What Did You Eat Yesterday?, Volume 6

Rate this book
In this volume of discovery and acceptance, we learn that happiness depends on small constant pleasures (meals first and foremost)—and that the reason Kenji fell for Shiro has to do with an ’80s manga. As the couple’s relationship deepens, author Yoshinaga takes the slice-of-life genre to unique heights.

Japanese: よしなが ふみ

Fumi Yoshinaga (よしなが ふみ Yoshinaga Fumi, born 1971) is a Japanese manga artist known for her shōjo and shōnen-ai works.

Fumi Yoshinaga was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1971. She attended the prestigious Keio University in Tokyo.

In an interview, she said that "I want to show the people who didn't win, whose dreams didn't come true. It is not possible for everybody to get first prize. I want my readers to understand the happiness that people can get from trying hard, going through the process, and getting frustrated."

Little is known about her personal life. She mentions that her favourite operas are those by Mozart in the author's note of Solfege.

She debuted in 1994 with The Moon and the Sandals, serialized in Hanaoto magazine, but was previously a participant in comic markets.

Of Yoshinaga's many works, several have been licensed internationally. She was also selected and exhibited as one of the "Twenty Major Manga artist Who Contributed to the World of Shōjo Manga (World War II to Present)" for Professor Masami Toku's exhibition, "Shōjo Manga: Girl Power!" at CSU-Chico.

Outside of her work with Japanese publishers, she also self-publishes original doujinshi on a regular basis, most notably for Antique Bakery. Yoshinaga has also drawn fan parodies of Slam Dunk, Rose of Versailles, and Legend of Galactic Heroes.

After a mere 7 (or is it 8?) years together, Shiro is finally willing to be seen in public with his significant other in a context where people might possibly identify him as gay. Not near their home or work, of course! That would be going too far.

It's sad but realistic that he continues to fret over this, while at the same time worrying that he isn't gay enough. Partly because (again, sad but realistic) groups often inflict these standard on their members via internal pressure.

The food in this one wasn't especially interesting to me. And wouldn't you know it, the one time I actually have perilla leaf there are no recipes that call for it!

I did learn that hijiki is the same sea vegetable as namul. According to wikipedia, it is thought to be good for one's hair.

It feels much better to be thanked than being apologized to endlessly. So don't apologize anymore.
Shiro and Kenji are de facto old marrieds, and must deal with the prejudices of their neighborhood and overall society by acting like they aren't. That isn't approached heavy-handedly, but it is something that obviously and persistently hangs over their heads. Thankfully, they have a lot of support from friends and family.

Shiro's meals always look delicious and wholesome, and you see the process of his cooking, giving this story a homey vibe and making it a nice and comforting read. I look forward to coming back to it, and therefore parcel it out a bit, about 3 volumes a year, rather than marathoning.

I think this might be my favorite volume so far, mostly because you get to see Shiro's devotion to Kenji in small ways and I just love them so much. I teared up, I got the feels. This series is truly a slow burning one but I think that's what makes me love it so much. It's all about the quiet moments in the relationship.

2021: I decided in January to finally continue reading this series this year and have resolved for myself to point out one thing that I especially liked for every volume. There usually is more than one thing that I enjoy but I want to try to pick out and focus on one and see how it goes for me.

Since they spent more private time together in this volume we had a chance to learn more about their views on relationships, cheating, and other things. We see more of Shiro's struggles and the barriers he set for himself and that society sets. As a gay man, he lives in two worlds and struggles with appearing (too) gay in straight company (especially in his job because he isn't out to his colleagues) and not gay enough in gay company. We also see how he slowly is able to let himself lower his guard/barriers.
A very interesting and informative volume.

The bus schedule has turned Friday into my personal “Comics Friday.”

Still adorable. Kenji and Shiro continue to apologize to each with food; the couple celebrates Shiro’s birthday; they hang out with another gay couple (including a stereotype whose colorful bento can’t stand up to Shiro’s brown but tasty offering); Kayoko and Shiro continue to split grocery deals; the couple goes shopping together for once.

The realities of Japanese law continues to intrude. Shiro is bummed after a homeless client gets 9 nine for manslaughter despite eyewitness testimony that he was trying to help the victim. The female client who lost custody of her son due to “emotional instability” learns to be happy with occasional video letters from her child, instead of viewing him from afar at the park.

Not much to say about this volume. We got to see Shiro let go of some of his barriers between his home life and his work life, which I really appreciated. I can totally understand Shiro's hesitation that he's faced up to this point; the environment he's in really isn't conducive to a happy work-home balance. I am proud to see him come this far, however, and I'm very excited to read the next volume.

Honestly, I read this yesterday, and as yesterday was NOT a good day brain power-wise, I don't actually remember anything at all about it now. Except something about City Hunter? I remember I really liked it though, and that's what counts!

Truly wonderful. Each volume adds another layer of nuance and reflection on queer slice of life in Japan. And more meditation on comforting food!

I'd forgotten that the previous volume ended on what I thought was a cliffhanger...but I'd also forgotten that this series is not very plot-heavy...

The murder trial does come up again, but it takes four chapters to get there, and it's sort of a minor blip, with Kenji cooking Shiro a nice meal because he's a little bit down about his homeless client being sent to jail for 9 years. It's better than the 15 the prosecutor wanted! he says. And skims over the fact that there was witness testimony that their client had been trying to save the other guy, rather than actively attempting to drown him.

But since people don't really trust homeless people to tell the truth, there was no chance of this guy not going to prison.

That's...depressing. And honestly kind of weird to me that we barely see any of Shiro's job, even when there's a particularly interesting case like that going on.

This volume felt really recipe-heavy again, and I'm swinging back into thinking maybe it's just not for me. I like the coziness factor and all that, but we don't actually need every single step of cooking a meal narrated. I know that's the point of the series. But it's so...boring.

Unfortunately, I wasn't the biggest fan of the storylines in this volume either, though. There were a fair amount of discussions about cheating, which initially was kind of okay - it was Kenji feeling awful about his own jealousy, and Shiro being a good boyfriend and agreeing to not spend time alone with another attractive gay man, even if he had no intention of doing anything but listening to the guy complaining about his own boyfriend.

But then it came up again, with Kenji and Shiro both admitting to having cheated in the past. Well, at first Shiro was saying to himself that he'd take it to his grave that he had, to make Kenji not freak out, but then a few chapters later he was casually telling Kenji that he doesn't consider himself very "loyal" and that it can be perfectly alright to sleep with other people when you're in a relationship, it's just awkward when you don't talk about it and find out one person was cheating while you weren't.

I...really would've expected Kenji to have some significant insecurities about that point of view, particularly since Shiro had been saying to himself earlier that he would never talk to him about this kind of stuff. So it felt like weirdly inconsistent character choices. And in general, I just really, really, really hate infidelity, so having Shiro being that casual about it was not great. It makes me kind of anxious that with this series going on for so many volumes, it'll become a storyline in their relationship later on, too.

I might just finish out the books I already have - through Volume 10 - and then clear them off my shelf if I'm not feeling super hooked. I did like elements, like Shiro gradually becoming more comfortable with being out in public with Kenji, and Kenji's story about how he fell for Shiro at first sight was cute. But Shiro just doesn't seem nearly as into Kenji as Kenji is with him, and it's starting to bum me out a little bit.

Plus the constant recipes make my eyes glaze over, and I have to fight myself to not just skim past them.

I appreciate the cast of characters for the manga at this point and the interesting interplay we get versus Shiro and Kenji. Everyone brings something different to the table and this works well to better illustrate more of the nuances of the LGBT experience in Japan.

My reviews for this manga are pretty spare since the bits I love the most feel like spoilers should I discuss them in detail, and thus I just talk about how each volume makes me feel. And that is pretty consistent across the books, which is admirable in itself from a creative perspective.

3.5 again. I liked that Shiro became a little less uptight about certain things, but this volume seemed to be all recipes and no plot? It’s been a while since I read volume one but I’m sure it had more story than this. Anyway, it was fine, and I will look into getting the other volumes.

(Not reading vols 2-5 didn’t affect this one much so they can be read out of sequence/with gaps, if you’re wondering.)

I havent read this series in a while and decided to pick it back again.

I remember there being more plot, and some cooking ideas.

Shiro starts to come out his shell and see more of their views on relationships and cheating.

Made me hungry reading as I dream I'll make the recipes in the book but never do. I like Shiro is becoming braver in his relationship with Kenji.

I'm so glad I discovered this series now and not during my teenage anime phase because I genuinely think this is the best manga I've ever read and I would *not* have appreciated it back then.
