The story of Drug & Drop picks up right where Legal Drug left off! Kazahaya awakens from a disturbing dream of the sister he had to part from, Kei—covered in blood and clutching him close to her. If it's a case of seeing spirits, there's one young (?) man Kazahaya and Rikuo can go to for advice—a special guest character CLAMP fans know from xxxHolic and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle—Kimihiro Watanuki!
CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.
In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.
In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.
Taking place after the events of Legal Drug, Drug & Drop follows the same characters of Rikuo and Kazahaya who have now been working at the store for a year. It's more of the same stuff from Legal Drug, with a little bit more emphasis on Rikuo this time and him trying to find his sister. It's every bit as weird and psychedelic as Legal Drug was and the ending was a total wtf moment (in a good way!). I can't wait to read the second and final volume.
Yeah, I'm not even sure I enjoyed this half as much as I did Legal Drug except Watanuki's there so.

Past!me had no idea what they were saying, except for the Watanuki bit.
This is better than the original run of Legal Drug: you can see how much CLAMP has improved over the years, not only when it comes to art (this is drawn in the simpler style similar to xxxHolic, not the more elaborate CLAMP style, but you can see that the lines are stronger and more sure). The storytelling is also a lot more cohesive; I think because they hit their stride with the episodic supernatural shop story in xxxHolic and are now more prepared to do something with that format. We're also finally going somewhere with the Kei and Tsukiko storylines. Kazahaya has lost some of his frenetic energy (look, early 2010s was a strange time okay? A lot of manga I read from that time and earlier had this frenetic energy).
Overall it's Legal Drug but with stronger mangaka behind it and it's so nice to see Watanuki from an outsider's perspective. (The older woman / Yuuko vibes is really helping him out here.)
After a long hiatus (but still not the longest CLAMP has managed to achieve), Kazahaya and Rikuo are back. You can actually tell it's been a while, not only because the title changed, but also because the art style is a bit different. Kazahaya and Kakei basically look the same and Saiga just looks only a little less boxy and menacing, but Rikuo's change is pretty noticable. He's still tall, dark and handsome, but he seems less muscular and more slender now. His hair also keeps growing. The art style in general is still beautiful, though. No backrounds where none need to be, but if there are, they're breath taking as always. Everyone is either cute or beautiful, even splattered with blood.
The plot is starting to crawl towards something big. We start to learn more about Tsukiko and Kei and start to figure out that Kazahaya and Rikuo could be indeed very important people who need to be guided and protected by Kakei and Saiga.
Of course CLAMP couldn't resist doing some crossover stuff once again. I think they're addicted to it by now. It started out as as fun easter eggs years ago, but now I'm starting to worry that at some point one wouldn't get a story by them anymore without having read all the other manga. Luckily, I of course knew who Watanuki was and wasn't bewildered by the job he had for the boys.
Said job of course gave Rikuo once again the opportunity to hold Kazahaya protectively, which is always welcome. I feel like they're closer now than they were in Legal Drug. Even Kazahaya's protests seem half hearted now, while Rikuo is in full on "Don't you dare hurt him!" mode as soon as a supernatural being looks at his partner wrong. Looking forward to finding out if this will actually lead somewhere this time. If we'll ever find out in this lifetime hahahahhaha.
This series is the sequel to another series called Legal Drug, which involved a disappointingly small amount of drugs. The same criticism applies here, but this time I wasn't expecting a drug-based plot, so I wasn't disappointed.
However, like Legal Drug, I still don't think Drug & Drop is very good. I mean, it's good, but only barely. The story is rather uneventful, and it still follows an episodic route, with chapters that are mostly disconnected from each other. If I had to pick my favorite thing, it'd be the two main characters, who are both likable.
There is only one more volume of the entire Legal Drug franchise. I will read it, but I do not expect it to save the series.
I've waited for years for "Legal Drug" to continue (since it first came out in Germany which was in 2004) and it's just like me that eleven years later I didn't even notice that the sequel came out until another three (almost four) years later.
Better late than never, I finally noticed and I loved it!
I still love the characters so much, not only Kazahaya and Rikuo, my favourites have actually always been Kakei and Saiga and they still are. And there’s still not enough of them.
But this is my only criticism. The story seems move much faster than I remember it from the “Legal Drug” series and I’m really looking forward to reading more.
The xxxHolic crossover made me want to read this series, too, and I definitely will after reading Volume 2 of “Drug and Drop” and re-reading “Legal Drug”.
This is a discontinued manga that only has two volumes I only managed to but the first volume online for 7$ when I first started my manga collection.I Rate this book a 3.5 stars mainly due to nostalgia and a quick read.
Seeing the 2 mc's growing closer together, watching over eachother at crucial times is so precious. Also the xxxholic crossover was super fun! Very interessting turn of events. Seeing the past come more to the front now has me very curious
Bueno bueno, hello there!!! Kein kudos to clamp! Vamos men, mas lazy imposible. Sad. Kein kudos to clamp!!! No puedo decir mas que "I'll be waiting".
CW for an instance of self-harm, and an instance of animal cruelty.
So glad I finished reading this! Volume 1 of Drug & Drop feels incredibly short, even if I hadn't read the omnibus copy of Legal Drug, but I didn't enjoy this any less for that.
I'm not entirely sure how much longer after the first series this takes place, whether it occurs days later, weeks later, a year later, etc. What I can tell you is that the majority of this volume is a crossover with the later volumes of another CLAMP series, xxxHolic, as this time Rikuo and Kazahaya are on an errand for Kimihiro Watanuki, who is the now the acting owner of the shop that grants wishes [formerly run by Yuuko Ichihara.] As a long-time CLAMP fan and lover of their multi-verse crossover elements, I was absolutely delighted to see cameos of Watakuni and the shop! The story surrounding the errand he wants the boys to run for him has just enough elements of the stories from xxxHolic while remaining true to the nature of the stories from Legal Drug and I utterly love that.
Additionally, this volume gives us hints as to the true nature of Saiga and Kakei (which you can find out if you do a little searching on either the main Wikipedia page for Legal Drug or on the CLAMP wikis, and it's a little surprising, especially since they've also hinted as to the reason they're running this drugstore.) The bigger thing tying into the over-arcing plot of the series itself is that we get more hints and leads as to what happened or is happening with the woman from Rikuo's past, Tsukiko, and what is going on with Kazahaya's twin sister, Kei Both of those plot threads leave on a tense note, and it's left me wondering especially what's happened with Tsukiko.
I honestly loved reading this, even if it felt short. I'm going to have to refrain from reading the second volume right away, because I'm worried that it'll feel like it's all over too soon.
This first volume of Drug & Drop is miles better than its first iteration, Legal Drug. The art style has greatly improved, which makes sense since CLAMP had 10 more years of experience under their belt for this one. The story seems more grounded and like there is an actual overarching plot to it. I didn't expect the crossover with xxxHolic, but I think xxxHolic shows up somehow in all CLAMP works? I'm glad that the weird reactions to even the hint of "gay behavior" has toned way down from Legal Drug. It's still there, annoyingly, but it's nowhere as near as bad as it was in Legal Drug. They still joke about it, but now it's much more in the tone of "They clearly deeply care about each other, but they're pretending they don't". It reads now as "The love is mutual, they're just idiots" instead of the weird "internalized homophobia" style of "jokes" from before. The story now has the floaty mysterious feeling that the entire xxxHolic series has, and I can't decide how I feel about it. Some people have described it as "psychedelic", which I hesitantly agree with. Thankfully, this series has way more focus on Kazahaya and Rikuo and their pasts, which was the only interesting plot point of Legal Drug.
The series Legal Drug went on hiatus (at least in English) in 2003. Ten years later, the story was picked up in this follow-up series. Kazahaya and Rikuo are sent on a mission that involves meeting Kimihiro Watanuki, their opposite number from the xxxHolic series. He is now confirmed to his shop, in the absence of his boss, and so he sends the pair to an ancient house inhabited by an inebriated and weakened vampire. Their job is not to fight the vampire, but to release him from his prison. Kazahaya falls ill, possessed by the vampire's mental state- Rikuo offers it blood, and in return the vampire gives him a tragic prediction.
They have clearly switched to a new artist for this follow up series, which is a nice change. They are starting to reveal some of the pieces of the character's backstories, but I find myself less and less interested in the prophesied blood-soaked conclusion. Maybe it would be better to imagine the boys as happily working in the stop forever, never facing their destinies.
Ok, I want to know what's up with Kazahaya. I want his back story! This story was totally meh, except for the Watanuki cameo. I was so excited to see a familiar face that I'm actually considering trying xxxHolic again. In the early 2000s I was reading xxxHolic and Tsubasa in parallel, but abandonded xxxHolic when I decided Tsubasa was soooooo much more interesting. I always have liked Watanuki though. Maybe that fact that I'm talking about CLAMP manga that aren't "Drug & Drop" volume 1 will clue you in to the fact that even though I read this yesterday, it was totally immemorable.
Maybe this will be the year I decide I've grown out of Manga (that probably should have happened a long time ago).
I read this as part of my Year of Visual Arts initiative for 2023. I typically read CLAMP for their illustrations ... not their stories.
So why???

The world(s) of CLAMP keep growing, and the return of a familiar face!
Rather an interesting start to new adventures for "The Boys" (haw haw haw). To be honest the is the 1st series I've read with yaoi elements. It is very toned down, almost subtle, yet also blatant in a way. No sexual stuff, but definitely some sparks! And the last couple pages... Yikes! I'm not gonna give it away, but wow. Just wow. Really worth the read. I'm already anxious to start book 2.
I'm honestly glad that they continued Legal Drug into these two volumes personally. I was so curious about Rikuo and Kazahaya's pasts and I feel like the three volumes of Legal Drug didn't really elaborate on their backgrounds before the events of volume one. I have read quite a few CLAMP series this year and I am enjoying all the ones I have read so with this one being no exception. I am looking forward fo volume 2 for sure.
What the fuuuuuuuck??? That was such a creepy, disturbing ending! Definitely seeming darker than original series, but delving more into secrets and history of the characters. Still no real answers, but it's like moving forward to those answers. I like seeing Watanuki; xxxHolic may be next thing I pick up.
Reading random Clamp manga that’s available on my library app. I’ve never read this before and I’ll admit that I’m confused. Two of the characters, I keep mistaking them for each other. Oh wells, let’s give the second volume a try.
Edit: Just read the synopsis and this story picks up at the end of another series, Legal Drug. I’m reading out of order. Oops! Let me start with Legal Drug and then I’ll come back to this. My bad~~
So funny story... As a Clamp lover I picked this book up (because I want to own copies of all of Clamps work). Decided to read this on a whim. Not realizing this was a sequel series to Legal Drug (something I had never read before) haha whoops. But even then, I understood the premise. I really enjoyed myself. :) I truly feel like Clamp can do no wrong. Seriously. <3
I really like this series! I wish that they continue with it soon. There's crossovers (of course, this IS clamp we're talking about). They're so cute together!
Let me say this first, yes this is the first volume but technically it's the fourth. If you have not read Legal Drug 1-3 you will be completely lost and probably won't enjoy this much. The back blurb says it picks up right where Legal Drug left off and that is true. However it was a full decade between the end of Legal Drug and the publication of Drug and Drop. While I believe the ladies of CLAMP may have had the storyline hashed out back then when the publication issues arose but I doubt they had it drawn.
Why do I say that? Because the art is better now, more refined. There is less of the 1990s Gumby body thing going on. The faces are sharper, more clean and pretty. Kazahaya is definitely even more femme than he was a decade ago in looks. A weird aside: Kazahaya is drawn blond most of the time but in a few of the black and white shots he's shaded a bit darker and in the colored shot he has brown hair.
CLAMP does something that does annoy me: guest spots. Some people love that but if it gets too much it drives me away. Rikuo and Kazahaya get a new job working for none other than Kimihiro Watanuki. For fans of Xxxholic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle this is good news. I didn't mind him being here for this but I was never a huge fan of either of those things. I wouldn't want him around constantly because then I'd feel like I need to reread those to get what's going on and that annoys me.
That aside, their new mission seems simple enough take a box to a house because Watanuki cannot leave the shop (see what I mean? I don't know why that is because I never finished Xxxholic and now I'm annoyed as to why he can't leave). Of course nothing is ever that simple and they encounter a strange spirit or should I say Rikuo does because Kazahaya's powers often leave him in a faint and this time he is down for the count and pretty much taken over by this spirit.
However we learn more about Rikuo in this and what he is searching for, Tsukiko, the mystery woman. And the arc is the entirely volume more or less which feels more robust than the short episodes. Kazahaya will be changed by the end of it a little and Rikuo goes off on his own to do more searching. Unfortunately someone is searching fo Kazahaya and she seems pretty unbalanced which could make for interesting drama later.
There was less of the shonen-ei flirting in this and a little less of Kazahaya being annoyed with Rikuo. I hope to see that continue. Don't get me wrong. I want them to be a couple but I want it to move beyond that adolescent nonsense (okay they're only 18 but still). I was happy with this in spite of the decade long wait. I hope this time they'll get to see the story out to its conclusion.
