This book drew me in rather quickly. I loved the coming of age aspect but also the development of family, especially the dynamics of adoption. There’s a lot to like in this first novel and I am really looking forward to the next installment.
Re-readability: yes - in fact I’d also share it with my teenage sons.
Writing: Scott just draws you in. It’s not overly technically and not basic, it’s just simply polished.
Characters: Valin/Corvus is clearly developed very well. I love his relationship with his adopted sister and brothers. Not all characters are perfect and fleshed out but I enjoyed getting to know them.
Plot: it’s a mystery and revenge plot that really moved along in different directions since the characters are discovering more and more, making the plot exciting.
Themes: growing up and coming of age and maturity, justice and revenge, spirit of family and adoption, and nuanced moral dilemmas.

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. Everything changes in one single moment for Valin Orion, as being the son of a prominent family within the vast universe has given him the life anyone could wish for; until it all broke apart by a violent group that claimed all he loves... and even his own freedom. Now a slave to powerful group of corsairs and re- branded with a new name of Corvus, Vain despite now being in a lower rung of society discovers something of family among those had hold his freedom and even among fellow slaves and he finds a new voice as powerful as the weapons Valin is taught to wield. With the aid of fellow fighters, the hunt is on to reclaim what some asshole believed they could steel. Valin is just getting started.
Jump start the new year with this epically wild adventure.
Best first of series I've read in a long time! Action packed and following Valin from age 6 to age 20, this story would make a great movie. Sort of Indiana Jones excitement all through. I liked all the characters, except the ones you weren't meant to like. They were well "fleshed out" and very believable. I especially liked Meeka, the skycat. Sort of a cat/fairy type animal, and how much Valin loved her and cared for her. Gotta love a guy who loves cats! This is obviously, a space drama, so if you aren't into that, don't bother. Follow a long on Valin's trip through a rough at times, life on a couple planets as he tries to avenge his parents and right a lot of wrongs. He retains his morality through it all. I just hope the sequels are as good as #1!
Jasper T. Scott, you surprised me. Starting right from the beginning with the main protagonist at being just a young lad. Then we get to see him a few times before he grows into his adult self. I loved this. Watching Valin change to Corvus and grow and become a leader as he prepares for retribution against those that killed his natural family, along with his adoptive family. And who to trust is hard. Who has been turned to work with the enemy. The better question is, who is the enemy? Jasper T. Scott has another hit on his hands, for sure. I enjoyed this book and can't wait for the sequel.
Once more, Mr Scott has provided us with an incredibly fun and entertaining read. I have read all his series, and everything he touches turns to gold. The most recent addition to his catalogue of works follows a familiar theme. Likable characters, some noble and others ignoble, intrigue, and a healthy dose of good old sci-fi with new tech and universal mysteries. I was engaged the entire book, ignoring most everything else to get to the end. I’m delighted to know that I won’t have to wait long for the next installment. Keep up the awesome work, Mr Scott! (Or should I say King Midas)
If what you’re looking for is constant action and tension, this may be your book. Corvus has two families shot out from under him, gets abducted by voidwraiths, has girls falling all over him, and suffers resentment and betrayal from those closest to him. If you don’t mind a few minor plot holes, all of that is fine.
However, be warned that the story does not end. AUTHORS: a novel is supposed to have a beginning, a middle, AND AN END. A series is supposed to have separate novels, each of which resolves the tensions of that novel. This one does not. It ends in mid-action without resolving ANY of the conflicts introduced.
Thanks for the ARC copy this is an honest review of course. How I've missed Jasper's writing. After taking some time off from releases JTS has made a comeback with this absolute blinder and the start of a new series. Twists and turns following the story of a boy turned man on a quest for revenge for his family (families) Cannot wait for the next part and looking forward to a year of new books from one of my fave authors. Love Meeka that carnivorous sort of flying cat!! All the characters are likeable as well.
The story arc is about growing up, relationships, character development amidst the background of science fiction outer space. Starts briefly as a fairytale but goes horribly bad amidst politics, greed and self-indulgent violence. Secrets crop up throughout that bring in suspicions of betrayals and conspiracies. A very action packed story. The writing is clear, concise and compelling.
It’s been too long since we got a new Jasper Scott book, especially a space epic. Corvus is a great character, in a complex universe. Solid worldbuilding – the level of detail really solidifies the sides, lives, and cultures of the various factions (being a corsair sounds cool but doesn’t provide a long lifespan). The plot was initially unclear (why were these events happening?) but Jasper pulls the goals and character arcs together within the first hundred pages. Fast-paced and engaging.
Star Empire is an action packed space opera with an amazing plot! There are many twists to keep the reader engaged for hours. The characters are realistic and well developed. The details of the worlds and minor characters are wonderfully laid out. I highly recommend it as well as all of the very talented Jasper T. Scott!
Disclaimer: I received this ARC from the author and this is my honest and freely given opinion.
There are two major groupings in this series. There are the planetary empires of the Sovereigns who rule their empire s by guile and slavery. The other group is made up by Cosairs who are the pirates of the outer Galaxy and their own solar systems
Every one is looking for ways to expand their control over planetary systems and resources. They are constantly looking for ways to take control of each other.
I bought this book on sale for a weekend trip. The description reminded me of Dune, so I expected a copycat. But the similarities are superficial. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by a swashbuckling sci-fi/fantasy drama of warring factions, betrayal, and subterfuge. This is the first in a series, and I look forward to the next book.
Valin must save the princess from an evil terror, voidwraiths or is it just a game that kids play. Jasper sends on a journey of betrayal waiting at every corner, where the protagonist must change identities to stay alive and is inadvertently saving a princess but from who.
Book 1 had errors throughout and was a meh read. The plot was a bit predictable, and the characters were not as likeable as I thought they would be. There is a lot of running around and blaming in the book. they are young, naive, and annoying in how they go about solving their problems.
Valin being born into an important family, enjoys life to its fullest. Then chaos arises and takes away all he has known. Will he be able to fight to get his life back. Won’t disappoint, don’t miss out.
Jasper T Scott writes another fantastic book! Lots of twists and turns. He brings everything together in the last chapter! But the ending stops at a point WHERE YOU MUST BUY THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES!! THANK YOU
Absolutely brilliant sci-fi fantasy fiction. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of action. Bad guys? Good guys? Who is which? I look forward to the next one.
The intrigue kept me on my seat as I continued reading. The characters are on the beam, when it comes to solving the mystery. Throughout wondering who to trust. Enjoyed it completely. Awaiting to continue the next book.
