You know how they say all that glitters isn’t gold? Turns out, they were talking about this book series. What promised to be a dazzling fantasy adventure ended up being more like a tarnished trinket.

First off, the plot. Or should I say, the lack thereof? I’ve seen paint dry with more excitement. The storyline meandered like it was on a Sunday stroll, forgetting that readers usually prefer a brisk jog, if not a full-on sprint. I mean, come on, where's the urgency?

And then there are the characters. If cardboard cutouts could talk, they’d probably have more depth and personality. I couldn’t relate to or root for any of them. They were flatter than yesterday’s soda.

Now, I’ll give credit where it’s due: the cover art is stunning. If only the content inside matched up. But alas, like a disappointing birthday gift, it was all wrapping and no substance.

In short, the *Gild* series by Raven Kennedy was a gilded disappointment. Here’s hoping that in the future, Kennedy’s storytelling shines as brightly as the book covers.

***POSSIBLE SPOILERS***

I can get impatient with what I feel are slow beginnings. And I especially have a hard time with meek and weak FMCs. Initially I found myself frustrated by Auren and I didn't know if I could hang with her. I couldn't understand how someone could be so blind and weak. I didn't know I'd need to read book 2 until the very end of book one. I definitely did not expect to find myself sucked in for six books straight. By far my longest (audio)book relationship.

I usually have a two book minimum in any series before I need to mix it up a little, with a totally different trope. Then I may or may not come back to the series.

The ending of every book gave me no choice but to keep going. I have never loved and hated a slow build so much, but it absolutely had to happen that way and I'm thrilled that I kept going. So many characters were unraveled in heart-wrenching detail. I made new acquaintances with each character and it would be multiple books of not knowing if some were friend or foe. If I would or should like them or not. But the careful unfurling of each character history helped me understand them as they started. Then I was absolutely sucked into witnessing the beautiful evolution of some characters as they found their own strength, fight, and purpose. As they find and fight for love and family, and a family made of friends. The character development and intertwined storylines of each life and story of love was worth every minute of every book. I did not realize how deeply I would invest in the lives (an sometimes deaths) of those who would come to feel like dear friends. I relished in every deserved/painful downfall or demise of a villain.

I love Auren and Slade. I feel like I lived a lifetime with each of them. I love how her ribbons made me experience the same range of emotions that all my favorite characters do. I sobbed ugly tears for a few minutes when I finished Goldfinch. Reading the last book was a strange dichotomy of needing to finally know how it ends, and being so unready for it to end and trying to slow it down so I could just keep living in their world with them.

I do feel there are a some open endings. Things I didn't quite get closure on. I hope that's by design because I'll happily dive in to any future books that may dig in to those continued storylines.

All in all, this is officially my favorite series. So so beautifully done. I wish I could experience it again for the first time.

Anthony Palmini and Lilly Drake were perfect together in this dual narration.

Ugh, this series is a hard one to review because it felt like multiple mini series. The plot was great up until a point. I thought, "Wow that's a satisfying ending" just to realize I still had three more books to read. I understand taking a series deeper than the original plot line seemed to entail, but it became a chore to finish the series. I think it was interesting to see Auren step into her power and beliefs but I feel like it didnt require three more books. Slade is hot but at what cost when you have to hype yourself up to finish the series?

Book 1 is a tough start—emotionally heavy and a bit slow—but trust me, stick with it. By Book 2, the heat kicks in and doesn’t let up. I was absolutely hooked on this dark and brilliant retelling of King Midas.

Slade… my god. The ultimate god-tier book boyfriend. I’ve read so many Romantasy series, and he still reigns supreme. The lengths he goes to for Auren? It will wreck you. I’m still swooning.

The spice? ON. POINT. The worldbuilding is rich, the war-torn setting gripping, and the twists—utterly heart-stopping. This series is criminally under-hyped and 100% worth the binge. A must-read for any Romantasy lover!

dnf at book 4 and went to reddit for the rest. The story idea is great. its unique and different, and oh man, this poor girl/ woman. BUT I feel like sometimes the author couldn't decide exactly who the characters were and didn't nail the character's voice. It also wasn't the best writing. I think if those two things were cleaned up and it was shortened to maybe a trilogy, it would be AMAZING.

Guild-
Auren- perpetually positive despite living in a cage. Feels like she should be thankful for being kept safe. She’s in love with her captor. Clearly has the personality of an abuser. Gaslighter. But then at the end we discover she is the one to be gold touching everything, not Midas. So his claim to the throne with his power is a shame which is why he is keeping her caged.

Glint- we get queen Malina’s POV. Gaining alies trying to take back high bell castle. Auren and Midas have a long history together. She feels thankful he saved her in the alleyway. She mentions this in the first book.
With 4ths army. Auren meets the mender hojat. Army generals (Osrik & Lu) Judd, keg the cook. Finds out Mist is pregnant. Everything she is asked makes her question her love for Midas. She admits to rip and herself that she’s fae. We learn that Malina is the one who hired the red raids to take the royal caravan. Rip and Auren grow closer as they reach 5th kingdom. She describes never feeling like a prisoner with him. Becoming reunited with Midas she sees the relationship for what it is. She refuses to be caged when he tries and she accidentally uses her power to kill an innocent person, proving to herself that she needs to be locked away. King ravenger negotiates no war with 5th in exchange for deadwell, a section of 5ths territory. Auren learns rip is the same person as king ravenger.

Gleam-exploring 5th kingdom, Auren is exercising her new found freedom. We get a glimpse into Auren’s past where she was first a pickpocket then a prostitute when she turned 15. Malina tries to have the poor villagers of 6th love her but she’s not well received. Auren sees ravenger and rip side by side which is confusing. Visits saddles and sees they are on Dew. Makes plan with Rissa to escape. Midas tells Auren Digby is alive! Thank the gods. But he is leveraged to have Auren behave. Midas wants malina to pretend Mists baby is his. She won’t do it. Midas will send one of king folks fae warriors to murder her. Hosting 3rds queen and brother (Manu) and brothers husband (kian). Queen has power to pull voices or eliminate them. 6th kingdom is rioting- caste is breached. Why does ravenger want deadwell? Gerard village. Auren and slade get together and it’s hot 🥵. He’s good at dirty talk. She sneaks out of the castle and is caught by queen kyla who tells her to leave and she will kill mist. Messenger hawks all come to slade. Midas drugs auren. He cuts off her ribbons. She rebels by not guilding for him Midas admits he was the “Bardon east” she left second kingdom to get away from ten years ago. He manipulated her from the very start. Midas poisons niven (5ths young prince) in front of everyone and frames slade. Midas threatens auren and her power comes alive and kills Midas. She uses it too much and burns out. Slade has to rot her.

Glow- more POV Queen Kaila. Rissa. Osrik. Slade. Auren. kyla thinks auren steala powers. Slade is worried he killed auren. History of 8 year old slade and brother ryatt and mother. Slow but I guess it has to be to feel the anxiety of whether she’s going to wake up or not. Then when she finally wakes up, holy hell 🌶️🌶️🌶️. Auren is able to be vulnerable with slade even though her entire world has been tilted on its axis. Malina remembers being courted by Midas. Traveling with only pruen since geo was killed in gleam. We see slades father being built up as a villain. Auren is healing mentally and physically. Training her magic and body. She talks about the first time she killed someone with her magic. In carnith. Millie’s brother and Millie herself. Malia explores 7th kingdom ruins. Meets twins. Fossa and frianu. Kingdom looks restored. Auren meets slades mom. Ryatt is only half brother. Slade shows her the rip in the world. Queen Kaila calls for auren to answer for her crimes. The carriage scene 🥵🔥🌶️. Warken, isalee run 4th (kegs family). 3rd kingdom is cutting trade off to 4th to get auren to come out of hiding. Rissa gets stabbed as auren is taken by manu and man from 2nd kingdom. Trading has become difficult with other kingdoms, suffocating supplies. auren meets 2nd kingdoms queen isold who has the power of pain and tries to cleanse auren of her sins. They are religious fanatics preparing for conflux. Slade flies to her. Argo is shot. Kaila manipulated voices to prove she’s guilty. Second kingdom prince shields them from slade when he arrives. Slade made a rip to Annwyn. Only auren can go. Ryatt shows up takes him home. But the rip in drollard deadwell is gone. The people are dead. Argo is alive and healing. Overall this story was slower with more character development and background. Also setting the stage for more to come. But less action. Malia was tricked by the twins who restored the bridge of lemuria to Annwyn.

Gold- auren wakes up with her ribbons in Geisel a city Annwyn where they recognize her as the guilded girl who went missing. (Lyari ulvere Saira) Nenet takes her home. Her son Thursil and his wife and healer Estelia. History: a Turley didn’t want to rule, a carrick sat on the throne. Worst timminor carrick. Spread hate for aurens broke bridge. Land has suffered since. Spreading toward capital. Magic is fading out but they blame it on diluted bloodlines not the broken bridge. Turleys are threats to carricks rule. Now they have stone king. He controls stone. Stone guard. Wick- vulmin dyrunia leader. (Rebels) Turly loyalist. Malina meets king carrick. Slade is on a vengeance tour starting with taking manu. Isold. Red raids. Dew. Captain quarter. Saving aurens horse crisp. Stone swords are on the hunt for auren. Nenet gets stabbed. The author is going to make us sweat it out if they will ever be reunited. Malina escapes 7th with her assassin (Dommik) and sharing a connection. I find this storyline to be annoying and a filler for the time auren and slade are away from one another. Maybe to help Malinas character arc. Auren leaves gisel with wick. Auren meets Emonie (part of rebels). Learn she has glamour magic if she touches someone. Bryol is next stop. She sees it’s been destroyed by king carrick. Side mission to save Oreans with Ludogar and sister Lerana. Malina makes it to Highbell. Kaila is there. She locks Malina up and acts like she’s crazy for warning the fae army is coming. Dommik gets her out. Auren learns about fairy rings. King Thold (1st) shows up to 4th. Malina tries to protect the kingdom with ice magic. Kaila takes the wall down. The fae start coming. Kaila flees Malina fights. Aurens Oreans are the people from drollard. Slades mom. And lord cull has them (slades dad). Argo is back and healed by Shea and Wynn. (Healer). Who then tells slade his black heart doesn’t need healing but she heals Rissa. Kaila shows up to slade and they make a plan to protect orea before slade plans to go over the bridge to Annwyn. Auren fights cull, uses slade’s rot. Wick bleeds gold- he’s a turley. Cull informs her they can see auras because her and Slade are bonded pairs. The group gets away but the fairy ring takes them right to the king. Brennur deceived them.

Goldfinch- aurens memories have been taken by someone named Una and they are trying to brainwash her but she resists. Cull convinces carrick to get emonie to impersonate Auren anyway. The bond snapped into place. Slade produced a shadow dragon. Slade saves 6th kingdom and Malina is thankful. Aurens lost memories are coming back. Slade crosses the bridge into Annwyn. Meets the rebels and learns aurens last name and King Carrick has her. Makes his way to her. Meanwhile battle in 4th and 5th border. Malina completes character arc. Cold queen to caring royal. Slade and Auren reunited (produces a real dragon) at first she doesn’t recognize him. Then does and bond sets in and holy hell 🌶️🌶️🔥🔥🥵🥵. Scale appears on aurens neck. Brennur is the reason auren went to orea via fairy ring instead of dying but for money. Wick blamed himself for her going missing all this time. Orea battle near highbell. All kingdoms banned together (2nds prince sent people. 1st with snakes. Red raids. Kaila). They see the land is full of rot so they know slade has been there. Emonie impersonates stone sword and starts crossing bridge into orea. Culls army (red and black) is burning city where slade and auren are. Carrick erects castle in 7th and resurrects stones to be soldiers for the army. Emonie magic disappears and instead impersonates a twin and plans to kill the king. twin catch her, beat her and leave her. Emonie meets Malina and Dommik tied to a pillar (by the twins) she frees them. Malina runs for the bridge. Ryatt heads to 7th for the next battle. Judd was killed. Fighting stones for soldiers. Ryatt kills carrick. Malina sacrifices herself. Dommik joins. Bridge blows up. Judd’s body is gone. Slade fights dad but he won’t show. His mother is strung up and the dragon is hurt. Mom is stabbed by dad. Dad traps slade and just as dagger about to be in heart, Auren saves him. She dies. Slade kills him. Story of mom saying goldfinch. He walks to orea’s bridge but it isn’t there. They run but they fall into void. Auren speaks to goddesses and says she doesn’t want to go. So don’t. She wakes in Slade's arms but they are falling. Ribbons become wings. Mom says goldfinch and she was healed by a healer. Auren heals Annwyn land from a gift from goddesses. Ryatt flies Argo where the bridge would have been. Doesn’t work. Comes back to see Emonie. Fairy ring. Everyone goes through. Emonie and ryatt have tension 🥵. Digby and slades mom?? Ha

Re-read!
Which tells you the state of the recent reading material out there because I never do rereads!
But

Book 1:
skipped because I fucking hate the Midas and Auren dynamic. Got the audiobook because apparently it supposed to be an amazing ride with the narrators. Still skipped it. Well until the last part when she meets Commander Rip. That’s iconic. Yay!

Book 2:
It’s really something to see Auren find her place in an enemy camp. Find her place with the wrath and starts to want more for herself. Hate that it took another male to make her see that but hey, c’est la vie.

Book3:
Oh god, audiobook book Slade 🤭. Also, skipped all the other side quest characters because I can’t relive the hate I have for Malina and then being forced to change my view of her later on….
My head knows Midas cutting off the ribbons is coming but might skip that too because it’s my damn reread!

I’m a sadist apparently because I read the torture. I read the heartbreak but, I also reread that rise from drugged up fae to gold-wielding goddess. Worth it!

Pause for second half of the series because I have other books to go through.

I chose to review this as a whole vs individually.

This series became one part of my Holy Grail. The first two books, I will admit, were a little slow to get into. JUST HOLD IN THERE. The FMC and the MMC are divine. Slade is everything anyone could ever ask for in a male character. Good looking, strong, dominant, loving, supportive...the list could go on and on. But what makes this series really stand out is the support characters. Not only do you fall for the main characters, but the support characters make this series. You learn to love characters you couldnt stand. You grow with them and feel their heart ache as they aim for redemption. You feel the loss, the love, the genuine connection between everyone as they begin to intertwine.
10/10 and it also has the perfect amount of spice.

I really enjoyed the Plated Prisoner series overall. Raven Kennedy takes the Midas myth and spins it into something darker, more intimate, and surprisingly empowering. Auren’s journey, from a woman literally coated in gold and controlled by a tyrant to someone who reclaims her autonomy, is the strongest part of the series. It’s emotionally engaging, and the world-building around the Kingdom of Orea is vivid enough to keep the pages turning.

That said, the series isn’t perfect. It can feel uneven at times, especially early on, and the pacing gets bogged down with repetition and long stretches of inner monologue. Some of the plot reveals are predictable, and a few characters feel more symbolic than fully fleshed out. But the emotional payoffs are real, the slow-burn romance with Slade delivers, and the character growth, especially for Auren, is genuinely satisfying.

This series starts smaller than it ends. What feels like a contained story at the beginning slowly opens into something much darker and more complex.

At its core, this is a story about control, identity, and what it takes to break free from both. The character growth is where it shines most. Watching that transformation unfold is what carries the series forward.

It leans heavily into emotion and relationships, but underneath that is a constant tension built on power and consequence. Not everything is clean, and not everything is easy, which gives the story weight.

The pacing shifts across the series, but when it hits, it hits hard.

This isn’t just a fantasy about magic or kingdoms. It’s about survival, choice, and becoming something stronger than what tried to define you.

Pros: Interesting story, fun side characters, and loved the world building, like how the kingdoms were easily identifiable based on the cultures and climates.

Cons: Why use 1 word when 8 will do? So much extra to slog through, could have had the exact same story in just 5 books. Maybe even 4 because there was so much repetition. Magic typically has a rule system depending on the world, there were some soft rules in place here but it got convoluted and murky and parts just didn't make sense for already established canon. The best characters were the side characters because the FMC was mostly just weak and frustrating, like thank god her friends and man were interesting.

OVERALL LOVED IT!
At some point throughout the series I felt that it was a little slow/drawn out, but those moments were fleeting because then the next POV would happen and I was right back in it. The characters were all complex, and the plot was a fresh take on an old tale that I was really captivated by. I don’t often find myself just as invested in the side characters as I am the main character but in this series I was! I was emotionally attached to everyone by the time I was done with the last book, and sad my time with them was over. Definitely will be re-reading eventually!

I wasn’t sure at first if this series would be for me but it turned out to be exactly what I needed! I did find the series probably could’ve been compressed into fewer books but was still great nonetheless. The burn was slow but oh so worth it! Slade was everything and more you could want in a shadow daddy. Literally the epitome of ‘would destroy the world for his girl’ and isn’t that exactly what we came for. 👏🏻👏🏻 This series had me smiling, swooning, gasping, crying and 😮‍💨. Would recommend if you’re looking for a completed romantasy series with a top tier shadow daddy.

I really enjoyed this series. I cried for Aurens growth, the things she went through at the hands of men. But by the end I was kind of over the sex. It was all the same. And who has that much sex when you are fighting a war.

Also hated the ending. way to wrap it up way too quickly and do all the characters, except for Auren and Slade dirty. Poor Ryatt. And what's going to happen to Orea with them gone. Also who ends on a sex scene like that? It was unfortunate.

Way to much narrative. I understand when build a world alot of details are expected but this was almost too much. lots of things going on in this series. at one point there were 7 different POV's it got to be chaotic, so much so book 3-5 I did quite a bit of skimming knowing I wouldn't miss anything important. Overall the plot was good

Awesome series with fantastic character arcs, world building, and such a great twist on a classic book I read in high school. I did not give five stars due to how the ending did not feel like an ending. There needs to be another book to really give it a worthy ending for all characters.

Solid Romantasy Series, the smut involves some serious dirty talk. Wasn't the biggest fan of how it was wrapped up to finish, felt like a few things were just kind of forgotten. That said, I read all six books with a month, super easy to read, page turner, moreish.
