Review - "Bootstrap site blueprints" - David Cochran and Ian Whitley

Finished reading the book.

Bootstrap has become by far the most popular framework for empowering and enhancing frontend web design. This book is a hands-on guide to the inner workings of Bootstrap. In an easy-to-follow, step-by-step format, you'll experience the power of customizing and recompiling Bootstrap's LESS files and adapting Bootstrap's JavaScript plugins to design professional user interfaces.

We start by getting to know Bootstrap, how to download it, set up a site template based on the HTML5 Boilerplate, and practice compiling Bootstrap's LESS files to CSS. We then build a basic portfolio site with a full-width carousel, three columns of text, and social icons provided by Font Awesome—customizing Bootstrap's LESS files and adding our own in the process. We eventually learn how to turn it into a wordpress theme as well. We learn how to create responsive businesss, e-commerce and single page marketing websites using bootstrap. The book also walks us through the essential process for optimizing Bootstrap LESS/CSS and JavaScript for production that will be helpful in all kinds of projects. We also learn how to implement responsive images and how to add swipe functionality in our carousels using Hammer.js.

The book covers lots of aspects where bootstrap can be successfully used. Additionally, those who do not know LESS will find this book a reasonably thorough primer. Overall its a good inspiration to start using Bootstrap in our projects.

I picked up a copy of "Bootstrap Site Blueprints" with a few expectations in mind , firstly to familiarize with Bootstrap which has become one of the foremost front end frameworks and secondly to really gain a hands on experience to develop an in depth knowledge rather than surface level understanding.
The first chapter takes you through setting up the environment , then creating a basic home page with Bootstrap including few home page elements. Having obtained a basic understanding in the first chapter , the second chapter provides a step by step hands on walk through for creating a portfolio site that includes a responsive navigation bar, sliding carousels, a three column page with a footer. While performing the exercises , we also learn the basics of responsive design and the importance of development for multiple screen sizes.

The second chapter also includes a primer into the fundamentals of LESS [Lean CSS] which a popular CSS pre-processor, meaning that it extends the CSS language, adding features that allow variables, mixins, functions and many other techniques that allow you to make CSS that is more maintainable, themable and extendable. I was pleasantly surprised by the simplicity of the LESS primer and how we end up using it right away to customize our bootstrap installation to our needs.
With the above experience of customizing Bootstrap's LESS files to our needs , we proceed to create a WordPress theme based on that in chapter 3 . I was pleasantly surprised how each chapter builds on the concepts and skills picked up from the previous lessons and through application we are constantly reinforcing our knowledge. In chapter 3 we download and use the Roots Framework which a popular WordPress Starter theme that has bootstrap integrated into it. We proceed to convert the static theme developed earlier into a full fledged WordPress Theme. While doing this we learn important WordPress Concepts like Advanced custom fields, page templates , WordPress Loops , integrating LESS/ CSS / Java script using the right way etc.

Chapters 4th and 5th take you even deeper down the rabbit hole where we build a complete Business front end for an ecommerce site along with product pages , here we re apply a few concepts learned in the earlier chapters while learning some new ones like writing media queries , implementing our own color schemes and designing a complex responsive layout.

The final chapter was my favorite where we build a complete single page site from scratch . through this process we end up making a jumbotron, a features list using the Bootstrap Fontawesome Icons, a masonry layout for testimonials using java script plugin and finally wrapping up with a complete custom styled pricing table.

I found this book not only interesting in terms of concepts but it is also a tutorial that needs to be practiced and exercised . I would recommend it to any one itching to get started with front end development frameworks.

Bootstrap Site Blueprints

I've been a huge fan of Bootstrap for a while now, there are a few issues that I had while learning but it was pretty painless to get going and figure new things out as I went along. The documentation is well received via the website for bootstrap but I felt it lacked more robust examples, sure the simple things are there. The robust examples in this book are well written and easy to follow along, I enjoyed the WordPress Theme section, it's widely used and something that every web developer needs to work with at some point in time. This book not only guides you along your path of learning, the examples incorporate various bootstrap elements, and using them when they are needed. This book isn't throwing out an html page with an example of a navbar but a full-fledged example of a navbar with full content.

Excellent Book and well worth the cost!

Excelente libro, se requiere un entendimiento básico de Bootstrap y CSS. Es una especie de guía, pero con proyectos típicos a desarrollar. Toca los puntos más relevantes de Bootstrap, sus componentes y cómo sacarle provecho con LESS.
