Introduces one of the best villains I've ever seen, who isn't what he is because of some tragic backstory or slow degeneration into evil, but because he simply has no comprehension of how his actions could seem evil to others.
Which causes him to actually take the time and try to understand what grief, malice, and hopelessness are and how he causes them. Obviously gets very dark at points, because his missing notions of suffering and cruelty cause him to do things like .
Yet all throughout, we also wonder if he is really trying to understand, or just fooling the people around him in order to be able to live out his sadistic tendencies.
A chilling portrayal of psychopathy, even though it's in a high fantasy setting and this villain is, of course, a demon who only appears to be human (no spoiler).
Nevertheless a highly memorable character, whose story and views can be likened to American Psycho's Patrick Bateman, although obviously without the humor and overarching critique of consumerism.

This series really commits to the view that the side trips and digressions are the point of a journey. Fortunately this one kicks off an interesting side quest to defeat a demon who can turn anything to gold. Of course, as any military strategist would immediately think, it's time for a tea party!

Wow, I'm tearing through these pages eagerly to reach the latest arc. That's my main goal, but it's just so interesting and engaging AND BEAUTIFUL that I couldn't help but stare in awe.

All that glitters might actually be gold for a change, as adventuring in the North leads to Frieren, Fern, and Stark assisting a familiar face against a demon who rules a cursed city. And this demon has managed to defeat Frieren once before…
How much do I love this series? So very much. Things continue as they have previously, which means they’re absolutely perfect for the lover of reflective fantasy that knows how to both tell a story and have a deeper meaning beneath it.
The first chapters are mostly small nuggets before we get to the golden city portions, but the starting one in particular is a very lovely combination of the usual antics (Frieren’s awful money management is a running gag at this point) plus a moment of connection with the past that turns out to be more moving for our hero than expected.
As usual, the manga knows what jokes to keep hammering - may I never get tired of the useless spells Frieren keeps finding - and remains wonderfully focused on actions and the consequences thereof, and what happens after the decisive battle (I mean, that’s right in the title) as time marches relentlessly forward.
Which leads to the meat of the volume, as Denken the mage returns to try and save a quarantined parcel of land that’s home to the demon Macht and precious little else, as Macht turned the entire area to gold decades ago and was contained when he proved too powerful to defeat.
This arc is about the hubris and, yes, stupidity of men when attempting to subvert power they shouldn’t be mess with to fuel their own endless greed. The worst part of this whole thing is how avoidable Macht’s destruction could have been.
As usual, I’m constantly in awe of how strong this manga is at depicting non-human characters as non-human. It’s some of the best fantasy writing I’ve enjoyed; this entire scheme of a human king falls apart because he does not recognize the failing in what he’s even asking.
And when Macht’s own desires are revealed, only Frieren recognizes that a wolf in sheep’s clothing is still a wolf. The way Macht keeps appearing to be more reasonable than the average demon is well realized because it’s clearly not true based on his actions, but it still makes you stop and think for a second.
Combined with Denken’s backstory and how long it has taken him to come to grips with returning to this area, it makes for powerful stuff. One line from Denken towards the end implies that there’s even more going on here than we’re privy to and I am all for it.
Now, it’s not all perfect. There are a couple of small things, lest you think I have zero ability to appraise this story. They just don’t have any impact on my overall enjoyment.
One, yellow flag for the use of the term ‘bougie’ in a universe where there is very unlikely to be a French royalty to invent the term to begin with. I allow this one because the joke around it is pretty darn funny (both in the story and in omake), but it’s anachronistic as all get out.
Also, and this is mostly annoying to psychology pedants, but the story apparently has absolutely no concept of what hypnosis actually is, or how it works, given that it’s not even doing the more stereotypical mind control stuff. It’s such an odd choice for what amounts to ‘here’s a bunch of memories’. I see the connection, but it’s really tenuous.

A little disappointed with this one. I'm not a big fan of the chapters that involve fighting demons since they go on for a long time. Take me back to the characters just vibing and the episodic nature of the earlier volumes.

Wow. It starts off strong with a simple story about a bridge. Both touching, and funny. Then we get to the golden city arc (Not sure if it's the real name, it's what I call it) and man oh man. Demons in this are truly....horrifying. But this slow burn, creepy at times, sad at others, arc is one of the best in the entire series. I love where we're going in this one.

Chapters 78 - 87
Chapter 78: Lake Korridor
The weather is horrible and there is no boat to sail around the lake. Frieren, Fern and Stark stays in town and do some visiting and shopping.
The boat owner said there is a biography of Hero Himmel hidden in the deserted monastery on the island, that is protected by a magic barrier. As they run out of coins, the boat fee would be to bring back the biography of Himmel.
This brings back memory, of how Himmel has lost his journal in the past. Frieren decides to accept the request and goes to the island. When they reach the island, Frieren breaks the magic barrier and opens the doors. Here they found the statue of Himmel sama. On the base of the statue is the journal. Freiren reads the journal and found that it is indeed in Himmel writing.
What was inside the journey was just everyday silly things that made in ordinary for everyone else. Frieren gave the journal to the ferryman. At that point, the ferryman realised who Frieren is, the mage in the Hero Party. He knows Frieren wants the journal and he gives it to her without her asking. He told Frieren that there are many journals here that would be more than enough to pay for their fee.
Frieren has been looking for journals by Himmel for a long time. There were many fake and this was the first time she found one real one. It is a treasure for her in reminding her of the journey. Yet, she shows no urgency. Just an expression on her face.
Chapter 79: Grand Valley of Tor
There is a deep valley and even flight magic cannot cross the valley. Frieren leads the team to walk to a bridge where she remembers there was once a dwarf named Gehn, who wants to build a bridge. The seed money was paid by Himmel. The bridge was built slowly by Gehn for the last two hundred years. There is a problem with crossing the bridge as there are giant monster birds that attack anyone who is trying to cross it. Gehn requested Frieren to clear the area of monsters and as a reward, he will give Frieren that magic of Perfectly flipped pancake magic. The backstory of Gehn met with Himmel and as a reward for accepting a request, built a bridge that would last for a thousand years.
Infrastructure is built with the vision of preparing for future generations.
Chapter 80: Holy Snow Crystals
Frieren, Fern and Sark come to an adventure campsite. They are here for the holy snow crystals. A person requests Frieren to get to the location where there will be a large deposit of Snow Cysteal. Then Frieren has to erect an anti-personal barrier.
There are monsters in the region. The site is beautiful with a wall of crystals reflecting sunlight. At first, Frieren thoughts the person wants to mine the crystals and prevent other people to get it first. Then she finds out the real reason.
Chapter 81: El Dorado
First Class Mage Lernen sama requested Frieren's help. A city is transformed many years ago by Macht of El Dorado into a city of gold. A magic barrier was put around El Dorado and still seals him in until this day.
Then they met Denken, who wanted to go to El Dorado because it was his hometown. At first, Frieren rejected this request and she didn't want to fight Macht. She met him once before and was defeated by him. She cannot picture herself winning this fight. Denken wants to free El Dorado because he used to live there with his wife. Now she has passed and the place is still fill with memories.
Chapter 82: Universal Gold Transmutation Magic
They discuss this in detail and Fern finds it troubling as she doesn't detect mana from the gold transmutation magic. So it is more like a curse. The first class mage who has been gathering details on the place. They want to find out more through the storytelling of what they know of this magic and the monster Macht.
Chapter 83: Stone Bracelet of Sovereignty
Macht is a very powerful demon. To control this demon, a human has a magic bracelet that can control a demon's mind. The thing is, human language says that demons cannot harm humans out of malicious. By demon has no guilt or feeling or feeling of harmful intent. Demons just do what they want to do for their purpose. In the end, the demon Macht serves as a human master and becomes a teacher of Denken when he is still young.
The question is, can demons coexist with humans? In the end, it is the demon who want to coexist that kill the more human, in order to observe or try to understand human condition.
Chapter 84: Daredevil
To know the background of Macht, Edel read the mind of an old servant who had escaped from the city before it was turned into gold.
Edel and the first class mage Lernen met with Macht. They see people who go into the magic barrier being killed by Macht and they are going to be next.
Chapter 85: Malice
Edel is trying to restore the Stone Bracelet of Sovereignty while Lernen fought with Macht. What they found is not so shocking. The bracket is still working. The action of Macht is committed without a slightest hint of malice.
Macht explains that a demon like him is aware of the word malice, but doesn't bear any notion of it. He doesn't feel malice. It is nature for them to see human as prey and kill them.
To escape, Lernen uses a golem and tries to beat a retreat. Edel quick attack managed to read Macht mind.
Chapter 86: Talks
Denken keeps talking to Macht as if the demons can still act as if he is civil. One thing Denken is hoping for is for Macht to have the magical power to revise the curse.
Even if he has the power, he is not liable to do as he was told.
Frieren is going to meet Macht and Stark volunteers to join her even if he is shaken with fear. He knows himself so well. Stark have confident with his ability to flee from danger and he is confident he will carry Frieren with him when he runs.
Demons are liars. Frieren sees through it even if Denken doesn't. Frieren asks provocative questions. Why does Macht keep killing people despite his wish to coexist with people?
Chapter 87: Favour
Frieren has analysed after the meeting and thinks they cannot defeat Macht right now.
What is Malice? What is Guilt? This is unknown to the demon and Macht wants to find out.
Conclusion
Excellent series. The exploration of humanity through Frieren is very interesting.
To know the meaning of life is not easy. Life is a journey. And to find a companion that is worth your time is precious. When a person dies, all that is left is the memory of this person in other people's memory. And after all these people are gone, unless they are written in books, the trace of them will be gone too.
Frieren like little magic. That's the hint to find everyday happiness. A little joy of biting to a good biscuit, or popping a piece of chocolate while listening to something good.
Demons are like sociopaths, who are interested in learning about feelings without feeling them.
The determination of the brave is not that they would succeed, is to see what needs to be done and find the courage to get it done.
Wonderful storytelling. What's after the hero's journey is to see how to find a path to peace.

Più interessante dei precedenti, soprattutto per la faccenda del demone e della maledizione dell'oro. I primi capitoli però sono davvero delle subquest poco ispirate... (bellissimi i disegni degli animali)

Dans ce 11e tome, nous retrouvons Frieren et le mage Denken aux prises avec deux démons très puissants. Une bonne partie de ce volume est, de fait, consacré au combat que chacun va mener respectivement. Autant dire que les tensions et les enjeux sont énormes. Les scènes d’actions sont également légion, mais il ne faut pas croire que cela soit exempt de texte. Bien au contraire ! L’adversaire de Frieren est très bavarde et tente tout pour déstabiliser notre héroïne. Là encore, notre elfe favorite va puiser dans son passé et les innombrables connaissances qu’elle a acquis pour pouvoir avoir une chance de vaincre son adversaire.
Voilà des passages bien angoissants dans lesquels j’ai eu assez peur pour Denken, mais aussi pour Frieren. J’ai été ravie de voir que même s’ils sont morts depuis longtemps, ses anciens compagnons (Himmel et compagnie) lui sont toujours d’une très grande aide surtout dans les moments les plus compliqués. Mais, je n’en dis pas plus pour ne pas gâcher la lecture.
Pour le reste de l’histoire est sur quelque chose de plus conventionnel et de presque ennuyeux. La routine, en quelque sorte. Toutefois, je ne m’attendais ni à la fin ni au fait que le dernier chapitre soit en couleur ! On peut dire que nous sommes gâtés !
Dans l’ensemble, j’ai passé un excellent moment avec cette suite et sa bonne dose d’action qui nous tient savamment en haleine. Quelques longueurs sur les derniers chapitres, mais j’ai apprécié aussi de pouvoir retrouver le groupe soudé. Et bien sûr, la fin m’a laissé sur ma faim. Parce que ça se termine sur un sacré cliffhanger qui donne vraiment envie d’avoir le prochain tome entre les mains.
Une bon 11e tome qui a su renouveler mon intérêt pour cette histoire. Les dessins sont toujours superbes avec un trait fin et soigné. C’est toujours un plaisir que de les admirer.

Himmel's memoir 😭 and not him paying for things in advance knowing Frieren will use them much, much later. He's always going to be a hero, even after death.
I felt so sad seeing the panel of the Holy Snow Crystal, and the seeing the Party of Heroes looking at it alongside the present with just Frieren.
FRIEREN AND HIMMEL IN THE FLOWER FIELD?!? UGHHH, MY HEART HURTS.
"You just felt happy. And that's okay. It's all right to remember, Frieren."
Macht is a pretty tough demon. I liked that even Frieren is reluctant, which is truly surprising since she's all about killing every demon who she crosses paths with. Macht only 'likes' humans because he wants to understand feelings like guilt and malice, but there's no true, meaningful intention there. I really don't like him, but I have to admit he's kind of cool.
I can't wait to see the battle that plays out in the next volume, and hopefully the party can get back to their main adventure. I do kind of have a feeling Denken might not be away from his wife for much longer....
I felt so sad seeing the panel of the Holy Snow Crystal, and the seeing the Party of Heroes looking at it alongside the present with just Frieren.

An interesting new arc, where the party reunites with Denken as he goes home, something we heard about in the previous arcs multiple times. But even more interestingly is the new villain: a demon who inhabits the land under a barrier and who has turned everything into a kind of fools gold, including would be adventurers who have tried to kill him. Frieren was defeated by him and Denken has some past with him.
If not for the filler-esk sections, where the same information is reiterated so many dang times, this would be another five star instalment. But it’s just too slow at moving things along without it feeling like it is purposefully dragging its feet. Otherwise, very cool setup and I enjoyed the flashbacks and cameos from other mages we’ve already met.

Il y a pas mal de nouvelles révélations, de questionnements sur les démons, leur fonctionnement, leur lien avec les hommes…
Les dessins sont toujours aussi superbes. J’ai pris plaisir à m’y attarder, mais pour moi, le gros plus, ça reste l’histoire, la relation entre les personnages et leur évolution, la nostalgie qui perce à travers le récit. J’adore, c’est tellement plaisant.
C’est un coup de cœur.

The best volume yet! Immense plot and character development, as well as the introduction of a new character, Macht, a war crime-enjoying demon intellectually curious about the human sensations of guilt and malice. I really love this series and the questions it calls to mind about empathy, time, and loyalty to history/elders.

I love how every character, whether they are mcs or not, get so much attention (backstory, personnality and goals) it makes for such a rich and immersive story! Even if they are there only for a chapter or multiple volumes they are such a vital part of the plot and not just accessories for Frieren, Fern and Stark

Still love this series. There isn't a lot of progress in this volume, but it appears that Frieren has a good idea of what she's up against with the demon Macht. She didn't quite share it with the rest of the class though... On to volume 10!

This volume really stands out for how beautifully the characters grow on a personal level. Their development feels natural and earned, adding emotional depth to the story without relying on big plot twists.

While this was a more action-packed entry to the series, I’m very excited about this new arc! There were plenty of quiet, meaningful moments as well, in true Frieren fashion. Another excellent volume!

Il était trop bien ce tome. Le démon je l'aime beaucoup j'ai hâte de savoir la suite de son histoire. Frieren qui accepte tout et n'importe quoi pour un grimoire bizzare ça me fera toujours rire...
