Through this secondary world Tolkien writes perceptively of universal human concerns – love and loss, courage and betrayal, humility and pride – giving his books a wide and enduring appeal.
Tolkien was an accomplished amateur artist who painted for pleasure and relaxation. He excelled at landscapes and often drew inspiration from his own stories. He illustrated many scenes from The Silmarillion, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, sometimes drawing or painting as he was writing in order to visualize the imagined scene more clearly.
Tolkien was a professor at the Universities of Leeds and Oxford for almost forty years, teaching Old and Middle English, as well as Old Norse and Gothic. His illuminating lectures on works such as the Old English epic poem, Beowulf, illustrate his deep knowledge of ancient languages and at the same time provide new insights into peoples and legends from a remote past.
Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1892 to English parents. He came to England aged three and was brought up in and around Birmingham. He graduated from the University of Oxford in 1915 and saw active service in France during the First World War before being invalided home. After the war he pursued an academic career teaching Old and Middle English. Alongside his professional work, he invented his own languages and began to create what he called a mythology for England; it was this ‘legendarium’ that he would work on throughout his life. But his literary work did not start and end with Middle-earth, he also wrote poetry, children’s stories and fairy tales for adults. He died in 1973 and is buried in Oxford where he spent most of his adult life.

No sé si alguna vez volveré a vivir una historia como esta. El Señor de los Anillos no fue solo una lectura: fue una experiencia transformadora. Me perdí en la Tierra Media como quien se pierde en un sueño al que no quiere despertar. Y lo que más me sorprende es que, por más veces que vuelva, siempre descubro algo nuevo, siempre siento que estoy regresando a un lugar que de algún modo me pertenece.
Tolkien no solo escribió una historia épica. Construyó un mundo entero. Uno donde las montañas tienen nombres antiguos, los árboles hablan, y los pueblos cantan con lenguas que él mismo creó. Cada rincón de su universo está vivo, cargado de historia, de mitología, de poesía. Sentí que podía tocar Rohan, oler las hojas de Lothlórien, y escuchar los ecos de las canciones élficas flotando en el viento.
La Comunidad del Anillo fue como abrir una puerta a lo desconocido. Las Dos Torres me hizo sentir el peso de la lucha, la separación, la oscuridad. Y El Retorno del Rey... oh, *El Retorno del Rey me rompió y me sanó al mismo tiempo. Lloré, vibré, sentí orgullo y desgarro, porque al final de ese viaje, algo en mí había cambiado para siempre.
Me enamoré de Frodo y de Sam, de su sencillez y su coraje. Admiré a Gandalf, con su luz sabia. Y caminé junto a Éowyn, una mujer que me hizo sentir valiente, como si también yo pudiera cabalgar hacia la batalla con el corazón en llamas. Cada personaje fue más que un héroe: fueron mis amigos, mis compañeros, mis espejos.
Y, sí... todavía me duele pensar en Bárbol, en los ents, y esa pregunta que quedó flotando como una brisa triste: ¿encontraron alguna vez a las mujeres ents? Nunca lo sabremos. Pero esa es la magia de Tolkien: deja espacios vacíos que el alma del lector llena con esperanza, nostalgia o simplemente amor.
Esta saga no es solo un clásico. Es un hogar. Uno al que siempre podré volver, aunque solo sea cerrando los ojos.

No puedo traerme a terminar esta historia. Para mí, no es emocionante ni entretenido. Sentía que había que leer esta trilogía completa, porque tiene fama de ser imprescindible en el género fantasía. Aún así, leer esto se siente como una tarea y mi vida sigue bien sin leerlo.
Seguro que está bien, porque ha influenciado a tanta gente. Pero no voy a ser uno de ellos.
