I gave this book four stars because it is very good at what it intends to do - offer a detailed history of the building and running of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, begun in 1828, completed in 1850, and all but dormant by 1900. This is not something that you are going to just sit down and read for pleasure. I read it primarily for research purposes. It is filled with a lot of financial data on the operation of the canal and the political wrangling.
