Eastshore Isle #6

My Orc in Uniform

Rate this book
I’ve been a single mom for sixteen years, and I know there’s no place left in my life for fun. Right?

I grew up in the South, where there are three things you’re never supposed to A woman her age, a man his salary, and a single mother how the duck she’s managing to juggle a job, a mortgage, and a teenage son who’s suddenly become too big for his britches. I mean, where did my teensy little best bud go? Who is this bro who’s so proud of his fledgling mustache and even fledgling-er biceps?

Hormonal AF.

I realize exactly how much my son has changed when he sets me up with the hottest cop in town. This big city charmer is an incredibly shmexy orc who—for no discernable reason—seems to like me. What in the world could he see in an exhausted, overworked, desperate-to-throw-in-the-towel-and-hide-under-the-covers single mom like me? I’m ready to swear off men entirely, except… Simbel makes me laugh. And somehow, he makes life easier…and more fun.

I guess I'm the one that's hormonal AF.

I’ve spent the last sixteen years protecting my heart and my baby, and “having fun” is what changed my life sixteen years ago. But can I give into the temptation Simbel represents and trust him not to hurt either of us? Or do I stick with my safe, boring…but lonely life?

This feel-good, low-angst, high-heat cozy romance features the following Fated Mates, cinnamon roll cop, a once-burned-twice-shy mama bear, lots of praise (wink), adorable small-town (of course), lots of humor, lots of heat!

When she discovered it was possible to set big, buff, delicious monsters in contemporary cozy small towns, she was sold. And that's how she ended up with a new pen name and a new series.

Welcome to the town of Eastshore Isle, the only beach town on the east coast experiencing negative population growth. You know who's going to help save the town? That's right; super-sexy, laugh-out-loud orcs.

Just like Caroline's HistRomComs, except greener.

My Orc in Uniform by Veronica Kane
Eastshore Isle series #6. Paranormal Orc romance. Can be read as a stand-alone. Alternating first person POV.
Marissa Gray fears her sixteen year old son is being influenced by his friends in delinquent high jinx, since he has no male role model at home. When he walks into the school office after she’s turned down a dinner invitation from Simbel, the school Resource Officer, he complains that she never has any fun anymore. At which point, Simbel reinforces, when a woman says no, that’s it.
Aka, a good influence and role model.
Simbel has been enamored with Rissa since he arrived in Eastshore. Now with her son as a buffer, encouragement, and a bit of distraction, a few dates has them both convinced to spend time together.
Rissa didn’t take the safe route the first time around which left her as a single mother. Can she risk everything again?

Entertaining romance, while also making sure everything is consensual.
Plus I learned how to dig for clams and shuck oysters.

High heat fated mates, low angst, feel-good, small town romance.
Irresistible.

Single mom Marissa is a school admin assistant who’s crushing pretty hard on the school resource officer, a delicious seven feet tall orc.

Simbel was recruited by his friend Sakkara to move to Eastshore Isle where orcs and other creatures are accepted and welcomed. He’s certain Marissa is the one for him, as he’s been attracted to her since the first moment he spotted her. However, concern for her sixteen year old son has kept from dating at all, and it’s going to take some effort to convince Marissa he’s interested in more than a fling.

This was a super cute, spicy novella from the always entertaining Veronika Kane. The integration of Marissa’s son Patrick into Simbel’s plans was really sweet.

I was fortunate to have received an advance reader copy from the author, and I’m pleased to share my honest review.

I want to live in Eastshore Isle. Veronika does an amazing job. I love that we get to visit with the characters from the previous books. In this book we are introduced to Marissa. She had some fun when she was younger and ended up as a single mother. Now her life is focused on her son. When Simbel enters her life, she starts enjoying life again.

I continue to enjoy this series. I have already preordered the next book.

I felt like this one opened in a weird place in the story and it threw me off. There was very little build up, or interaction with the 2 MC's initially, and we learn that there was already a lot of talk and interaction between the community from the newly introduced twins - but we don't see it.
A nice enough addition, and strong mama bear energy.

Not gonna lie, I forgot I was reading this...so I guess that is a statement as to how memorable it was, forgetting I was reading it at 79% finished. Whoops!

Rissa is a single mother to a 16 year old son. In her 30s and working as a school secretary she's convinced herself that she'd be a terrible mother if she took any time for herself, never mind dating! Simbel has had his eye on Rissa for awhile now, but she keeps turning him down...that is, until her son tells her to live a little and helps thrust her his way. Enter the whirlwind romance.

We get a couple of dates and then after maybe, maybe a couple of weeks, these two go out for a romantic date on Rissa's boat, get grounded because they forgot about the tide, bionk IN THE SAND on a beach, get 'rescued' by Riss's son Patrick and friends, then the next morning declare their undying love for each other with Patrick, a 16 year old teenager already calling Simbel Dad...like WTF happened?

I have NEVER met a teenager that can just flip a switch and be like "yeah, that dude's my dad now cause he dated my mother for less than a month, asked me if he could marry her, and then informed her that she is undoubtedly his mate and he is never letting her go." And here I was for the first 85% wondering how the f**k Rissa can afford a nice house WITH A GARAGE AND a nice, seaworthy boat with a dock in the marina. Like, what school does this woman work at that all of this is achievable on a secretaries' pay and how do I work there??? Anyhow, it was pretty good until the magical ready-made family moment.

Spice wise, is was pretty vanilla. The only thing I can think is, beach fun, emergency blanket in the area or no, sounds like a sure fire way to get sand in places it ought not be. Simbel was what I would call a sweet, good-time bro king of guy, and Patrick...is like the best teenage son ever really. Is just sssoooo okay with a guy coming in that he only really knows from a school police officer side of things, whirlwind romancing his mom and then moving in and calling him his son, etc. That kid has to be so laid back. But again it was that what, 5 page, thing that sank the rating for me.

In a cute (and high steam!) return to Eastshore Isle, we have a story about Simbel, one of the twin orcs who is new and finding his place in the small town, and Marissa (or Rissa), a single mom who's centered her life around raising her son. Marissa leads a boring life - her description! - as an administrator at Eastshore's Upper School and mom to Patrick. She secretly yearns for some fun and adventure, and she wouldn't mind involving Simbel, one of Eastshore's newest orc residents and the school's new Resource Officer. Simbel, a charming and easygoing guy, is trying to figure out how to convince Marissa to go out with him because he's convinced she's his Mate. Enter Patrick, Marissa's teenage son who may be falling in with the wrong crowd of friends and with whom Simbel becomes involved as a mentor and role model. Patrick conveniently encourages Marissa and Simbel to spend time with one another and turns out to be more mature and aware than his mom realized.

One aspect of the novella I particularly enjoyed was Simbel's attention to Marissa's boundaries and preferences, and how he addressed consent and its importance with Patrick, which was a beautiful "teachable moment!"

As usual, I look forward to the next installment and getting front row seats to Memnon's story!

Age gap: Marissa is mid to late 30s, Simbel is 36yo (stated that he's been looking out for his twin brother for 36 years). Patrick, Marissa's son, is 16yo.

Tropes: Fated Mates; cinnamon roll hero; single mom; small town; low angst/high steam

SFCP (safe for childless people); main characters do not get pregnant/have a baby. Accessory characters (from previous books) may be talked about being pregnant/having babies.

I received an ARC version of this book in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

Marissa, the female human school administrator lead, has noticed Simbel, the male orc school resource officer lead, but she knows she far too old, boring, and focused on being a parent for anything to exist between the pair of them. Simbel is, however, unreasonably intrigued by Marissa, and her son; his twin thinks she’s his mate.

Marissa is concerned about her teenage son’s potential for petty crime but her son is determined to get his mother to loosen up and enjoy her life and Simbel is part of the plan!

This novella is dual POV, well written, and a sweet and steamy, fast-paced, small town, contemporary fantasy, human/orc, single parent, fated mates story. I adored the genuine engagement with and by Marissa’s son and laughed at his manipulations. I empathised with Marissa’s abandonment concerns and enjoyed her slowly growing confidence in Simbel’s commitment. I enjoyed Simbel’s deliberate respect for Marissa’s concerns and preferences, and the way he explicitly looked to teach her son about boundaries and consent. I enjoyed the building physical intimacy. I enjoyed the active happy ending and I’m waiting on tenterhooks for Simbel’s twin’s story!

I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.

Another fun, quick read in the Eastshore Isle series! While each book in this small-town orc romance series can be read as a standalone with minor spoilers, the main storylines weave together across the series.

In this installment, our human FMC is a school administrator and a single mom in her 30s, raising a teenage son. The cinnamon-roll MMC, introduced in the previous book, is a newly arrived orc police officer working at the school.

With low stakes and cozy vibes, this is a delightful read. The MMC is incredibly sweet, and the family interactions, especially with the teenage son, are both endearing and heartwarming. Of course, the adults also get some alone time, leading to adventurous spicy moments.

This book also sets up the next installment, featuring the MMC’s twin. In the author’s note, she mentions that the books are short and designed to be read as a pair. Book 7, My Orc (Secret) Boss is scheduled for release on Valentine’s Day 2025.

Spice: 4/5

My Enjoyment: 4/5

These stories are always so fun and I enjoy hearing about how all of these new couples come together. The dissonance of the female's past and her lack of knowledge about orc customs elongates the slowish burn of the story (in such a short book).

This was a fun twist as we had a single mother who has spent the last 16 years raising her son on her own. She fears the changes that come with adolescence and coming into older ages and new friends that could lead to a possible negative change in the path. Having had her son young after not the best decisions, she worries of her son having a similar outcome.

Simbel is just the person she needs in her life, even if she can't see it. Simbel is her schools new Orc resource officer and just may be the influence to add fun into her life while also being the positive influence that Patrick needs.

These books progress relationships quickly as they are all short stories, but the ride and appeal of Eastshore Isle is always there.

Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of police officers as MMCs. But we already met Simbel and loved him, so I gave it a shot. He's now the resource officer at the high school, which is so much better.

Rissa is a single mom raising a teenage boy who may or may not be falling into a "bad crowd." She's stressed and working hard to be the best mom, at the expense of her personal life. Honestly, her inner turmoil around whether to be with Simbel or not was one of the most realistic reasons I've read. She's just a mom who is worried that taking any time for herself will be detrimental to her kid. Simbel perfectly steps in and steps up as a father figure. When her son called him dad, I bawled.

SUCH A CUTE BOOK!

This is such a realistic and relatable love story (I mean, aside from Simbel being an orc). Rissa is a middle aged single mom with all the insecurities of a real life adult. She knows that the bouncy hot gym teacher-cheerleading coach probably has some advantage over her and she is so surprised when the hot orc cop likes her instead!

The heartwarming reading in this is as much between male lead and female lead as it is between them both and her teenage son. Loved how this story turned out and cannot wait for the next book in Eastshore Isle!

These three were wonderful! I loved that Patrick was an older kid. You really got to see how Simbel was able to connect with him as he was older and got to have those more adult conversations. And Rissa was such a sweet great character. She had so much growth happen during this story as she worked on gaining confidence and remembering who she wants to be. Simbel was also just the best! So respectful and so amazing for both Patrick and Rissa. Loved it and can’t wait for the next one!

I did receive an ARC and this is my honest opinion.

Love

This was one of the best in the series, and I already can't wait for his brother's story. I'm reeeally hoping it's not the P.E. teacher, but if it is... "Maybe" she'll change for the better. Idk, I've been wanting to read about the other brother since they made their appearance. Something about those grumpy types that become a ball of mush to their mates just... 🥰

I did really like this one, though. I'm always into books with Moms cuz, well I am one, so it's great to resonate with the characters when I can.

Simbel, one of a twin, Is a policeman and an Orc. He finds Rissa, a human, absorbing and is besotted but when he asks her out for a date she shut him down. He respects women so takes her at her word. Rissa realised that her fears are keeping her alone and that she really does like the officer but as a mother, and single parent she has no time for a man in her life, plus she was hurt by her previous relationship. A sexy and lovely uplifting story of when a man knows and his woman just accepts and believe.

As per usual for the Eastshore Isle series, this book was the perfect amount of sweet, swoony, and spicy.

I’m not usually a lover of cop MMCs, but Simbel was charming and respectful to a degree that was so sexy. He definitely wanted Rissa very badly, but he was also super respectful of her boundaries, which was really hot.

I enjoyed that Rissa was a single mom, and to a teenager! When we get single parent romances, I feel the children are usually much younger than a teenager in high school, but I really liked this dynamic. Her son wanted her to find happiness with someone so bad and never felt threatened by someone else having his mother’s attention. I liked this spin on it.

Something that I wasn’t as big of a fan of was I felt there were some off-color jokes and some pigeonholing of certain groups that were supposed to be seen as diversity adds. Perhaps it was just me, but some of the things didn’t sit incredibly well with how I interpreted them. I do not think they were meant in malice, but more came from a place of older thought.

Thank you to Veronika Kane for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.

Another fun, sexy read! Marissa had a fling 16yrs ago, supporting herself and son Patrick. Simbel, is a twin, and new to the island. Both have eyes on each other for different reasons. How does Simbel convince Marissa it's not a fling he wants, especially when he has Patrick's support? The banter is great as always. There is claim digging and oyster shelling(yuck) and whoops, low tide on a island. Love Patrick's rescue.

Reckless Once More

A lovely romance between an Orc and a single parent. After raising her son for 16 years, Rissa had some weird idea that she wasn’t supposed to have wild, reckless fun anymore. But the handsome Orc Resource Officer, Simbel comes along and Rissa relearns what it is like to have fun all while fighting some major insecurities. I loved how patient Simbel was with her and how mature her son was. It was a good story.

Rissa has been a single mom to her son Patrick for the majority of his life. She is used to taking care of things on her own. Simbel is new to the island but believes he has found his mate in Rissa – he just needs to convince her. Rissa has been so focused on Patrick and making sure he doesn’t get hurt by any relationships that she lost herself. Luckily Simbel is there to help her find her way back. A delightful story.

This story is about a single mom named Marissa who has a 16 year old son and who hasn't dated anyone in ages. Marissa is attracted to an Orc named Simbel who is the resource officer for her son's high school. Marissa doesn't think he's interested in her but is surprised when he starts a conversation with her and asks her out. Her son likes Simbel and is happy he asks his mom for a date. This is a heartwarming romance with lots of love to go around for the son, Marissa and Simbel.

This book is absolutely what I needed after I have been reading darker themes. This was a breath of fresh air with the sweet and patient orc, Simble. The way he stepped up and proved to be such an amazing male to not only Rissa but to Patrick (Trick) was perfect! I loved this book. Watching Rissa's character growth and her gaining trust was beautiful.

Simbel and Rissa were super cute together. I liked that he wanted her from the start even though Kelly might have been the traditionally more pretty one. Simbel accepting Patrick as his son and knowing that he was a package deal with Rissa was sweet.
