In the small, close-knit town of Greer, Georgia, Tiffany Weathers and Mason Boom are two souls bound by a destiny neither of them can explain. From the first shared glance, Mason feels an unshakable connection to Tiffany, a recognition so profound it feels like he’s finally found the missing piece of himself. Tiffany, equally captivated, finds herself drawn to the life that Mason seems to offer—a life filled with love, family, and security. But as they navigate the peaks and valleys of adolescence into adulthood, they face unforeseen trials that test the depths of their love and resilience.
As they mature, Mason’s journey to become an NFL star pulls him into a world of fame and glamour. Tiffany, meanwhile, builds a life for herself as a successful dancer and studio owner, establishing stability for her son, Drew, and creating the quiet, fulfilling life she’s always wanted. Yet, despite their separate paths, fate continues to pull them together, forging a connection that remains unbroken even by time and distance.
Years later, Mason returns to Greer with a renewed determination to finally claim the life he’s always envisioned—with Tiffany at its center. For both, it’s a return not just to each other but to the dreams they’ve held onto through years of separation and growth. Reunited, Tiffany and Mason decide they’re done with the years of waiting and misunderstanding. Instead, they commit to building a life together, ready to face whatever challenges come their way. This time, they refuse to let anything or anyone tear them apart.
In The World Around Us, Mason and Tiffany’s love story unfolds as a testament to destiny’s intricate design, where fate, secrets, and shared history bind them in ways even they cannot fully comprehend. Their journey is an exploration of resilience, hope, and the unshakable belief that fate never fails and love will always prevail.
This small-town second-chance sports romance will keep you on the edge of your seat, on the brink of tears, overcome with laughter, and rooting for a love that refuses to fade.
I'm a romance author originally from Savannah, Georgia, now living in Atlanta with my husband and children. With a B.A. in English from Armstrong Atlanta State University and an M.A. from Southern New Hampshire University, I transitioned from writing poetry to crafting love stories that mirror my Southern heritage as a woman, wife, and mother. My stories delve into themes of love and commitment, often against a backdrop of personal and societal challenges.
Aside from writing, I am deeply committed to my family. I enjoy coaching my kids’ soccer teams, traveling, and watching movies at home on a Friday night. I credit my close-knit family and supportive readers for inspiring me to continue writing stories that resonate on a personal level. As an indie author, my narratives offer a sincere exploration of human emotions, underscoring the importance of love, resilience, and the beauty found in overcoming adversity.
4/5 - Absolutely loved this story so much!! If you enjoy Brittainy cherry’s writing, you’ll really love this one so much. It was emotional, dramatic, and heartfelt. So excited that this is going to be a new series! - Don’t let the cover of this book fool you! It’s full of so many tough moments and could be a book that will make you cry, but it’s also a book you won’t want to put down! - I’m not someone that usually loves long romance books, but this one had SO much packed into it that I kept turning page after page to see what would happen next.
When you read this book the first thing that comes to mind is Love, Family, and Football‼️ It was giving Best Man Holiday, The Game, & Love Jones all in one. Mason Boom and Tiffany Weathers were a match made in heaven. “Every football player needs his dancer!” I just loved them together the chemistry, the vibes, the sexual encounters it was all so romantic and perfect.
Oh and the DRAAAAMMA cause there was plenty made the book so much more than your typical Black romance. It was giving Lifetime movie vibes with the way the author flipped the story and took us back to the beginning of what created the Mase and Tiff duo. Part 2 pulled me in so deep I had to see it through and find out the truth about everything.
I loved the relationships between all of the characters Mel and Bash were two of my favorite. But I really adored Drew and Mason’s relationship because only a real man would do the things he did for Drew.
My only downsides were the fact Mase and Tiff kept referring to each other by full name and the book seemed a bit drawn out. Overall, I enjoyed this one it was definitely worth the read and I can’t wait to read more sports romance. Special thanks to the author & @coloredpagesbt for my gifted copy‼️
THE AUTHOR HAS A WAY OF WRITING HER CHARACTERS THAT MAKES THEM SO REAL AND RELATABLE. I JUST LOVE TIFFANY AND MASON. I ENJOYED READING THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER EVOLVE INTO WHAT IT WAS MEANT TO BE. THIS IS A SPORTS ROMANCE THATS FILLED WITH OTHER TOPICS THAT BROUGHT THIS STORY TOGETHER BEAUTIFULLY.
THANK YOU LAUREN FOR GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNIT TO READ THIS ARC! I ENJOYED IT SO MUCH!🤎
I can tell that the author cares greatly about the topics this book has within by her author’s note and what she’s said about the book on her social media! However, the writing style and characters were not for me and I DNF’d at 21%. I wish this author the very best, and hope that the people who loved this book help it reach its audience!
I had the opportunity of being an ARC reader for this book and I am so grateful that I was selected because this is honestly an amazing read. I think this is a great embodiment of Black romance highlighting the beauty and ugly in relationships. This is a story that is much more than just a romance though. It is a story with many different levels dealing with the complexities of dysfunctional family dynamics, friendships, self-development, and healing. As it pertains to the family dynamic and history it is important that readers pay close attention to the details otherwise they may miss some super important information that may be pertinent to the overall story.
Initially, I did rate this book a 5 but I brought it back down to 4 stars because it is a very drawn out story. For me this was a slow burner and took way longer than I anticipated to complete. In my opinion I also felt that “the world around us” was overused throughout the book. I don’t mind the reference back to the title of the book, but for me it was a little too much. It was everywhere and that repetition was slightly jarring.
Overall, this book dives into some really important topics and touches of a variety of different themes. I really enjoyed the overall story.
This was a very interesting read and kept me entertained but not because of the love story. From the book cover I thought I was about to get a nice little sports romance love story of them, but I don’t think this was that. To me this read as a women’s fiction with some mystery/suspense mixed in. Towards the end I wasn’t even worrying about Mason and Tiffany being together but more so on the things that happened with their families through the years and how they would figure it all out.
Now I will say that no matter what happened Mason did not let Tiffany get too far away. They always seemed to find themselves back to one another which I did love. I always knew she was who he wanted, and he didn’t stop until that happened.
All in all, this was a good story that involved family trauma, founded families, heartbreak, and love. I am glad that everything turned out the way it did in the end, and they were finally able to all be at peace and love one another the way they deserved.
This was an ARC copy so I know this may not be the full edited version but there were times where things would be written twice. Hopefully those things are fixed before the final copy is released.
I really wanted to get into this one but I just couldn’t. I felt like the story had this ominous cloud of confusion throughout the story. It dragged on and on with what happened in the past and the internal dialogue of the main characters was so stupid and unnecessary. The round and round of their non relationship- relationship was corny, yall are two grown adults pining over each other for no reason. I found myself skimming through the book way too much. I tried to get 100 pages in, which was a struggle but I got further than that and it just felt pointless to continue wasting my time with this read. I chose not to finish because I just couldn’t anymore. It’s wack af, sorry not sorry.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All reviews and thoughts are my own.
When I say this title truly lives up to its meaning, I mean it. It's been a while since I've read about a character who is this dedicated to another person. The story takes us on a journey with Tiffany Weathers, a woman who has been through hell and back. Her resilience in bouncing back from such traumatic experiences is nothing short of empowering. She shares a deep bond with her sister, Tiny, and later forms meaningful connections with other incredible people. Tiffany's passion for dance and her ability to capture Mason Boom's heart are both captivating.
Mason Boom is the kind of guy who has a heart of gold. From the start, he declares his love for Tiffany, and nothing—literally nothing—can tear him away from her. His devotion is unwavering. Mason is a star athlete, but he's also known his fair share of heartbreak. Despite the pain he's endured, it doesn’t stop him from believing in love. He knows who he wants, and his love for Tiffany never wavers.
There were plenty of “pearl-clutching” moments, and let’s be honest—there were times I just wanted to roll my eyes at some of the characters. But that didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story. I was completely invested. With all the struggles they faced along the way, I found myself rooting for Tiffany and Mason to get the happy ending they so deserved. And when I say the ending was beautiful, I truly mean it.
I’m a sucker for second-chance romances, and when you throw in a supportive friend group, it’s a total win. There may be moments when Tiffany stresses you out or leaves you wondering why she acts the way she does, but once you dive deeper into her backstory, you understand. This story took me on a rollercoaster ride, but in the end, I was thoroughly pleased with how everything came together. Nothing mattered more than “You, Me, and the World Around Us.” Tiffany and Mason stood strong on that sentiment.
“Tiffany is one of those women you have to wear down because while I consider love a necessity, she considers love a luxury she could never afford. “ - Mason Boom
I received an ARC copy of The World Around Us in exchange for my honest review, and wow—this book is so much more than it appears! Looking at the cover, you might expect a lighthearted love story between two college kids, but it’s far deeper than that. This isn’t just about their love story; it’s about their life story—together.
Lauren Lacey masterfully captures every aspect of love, hurt, anger, and happiness, making this book an emotional yet rewarding journey. Fair warning: this is a heavy read and touches on sensitive topics such as child abuse, sexual violence, drug abuse, death, and parental loss. Despite the tough themes, it’s absolutely worth the read.
Tiffany Weathers has endured unimaginable hardships, but her resilience is inspiring. She emerges from the flames a stronger woman, mother, friend, and wife. Watching her earn her forever as the “football player’s dancer” was so satisfying!
Then there’s Mason Boom—a man who loves deeply and refuses to give up. His “cinnamon roll” love for Tiff is unwavering, even if it means waiting more than a decade for his chance. His devotion is heartwarming and relentless.
This story is layered with complex relationships and unforgettable characters. Tiny, for example, broke my heart. I wanted to hug her and shake her, desperate to see her return to the loving little girl she once was. The parents and Drew brought their own weight to the story, and the pain of all they lost—especially time—was devastating.
The love story between Tiff and Mason feels real and genuine, never forced or fake. Lauren Lacey’s attention to detail is impeccable, drawing you into every moment. I was hooked from the start and couldn’t stop until I saw how it all ended, even if I had a sense of where it was headed.
This book will make you fall in love with every character…except for the “terrible two” who wreak havoc on Greer, Georgia, and leave destruction in their wake.
Now, I’m just waiting on what’s to come next in her Playing for Keeps sports romance series! I must know what’s happening with the family!
If you’re okay with a 3/5 spice level and don’t mind the emotional weight of the themes, The World Around Us is an absolute must-read. Lauren Lacey has crafted a powerful, heartfelt story that stays with you long after the last page.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
TW: This book is raw, real, and deeply emotional—you might cry.
I loved how the author masterfully blended a romantic love story between Mase and Tiffany with heavier, serious topics like drug abuse, sexual assault, and parent and child loss. These themes were explored with sensitivity, showing how their impact lingers and shapes lives. The balance between love and adversity was well-crafted, making the story both poignant and inspiring. Tiffany and Tiny’s childhood backstory was absolutely heartbreaking. Reading about their struggles was tough, but it reflected real-life situations that happen every day and leave lasting scars.
Despite the hardships, it was beautiful to witness how Tiffany and Mason faced their challenges head-on. Their journey, from childhood friends to lifelong partners, was rocky but so rewarding. Their chemistry was undeniable, and watching them grow together and support each other through every stage of life was inspiring. Tiffany’s foster family and Mason’s unwavering love were integral to her resilience and healing. Honestly, everyone deserves a partner like Mason—his admiration for Tiffany through every age and circumstance was breathtaking.
However, one thing that slightly detracted from the story was the constant repetition of the phrase, “you and me against the world.” With the book titled The World Around Us, the sentiment was already clear, and the overuse of this line felt unnecessary—almost like over-explaining an already well-conveyed theme. Additionally, some parts of the story felt overly drawn out. While the plot was compelling, I think the book could have told the same story more concisely without losing its impact.
Overall, this was an emotional, thought-provoking read with a great plot. Despite minor pacing issues and repetitive phrasing, the story was beautifully crafted, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This is a solid 4 star read for me!
Whew this story was beautiful, I really enjoyed the emotional roller coaster of Mase and Tiffany. This was my first read from the author and I really enjoyed the unique story line.
It’s been a few days since I finished this book and these characters stuck with me. Check your triggers before reading, but I highly recommend this book. This book captivated me from the first page. I became invested in how this story would unfold. I really appreciated not only the characters’ growth throughout the story, but the MMC and FMC realizing that they weren’t ok and needed therapy. The fact that they wanted to feel whole individually before starting a relationship, while acknowledging their traumatic pasts. 👏🏽
Mase and Tiffany had an undeniable and unbreakable bond. However, each time they seemed to get their relationship on level footing, life would happen and they would separate only to return to each other. They both deal with trauma of their past, and this plays a part in their love cycle. Their love was intense, all consuming, and possessive. Some viewed it as toxic, some viewed it as fate. I love how they had such supportive friends and family, (surrogate and natural). While their love story was the main plot, there were elements of abuse, sexual molestation, sex trafficking, murder, as well a showcase of independent, successful men and women of color. If you are looking for an intense love story this is one for you. I will admit it took a min for the story to connect all of the dots, but keep reading. I also feel the build up to bringing the source of their grief and heartache to justice culminated rather quickly. It is evident the author wanted to convey how people can love intensely, genuinely, and honestly but still have roadblocks to their happily ever after. I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to this author for the opportunity.

There were aspects about this book that I liked and some I didn't care for as much. I liked the idea of Tiffany and Mase being drawn to each other from their younger years before he really knew for a fact who she was. I also thought it was nice how once Tiffany met Mel and she introduced her to the Boom boys they all just welcomed her into their fold so easily. Actually everyone in Greer who she crossed paths with from the kids to the adults seemed very welcoming which was a breath of fresh air for Tiffany.
Now for the parts that didn't really do it for me as much, a lot happened with Tiffany and the group when they were young and trying to find her sister Tiny and once they got into a jam that's when they pulled the parents in who helped "fix" things. It seemed like the parents were in a position to do this and have been known for finding and fixing things so I didn't understand why they kids wouldn't ask for help in the beginning from them instead of trying to do things on their own. It also wasn't made clear what Callie and Sherri did to male situations go away so it would have been nice for that to be expanded upon a little more since it was brought up a few times in the book. The use of their commo phrase made sense with the title of the book but at times I felt it was overly used. Considering that Mase and Tiffany made plans to meet again once Drew turned 16 and she knew he was coming back to Greer and wanted him after time had passed, I didn't see why she was acting the way she was acting towards him in the beginning of the book.
Overall I was happy that with all the challenges they faced to be together that Tiffany and Mase finally got what they wanted at the end but I felt there were some details missing from things brought up in the book and at some times I found myself saying well what else is going to become a barrier for these two.
This book gave me so many feels. The first feel was confusion because the book starts in the present and I knew the backstory was missing and I needed that. Then when we move to the past I have anguish and horror for what happens to Tiny and Tiffany. As the story progresses I’m frustrated that Tiffany and Mason’s love for each other keeps getting blocked. Finally there’s joy as Tiffany and Mason get their HEA.
A bit about the story! Y’all Lauren Lacey packed so much into these 454 pages. There’s death of family members that affect the family group. There’s an abduction, child abuse, murder and child sexual abuse. There’s drug use and the horrors of living with a drug addicted parent.
There’s also redemption, familial love, a caring community, sibling love and a healthy relationship with therapy for healing. There’s football, jealousy and a ton of pettiness. But Lauren Lacey carries it all off and never drops a ball.
It’s a social commentary masked in a romance novel. I loved every bit of this book, even the parts that made me gasp and cry. The prevailing theme - love conquers all and lasts for a lifetime if you dont give up on it.
It was so worth the read. Highly encourage you to read it too!
Rating 4.75 Spice rating: 🌶️🌶️ Fate never fails—a phrase that echoes throughout Tiffany and Mason’s story.
I had the amazing opportunity to read an ARC of The World Around Us.
This love story follows Tiffany Weathers and Mason Boom a second-chance at a happy ending. Like any good second-chance story, the characters find their way back to each other, but it’s the journey to their happy ending that had me crying and sliding down the wall. I wanted to hug them so badly—especially Tiffany. As much as I wanted to punch her stubborn self, I loved every moment of unraveling her story and seeing how she became Tiffany Nicole Weathers. There were parts where I didn’t know what to expect and moments that left me feeling sick to my stomach, but I’m so glad she made it through.
Mason is THE bookish boyfriend, lol. I loved that he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. His random outbursts and bluntness had me laughing, and honestly, I was close to texting an ex or two while reading 🤣.
One thing that stood out beautifully is how real the love and friendship between Tiffany and Mason felt. It didn’t feel forced or like they needed to be together—it just made sense. The phrase “the world around us” perfectly captures Tiff and Mase’s story. It’s a reminder that everyone and everything has a story, each piece contributing to a larger masterpiece. The found family aspect of this book shines through in such a heartfelt way.
Absolutely 5 stars! 3 words: Beautiful , heartwarming and inspiring! This book was a journey. I felt all the emotions from the beginning to the end! This was a masterpiece! It was written perfectly. It gasps my heart and soul going through the pain and love of Tiffany and Mason’s story. It was not your typical romance story , it was more of a life story giving us the real and raw experiences. It was about founded family, healing from childhood trauma, heartbreak and true love. I love the sister bond that Tiffany and Tiny had in this book. I would love to have a sister! Their relationship was unbreakable and intense but they never lost each other. I knew this book would be one of my favorites just the way it captured my heart. I was speechless and very emotional multiple times. I love the build up, I enjoy the suspense and the storyline. I receive all the feels from this story. It was an amazing journey . I really value and appreciate this story. It was beautiful. I can rave about this book all day!
‘But this win is for you, Tiff. This win is for our family. It’s me, you, Drew, and the world around us.”
CW: child abuse, sexual abuse, sexual violence, drug addiction, violence, parental loss
The World Around us by Lauren Lacey is a second chance romance about family, trauma, healing, growth, resilience, grief, friendships, and trust. The story takes place in Greer, Georgia. Mason and Tiffany’s love story highlights the ups and downs of life and relationships. There are many flashbacks, they went through traumatic experiences in their families and lives. There are heavy topics being discussed in this book, it helps the readers learn that you aren’t alone, holding onto hope and not giving up on the people who mean the most. This is the first sports romance book that I have read, it’s real, emotional and intense. Thanks to author Lauren Lacey for writing a beautiful story and hear our voices tours for organizing this book tour.
I went into this novel expecting a cute second chance romance and got that plus so much more. This is the story of two people who were destined to be together but had to overcome a few obstacles and really experience personal growth. I felt so proud of them at the end of the book and wanted to be part of the family / friend group.
Tiffany and Mase were each other's person, and I'm convinced they loved each other in another lifetime. The way Mase was down bad for his girl and never wavered was on another level. He was 'my girl, my girl, my girl' about her. "Every football player needs his dancer," and Tiffany was it for him every single time! "Mase's world revolves around me. My presence, my needs, my crises..." The intensity of their connection and angst was palpable! I absolutely adored them together.
Be forewarned that this story is more than just a romance between this young couple. There are other situations that occur in this novel that may trigger you or cause you to square up with these fictional characters. Just know that the story will keep you invested all the way through.
I absolutely loved The World Around Us by Lauren Lacey! Tiffany and Mason’s journey is such a beautiful reminder that love, when it’s real, can endure anything. Their story taught me the importance of resilience, trust, and believing in fate—even when life doesn’t go as planned.
What I learned from this book is that sometimes life’s challenges are necessary for growth, and true love will always find its way back, no matter the obstacles. It’s a powerful story about holding onto hope and not giving up on the people who mean the most.
If you’re looking for a heartfelt, second-chance romance, this is a must-read!
“People may try to hurt you. They may even break you, but what’s broken can be fixed, and what’s hurt can be healed. No one can destroy you.”
This book exceeded my expectations, to say the least! Romance isn’t typically my go-to genre, but this second-chance love story truly left an impact. It’s layered with so much—found family, childhood trauma, and, of course, an undying romance. This story beautifully illustrates how everything works out at the right time, reminding us that we aren’t always in control of our own destiny. I can confidently say this is a must-read romance that offers so much more than expected. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in the future!
Can I just say how much I LOVE Lauren Lacey! She’s done it again. Love you, always is one of my favorite reads of 2024 and now this! I loved this book. I laughed, cried, got pissed off, annoyed all the feels but the ending was just PERFECT. I can’t wait to see who the next book will be focused on! READ THIS BOOK! Definitely need the physical book to add to my shelf! 💛💛
This book took me on an emotional roller coaster. Love, loss, hope, faith, disappointment and divine timing. I fell hard for these characters and deeply felt what they went through. What a wild ride. Loved it!
Lauren Lacey’s The World Around Us is an intimate story that beautifully explores life, love, and healing. Lacey handles challenging themes like grief, trauma, etc., with care, so check trigger warnings before diving in.
The love and friendship between Tiffany and Mason stood out beautifully—it felt natural, unforced, and full of understanding. The title 'The World Around Us' perfectly captures their story and serves as a reminder that everyone and everything has a part to play in our individual lives. The found family aspect stood out to me. It's heartfelt and added warmth to the journey.
Lacey’s writing is poetic without overdone, with flawed yet relatable characters and vivid storytelling. The pacing slowed slightly in the middle, but the emotional payoff in the final chapters made it worth it.
I read an ARC copy, so the line book will undoubtedly be well-polished in the final version. This is a thoughtful and reflective read for anyone who loves stories that make you think and feel.
I received an early Arc. Spoilers . . . . . . . . . . . . .
At first, I didn't care for going back to the past, but now I realized that was silly. I absolutely loved their story. I loved how they loved each other. They've been through so much and I'm glad they can finally have a happy ending. It drove me crazy with the near misses and I hate what Tiny been through. There was some repeated sentences and it would have been nice to see more of a relationship with her adopted parents, but overall I'm in love.
Baby, Miss Lauren has done it again! One thing about Lauren and her writing, she is going to immerse you into these characters’ lives! Her storytelling is so vivid and beautiful, they just make you feel all the feels!
This story follows Tiffany Weathers and Mason Boom’s journey from childhood to adulthood. Each character’s development and growth was so unique and amazing to read. I laughed, I cried, but most of all, this story was a story of perseverance for both characters! I felt such joy by the end! Whatever Lauren writes, I’ma read it. Period. Check your triggers before reading.
