My son and his girlfriend stand there, two terrified teenagers shivering in the doorway, and say the unthinkable. ‘I think we killed someone.’ Now, I have to decide exactly what kind of mother I am…
Everything changes in a heartbeat the night Conor and his girlfriend Paris Levinson come to us begging for help, their clothes spattered with blood. They say it was an accident, that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time…
A mother’s intuition is never wrong, and I know there is more they aren’t telling us. But Paris’ mother Helen and I have to make a choice that will change all of our lives. Do wetell the truth, and risk losing our children forever? Or do we lie to keep them safe?
We will do anything to protect our children, but one wrong move could cost us everything. Lying to the police was a risk, and now Helen is acting more unpredictable by the day – turning up at my house unannounced, harassing my husband, telling lies about my past…
The only way to save my family is to uncover the truth about that night. I’m convinced the answers lie hidden inside the Levinsons’ house. I’d do anything for Conor, but am I prepared for what I might find behind locked doors? But when your son is in danger, you find out what kind of mother you are…
Anyone who loved Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn and The Housemaid will be absolutely blown away by the rollercoaster ride of emotions in this gripping psychological thriller! A totally twisted page-turner guaranteed to keep you up all night turning the pages.

Thanks to my friend Jayne for the recommendation! The audio narration was the best!🤩
This one is a stand-alone, so it worked out for me. It is the eighth in this popular series.
I loved the quote at the beginning.... "If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything." Mark Twain
I loved the character of Christine and my heart broke for her as she tries to do the right thing to protect her only son. Her and husband Ed, are ready to go "all in" , BUT they haven't thought through the consequences. Can everyone keep the lies straight??
This produced plenty of adrenaline, had some very dark twisted paths, and the feeling of unease was always present as I listened to the wonderful narrators. I also enjoyed the character of Detective Dan (I can see why he is popular).
A twisty police procedural that will keep you guessing and maybe have your heart racing a bit, mine sure was!
Released on Jan 8, 2025 I listened to the Audible version which was narrated by James Lailey
“What Kind of Mother” by Anna-Lou Weatherley is a great twisty thriller. This is the first novel I’ve read by her. Although this is in a series, it reads as a standalone.
This is the 8th installment of the Detective Dan Riley series. The story begins shockingly, with two dating teens returning home after a night out. They are covered in blood. The mother, Christine, of the boy, Conor, immediately goes into protection mode.
Of course, Detective Riley gets involved. The story shifts POV between Riley and Christine. Conor’s girlfriend, Paris, is a complicated character adding depth to the story, especially when her parents, specifically her mother, gets involved. Riley has two mothers to deal with, and each provides him reason to feel they are hiding something.
Weatherley leads the reader one way, and then BAM, a twist. Riley is tenacious in finding the truth of what happened that night, and why the parents are not being forthcoming. Weatherley keeps the reader in suspense, with red herrings
This thriller showcases moral dilemmas. It questions what makes a good parent: one who conceals the truth to cover for their child, or one that forces them to face their transgressions.
Because it’s so fast paced and easy to follow, it makes a perfect audio. James Lailey is good. He has the same voice for women as men, so if that is a quibble, you may not enjoy his narration. It’s an 11 hour and 23-minute listen. I recommend this for a road trip listen!
Terrified teens, a murdered man, secrets, lies, and a mother wanting to protect her child set the stage for What Kind of Mother! I found this book to be gripping, fast paced, and intense at times! I had no idea going into this book that it was the eighth book of a series. It worked perfectly as a stand-alone for me.
Christine and her husband Ed are shocked when their son Conor and her employer's daughter, Paris, woke then up with news that they may have killed someone. How far will a mother go to protect her child? When Paris' parents arrive, all the parents talk about what should be done.
What seemed like a simple tale of a mother will do to protect her child, turns into much, much more. This book kept me on my toes as more twits and revelations came into play. I loved that there was never any down time in this book. Secrets, lies, power, deviance, corruption, and drugs come into play.
This book had a nice amount of tension, dread, danger, and shocking twists that kept me fully invested and turning the pages! Whew! What a ride! I had no idea where this book was going but enjoyed the ride, the investigation, and a mother's quest to save her child.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is apparently the eighth book in the author’s “Detective Dan Riley” series. This is also my first book by this author, so I didn’t realize that going in, but I would say it doesn’t matter. If you have read that series, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed by this book. If you haven’t read that series, I’m sure you won’t feel left out - normally I can’t read books from a series out of order, but this is just fine as a stand-alone book.
Christine, her husband Ed, and their son Conor live a simple life. She’s a housekeeper for the Levinsons, a powerful and wealthy political family. Their son Conor is eighteen, and is primed to have a great career in football (soccer for us Americans). They lost their daughter Cora to meningitis when she was just a baby, so Conor is their world. They would do anything for him…literally.
The book starts with Christine waking up to crying. She goes downstairs and finds Conor with Paris Levinson, teenage daughter to Helen and Bryan. They are watching news footage about a man named Mathew Reynolds, who was murdered the night before, and they are both hysterical. Before Christine can ask why, she notices the teens are covered in blood. They confess that Mathew, a drug dealer with quite a criminal history, was harassing Paris. Conor punched the man, Paris joined in, and somehow in the end, Mathew was dead.
Immediately the parents get together and make a pact that they are not going to let their only children take the fall for this crime. With Bryan Levinson’s connections, there is enough influence to make this problem go away - except Detective Riley isn’t the sort to be swayed by money. As he digs deeper into the crime, he uncovers a plethora of extenuating circumstances that just don’t make sense. Why was Mathew suddenly flush with money before his death? Why does Paris seem terrified of her parents? Why does Helen seem to not be worried at all?
This page turner was very timely, with the case against Sean “Diddy” Combs happening. This touches not just on the murder, but it’s a shocking tale of prostitution, drugs, sexual deviancy and child abuse. I was going to give it 4.5 stars all along, rounded down unless I was blown away (and as a thriller reviewer, it’s hard to blow me away). Well, blown away I was - I never saw the ending coming, and it was as fantastic as the rest of the book. 4.5 stars, rounded up!
(Thank you to Bookouture, Anna-Lou Weatherley and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be published on January 8, 2025.)
If Christine and Ed Carter could’ve predicted what awaited them downstairs when they wake up on a blissfully ignorant Sunday morning they would’ve chosen to stay in bed. The first downstairs, Christine finds her eighteen-year-old son Conor frantically pacing wearing a blood-stained T-shirt, his seventeen-year-old girlfriend Paris Levinson sobbing uncontrollably on the couch. The TV news is blaring in the background – announcing that the body of a badly beaten man has been found under a railway bridge. Conor’s tearful confession shocks Christine to the core;
“I’m sorry, Mum. I think we killed him.”
How far are two sets of parents willing to go to protect their children?
Not in a direction I was on board with that’s for sure!
Anna-Lou Weatherley consistently delivers addictive, binge-worthy, “didn’t see it coming” domestic psychological thriller/police procedures – until now that is. No. 8 (What Kind of Mother) in this series was by far the weakest instalment, and basically boiled down to a very cheesy cat-and-mouse game. Repetitive and tedious with a mixture of predictable or eye-rolling twists culminating in a lacklustre showdown, with idiot characters making stupid decisions and then being surprised at the mess they find themselves in. There were even two chapters in a row which ended with the same cliffhanger, but from different characters POV. Even seasoned Detective Dan Reilly’s investigation was “very slow on the update”. The one saving grace was his personal life, but that was a chapter at the most.
I sincerely hope Anna-Lou Weatherley returns to form in #9. However, if this one has piqued your interest but you are not a regular reader of this series, it can definitely be read as a standalone.
I usually stay far, far, away from books with these TWs but author Anna-Lou Weatherley skillfully handled these sensitive subjects with exceptional finesse and sensitivity.
I listened to all eight books in the Detective Dan Riley series, and this was one of my favorites.
Although Book 8 in the series this can 100% be read as a stand alone
The crux of this story is in the title, just what kind of Mother can/would/will do as this one does….and what is her excuse for her despicable behaviour?
The Levinsons are affluent, upright citizens of their community, MP and wife, no less…yet have never lost touch with the hard working near poverty roots of most of their constituents
Sounds good doesn’t it? And of course its totally untrue
So when their daughter Paris is under suspicion with her boyfriend Conor re a murder of a local drug dealer eyes are raised anf the Levinsons will do anything, literally anything to keep their dirty secrets secret
This is a fast paced, mega dark tale of evil, corruption, narcissism and hate with a thankfully equal measure of goodness, truth and vengeance
Probably the best book by this author have read and have loved all of her previous books but this just has the edge ( with its edginess! )
(3.5) This series is an automatic read for me! I really enjoy detective Reilly so I hope there are more to come.. (If you’re just starting, i recommend starting from the beginning. His character over time adds quite a bit to the stories.)
Imagine how you would react if your son, Conor, and his girlfriend, Paris, uttered the chilling words, “I think we killed someone.” That’s exactly what happens in this gripping instalment of the ‘Detective Dan Riley’ series.
Dan Riley, one of my favourite characters, is renowned for his uncanny gut feelings that nearly always prove to be true. In this book, we meet Christine Carter, a mild-mannered character is in disbelief, and her husband, Ed, who has made a costly mistake and is well aware of the harsh realities of jail life. Ed has shielded Christine from the true nature of prison life.
Christine’s first instinct is to call the police, but Ed takes charge and devises a plan. However, just as they’re about to implement it, a knock at the door interrupts them. They’re initially worried it’s the police, but it turns out to be Paris’s parents, Brian Levison, an MP, and his wife, Helen. Brian is a wealthy man with numerous contacts and connections in high places. To make ends meet, Christine cleans for them.
When Brian and Helen arrive, Brian takes over and reveals his agenda. The police soon arrive, and Dan senses trouble. As he delves deeper into the case, he feels like he’s being held back by the connections in high places who warn him off.
What will Dan do? Will he take a backseat?
The Levison’s are trying to portray a picture of a happy family, but why does their daughter flinch when they attempt to hug her? What secrets lie behind Helen Levinson’s strange and distracted behaviour? As the story progresses, we uncover the extent of Brian Levison’s reach and see Christine’s desperation grow as she lies to the police. She’s pushed to the brink, and we witness her determination to fight for her son and her family.
Dan and his famous gut instinct remain steadfast, prepared to follow his gut no matter who’s pulling the strings in high places.
This was a compelling read, but it did feel a bit different from the other books in the series. The ending, though shocking, left me feeling a bit unsatisfied. Nevertheless, I still give it a 4-star rating because the author’s ability to draw me into the story remains undeniable.
What Kind of Mother by Anna-Lou Weatherley is a book about the lengths a mother will go to in order to protect her child. Christine and Ed have been married a long time and together since elementary school. They have a son, Conor, who is in high school. Christine works as a housekeeper for a wealthy family a few times a week. She cleans the house and helps out where needed. Christine is shocked when Conor is with the daughter of that family in her home. Conor and Paris like each other and have been out tonight. On their way home after they'd been drinking, they ran into a man while walking. That man ended up dead. He was in really bad shape as his face had been beaten so badly that you couldn't identify him. Conor and Paris are very upset and visibly shaken. They have blood on their clothes. Were they involved in the man's beating?
Christine and Ed try to get the story out of them when the tv has breaking news about the dead man. When they're working through the events of last night there's a knock at the door. It's Paris' parents, the Levinson's. Together the parents of both kids come up with a story to protect the kids. They tell the kids to change clothes so that they can be taken away. Why doesn't Paris seem happy to see her parents? This isn't a happy family and Christine has never seen them all together when she's working in their home. She now wonders why that is? How far will parents go to protect their children?
What Kind of Mother is a terrifying book where the suspense builds an builds until you can't stop reading! I read this book in one day and it kept me on edge throughout. What Kind of Mother is a fantastic thriller that will keep your heart racing and mind guessing throughout. I rate What Kind of Mother 4 stars with a high recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of What Kind of Mother in exchange for a fair review. The book is available now and should be added to your TBR pile. #WhatKindOfMother
Anna-Lou Weatherly is the only author I keep reading, despite knowing and being confirmed to me every time, that her books have some of the most horrific crimes ever. And this one makes no exception.
Why do I keep reading them? Because I love her writing style. I really, really enjoy it. She is so gifted.
In this instalment we have the story of a normal regular couple, who's life is turned upside down in a matter of seconds and it keeps getting worse with every decision and day that goes by. Although she was well depicted and her emotions vividly painted, I was not a fan of Conor's mother. She is too much of a basket case...till a very late in the game one point.
The ending didn't disappoint even though I knew that's where we were heading and I was hoping I was wrong, not because I saw it coming, but because it was too gruesome. And I guess that's one of the beautiful skills ALW has, her penship is exquisite, allowing the reader to hope till the very end, hanging on to that thin thread (sometimes in a similar way to the characters in her books).
What Kind of Mother By: Anna-Lou Weatherley Pub Date: January 8, 2025 Publisher: Bookouture
Helen Levinson is a mother living in a home which seems perfect on the outside, but we know most things seem too perfect, are usually not. Helen’s daughter Paris is keeping a secret which can destroy EVERYTHING, and it should! Paris has become a suspect in a murder with her boyfriend Conor, who has his own troubles. I do not want to spoil anything about this novel, but it is very twisted and I did not see the twist coming, but was BLOWN away with the things that went on with this family.
I have read all the books in the Dan Riley series and I have loved all of them. I think this series needs to be read!
I could not put this one down. What a great concept. Poor Christine wakes to hear a commotion downstairs and before she knows what is going on her son has confessed to murder and the police are knocking on the door... what lengths will she have to go to in order to protect her son?
I love the writing style and how we get to see the story unfold through detective Dan Riley, but also the family impacted by the events. It works beautifully in ramping up the tension as you the reader try to piece it together.
Dan is a great character and he follows his gut. I like that he seems relatable and fair in his decision making. I thought the author did a great job with the other characters especially Christine as she struggles to cope with her world falling apart.
Such a page turner with all the twists and turns I have grown to love from Anna-Lou Weatherley. She is a definite go to author for me. Highly recommend this if you love a great thriller/Crime read.
With huge thanks to the author and Bookoture for a copy of the book. This is my honest review which I'm leaving voluntarily.
Detective Dan Riley, we meet again following you and Lucy on the hunt of a killer once more.
A good mother does everything in her power to protect her child even if she has to cross a line she would normally never cross. She has to choose between a rock and a hard place and she picks the only thing she believes will bring the outcome she wants and hopes for.
Not every mother is a good one though. There are the ones putting themselves first and by doing so throwing their child under the bus.
This is the story about two mothers, but what kind of mothers are they...?
Lying, cheating, blackmail are a few of the ingredients of this delicious book. Some people see these as normal things is life. Others only use them as a last resort.
I admire Dan for colouring outside of the boxes. Not because he wants to be a rebel per se, but because his gut feeling tells him he is on the right track. He does not step down, but keeps on believing his instincts.
Another amazing Detective Dan Riley book. I love how these can be standalones or read as a series. Each case is the main focus, with Detective Riley and his family life being a light back story. This case was fascinating. How far would you go to protect your child? Would you lie for them? Cover up a murder? I love how Detective Riley always fights for the truth and justice, even when he’s told not to. He always stands up for what’s right and fair. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
If you have an Audible membership, this whole series is included for free and they are very enjoyable. You get different viewpoints, including Dan Riley, the detective investigating each case. I found it very easy to root for the family in this case and, although the story is signposted throughout, I was keen to get to the resolution.
What Kind Of Mother, is the eighth installment in the Dan Riley mystery series by Anna Lou Weatherly, on a Sunday morning Connor Carter and Paris Levins, wake their parents up to tell them they think they’re murderers Connor‘s parents are shook, but Paris‘s parents go on immediate defense and it’s up to detective Dan Riley and his crew, to figure out what really happened. The case will bring Dan to the ugly underbelly of the town he loves but DNA will bring it right back to the teenagers. Who killed Matt Shepherd and why? I really like these books. I love that they’re standalone and read like thrillers and although there’s a bit far-fetchedness with some of the story, I would still absolutely recommend it. I love that. Dan is respectful to everyone until giving a reason not to be. I thought the intrigue with his boss trying to rush the case added another level to the story and I absolutely love the way. The book ended. I don’t like when I think I know how it’s going to end and although I’ve only read three books in the series, I’ve never guessed the ending not once this time included.#NetGalley, #AnnaLouWeatherly, #WhatKindOfMother, #DetectiveDanRileyMysteries,
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Ed and Christine are struggling financially amd still mourning the loss of their yoing daughter many years ago it are basically happy with their teenage son Conor. One night Conor and his girlfriend, Paris. are inconsolable thinking that they murdered someone after a night at the club. Ed and Christine band together with Paris’ parents to cover it up but they really may not be on the same team
I really like this author and this series. I think the books are very dependable reads. This one was good but a little too far fetched to be a 5 star. Regardless, I read it in two days and overall enjoyed it and will definitely be reading her next novel.
A parent, especially a mother would go to extreme lengths to protect her child. Christine and Ed have already experienced more than most people are asked to handle in a lifetime. I liked them and probably would have reacted and acted very similarly. Helene was messed up and a very flawed character. Her maternal instincts were worse than a feral cat. I liked Dan the best. He was dogged, determined, and a dad who faced with a major discovery in his own family, sees things from the parental perspective. The book has lots of twists and unexpected angles!l Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early read.
I'm a terrible liar because I thoroughly believe the truth is the only way. I identified with Christine because I'd handle lying as bad as she did. I've enjoyed all but one of this series and I'm so glad this author has gotten back on track. I liked both Christine and Ed, finally a supportive husband! Ed sees this situation from a different pov and I can understand why so I still liked him even if he lies. All in all it was a good book. Some parts were a little unbelievable but it didn't hurt my enjoyment.
This book was brilliant start to finish, so many twists. The corruption at the top so to speak is believable. If I’m honest it probably happens. I didn’t want this book to end. I would love a sequel to see what happens to Paris and Christine’s lives.
Uhm, some ridiculous choices by the characters and predictability and plot moving forward purely due to frustration dampened this one for me. Some books you are excited to get to the end to see what happens, this is a book I wanted it to end to be done with it.
This is book eight in the series and they just keep getting better and better with DCI Dan Riley again at the forefront of another case. As the books progress we learn more about him and if I was in trouble I would be very happy to have him on my side.. We are introduced to the Levinsons, a family that are well off and well respected in their community. their daughter Paris soon falls on troubled times, felt to be involved in the death of a local drug dealer but are things really as they seem? The Levinsons will not have their reputation tarnished and will do anything to keep this, they are determined to keep their dirty laundry from prying eyes. How far as a mother would you go to protect your child, a long way it seems in this scenario.
There is a lot going on behind the scenes, secrets and lies, cheating and as I said reputations on the line. I was thoroughly invested in this story and raced through the book in record time, not wanting to put it down. If you are looking for an excellent book to escape from daily life then I am sure this will do so for you, I think this is the best book yet in the series. If you are going to take this on I would still suggest beginning ta the first book, as always character development can be everything and this is the case with this authors latest work. Loved it!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy, all opinions expressed are my own.
3.5* Lots of great twists and turns; many clues that lead the reader down the wrong path while drawing faulty conclusions; an almost satisfying ending except for pesky reality poking its head where we don't want it. The rich and powerful get the tidy wrap up; the everyday man and woman almost get the life they deserve. Police and politicians are corrupt, per the usual, and no one in higher echelons faces tough consequences. And a fairy tale is constructed so that reputations remain in tact.
The narration was almost great except (there's always an "except") for the fact that the narrator was a man, which in and of itself is fine, but without any change in voice he spoke all the women characters' parts. It was disconcerting and distracting to realize that I was listening to portions of the story believing that a male character was speaking, only to belatedly understand that one of the female characters was being voiced. I know that had I paid exacting attention to the title of each chapter (which are character names) I would have had the forewarning that I needed to know who was speaking. I find that kind of minutiae tiresome.
Audiobook review under construction 🚧::This book is good so far Dan and his partner are back. The crime is interesting. and involves two teens who murder a man and their parents are thus brought together. Carter and Christine are the parents of the Connor, who is the son and Helene and Brian are Paris’s parents. They’re rich and Christine is their housekeeper. Being parents they want to cover up the murder and protect their children, which is the stupidest mistake ever. Everyone is making stupid choices to evade the cops. Christine and Ed are caught up because of their son but are good people. The Levinson’s are rich entitled sociopaths. Dan and his partner Lucy(think that’s her name) have very good instincts and reservations about the Levinson’s, but their boss Archer, doesn’t care about justice when it comes to holding rich white people accountable. She is THE WORST. She’s a coward and a disappointment. Absolutely useless. All she talks about is playing the game, but if that’s the case, why have this job in the first place? I am absolutely no fan of cops irl and this is why. I absolutely hate her character. Loser.
