My favorite annual pre-season read. Love to reference it throughout the season when I come across players/prospects I've never heard of.

Mostly I'd re-up what I wrote about last year's edition. Like 2024 American League Cy Young-award-winning pitcher Tarik Skubal, who happens to play for my favored team, these yearly volumes have found an excellent groove.

All you gotta do is assemble an all-star cast of the best baseball writers (many of whom write about plenty of other things) to do their thing. Meanwhile, compile hundreds of human-written snippets on every single active-ish player, and provide insight or at least some pretty good jokes every single time.

What I am saying is, these volumes are each something of a miracle. If you don't care about baseball that's a defensible life choice. But also it means these books are meaningless to you, and so this is a pleasure you will never, ever experience in your short time on Earth. But your call.

I've been reading Baseball Prospectus from its beginnings. While it may have lost a little of its edge and snark since the original great baseball revolutionaries of its founding and early days, it remains essential baseball reading. I love all the great baseball writers; Posnanski, Angell, Verduci, James etc., but if you want the smartest baseball writing available, I couldn't recommend any book more than Baseball Prospectus yearly annual. Whether you are looking for a new perspective on the game, insight on your favorite team, or player information, Baseball Prospectus has it all.

As usual, some essays are brilliant, some skew so personal the "preview" aspect seems totally forgotten. For the most part, it's as great as ever, but they really need to stop handing team chapters off to fans of rivals for uninformative essays. When the BP staff writes, it's excellent. (also, the White Sox chapter might be the exception that proves the rule)
