Halfway Broken #2

Edge of Unbroken

Rate this book
An emotionally devastating love story full of love, trauma, heartache, and healing. Edge of Unbroken is the second book in the Halfway Broken series.

Everyone always says that to heal, you have to let go of the past. But how can you let go of the past when the past won’t let go of you?

In the wake of devastating trauma, Ronan finds himself desperate to find peace yet struggling to see the light. Now living on his grandparents’ ranch in the serene mountains of Montana, he learns that healing is neither easy nor linear.

Meanwhile, Cat moves through her days in New York, where the echoes of her own trauma loom large. As she strives to reclaim her life and navigate the deep ache of missing Ronan, the presence of an unrelenting threat from her past casts a shadow over her enduring hope.

Separated by distance, yet bound by their fierce love for each other, Ronan and Cat cling to the fragile thread of their connection, learning that love can be both a refuge and a battlefield as they fight not just for each other, but for the chance to become unbroken

But the past has a way of encroaching on the present in more ways than one, testing their bond and their resilience while forcing them to confront the demons that refuse to let them go.

Can love truly conquer the darkness? Or will the weight of their histories keep them trapped in a cycle of pain?

This book definitely brought me to the EDGE of being broken. This series is one of my favorites. There were many times in this series that I laughed, gasped, screamed, wanted to throw things, and brought me to tears. To say I love Ran, would be an understatement. His instinctual goodness is one that is unmatched. I am so excited and blessed to have had an ARC of The Edge of Unbroken because I simply missed these characters.

The MMC and FMC both go through trials and struggles in this book, but one thing that J.V. Reese does well in this book is help keep us connected to our supporting characters. She makes us love them just as much.

HOWEVER, The crown jewel in this book, is the last 100 pages. It really took this book over the top for me, in the best way possible. I won’t spoil anything, but to say I was invested was an understatement. My husband couldn’t pry this book from my hands. 🤣

A truly incredible second installment, well done J.V. Reese.

LOVED IT! I applied to be apart of the ARC team, and was honored when I was accepted. I loved the first book in the series, so I knew I was in for a treat when the second book arrived in my inbox. I once again fell in love with all of characters, especially Cat & Ronan. Their love story, and life experiences, pulled at my heartstrings.

A SEAMLESS sequel to Cat and Ran’s story!! Goodness. This book was TOUGH. The themes mentioned are dark and sad, but the love between these two kiddos is like a sunrise, full of hope and light!!! J. V. has created a found- family trauma romance that completely captivates you! I FLEW through this story (and she’s a thick one!)

I found myself wanting to know every bit and piece of each character! Their depth, and complexity while also remaining “confused teenagers” is so so REAL!!! They make dumb decisions, they participate in some risky behavior, but in the end, they have each other to fall back on in such a supportive way!!! I LOVE THIS FRIEND GROUP!!

Now, without spoilers, this story follows the abuse that Ronan suffered his entire life. Rather than the abuse itself (book 1), we learn what is to come of his abuser, and what is to come of him. There are some very dark descriptions that can be triggering. Be cautious when picking this up!!! My heart dropped at some of the scenes!! In addition to the darkness, there is also a lot of focus on healing and the support of friends and family!!! I JUST WANNA GIVE RAN A HUG!!! GAHHHH!

This is the perfect book for anyone wanting a coming of age, trauma-based, romance! You will find yourself rooting for Cat & Ran while falling in love with every character (except maybe 2….because they’re the worst!!!)

I’m so excited to continue this series and can’t wait to see what J. V. does next!!!

Content Warnings: physical abuse, emotional abuse, sextortion, violence, drinking and partying, strong language including frequent use of the f-word, explicit sexual material

Heartbreaking and beautiful. So much angst and pain, yet so much relief, joy, and reception... JV knocked it out of the park. I was so honored to received an ARC, and this hard copy had more page flags and highlighted spots than any other book I’ve read. Gahhhhhhh. I need to Cat and Ran!!!

I believe I have recommended a total of three books to people. It wasn't because I didn't enjoy the story or think that someone else would. It was more because there wasn't a huge wow factor for me. Nothing to say "you must read this book, now!" Now, I can add Edge of Unbroken (read book 1 first) to that list. I stumbled on to Tiny Fractures on a Facebook post. I brought it and read it in two days. Then began the wait for book 2. I was a little worried it would not be as amazing as the first one, but boy was I wrong!
I don't even know where to begin to describe how amazing this story was. I could not wait to find out what was ahead for Cat, Ronan, and friends. The love story felt so real and I continued to root for Ran and Cat to find their way back to each other. I may have said a few swear words about some minor characters trying to come between their love!
I cried with Cat when her ex continued to harass her, while she did everything she could to keep him at bay. I loved how the friend group rallied around her regarding the shared photos. I admit I was not fond of her ex's outcome. I wanted him to pay for what he did.
I am far from being a teen, but I found myself day dreaming of Ronan. How sweet and caring and loving he was to everyone. How hard it was for him to hide his situation and the toll it took on him. I cried with him and screamed at anyone who tried to get in his way.
I liked everyone in the friend group, but loved Shane the most. You really could see how much he cared for his bestfriend and how guilty he felt about everything. I would love a book all dedicated to Shane (and one on Steve), but first I need more Cat and Ronan.
This was an amazing sequel and I could not put it down. However, the last 100ish pages really had my heart in my throat. I could feel each and every emotion from Ronan as he testified against his abuser. I wanted to reach into the book and hug him tightly and then go slap his mother! I was a little annoyed with Ronan and Steve's father. His situation seemed like once again he was concerned all about himself and not his two sons. Maybe, that will come up in book 3???

This book seamlessly picks up where Tiny Fractures left off, and it's truly uplifting to see Ronan and Cat courageously heal from the traumatic events in the first book and this one. Cat made some not so smart decisions due to the harassment she endured that she had to face, while Ronan had to learn ways to cope with the trauma and mental health problems left behind from his mom. Witnessing their resilience is truly inspiring. The last chapters, which meticulously recount Ronan’s trauma, are emotionally charged, yet profoundly moving. The ending is absolutely phenomenal, leaving me with a sense of hope and renewal, while also leaving room for their story to continue unfolding in the future. I hope I am able to see what is in store for them next.

Second book to tiny fractures , edge of unbroken.
Well the second book was anther roller coaster of emotions & secrets & trauma , past and present. I enjoyed how we got to know each character cat & Ronan past & how it effects each them in different aspects of their lives. How cat & ronan no matter how far apart they were they still remained in love with each other. Even when cat keep doubting her self worth and love for ronan and how her ex was so adamant on extorting cat & trying to keep that control and power over cat. Even after all they abuse and manipulation & coercing cats ex did her. Ronan still loved her & knew that their love & bond they have made over 8 months not been together so Ronan can heal psychically and emotionally from the trauma he suffered from his mother from young age. Cat & Ronan love was truely special, Ronan also thought he never deserved the love and compassion & support cat & his friends gave him as his mother who emotionally and physically abused him was conditioned into him. He had to unlearn so much emotionally trauma. The story line continued with cat & Ronan after Ronan was nearly killed by his mother who has been charged. Ronan has to testify in front of his mother which will bring up all his past and present trauma & abuse emotionally and physically, which will test Ronan’s emotional state & his mental state. Ronan’s friends and family & girlfriend cat all there to help support Ronan best they could. even seen some of the abuse he suffered from at the hands of his mother. This story had me crying & laughing & all other emotions it shows that no matter how much shit you go through in life theirs always light at the end of the tunnel. Ronan and cat have gone through so much different types trauma & emotions & psychological trauma. At the end they always made sure both were safe & always loved. They never pushed each other but always kept each other’s back. I love Ronan cats story and can’t wait to read what’s going happen next.

Wow, where do I even begin?! I’ve been completely captivated by Cat and Ran from the very first page of Tiny Fractures! ❤️

These two have faced unimaginable challenges, and their spirits have been deeply shattered and battered. But despite everything, they push forward, helping each other heal in the most beautiful and powerful way possible.

If you're someone who loves an emotional rollercoaster, this book is *definitely* for you! You’ll feel everything—joy, excitement, love, and spice, but also gut-wrenching heartaches, stress, sympathy, and pain. And somehow, it’s all presented in the most compelling and unforgettable way.

J.V. Reese does an incredible job of capturing the darkest, most intense moments of this story, only to lift you up with lighthearted, fun, and playful moments that leave you begging for more.

I’m beyond thankful to be a part of this author’s ARC team, and I cannot wait to see what’s coming next!

Ooofff where to start. This book takes you through a journey in the best way possible. It will break your heart and captivate you.

The entire time reading this book it felt like watching a moving. I’m manifesting that this book one day becomes a movie or TV series because it would be so binge worthy

It was incredible to dive deep into Ronans past and watch his friend show him what unconditional love could look like.

Warning you this book brought out some big reactions and strong feelings against some characters that makes you hooked that much more. Highly recommend this series if you are into an incredible storyline

This is the second book in a trilogy that I have to say this is probably the best two books I have ever read. This one was written so painfully beautiful it will stay with you a long time. In all the books I have read you will truly keep your hopes up the two main characters will get a happily ever after. These two have gone through so much at a young age. I would give this new author a thousand stars if I could. If your looking for a page turner this is for you.

Cat and Ronan’s story in this second book was on another level! I won’t give any spoilers but damn that was one heck of a rollercoaster. I laughed, I cried, and cheered on this incredible couple as they both have hard and scary situations to navigate. I was so proud of both of them at the end. JV Reese really knows how to get your attention and steadily hold it until the very last sentence! She’s a solid author with each book. I’m so glad I found her work.

I devoured this book in less than 24 hours! I enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed the first book but I’m not gonna lie, this was a painful read. Oh man.

I just have to say that I hated the moments between Ran & Randi. I mean they didn’t do anything wrong but it just feels wrong somehow.

The growth from Ran & Cat is truly amazing. It is actually great to see that they all have each others back. The last few chapters are hard for me to continue reading because it was just too painful. I’m just happy that they both somehow found closure.

I’m gonna say this again, my heart truly aches for everyone who suffered or still suffering abuse (physically, emotionally, sexually) I can’t fathom to imagine how they live with the pain everyday.

Now, I’m just excited to see what happens with the rest of the group. Excited to see their new milestone in life. Hoping to see a less complicated life for these characters. I just want them happy. And I feel like they are MY found family 😂

Lastly, thank you for this ARC 🫶🏼

This was just as heart breakingly beautiful as book one. I swear my heart was fully in this book the entire time. Emotions were much higher in this one, there were less peaceful moments since it was a continuation of the first book. The character development was next level and you really get into the kinds of each one. Easily one of my favorite duos and I will be recommending these books to anyone that will listen.

Happy Release day, I am so happy I was able to read the second book.

The second book of the series, I can't put into words on how Cat and Ronan are just perfect, again I am so happy on what happened to Adam ;& I hope it was painful. I understand with Ronan mother. Their friends group is still the best group ever. I am happy that for once Cat stood her ground when that creep went into the bathroom with her. Idiot!

Their love story is still heartbreaking, Healing , Standing Ground, Faith, Friendship, unconditional love, Justice, therapy. This book will break your heart ;& heal it at the same time.

Cat and Roana deserve the best in life ;& I am so looking forward on walking with them in the future.

I highly recommend this book and Tiny Fractures, even though the book is set has Young Adult! It's a lot more than a Young Adult should bare , let alone ! You will feel hatred and yet unconditional love for Ronan.

I received this as an arc.
**Please like in book one please check your triggers. There are things in this story that may or may not be suitable for some**

With not having read the first book I set this one aside and read the beginning of Ronan and Cat's story. That was intense and after I read the first book I needed to take a hot minute to be able to jump into Edge of the Unbroken. The first book brought some of my own life experiences back to the surface when they had been pushed out of sight and out of mind.

The writing of this story both Tiny Fractures and Edge of the Unbroken were written so well. The details and emotion that J.V. puts into this story and I am sure all of her stories is so devastating and empowering all at the same time. You could be reading and in one sentence feel utter devastation about what is and was happening to Ran, then in the next sentence be empowered but the love and devotion he has for Cat. Following all the friends in their journey of healing of not only Ran's healing but of their own. From Cat and her situation with Adam( NGL I am so glad Karma played a roll in this story). To Steve and Vada, Summer and Zach, and lastly Shane and Tori. Shane being his best friend and him feeling guilty he had no idea what was going on.
Steve his brother and Frank his father having to go through what they did to understand the depth of Ronan's pain and suffering.
As the court date came closer in the book I knew where the author was leading us to. The part where Ran was going to have to speak in front of his mother. I cried. Truly cried at all the details of every situation that Ran had to relive. Mine and my partners story never had to be put to court but knowing some of the things that Ronan went through in this story just made me connect to these characters even more.

I look forward to reading more of her work.

Thank you J.V. Reese for writing such an amazing and tragic story something I never would have reach me to my core. Not only in revisiting some traumatizing things in my past but all while reading this story healing some of those parts of my own story. Something I never knew I needed.

This is a book I could not put down. I was glad that there was a second book so we could follow Ronan's story. I did feel his recovery was authentically portrayed although the recovery time would have taken longer. Especially since his trauma started so early. I really like all of the characters and the bond they all have. I have an issue with Ronan's father. His lack of any knowledge what his son experienced over the years seems somewhat unrealistic.

I especially enjoyed Ronans grandparents and how they handled caring for him . I thought the amount of pages dedicated was great and really painted a picture of Ronan's frame of mind when he arrived and through the first several months.

I highly recommend this book I was sad the book ended because I loved the characters. Tiny Fractures must be read first.

If you're into friends to lovers, a protective MMC and trauma, this series is for you. This book gave me all the feelings the first book gave me, sadness, anger, hope but this one gave me more anxiety. All the secrets that are waiting to be told, whether we want them to or not. The sadness and fear that comes over you from having to relive the actions of some characters from the first book. Wondering whether our MMC, Ronan and our FMC, Cat will survive the ups and downs of their relationship. This is how excellently written this book is, you feel like you’re there, going through it with the book’s characters. I am amazed at how delicate this book was when it came to discussing the importance of mental health as well. J.V. Reese is on my top author’s list, and I cannot wait till the third book is ready because I want to continue Ronans and Cats story already.

I was not prepared for the feelings to be just as strong in this book as they were in the first! J.V. Reese did such an incredible job not only continuing the story, but delving deeper and developing not only the main characters stories but the supporting characters as well. I can’t tell you how many bonfires I feel like I was part of, because the characters transcended the pages and found their way into my heart and my mind!
I won’t spoil anything, but if you liked the first book you’ll love the second!!

It was an absolutely great sequel to pick up where Ronan and Cat's story left off. It does still have heavy and dark topics, so check your triggers before starting.

It is quite the emotional roller-coaster! Seeing what both characters had to endure while still loving each other is so heartwarming.

I was so happy to be selected as an ARC reader 🫶

I was waiting impatiently for the continuation of Cat and Ronans story from Tiny Fractures and it did not disappoint! If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. I love these characters and their love and growth.

Highly anticipated and exceeded expectations! I would give this 5million stars if i could.

The characters are just so incredibly relatable and it feels like I'm right in the story with them. I felt the tension and the stress, as well as the joy and relief. I laughed, I definitely cried, and I honestly had a few revelations about my own trauma. There is just so much emotion bleeding off the pages and it's clear just how much love and attention went in to crafting these characters and their story. I wish I could be a part of this best friend group and give them all hugs... and maybe party with them on the beach lol

Getting to the end and reading that this is not the end of Ran and Cat's story... I'm sorry WHAT?! Give me more and give it to me now, please.

5 stars! This second installment in the series delves even deeper into profound themes such as trauma, abuse, and emotional and physical struggles. I strongly advise checking the trigger warnings before diving in, as the subject matter is intense.

JVReese crafts a beautiful narrative that truly immerses you in the heart and soul of the characters, especially Ronan. The raw connections and emotional depth are so palpable that I found myself in tears multiple times, feeling his pain and torment deeply. While this book primarily focuses on Ran and Cat's journey, the supporting characters and their interactions are equally compelling, making you care for each one. I'm rooting for a happy ending for all the characters and hoping Shane and Steve get their own stories someday.

My only critique is that the pacing at the beginning felt a bit sluggish, with moments where certain scenes and dialogue repeated. However, this didn’t last long, and it certainly didn’t lessen my obsession with the story; I was fully captivated by each chapter. The dual POVs flowed seamlessly, adding richness to the narrative.

While the Randi/Ran storyline was essential to Ronan's journey, I found myself anxious during their interactions, sensing an impending twist. Each chapter had me holding my breath. The author brilliantly creates an atmosphere of looming doom that kept me glued to the pages (and thank goodness Ronan remains just as endearing as I hoped!).

I must admit, as much as I adore Cat, there were moments when I wished I could shake some sense into her. It's vital to remember these characters are just high school kids, grappling with the weight of expectations thrust upon them. I cherished her growth and the journey of her finding her voice!

The trial—wow! I’ll need time to process those chapters. I wasn’t prepared for the flood of emotions surrounding that traumatic event, and it left me grappling with the reality of a world that can produce such monsters. Yet, through it all, my love for Ronan only grew as he confronted real demons and continued to aspire to bring joy and love to those around him!

The conclusion isn’t exactly a cliffhanger, but the emotionally intense last line had me holding my breath. I am anxiously awaiting the next book and the continuation of these unforgettable characters’ journeys.

J.V. Reese has done it again! Edge of Unbroken, the breathtaking sequel in this incredible series, took my heart, shattered it into pieces, and then slowly, beautifully put it back together. This book is an emotional masterpiece, delving deep into the aftermath of trauma and the resilience of love.

Ronan and Cat’s journey is raw, real, and utterly captivating. With Ronan sent to Montana to heal from his past, and Cat left behind in New York to wrestle with her own demons, their long-distance relationship is a test of love, patience, and self-discovery. Cat’s choices aren’t always perfect, but her growth throughout the novel is astounding, making her one of the most complex and relatable characters I’ve ever read. And Ronan—oh, Ronan—his quiet strength and vulnerability made me love him even more.

The final 100 pages had me in tears, completely consumed by the intensity of their emotions. Their reunion? Absolutely breathtaking. J.V. knows exactly how to balance heartbreak with hope, pain with healing, and longing with the promise of something greater. And while this book provides closure, there’s just enough tension left that I'm desperate for the third book.

J.V. Reese has cemented herself as my favorite indie author. Edge of Unbroken is even more powerful, more heart-wrenching, and more unforgettable than the first book. If you love deeply emotional stories with stunning writing and characters that stay with you long after you turn the last page, this is a must-read.

Bravo, J.V. Reese! I’m already counting down the days until the next installment. ❤️

To go back and time and find a friend group like the one Cat and Ran have would be incredible, how many people are lucky enough to find that in high school?! After reading Tiny Fractures, I’ve been impatiently awaiting book 2 and it DID NOT disappoint, I actually think in many aspects I liked it more!

While Ran is away getting the help he needs to heal both physically and emotionally the gangs looking out for Cat and keeping her safe, this just further proves my point at how amazing this group is (I’d love to go camping with them or party at the beach house) 😍

The trauma that both main characters have endured was written about as beautifully as it could be and each ‘event’ was wrapped up at just the right moments, J.V. never dragging it out. In real life we often see and experience second hand trauma and I am impressed at how well written it was for our supporting characters and furthering their developments …. and maybe future story lines?! Pleasssseeeee 🤩

By the time I got to April 18th, I’d already cried and put myself back together again at least 5 times and had to force myself to stop reading (at 3am) to give those last few chapters the attention they deserved; as hard as it was, so worth it. ❤️‍🩹

This book will make you cry, swoon and wish to redo your high school years for just a moment to hang with this crew (even on their bad days). One of the easiest 5 stars I’ve given and I can’t wait to see what else this author give us 🫶🏻

To say I couldn’t put this book down would be an understatement. After reading the first installment, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to dive into this sequel, and it absolutely did not disappoint. I experienced a whirlwind of emotions—sadness, anger, shock, and laughter—making the reading experience truly brilliant!
One of the most poignant aspects of this story is how the characters navigate their healing from trauma. They carry the weight of their past experiences As they confront their fears and vulnerabilities, the journey of healing unfolds beautifully throughout the narrative. Despite the challenges they face, each character embarks on a path toward understanding and resilience, demonstrating the strength it takes to move forward.
The final portion of the book was particularly heart-wrenching in many ways, yet it served an essential purpose for the overall storyline. It provided vital context that allowed us to witness the growth and development of the relationships and characters, especially the enchanting dynamic between Cat and Ran. Their journey, amid their healing process, was nothing short of magical, adding depth and richness to the narrative. Overall, this continuation beautifully captured the struggles and triumphs of its characters, leaving a lasting impact on readers.

I might be in the minority here, but I really have a soft spot for Randi. Her backstory is heart wrenching and I can totally see why Ronan has so much love for her.

But back to the review: this book is as incredible (if not more so) than Tiny Fractures, which already shattered my heart. That cliff hanger was a doozy and I’m glad we get a little (a lot?) of closure with this book. It was an emotional rollercoaster for sure: all that pain, the trauma. Ronan coming out of that darkness was so relatable. That depression exhaustion! Oh my word! I almost felt it reading through it. That sludge. I love his progression, the one step forward, two steps back. And all the things he has to overcome in the meantime. And that trial at the end… Absolutely insane. So much emotion.

And oh my gosh, Cat! Some of the things she does, I want to scream at her. It’s good to remember that she is still fairly young and under a lot of her own stress and healing from her own trauma. I have to admit that I was satisfied with how it ended for Adam though.

I am in love with the friends group. Found family has always been one of my favorite tropes and this book does not disappoint in that department. Shane? Panty dropping! I’ll need a whole separate book for that Irish stud!

I am eagerly awaiting book 3. My head is going wild with theories.
