Once upon a time, Marly Akers had believed that, for better or worse, people made their own luck…
Marly wonders how she could ever have believed it. Jilted and pregnant, she’s come back to Marietta with her tail between her legs, the blow to her ego huge as she begins working at her family’s small newspaper, the Copper Mountain Courier, and sharing a tiny apartment with her disapproving mom.
Things can’t get any worse. Or maybe they can. Drake Everett, who secretly captured her teenaged heart and then publicly trampled on it, decides to make her re-acquaintance. Though Drake isn’t the sharp, funny, cocky, arrogant rich boy of yore. These days he seems sharp, funny… and supportive and decent, and Marly realizes she could fall for him all over again… if she listens to her heart. But what about her reporter’s head, which has sniffed out a story that paints Drake as the sweet talker she’s always known…?
Since the day Harlequin bought her first novel, Kathleen has published more than 30 titles with them- everything from hot, sexy contemporaries to dark, brooding suspense. Read in more than 30 countries and 29 languages, she's a five-time finalist for the prestigious RWA RITA Award, a winner of the Maggie Award, and a three-time finalist for Romantic Times' Reviewer's Choice.
Kathleen comes from a family of writers, poets, and journalists- though she may be the one shameless romantic in the bunch. A true Cancer, she values home and family above everything and wouldn't dream of ditching a single friend, memory, gift, or love letter. Consequently, her office is a mess, full of books, colored cut glass, photo albums, Madame Alexander dolls, and a cockatiel who whistles the theme from "The X Files." She is addicted to Mozart and Elvis, Dancing With the Stars, Dorothy Dunnett novels, and sugar-free Popsicles.
The Substitute Bride by Kathleen O'Brien is the seventh book in the contemporary romance The Great Wedding Giveaway series by various authors. Each book in the series features a different couple in Marietta, MT where there is a contest to win a free wedding. All the books in the series could be read as a standalone although there will be flashes of previous characters in the stories.
In this book Marly Akers has returned to Marietta after her engagement fell apart but now she is pregnant and husbandless which is exactly what her strict mother always feared for her. Taking a job working for the family paper in town, the Copper Mountain Courier, Marly ironically ends up covering the wedding giveaway.
Drake Everett was the cocky high school bad boy that Marly had a crush on ten years ago. The pair had never had a relationship but both had a bit of longing for just that happening so now running into one another again the spark is back. Drake and Marly though each have problems they are carrying with them so the question becomes whether they will be able to see eye to eye and fall in love.
The Substitute Bride is again set in my favorite romantic small town of Marietta where everyone knows everyone and the gossip spreads quick. The story between Marly and Drake had a bit more angst to it then I am normally a fan of but I couldn't help but wish things would work out and Marly get a HEA with her baby on the way. As the couple worked through the angst I got the fun of small town life so in the end I found this one alright overall.
Marly Akers came back to Marietta and is working with her mom at the Copper Mountain Gazette. That is a newspaper that has been in their family for years. Marly came home from her reporter job in a big city because she quit, her fiance found his old girlfriend a week before their wedding, they are no longer together and she is pregnant. Her mother had high hopes for her getting out of this small town, so she wouldn't be stuck like she is. Drake Everitt is a rancher in Marietta to sell his dad's ranch, after he passed away. Drake stopped by to see Marly and realizes he still has feelings for her. She finds that hard to believe. This is a shorter story and does have a little sexual scenes in it. It's a great love story but I was left wanting a better ending. I wanted them married and her baby born. Oh well, I guess we can't have everything
Just slightly more erotic than sweet, this is a book to read when you need a"happy" story that is connected, clearly and obviously, to other happy ending stories. While I'm not sure I would recommend it to my mom, I am sure a few of my friends would love it, and even maybe a couple of my sisters. "The Substitute Bride" is actually about three substitutions in weddings. Each couple has challenges ahead, but for the moment, the emphasis is on getting to "I do". The author has a wonderful grasp of human emotion and the mysterious things that provide the drive for all of us. Above all, in this story, she is doing an examination of the things that drive the relationship between a mother and her daughter. And all the things that these two types of people do to each other in their efforts to define themselves without damaging the image the other has of them. I adored Marley from word one, but I found myself thinking a lot about my mother as I "met" Angelina and got to know her better. I'm pretty sure the author had no intention of causing such introspection when she started to write, but I found myself thinking about the relationship I have with my own mother. The book is part of a series. I highly recommend it, and suspect I feel the same way about the other books in the group.
Not a big fan of the story - guy not only walking away from his pregnant fiance for former bimbo girlfriend but then taking over the wedding to insert the bimbo as the bride. He also wants nothing to do with his child; and Marly just forgives him for it all within a few weeks. Yeah right. And Drake dumps his girlfriend because she went marriage crazy; then she's dating and marrying his ranch manager within a few weeks. Dumb scenarios that no one would be ok with.
I thought the story both moved too quickly, would have appreciated a little more depth to the characters, and was annoying because of how long it took the main characters to clear up the misunderstandings - one conversation would have done it. Still for a freebie it was okay.
I really enjoyed my time reading this ! Probably because I was expecting something a little dumb, but most of the twists were clever, from Marly's relationship to her mother to her fight with Drake regarding Robin. The characters were for the most part lovely (I have a soft spot for Fly I must admit) and even if the ending was obvious for everyone, it was very sweet !

The Substitute Bride is book seven in The Great Wedding Giveaway series and is by Kathleen O’Brien. This is a short book and can be read as a stand alone. I have not read any of the other books in the series.
You know, when I read a book, I rate it on whether I connect emotionally with the characters. I want to be instantly pulled in, not want to put it down. I have to care about what happens to the characters. I want to think about them even when I’m not actually reading. These things are even harder to accomplish with a shorter book. Previous to reading this, I read a fantastic book that I completely fell in love with so it was a hard act to follow but Kathleen O’Brien immediately made me forget about the previous characters. I was completely pulled in at page one, my previous book instantly forgotten. Mission accomplished.
All Marly Akers ever wanted was to be a big time journalist. Her mother, a single parent, owns and runs the small town newspaper in Marietta, Montana, The Copper Mountain Courier. But she pounded it into her daughter’s head her entire life that she had to leave Marietta for a successful career. She wanted everything for her daughter she didn’t get to do herself. So nine years ago, that’s exactly what Marly did. She ended up in San Francisco and had a successful career and a fiancé. Until everything fell apart. Now she is returning home, her life a mess. No more fiancé, no more job. And she is pregnant.
It doesn’t help that the first person Marly sees on her first morning in town is the subject of her teenage fantasies. Her high school crush and fellow high school newspaper co-worker, Drake Everett. Drake was the school jock, rich boy, funny boy. Marly was the nerd. But those differences didn’t stop Marly from daydreaming of Drake. At the end of their senior year, Drake asked Marly on a date, to go to a party with him. And he never showed up. She was stood up.
Drake Everett can’t believe Marly is back in town. So of course, he immediately wants to apologize for what happened all those years ago, to explain. Marly is just as beautiful as he remembers. She never knew the huge crush he had on her in high school. She also never knew what Drake’s life back then was really like. Things he kept carefully hidden. Will she give him a chance to explain? Will she forgive him?
“He might not have laid eyes on her for nine years, but her memory had always lived vividly in his mind.”
All Marly wants to do is find a new job, to get back out of Marietta. What she doesn’t expect is to feel this connection with the now all grown up and very sexy Drake. There is a definite attraction and it is obvious he feels the same way. The first story her mother gives her to cover is the pending Great Wedding Giveaway. When reviewing the tapes for the finalists, Marly discovers something that makes her question the man she was just beginning to have feelings for. Rather than give him a chance to explain, she comes to her own conclusions.
This was such a good book. I fell in love with Marly and Drake right away. These are two people that clearly deserved a second chance at love and they were perfect for each other. I’ve read several books by different authors revolving around Marietta, Montana and I am so smitten with this little town. This is only the second book of Kathleen O’Brien’s that I have ever read but it definitely makes me want to read more.
Marly has quit her job, her fiancee left her for another woman and she's pregnant. All Marly ever wanted was to be a big-time journalist. Her mother, a single parent, owns and runs the small town newspaper in Marietta, Montana, The Copper Mountain Courier and wanted more for Marly than she had. Marly is terrified to disappoint her but returning home is her only option.
Life could not get any worse until her high school crush walks into the newspaper office. Drake was the rich, popular school jock, who stood her up on their one and only date. Drake is anxious to apologise to Marly for his actions and wants to explain the reasons behind it. Still as drawn to Marly as ever, can these two overcome the obstacles in their way?
I wasn't expecting much from this book since it was free but it was actually an entertaining read. The characters are well developed and engaging. It is a quick read but the plot moves at a nice pace. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good romance.
YOU CAN BREAK THOSE HABITUAL SELF HARMING BEHAVIORS
5 STARS given here for this different look at a Substitute Bride given to us by Kathleen O'Brien, our heroine is the one who is being substituted. It is a terrific look at old prejudices controlling life then the realization that these prejudices didn't matter now and for the future setting free a open & loving beautiful relationship between a mother and daughter. Furthermore, it allowed the truth of old beliefs to shine and that light allowed for the healing of others besides our main couple to find love with one another. I really liked the fact now emotions were healed, lives were settled it was the mother who was going to undertake to travel for a job, with her daughter remaining running the family owned paper, it showed that self harming behaviors we have that start out as a walk of self protection, can go to far but happily can be changed. Great romance in they think of the other, first most of the time. WARNING: 18 & up Sexual Content
This is a sweet and short romance based in the charming town of Marietta. It is the third book that I have read in the series, but my first by Kathleen O' Brien and I enjoyed her dual point of view writing style, but I did wish that she separated the different POV's better because she was just switching between characters in the same page without proper separation and this made it very confusing. I liked Drew's character because he was sweet and romantic, but I do not think he was realistic as he fell back in love with her again instantly. Marly's character was strong and independent and I loved how she stood up for herself and her beliefs even when life kept on pushing her down. The chemistry between Drake and Marly was nice, but nothing spectacular. I did feel that the author was rushing the book from the middle and she did not explore the characters more which resulted in a lack of character depth. Overall this is a sweet and short read with a lack of character depth and a rushed story line.
Instead of being married, Marly Ackers is home in Montana while another woman takes her place as The Substitute Bride at her big wedding. She quit her job, was dumped just before her wedding and now is home living with her mother above the Cooper Mountain Courier, the family newspaper.
Drake was a hot guy from high school that Marly that stood her up the night they graduated but she never forgot and neither did he. Now she is home, pregnant with another man's child and Drake is still interested in her.
Marly and Drake had lots of baggage, a funny history and some lack of communication to make the relationship a series of problems to solve. It is set at the time of The Great Wedding Giveaway and Marly is assigned to write the stories covering the event and the semi-finalists in the paper. In the end she becomes The Substitute Bride for Drake and you need to read the story for the humor, fun and crazy characters that help them get to the surprise at the end.
I got it for free at Amazon. The title looked interesting, I read without know the premise (my fault!!). This story sells fantasy. What man willing to pursue pregnant woman? Or it's me that old fashioned and indeed man these days are like this. But it's too much for me to believe. There, she was pregnant, then bam!! Came this georgeous man. Insta lust, weak in the knees. At this point I'm not yet care with her. She was in her weakest point and uh-oh came this knight in shining armor. New man to lust. What about the father of her baby? It seemed too easy to forget one man then move to another. I didn't feel any sadness or anger or whatever feeling after breaking up with a man she was ready to marry, no less. DNF. Sorry.
The storyline is good but it becomes too convoluted with secondary characters that make no sense but one character ‘Fly’ could have been a book on his own in my imagination. However, the author seemed to gloss over him and left the reader hanging. Reading the blurb about Marley and Drake I had such high hopes for this book but it left me sadly disappointed hence the 2 Stars. I believe in the motto ‘one man’s meat is another man’s poison’ therefore read it this could be your filet mignon!
This was a slow starter for me. But I blame that on all the lazily written first person piece of blech I’ve been subjecting myself to lately. This was so insightfully written. What a joy to read. I have a lot of highlights of mostly well crafted sentences. Two people come together after knowing each other across the desk of the high school newspaper. Such well developed characters. My only complaint is that it ended with 70 or so pages left in the book (a full 15%!), which I thought would belong to Drake and Marly. Alas it was an advertisement for the next series installment.
A second chance read. Marly is back home after losing everything. She has no idea what to do next as she is jobless & pregnant. She knows that her mother means well but she wants to be on charge of her life. Drake can't believe that she back and he has to apologize for leaving her hanging all those years ago. But will she forgive him? Marly has always had a thing for Drake but everything is different now do they ever stand a chance at a new beginning? Great characters lovely sitting.
I have enjoyed reading books by Kathleen O'Brien. This one was about a bow a young woman comes home from being out in the world so different than what she grew up in pregnant and dumped by the baby 's father. She becomes reacquainted with a man she went to school with and realizes that she still has feelings for him. The two of them discover that they were meant to be.
Potential but book wasn't well paced. So yeah they loved each other when in high school and just like that sparks fly. This book could have been more but it's like the author was pushing the narrative to make an ideal book. They had a connection but it was thoroughly explored. Just way too short and come on spoiler alert she agrees to marriage finishing a blow the end.
Marley had a accomplished everything she had set out to do. She had gotten a great job at a San Francisco newspaper, become successful, was engaged to be married, and lived in a beautiful apartment. Her wedding was just around the corner when everything fell apart. Now, 9 years later, she was back in copper mountain, something she had never plan to do. Worst of all, she'd let her mother down, the last thing she ever wanted to do.
I obtained this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. Marly has quit her job as a reporter and days from her wedding her fiancé has decided he can't marry her because he is in love with the girl that jumped out of the cake at his bachelor party. Oh and she pregnant too. So what is a girl to do but go back to her roots, Marietta, Montana and figure out what is next.
She comes home pregnant and jilted. Marly comes him from San Francisco and her ex fiancée decides he wants to marry someone else. Drake ius the hometown guy who liked her in high school may have a second chance.
Most of this is 5-star quality, but I was turned off by the ending. Good characters, interesting storyline, but what was a sweet romance most of the way through suddenly turned rather yuckily graphic at the end. Too bad.
The story line was ok but felt rushed at times. The transitions between the two main characters points of view was not at all smooth. You would end one paragraph as one and suddenly be the other character in the next without any rhyme or reason
This is a nice quick read but, even though it’s quick read, very well written. The story line is captivating from beginning to end! A story of betrayal, hope and love! I recommend this book!
The one high school crush that turns out to break free from your dreams and come to life. Who has not been a little crazy, unsure, and coping with family disasters. To come out on top with love and renewed strength of the love of your life.
This was a pretty good romance that started years ago in high school. Now nine years later she's home and remembering how much she really did like him. Many not so surprising happings change her life.
There was some editing errors, specifically one page you were with her then it was his perspective in the next paragraph with no break in the page. Overall the book is o.k.
