Six years—that’s how long Chantal Fields has avoided the infuriating single father next door. She and Gene Hiller will never get along, so why bother trying?
He’s her best friend’s older brother—annoying, arrogant, and the pain-in-the-ass rancher who’s driven her crazy for as long as she can remember. But when enemies with a grudge against her cop brother resurface, Gene is her literal last hope of survival.
Gene won’t rest until Chantal is safe and home where she belongs. And the instant she’s ready, he’s going to show her he’s worth any risk.
If the enemies after Charlie Fields’s baby sister don’t take her from Gene first...
Calle Jaye is fun, playful, ironic, professional and sophisticated. She’s super-educated in the field of fiction and would spend most of her time walking around in “Book World” (or”eBook World”).
Does she have slight control freak tendencies? Yep. Why else would she chose to self-publish?
In her day job she gets to read romance novels. In her night job she gets to write them!
Her favorite color is bold purple. She likes rock like Kid Rock, Shinedown, and Nickelback. Add in a bit of Anastacia and Adelle, too.
She collects rocks. Watches crime dramas. Abhors Lifetime Movies and Titanic (especially Leo…) and refuses to read or write about sparkly teen vampires.
She’s married to a cop she strongly suspects is a vampire. They’ve made vampire babies, too.
They live in Indiana with their vampire relatives and their vampire dogs.
Chantal always had a crush on Gene, until she stumbled onto him with the lady he was dating six years earlier and terse words were exchanged. Now, she does her best to avoid him at all costs. When by happenstance Gene is close by when Chantal is in danger, the events of this pull them closer and Gene starts to think differently about his best friend’s sister.
They will need to overcome all dangers in their quest to be together, if Gene can redeem himself and prove he isn’t the man he was six years prior🤔 A good story and I’m excited to see what Chad and Genny are doing🥰
The Risk by Calle J Brookes. (The Hillers of Barratt County Book 1)
Another engaging short story (e-book 178 pages) by Calle J Brookes. The characters in this series are related to characters we have met in previous books in other series such as for example the Masterson County books, the small-town sheriff books, Finley Creek books, etc. One over riding theme in all Calle J Brookes books is the importance of family and that love will triumph over all odds, this is a nice romance story. I was engaged with the characters in this book, but my preference is for romance-suspense type of story line. This can be read as a stand alone book. 3 and half stars.
Calle j. Brookes is the queen of interconnected crossover romantic suspense books! Reading her books is like coming home to family while meeting new friends along the way. This book does just that.
