This is the story of Rory and Lily. They have been married 5 years, and are still as in love as they day married. The book all takes place on their anniversary. They decide to celebrate with a little kink and role play.

While the book did have quite a bit of steam, because it was only 25 pages there wasn’t much else. I didn’t have an opportunity to connect with the couple or to see their connection with each other as more than just sex.

Don’t get me wrong I love kinky books, but I need to have a connection to at least one or both of the characters. In addition, I am not sure what the point of the story was and if asked to tell what it was about there isn’t much to mention more than the sex and role playing.

I received a copy of this eARC from NetGalley.

For real? Did I just read this? More importantly, why?

I don't really screw around with erotica very often, but every once in awhile I need a reminder of why that is. I generally don't mind sex scenes in my books if they're written well enough, but that's not an easy thing to pull off.

As is so often the case, the dialogue was pretty atrocious and the scenes themselves were described in an embarrassing way. The overall writing wasn't horrible though, and maybe with a little more room to maneuver, the author could have satisfied more.

Still, I guess it worked alright as a quickie.

2.5-3ish stars

Rory and Lily have been married for five years, still madly in love with one another and still willing to be adventurous in the bedroom. This year, their special night includes a little play time that includes a leash.

This was a very short read that actually packed quite a bit into it. The author did a fantastic job of giving you enough of a back story with both Rory & Lily that you were able to get a better feel for their characters. The reversal of the roles (in a way) was refreshing as well. I love my alpha males, and Rory was still a mans-man, but the idea that he was turned on by letting his shy wife take charge was hot.

The only problem was that I found myself wanting a little bit more of their play to be more intense, not in the kink factor - but in a sensual way. With the whole focus of the story on this one night, and the glimpses thrown in about their pasts, I never reached the boiling point. This was my first NM Harris read, but this little sampler was enough to make me interested in more from this author.

1 TERRIBLY BORING STAR

Rory and Lily are celebrating their anniversary. They have a new baby, so haven't been able to spend a lot of alone time together. But the baby is with her grandmother and this is the night they can indulge in something they both love... a little role playing.

This story, although short seemed to take forever to get going. And once it arrived, that was just as boring if not more so. So sorry, but really not for me. I hate writing bad reviews, so I will leave it at that.

Disclaimer: A copy of this book was provided by the publisher for an honest review.

The story is short and steamy, but the characters lacked depth. I didn't really connect with them, which can be a bit of a mood killer for me. There was a bit of kinky play, but that's all it was "play." I wouldn't shelve this as BDSM. This is more of the light play that vanilla people do to feel "naughty." Meh.

It's a quick sexy read, but little else.

Additional Note: I was thrown off by the cover which clearly displays a woman of color, yet the book makes no mention of it (or at least none that I could find). So I can only assume that either the author just never bothered to put Lily's ethnicity into the story, or the cover artist assumed that by using a black & white photo of a woman of color she could pass as white, or they couldn't even tell she's a woman of color. I'm put off by all of these possibilities, especially since the cover art (which promised a woman of color) was a big reason I wanted to read the story in the first place.

Review

First things first I have to admit that I’m not a fan of a submissive male. In my opinion a male needs to be large and take charge to get me all fired up, so it was exceedingly hard for me to get into this book even though it was only 25 pages long.
The moment they started to get into their kinks is where the author lost me, which I’m disappointed about, because the first half of the book had me all kinds of excited as to where this anniversary night was headed. Up until that point it had been fun and flirty, finding out enough about their backgrounds to appreciate how much they loved and cared for each other. As I said, it’d been building up for what could have been one hell of a bang…pun intended.
There were a few little things that could have been different for such a short story too. The overuse of the word ‘bum’ for starters. The way it had been used wasn’t sexy, and then to use it again so soon after it had been used previously, was too much. There was a repetitiveness to the reasons why Lily was in her line of work which was unnecessary after it had been explained the first time. And the clincher for me was where the author explained in detail something that could have simply been put as ‘freshened up’. That would’ve been a whole lot sexier than the EWWWW moment that was going on in my head.
To close, I’ll say that though this book was not my usual erotic pick with an alpha male, it was a testament of his love for Lily that they share the same kinks and that he’s willing to do whatever she needs to make the normally unsure woman shine. And after all, love comes in all shapes, sizes, styles and kinks.

This story was gifted to me in exchange for an honest review.
Police Inspector Rory Stewart is excited to be going home. He and his wife Lily are celebrating their five year anniversary. Her mom has taken daughter Lily for the night. Both Rory and Lily have been married before and neither thought they would find love again. They are perfect for each other and feel blessed to be together.
If you were expecting Rory to take charge and orchestrate the evening you will be as surprised as I was when Lily becomes the dominating one. It is not the usual genre that I read, and I honestly don't know if I would have picked if I had known, BUT, with the being said the author did an amazing job. Sure this is a quick novella but the entire scene to me screamed out love and affection. The respect they had for another was amazing. They fit into their roles with ease and did it because it suited them. They enjoyed it. They loved it. And that is what is should all be about. You need to love who you are with and what you are doing. Period. This book portrayed that.
I would rate 3.5/5.

I didn't realize this story was only 25pages when I requested it. it's like reading a quick scene from a novel. Rory & Lily celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary with a little fun in the bedroom. I would've never thought it possible but you can immediately feel their love & admiration for each other. I just don't understand what the point of something so extremly short is. But regardless, it was good for what it was. I am not letting the length influence my review because the writing was good & the only reason it's not getting a five star review is because I think the sex scene needed to be more descriptive due to the length of the "novella".

very short book that just didn't take off for me. I felt that it was super rushed and I never got a feel for the characters. I did get the impression that the spark was still there for the married couple which is always a HEA.

I was given a copy of this boom via netgalley in return for an honest review.
