In a society of witches, trust is a tenuous thing. Especially for a (semi) reformed serial killer.
I thought winning in court meant I could finally wash my hands of my past. Turns out, I was wrong. When I’m handed an assignment to kill eight people in four weeks, it’s clear that some things never change.
Working both sides of the law is a balancing act I never wanted. The gang’s leader wants those eight people alive, turning what should be a clean job into a mercy mission—one that’s bound to cause problems at the Capitol.
Following orders has never been my strong suit, but it’s the only thing keeping me breathing. If I want to keep my cover intact, I’ll have to play along. Otherwise, I’ll lose more than just my freedom. I’ll lose my head.
Quinn Cameron writes queer romance stories packed with fantasy, paranormal intrigue, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
She thrives on damaged characters, tragic backstories, and the sweet, sweet agony of hurt/comfort—because what's love without a little emotional devastation first?
No matter how much angst she puts her characters through, she guarantees a happily ever after (or at least a very satisfying "about damn time").
When she's not torturing fictional souls, she can be found daydreaming, sipping iced lattes, and thinking up new ways to make her readers yell at their Kindles.
This was such a strong second installment of this urban fantasy, definitely no middle book syndrome here, and sits at a solid 4.5 stars for me.
As fun as book one being set in the prison was, being introduced to more of this world, the rules and laws of it really added more richness and depth to the story. It didn’t take long for me to find myself being drawn into the all the games of loyalty and deception going on. I’ve been trying to pace myself so I’m not waiting for the release of book 4 at the end but I’m not doing a good job 😂.
Fitch is fast becoming a favourite protagonist for me. The moral complexities and trauma he is trying to navigate, having been kidnapped as a child and groomed and abused to be a murderer, but still wanting to try and be a good person, really has my heart breaking for him. There was multiple scenes where I felt my heart drop for Fitch and I just wanted to yell on his behalf.
The slow burn is slow burning and I’m so keen for the pay off (I love me a good slow burn and Nash is a precious angel). It’s possibly worth noting that the slow burn in this story is more of an emotional connection slow burn as Fitch is already in a friends with benefits situation with Nash when book one starts, however there is no expectation exclusivity and there is one off page hook up with a random female character (on page spicy scenes have only been between Nash and Fitch and I expect that will like be the way it continues).
This continues to be a strong urban fantasy adventure with gritty Gotham-esque vibes.
Absolutely love this author and this story and these characters! Book 2 continues the story, but also gives so much insight into the tragic backstory of my absolute favorite book boyfriend - Fitch Farrows. But the book isn’t just heartbreaking- it’s full of hilarious mishaps and banter and just keeps weaving webs between the complex relationships of the characters.
Read this in one sitting. Completely ignored my children. Even better than book 1, I am now addicted to this series. Highly recommend. Read it. There is a girl on the cover and the MC is bisexual but this has a slow burn m/m romance that spans the whole series. There is no on page m/f action.
"Apparently, if you have one good cry next to a melting cadaver, everyone thinks you're a basket case."
Oh yes, Book 2 hits the ground running. Fitch is beginning to realise he's not just Grimm's attack dog, and that maybe the person he was before the Bloody Hex leader "adopted" him and turned him into the marionette, might not be as dead and buried as he's tried to make him over the years. He's having a crisis of confidence. Not great if you're a renowned assassin (alleged) and caught between your old boss and the Capitol bigwig who's hired you on the downlow to do bad things.
Fitch tries to balance good and bad, but it's not all plain sailing, especially when your circle of trust has just two people in it.
We get a lot more MM action in this one, which I know will please some readers. (Nash's patience for Fitch's chaos gremlin persona deserves a Boyfriend of the Year award).
To top it all off, in this book, we see more of Fitch's humanity (and how it was taken from him), and it's heartbreaking.
I can't wait for our trauma boi to get his murder on. Grimm's days are numbered.
I enjoyed Pulling Strings but reading this now, I feel the first book was just a warmup to Capitol Matters. When I was kinda impartial to Fitch in 1st bool as the storyline was moving on fast and he was just trying to roll with the punches, I really loved him now. He had more space to deal with his emotions and feelings and come into his own bit more as I feel this book was more character than plot driven. He was overall so much more fun and really enjoyed his funny remarks to anything. And even when the story started getting more serious I think thr best thing about it was that Fitch didn't let the story overtake him and kept being more true of himself all throughout the book and hopefully also in the next book(s).
I must say I love Nash but I cannot stand Donnovan... Fitch deserves better and can't wait for him to finally start acting on his own accord and out of the influence of Grimm in any aspect of his life.
First installment was a small introduction and in this one we are finally getting into matter...
Thank you to @inkslinglerpr for the #gifted copy of the book.
This picked up where book 1 left off. I don’t want to give too much away. Fitch is helping the people his father used to work for which is supposed to help his gang. He is sort of playing both sides, but is he? Time will tell. In Book 2, we learn more about Fitch and his brothers past and we see Fitch’s relationship with Nash grow. I still hate Grimm.
“You bought your fate with a temper fit, and twelve years hasn’t changed you at all. You still don’t know when to quit, when to keep your mouth shut, or when to take your licks and lay the f*ck down.”
So, lets be real – who’s the ACTUAL puppet master here? Gosh, I loved Capitol Matters, Quinn did not fail to deliver. I felt like my heart was being ripped out of my chest one minute, and I was laughing the next. HOW? Because – Fitch. THAT’S HOW.
Two words: Read. It.
What I Enjoyed
Fitch’s Character Arc: Quinn takes us on a trip with Capitol Matters through the basket case that is Fitch Farrow and his mind. We see him struggle with the complexities of trying to be “good” but also being stuck in this position where he has to stay “bad”. We get a glimpse into pre-Bloody Hex Fitch, and honestly- I fell more in love with him and just want to tuck him under my arms and save him from all the bad things. Well, really- I’d like to tuck him into Nash’s bed and never allow him to leave.
A Deeper Glimpse into Nash + Fitch: This one is basically self explanatory. My heart jumps with joy when reading about Nash & Fitch. I see Nash as Fitch’s conscience – the Jimmy Cricket to his Pinocchio if you will. But also, maybe not that example… because that visual is not… yeah. LOL, YOU GET IT. It’s just really nice to see Fitch have something *good*.
Ripley + Maggie: I’m continuously intrigued by this relationship- I’m wondering if at any point it will implode. Ripley’s just going to keep stringing his pink-pigtailed-flesh-eating-basically-dead-girlfriend around? For how much longer? Ripley himself is also a curious character. I didn’t feel like I got to know him much more in this book – but also… just enough to keep me guessing.
The Inner Workings of the Capitol: Honestly, this encapsulated Holland and the goonies too. It was great to see Quinn include the fact that just because Fitch was deemed as not guilty means that everyone believes it. The fact that the capitol agents were butt heads to him made total sense – and that sense of being the black sheep in the captiol really does help his character arc.
What I Didn’t Like
Grimm. : This dude is just ruthless. Literally does everything he can to break Fitch – over and over and over again. I don’t even think he’s that good of a gang leader, like… ditching the Bloody Hex with Vinton? Come on dude… I need Grimm to just be gone. But we have 2 more books…
Clyde: QUINN DANGLED CYLDE IN OUR FACES… AND NADA… WOMAN, I SWEAR.
Over All Thoughts
Quinn continues into Capitol Matters with such brilliance, humor and entertainment. We learn more about Fitch, we see Donnie, we experience Holland, we love Nash – it’s a hodge-podge of making you laugh and cry all within a couple of pages. I love Quinn Cameron‘s writing and story telling, you’re drawn into the series and truly feel for Fitch. He needs someone to care for him, and right now, that’s us.
My questions forever… WHERE IS CLYDE?
I am ecstatic for the next installment in the series – and highly recommend Capitol Matters and Pulling Strings.
"We really can't be running into each other like this." He edged in close to poke his elbow into my gut. "Might need to coordinate schedules. Have your people call my people and so on." "I don't have people, you dick."
A solid second installment: we get to see more of the world, more of Fitch's impressive magic, and some burgeoning romance with a certain bartender...
Review of advance copy received from Author I don't know how a book can make you laugh hard one moment, then give you a horrible heartbreak the next, and then patch you together to start all over again. Please send help! I cannot find anything to fault in it. It's absurd how I ended up feeling something for every single character, even those who were around for just a couple of pages. Glaring 5🌟 and it's all I have to say. It gave me major Hazbin hotel vibes and I recommend it to all fans of the show, or anyone who wants a gripping story that will relentlessly punch you in the feels. The next book cannot come out soon enough!
Quinn continues with a 5 star storyline Capitol Matters is the second book in this series and it’s simply magnificent! We get so many golden nuggets in this book; we get a deeper understanding of the magic system, more of Nash and fitches history/relationship and we get some awesome character development. Fitch is brattier than ever but I absolutely love it- through his chaos and impulses you can really see how much he cares about his brother and just wants to keep him safe. Sweet baby Donavan seems to be coming to his senses and seeing things for what they truly are- I look forward to the rest of the series to see just how loyal the bloody hex will stay to Grimm 🤔
I am so glad I stumbled across this series. This book picks up not long after the end of the first, with a plague raging through the community and Fitch Farrow walking a tightwire between the people of his old life in the Capitol and the Bloody Hex gang. Fitch may be called Marionette because of his telekinesis, but he is quickly learning that he is the puppet in all of the political games.
Sick to death of death and being caught in a tug-of-war between Grimm and Lyle, Fitch wonders if he can ever recapture the innocence of his childhood as Holland remembers him, and protect his brother, Donovan, from following down his path. He allows himself to hope and plan an escape, but still keeps his friends at arms length because he just cannot see a happy ending with himself in it.
If you're wondering why Fitch has never run away before, this book dips deeper into Fitch's past, showing how Grimm and his gang warped a young boy and taught him the futility of trying to escape. Where the last book hinted at a past between Fitch and Avery, this one takes the conjurer from strange clown to outright monster, while Fitch's own actions seem to tighten the chains around him, binding him to the Bloody Hex.
I can't say how frustrated I was to reach the last page and realize I had to wait for the next book, Brother's Keeper, before finding out how Fitch will deal with the latest betrayal against him. In a world of twisted magic, Fitch is caught between a rock and a hard place and, despite recent reservations, his brother may not want to be saved.
Holy crow. I thought that book 1 had me in a stronghold, but this… this was pretty amazing.
Fitch Farrow, the MMC, is out on the streets again. The reader sees him trying to balance looking out for his brother, working with Holland Lyle as a consultant of sorts, wrestling with his growing feelings for Nash, and also trying to come to terms with his twisted relationship with Grimm, as we see some peeks into Fitch’s past via flashbacks.
My heart just breaks for Fitch, who has been through hell. It also hurts for his brother, who wanted so badly to be a part of the Bloody Hex and now that he is… maybe the grass isn’t so green after all.
I flew through this, because I just had to see what would happen next in every chapter. Fitch works hard to keep Capitol Fitch and Hex Fitch separate, but eventually the lines start to blur. I don’t know how people in real life are able to work undercover, because I think I would lose my mind trying to keep everything straight. Fitch definitely starts to feel the pressure, leading to some tough decisions , and— if the cliffhanger ending is any indication — a possible point of no return.
Marionette, the puppet master, the name everyone know Fitch as thanks to his telekinetic skills and his ability to kill.
But who is the real puppet master? Because in this book, Fitch seems more and more like a puppet himself.
He finds himself trapped receiving orders by opposite sides but he doesn't feel that strong anymore to keep up the act as he used to. His mask is starting to crack. He behaves like he doesn't have a soul but he wasn't born without one, it was stolen from him.
There are people who see through him, or know the past version of him, and maybe there's hope he can escape this life. I don't know. I know right now I hope he will be happy, end up with a lumberjack husband, a childhood friend and a safe brother.
Donovan, Fitch's brother, feels more and more lost. I hope to see more of him and him becoming a "full" character, more mature and pursuing what he really wants.
Oh, Fitch, my heart breaks for you. You're trying so hard, and it's impossible not to root for you, especially with Nash by your side. This book took me on an emotional rollercoaster, from laughter to sadness in the blink of an eye.
Fitch's ongoing struggle with himself and his surroundings was so relatable. Despite his efforts, he continues to face challenges that test his resolve and self-worth.
One of my favorite quotes from the book was, "She missed me? Most days I missed me, too." It shows Fitch's inner turmoil and the complexity of his character in just a few words.
It took me 2 months to get through this book because of moving BUT that’s how addicting this series is. Although it took me time I didn’t forget about it. Fitch as usual is my favorite bad guy. He’s sexy, he’s charming and he knows he’s bad. He’s the perfect book boyfriend that would be dangerous to have in real life. Unlike the first book, Fitch has been getting soft. I’d like to see what happens in the 3rd book. Between the Capitol and Grimm, they have me on my toes. Who’s going to do what? I hope to find out soon.
This second book in the series really got into some nitty and gritty ideas with the main character Fitch while also building relationships and casting him into further chaos! I loved this book and the series so far!! Def a hard to put down kind of story!
I actually really liked book two of this series it gave us a lot more backstory on our mmc which makes us all like him a bit more and understand him better. This book contained heartache, laughable situations, and understanding and it was definitely a good book by a even better author who I’ve just discovered and am growing to love
I really enjoyed this book 😄 it had a lot action and mixed emotions. I can't wait to read the 3rd and 4th one. One of the best series I've read so far.
Capitol Matters is book 2 in the Marionette series. It picks up right where Pulling Strings finished with Fitch Farrow working as a kinda dual agent. I loved Fitch in the first book but he just destroyed this book. I love this author and can’t wait to see how everything plays out!
Oh Fitch. You poor sad man. I loved learning more of his back story and I loved seeing Nash go squishy for Fitch. This story kept me gripped and I am eager to start the next one.
Ahhh! The book left me hanging!! What a cliffhanger at the end there. I need more now!
This book was such a rollercoaster of high stakes, danger, bloody murder, cat and mouse, a sprinkle of romance, and emotional turmoil!
Oh Fitch, I really just want to give the dude a giant hug, I mean serious, he’s gone through so much and we get to see peeks of his past throughout the story that give us the bigger picture of who is he.
I enjoyed all these sides of Fitch and honestly I love seeing his character fracture a bit so he can grow and discover himself and who he wants to be.
The story was of course an action packed thriller that kept me hooked to the edge of my seat until the very end.
And as I mentioned that ending totally left me wanting more!
Really enjoying this series, but it’s incredibly annoying that all the professional women are incredibly attractive 20-somethings who wear stilettos, mini skirts and sheer tops to work.
This is by far my fav book in the series, this book 2 of the marionette series and wow this blew my mind. Fitch is now on the path of breaking free from the chains boind to him at such a yoing age.
Too long he obeyed his evil boss/master, like a good doggy but he is now rebelling but at what cost.
I loved the growth in this story especially his closeness with Nash, who I can't wait to watch them blossom together some more. Even his relationship with his brother was amazing to see grow some more in the second installment.
I enjoyed the feel of this story, as we see a more vulmerable side to Fitch than we did in the first book. But we also see more kindess and badass sides of him. Like he is trying to fight to be the boy he was before his world got turmed upside down. He is trying to break free.
Fitch is struggling with life after prison. He's working for both sides of the law and isn't doing well. His outlook is very pessimistic. He's still trying to keep Donavan safe. Nothing is really resolved in this book.
Ugh. Fitch is in a downward spiral and is struggling. This book is just great. So many twists and turns. Loved the Nash content 😮💨. This book had me going through all 5 stages of grief. This book is just so good and hurt.
This was a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read for me! I absolutely love Fitch. I feel like he has grown a lot but is still going through it. He just wants to help his brother... he's acquitted and now working both sides. He is literally going through it. You will literally laugh then be devastated with heartbreak. This book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions with all the twists and turns! A must read and I'm excited to see where book 3 goes!
First off this picks up right where Pulling Strings ended so please read that one first.
What do you do when everyone is against you and nothing is going right? Who can you trust and can you keep your brother safe? Fitch is forced to deal with a lot of new things while also remembering more from his past.
See what happens with Fitch and his new Capitol job that he never wanted. What happens with the Bloody Hex as their fearless leader plays it up in his new disguise in the Capitol?
Fitch shows us more about what happened all those years ago when his parents were murdered. We also see memories from his time as a child in the Capitol. What will Fitch do as everything around him is starting to crumble and he no longer knows who he can rely on?
I lam loving this story and I seriously can not wait to see what happens next but I am also terrified of who might be collateral damage. Will Fitch be able to save himself or his brother? We will just have to wait and see what comes next.
Wow, this book. When I read the first one, I said it felt like one long introduction (and the author actually read that, which made me feel a little bad—I hope she didn’t take offence), but now I’m afraid I’ve got to stick by that, as this is where the real action kicks off.
The whole time I was reading, I had a big issue: I struggled to feel any sympathy for the main character. Which is actually a good thing, because we shouldn’t really empathise with someone like that. But as I kept going, I started to understand him more and more, and now… damn. I feel so bad for him. But at the same time, I’m not sure he deserves redemption. It’s such a conflicting feeling, and I’m sure there are plenty of people like Fitch Farrow out there—people shaped by their circumstances who just can’t escape themselves. Once you get caught up in that cycle of crime, it’s incredibly hard to break free. I met a few people like that when I interned at a criminal law firm.
I’ll definitely keep reading the series, even if it crushes me along the way, haha.
