the Colonel is shot and rumored to be dead. Then we have Darcy being kidnapped. Elizabeth soon joins him...not due to anything she does. In this story Darcy's horse, on which she is riding seems to have the abilities of a bloodhound (as another review mentions) and races to join his master. So, Elizabeth soon joins Darcy in captivity. Both Darcy and Elizabeth fear for their lives at this point and their fate seems to rest in the "Master"/leader of the gang of kidnappers. However, he does not show up.

Remember, this is the time during which England is at war with the French and it seems that Darcy's role in that conflict is of interest to some with French connections...maybe?

Jane and Bingley's relationship draws some of our attention as it does not seem as if they are quite as happy as the couple we know from canon.

There is some mystery as to where this story is leading in the beginning for me. Things did coagulate are we read past about the first half. There are lots of details I didn't touch on.

I did enjoy this story. I received an ARC and am leaving a review of my own free will.

Twists and turns I didn’t fully see coming

This variation diverts from canon during Elizabeth’s stay in Kent. Darcy leaves before any disastrous Huntsford proposal could take place. Elizabeth has received a letter from her sister and her aunt that concerns her. Miss Bingley has renewed her friendship with Jane. The question is why?? Darcy has almost cut all his ties to Bingley, again why? Colonel Fitzwilliam brings Georgiana to visit at Elizabeth’s aunt and uncle’s and begin a friendship. On an outing to the park Elizabeth witnesses Col F get shot from a horse. He says a few cryptic comments and Elizabeth fears his death. Darcy is kidnapped and again Elizabeth is a witness but rides on Darcy’s horse, who she has no control over, to see where he is taken. You do have to suspend belief to see this horse is more of a bloodhound as several other reviewers have stated. Secrecy, twist and turns, spies, contract contracts to kidnap & kill, secret weddings and murder all take place in the story. Overall it was an enjoyable who done it story. I will probably read it again.

I also got the audiobook to go with, and that was very well done. I am thankful to this and the other authors who continue to use human narrators.

This is a fabulous P&P variation!

I love when a variation "makes some things right" while simultaneously giving us a new storyline. This story begins at Rosings, with most events the same until that time. There is no proposal, but Elizabeth leaves early to attend to Jane, who has suspiciously resumed courting Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Gardiner sends as SOS, and Elizabeth hies off to London.

It turns out that Mr. Darcy is embroiled in scandal, and Miss Bingley is trying to flush him out by openly promoting an engagement between them where Darcy is acting dishonorably. The tables are turned when Elizabeth marries Darcy and finds out there is more to EVERYTHING than what she previously knew.

The second half of the story begins to unravel a web of secret identities, death threats, and unexpected romance. I was listening to the audiobook (which is spectacularly narrated by Elizabeth Grace) and wasn't in a place to listen so I quickly downloaded this from KU because I couldn't put it down. It was written to captivate and I was hooked! I did finish the audiobook after completing it in KU, and I think I loved it even more with the narration bringing it to life.

I was highly recommend this P&P story!

pleasantly surprised by the ending

Many P&P variations follow the same formula—the same villains, and even, arguably, the same basic plot. This one left me pleasantly surprised by the unmasking, though. I’m not Nancy Drew nor Sherlock Holmes, but I honestly did not see the main villain coming. Take that as you will.

Unfortunately, I was very unimpressed by the opening. Instead of lowering herself to write an exposition of 100 pages or so the author dropped us in the middle of a rather odd time (somewhere after Darcy and Ms. Bingley and Mrs. Hurst convince Bingley to abandon Jane). We get a short summary in the beginning but it, of course, wasn’t good enough to explain everything. It also made me fearful that it was one of the P&P variations where Darcy entertains Ms. Bingley (it wasn’t luckily).

Still, the ending was so good that I forgave the beginning and gave it 4 stars. Anyone who wants to read a more unique P&P variation should check this one out.

This is quite a ride.
Mrs Gardiner finds it very suspicious, that Caroline Bingley suddenly takes an interest in Jane after first shunning her. So Elizabeth is called to London early from Kent. So there is never a marriage proposal. Actually Richard opens Darcy eyes and makes him realize, that Elizabeth dislikes him.
When Elizabeth joins Jane in London, there has been another proposal instead! A lot of things are happening: Caroline with her brother's support tries to force Darcy in to a marriage, there is a shooting in the Park and a kidnapping and Elizabeth starts to develop feelings for Darcy.
So enjoy the thrilling ride :-)

I listened to the audio book, and I really like the narrator Elizabeth Grace.

Good Men Are Scarce by Elin Eriksen is a solid, adventurous regency variation with an intriguing and unique story. I had a hard time putting it down, which has become normal for me while reading this author’s books. My only quibble involves Darcy’s horse, but as it helped move the story along, I really can’t complain. I loved the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth. The resolution of the attacks was really good. I don’t wish to spoil anything with more specifics.

This author has a unique voice with different and interesting storylines. I look forward to reading more from her in the future.

Great story but a few issues…..

The storyline was very good enough clues that the villains were easy to discern. Unfortunately this reader found it rather disjointed and somewhat difficult to follow. There were many instances when a thorough knowledge of P&P is assumed and required to understand relationships and actions. Likewise a number of events important to the plot occurred off stage and given only a brief mention when disclosed to E or D. Those disclosures were sorely lacking details. That said, it is an enjoyable read for JAFF readers.

not too bad.

I like the premise that ODC come to an early agreement. I didn't really like Elizabeth or Jane in this version though. Didn't hate them, but found them quite passive and flat (especially Lizzy riding on Darcy's horse...what was that nonsense?!). Bingley was also bleargh (not a fatal problem, but overall I felt like there weren't enough characters I loved in this variation).

That was a twist. I normally don't like mysteries, but I did this one. The villain was not hard to guess, but some of the details leading up to it were (some a little OTT and others convenient) - but no matter this was a page turner full of drama, intrigue, deceptions, betrayals, fierce loyalty and of course ODC being ODC.

An intriguing Darcy and a bit of a mystery which doesn’t take too much to figure out. I love the time between ODC and the relationship developed naturally without insta-love for ODG. I did wish Elizabeth was more involved in solving the mystery, but overall, I highly recommend! Love bad Bingleys!
