Court of Chains #2.5

Wrath and Patience

Rate this book
Nothing can quell the rage of a Wrath demon. Save for the orders given by a sweet, fledgling witch.

Life hasn’t been easy for Sam O’Connor. A past filled with mistakes and tragedy means she prefers hiding rather than risking malicious comments and stares. Weird and awkward as she is, being invisible is far safer than bringing attention to herself.

But despite her best efforts, danger has paid her interest. When she receives an invitation to an elusive Summit—a gathering of wicked witches and warlocks, with grim and secretive plans—she agrees to attend the event as an undercover spy for the Court of Chains. She just won’t be going alone.

Drago’s fury knows no bounds. As a greater Wrath fiend, his rage is limitless and nearly impossible to control. Pain is a sensation reserved for his victims, just as calmness is a completely foreign concept. That is until an awkward apprentice witch requires a bodyguard, and suddenly the laws of his very existence are put into question. Because under the patient instructions of Samantha O’Connor, Drago feels nothing but impossible peace.

Wrath and Patience is a dark, spellbinding story about developing confidence, finding community, and facing off against several undead dangers.

Oh, what another great entry into a wonderful series. I had my misgivings on the way into this one due to who the protagonists were, but thankfully I immediately changed my mind (like, zero time needed). This is a wonderful character-driven story that uses the fantasy elements to great effect while still remaining very grounded and realistic. I liked everything about this, no notes honestly. If I have any complaints its that I wanted more of certain things, and given that the novel is 550ish pages already that is a compliment.

The books in this series keep getting better and better. Probably because the world is well-established and populated by wonderful characters, but also the author has really found their stride. These can all be read as standalones (actually, and not just how some authors falsely claim that), but I think they work better if you read the series. THAT SAID, the characters featured in each book are weighted more towards the recent novels as opposed to the earlier ones, so while I think that you benefit from reading earlier books in the series first, I don’t think you need to begin right at the start if that’s too much for your TBR. I haven’t seen this before, and I really like this approach.

This was my favorite M/F novel in the series (so far), although I think the sapphic ones still get top billing for me.

A+, 5-Stars

Highlights:
-The protagonists together. This author has a special gift for making pairs that fit together so incredibly well and just WORK so perfectly. These novels are all character-driven stories, which is the best kind IMO.
-I love how he is so unreasonably strong, and therefore the whole world is startlingly fragile to him.
-Dragos blunt way of talking. Its good.
-The characters play unexpected roles (to me) in their relationship. I liked this, it was clever, and I wish we had seen even more of it.
-The way the protagonists affect each other, and how they play/feed off each others energy and strengths and weaknesses. Yeah, I’m basically just doubling down on my first bullet.
-The “undercover mission”. Particularly the end of it.
-Always! More! Worldbuilding! If your fantasy world isn’t growing, its shrinking.
-Last but not least in the slightest: the side characters. This is the other thing this author does exceptionally well. There are a whole cast of excellent side characters; some left over from previous novels (which means they are pre-packaged and well developed) and others are intriguing enough that they will likely get their own novel later.

I got an ARC of this book.

Yet another great addition to the court of Chains by Rawnie Sabor! (How does she keep doing this????)
For the sapphic fans, this is NOT a sapphic romance, but there are plenty of women who love women in the book, who will definitely get books down the line. We also get to meet Evie and Natalya again.

With that aside out of the way, damn did I love this book. Every couple Rawnie writes is new and different from the previous ones, regardless of gender composition. In this one we have Sam(antha) who discovers that she is a witch and is dragged into the plot, and Drago the Greater Wrath Fiend, who somehow experiences calm and peace whenever he is in Sam's vicinity, which is something supposed to be impossible.

They are both clearly in to each other from the get go, and due to their respective personalities, the romance doesn't actually have any great degree of conflict. It might actually be the fluffiest of the romances Rawnie Sabor has written so far (very much not a complaint). The growth and solidification of their romance follows and supports the two characters own arcs flawlessly, and is entirely believable, despite our two main characters both being awkward ducks. After they get to know each other they just click so well. And the growth of both of these characters is such a validating read as a neurodivergent person. We aren't fixing the things that make us awkward, but owning them and embracing that that is who we are, while finding better people to share our time with.

But now you might be wondering, this is a Rawnie Sabor novel, if the conflict isn't in the romance, where is it?

This book is a bit more plot heavy in contrast to previous books in the series. It has more plot than Kiss of Seduction, which to date was the one with the most plot. It also has quite a lot of world building, as we get a thorough introduction to the Witch/Warlock/Arcanist faction, due to Sam being invited to the yearly Summit, a recruitment/show-off conference. This time it is held by the Ressurectionists (necromancers) who never hosts, so the Court of Chains is very interested in what will be happening there. And of course drama and shenanigans ensue. For those who are a fan on Angela, we get quite a lot of time with her, as she takes Sam on as an apprentice. Drago gets involved, as a self appointed bodyguard to Sam, since she is not particularly popular in the Court due to the events in Kiss of Seduction.

And what a plot it is! This book is a real page turner, truly. I started it during the evening, thinking I would just read a handfull of chapters, blinked and suddenly I had read 16 of them and it was way past my bedtime. I finished it the next day.

Like all Rawnie Sabor books, this entry is full to the brim with a wonderful character gallery, some we already know, such as Evie, Natalya, Angela and Vex, but also at least two new future sapphic main characters. And the villain! He is such a vile villain! He is a great foil to Sam and Drago's character arcs, showing growth from them at different points during the book.

As for the kink dynamic in this book, I think a lot of people might have assumed Drago to have a different role than what he ends up having, based on what we have seen of him in other books. But the slow growth into what they end up with is so natural and makes so much sense for them as people, that I can't wait for more people to experience it.

I have so many more words and thoughts to share but this has already gotten quite long, so here is the TLDR:
Rawnie Sabor has written another tantalizing, sexy, thrilling book in her Court of Chains universe, with another fantastic couple, who is yet again my favourites. Strong characters, amazing plot, and some surprisingly fluffy romance.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 stars, the auther definitely thought about things!

I loved this book so much.

Yes, I know this book is very different from my usual reading preferences. BUT, I always make an exception for this author because their writing is so well-crafted that it deserves to be read.

After Kiss of Seduction, I didn’t hate Sam, but I wasn’t her biggest fan either. The same went for Drago, he felt like just another side character to me. Still, I wanted to give their story a chance because, so far, not a single book in this series has disappointed me. Needless to say, this one exceeded my expectations.

The universe of this series expanded even further with the introduction of witches and warlocks as MC, and I loved learning more about how the arcanist system works. Sam’s redemption arc was the highlight for me. I had so many theories as I read, each one worse than the last, but thankfully, the story didn’t go in those directions. Watching Sam grow into her confidence and navigate her new powers was incredibly satisfying. The same goes for Drago, as he learned to find peace even when Sam wasn’t by his side.

Their romance was sweet and refreshing. Usually, straight romances can feel cringe-worthy to me, but this one didn’t, it was genuinely enjoyable, even the spicy scenes.

The only thing I missed was seeing more of the side characters. As the series grows, I understand that not everyone can appear in every book, but I still found myself wishing for more of them.

Now, I can’t wait for Vex and Angela’s story in a few months. Their enemies to lovers dynamic has so much potential, and I’m already hooked on the idea. If Evie and Natalya make an appearance too, it’ll be the perfect bonus. I’ll definitely be glued to that book the moment it’s released.

Overall, as always, anything by this author is worth reading. Don’t hesitate to pick it up !

Sam O'Connor has an unfortunate past with the Court of Chains, having been duped by necessity and lies to work against Evie, the consort of Natalya, one of the Regents of the Court. When she gets an invite to attend a Summit of witch covens she immediately turns to the Evie and the Court for advice. Understandably the Court is alarmed at a group of witches meeting in Chains territory so they enlist Sam for training with Angela, the powerful witch that works for the Chains (see book 3, Green-Eyed Monster), with the intention of sending her to the Summit as a spy.

Drago is a greater fiend of Wrath who joined the Chains to learn control from Natalya. He's been receiving that to control and channel his violent power and impulses, but he never expected the peace that flows over him when he's around Sam, so he insists on escorting her to the witch Summit.

Drago has been a favourite in this series since he first appeared in Taste of Pain and I think the author has done a clever job pairing him with Sam. Sam is a bit awkward and very much an introvert, so the always=direct and devoted Drago makes a really good match. This book is also a great lead in to Vex and Angela's book (next in the series).

Oh how I love the Court of Chains series!
Rawnie Sabor has me reading straight romance and LIKING IT. That’s how good her writing is and how amazing this series is!

The two main characters of this story are so unique and loveable, I fell in love with them and didn’t even care about their genders.

I was drawn to this series because of the sapphic pairings but it turns out one of the few straight characters is the most relatable character of all for me. Sam’s the shy weird kid with a giant heart for animals. It really spoke to me as someone who’s always been labelled as the weird, nerdy, shy, lizard-obsessed girl. The way she constantly anticipated judgement and mockery made me so sad but it was very realistic and relatable too.

Sam felt so relatable and authentic, not at all a quirky not like the other girls type, which can be hard to achieve with the ”weird kid“ theme.

And oh, Drago. He’s such a sweetheart. He’s so awkward and honest and good. He takes things so literally and just wants Sam’s well being. He is so whipped. To think he was originally created to kill when all he wants to do now is to protect and love… I LOVED HIM!!! He may be a 7 foot oaf capable of crushing bones in one swift move, but inside, he’s a cutie patootie.

Most of all, regardless of sapphic or straight or whatever, reading a story where the weird girl grew confident and found her just-as-weird match was just so heartwarming. I loved this book!

Another book I'd forgotten to review! And one that makes me realise that I haven't read a book in like 2 months now :S

🪄 I really liked the world setting and the dynamics of the different supernaturals. The witch covens felt modern and fitting in a paranormal/urban fantasy way. I also like how demons struggle with the type of sin they're associated with

🪄 The FMC and MMC are stupid cute together, I loved every moment they had on page together. They also give me neurodivergent vibes in a good way

🪄 There's some very gentle femdom

4.75/5 - A greater Wrath fiend on his knees ready to worship? Sign me up! I don’t particularly like Sam, however I very much enjoyed the ride of her finding her purpose, her confidence. I paused for a day during this positive it would crush me near that 80% mark - happy to say my worries were unfounded. Rawnie Sabor can’t write characters or a story line that I’m not completely enraptured by. Taste of Pain was my least favorite and all I wanted was more ghouls. Now that I’ve read the series in full (so far) I am so incredibly satisfied.

As much as I wasn’t feeling Sam in Kiss of Seduction, she’s grown on me and grown herself. This isn’t my normal romance read but I really enjoy the Court of Chains series as a whole. Some 🧶 the villain and the showdown was just awful. His behavior was just so dumb and they made the heroes behavior match. Also, the Wrath demon was rarely actually wrathful. I know that was part of his growth but I was expecting at least one scene of righteous fury indulgence. Overall a good installment in the series and looking forward to more.

If you like Sarah Maas, You will love Rawnie Sabor

The gift in this series is the balance in every couple. They are all flawed but somehow they are also the others salvation. Even when one is “dominant” - the other has a strength, a key, a talent that makes the relationship such a joy to watch u furl. Excellent world building. Excellent series. Not formulaic - each book is unique. Highly recommend.

I love this series so much and though I started reading for the sapphic novels, this was my favorite of the Court of Chains straight pairings (gotta love a big protective dude who isn’t afraid to let his girl take control). I rooted out loud when Sam discovers her dominating side and it was so nice to see her growth. The spice was 🔥🔥🔥. It was also so great to get a decent amount of Evie/Natalya sightings and to get some previews of what Angela and Vex are like. I’m so excited to read their pairing later this month. Thank you for bringing this intense and fascinating universe to us, Rawnie!

I’M SCREAMING!!!!! NEW TOP TIER BOOK BOYFRIEND ALERT! This is by far the best couple of Rawnie Sabor’s so far, at least in my opinion. This man is an aggressive, temperamental, hotheaded, Wrath demon (literally) but turns into a calm, puppy dog cinnamon roll who worships at his knees for his woman and I am here for it!

“I’m yours. Whenever we’re together like that, I’m yours entirely. You decide what I do. How I do it. When I do it. Everything. Whatever you command, I will obey.”

If you could capture the vibe of Gomez “I would die for her, I would kill for her” Adams then Drago would be a pretty good fit. Like the devotion of these two men match so well. If you’re looking for a book where the guy hands over complete control and finds pleasure submitting and obeying to the woman well then this one is for you. Samantha (the fmc) doesn’t use the words good boy but if that was this kinda book THEN HE’D DEFINITELY EARN THEM. He’s kinda a slut for pain and basically just wants to make her happy… while ripping apart her enemies. I mean really the submission is chefs kiss because there’s something really organic about it like an actual couple just figuring things out and not going based on a contract which can happen in kink.

“I want to kiss you…Touch you. Taste you. I would worship you if you let me.” OH AND HE DOES. He worships. He adores.

“You’re so wonderful,”… “I want to feel all of you. Kiss you everywhere. You’re fucking divine.”

“I love every part of you. Every inch of you is flawless.” He kissed his way down her body. Along the soft curve of her stomach, the dips by her hips, over the silver stretch lines on her thighs. If he could treasure her like this until the end of his days, then his existence might sway towards actual perfection. “You’re the most stunning person I’ve ever met,” he whispered as his lips touched her knee, her calf, then her feet before returning to her thighs. “I’ll do anything for you. Anything you ask. Anything at all.”

IM DEAD, deceased. My romantic heart has absolutely exploded. I mean I really don’t think I’ll get over this. Like what???!!!! For some this might be too much, but for me? I was GAGGED over this passage and kicking my feet over his utter adoration. I mean he breaks his contract with the Chains to protect her! He waits for her and walks her to her car at the high rise because he knows some people don’t like her. He waits for birds to come to him for her. There’s other stuff but maybe I would be ruining it if I kept talking about them? The point is, he is a total acts of service kinda guy. And I absolutely LOVE how Drago and Samantha balanced each other. They just fit so well and bettered each other.

Okay, now I need to tone it down a notch. Samantha is great too! I really enjoyed her character. I liked seeing someone really shy and unsure of herself absolutely blossom in her confidence. I thought it was great character development. Maybe some would be annoyed at her insistence that she can never get social interactions right but I found something relatable about it and real. There’s a lot of people who feel like they can’t quite figure out socialization. I also loved how protective she was and willing to save people that others were willing to easily write off. She just saw good in everyone (almost, some characters were just plain evil), and I liked being in that headspace as a reader.

I liked the plot as well. I’ve read other books in this world and I liked the focus on witches and the magic system in this one. I thought it was a fairly original spin on witchcraft and I liked the creativity. This book is long but I didn’t feel bored reading it. I actually think it would have been nice to see a more solid resolution at the end, which likely would have extended the book.

I won’t lie though. I really wasn’t reading for the plot, so take that with a grain of salt. The characters were more my focus.

29th April 2025: 4.5★

I wasn’t Sam’s biggest fan from her appearances in the previous books but I enjoyed watching her come into her power (no pun intended lol) and really see her personality shine. It was so fun to see behind the scenes of the covens too because the witches haven’t been explored yet in the other books - I really liked the trials scenes. My only qualm is the ending dragged a little bit I was just itching for Sam or Drago to take Silas out. That leads me onto Drago my beloved 🫶🏻 He truly is the ‘best boyfriend’ that Rawnie mentioned in the acknowledgments. So so sweet he deserves the world. Another new dynamic from Rawnie that was very interesting and just worked so well. Another round of applause for the off the charts chemistry that Rawnie is able to translate so well onto the page.

(Also, sidenote - I find it so interesting seeing Evie & Natalya from a third person POV because the Natalya that we see here is the scary Chains Natalya and there isn’t a hint of the Natalya we get from Evie’s POV in their books which makes Kiss of Seduction even more intimate in my opinion.)

author really just dressed up the bad-boy-takes-off-her-glasses-and-now-she’s-pretty trope and wanted us to pretend it wasn’t that 😭

people don’t listen to the themes in this book, you can wear baggy clothes if you want; you’re not only pretty when you put on tight clothes and makeup and do your hair

love awkward Sam though, she’s not the kind of character you get to see often in books and it was beautiful to see

also there was this one very stupid silly spelling error and I had to remember this is an indie author so you might not have all the best resources and so I’d like to offer my free copy editing services. I’m being genuinely sincere here, nothing kills the flow more than a grammatical error.

Wrath is the hottest cinnamon roll

This book delves further into the universe's magic systems and politics. Samantha not only finds out magic and monsters are real but is drawn into magical intrigue that could be deadly.

Wrath joined the Court of Chains to find control, but he never expected to find a witch who embodies kindness and calm. Seriously, I love the way Wrath becomes the sweetest cinnamon roll as his relationship with Samantha develops. I love the dynamics between the couple and how they help each other become stronger in their own ways.

Love this series and can't wait for the next book

And… she’s done it again!
Rawnie Sabor has me completely hooked on this series! While I usually gravitate toward sapphic stories (which Rawnie absolutely excels at), the two non-sapphic books are equally phenomenal.

It was such a treat to hear from Sam again, a key character from Kiss of Seduction, the first book in the series. I’m especially excited to dive deeper into the stories of some of the new characters introduced here - particularly Rachel. I have a feeling there’s so much more to uncover with her, and I can’t wait!

Despite being a 2.5 in the Court of Chains series it's still a fully fledged novel, it was just "removed" from the main numbering because it is cishet and not sapphic like the main books.

I don't normally read cishet, the three books in the Courts of Chains series were the only exception so far and I really enjoyed them all so far
but "Wrath and Patience" is by far the best of those three and I'm very exciting what the future will bring with more releases

I love love love LOVE drago and samantha, both together and individually. They're my babies and my beloveds, I can only thank this incredibly talented author for the gift that was this book🥺💖 also submissive and devoted men are my favorite brand of them, what a treat!

Phenomenal, as always Rawnie your work hits right in the wounds we try to steer clear from and I had to pause and put the book down just to either contemplate the sentence I just read or to cry about it then contemplate before returning.

I loved seeing Sam grow and the redemption for herself to step into her power was beautiful.

Thank you

This was so cute. I really love this authors interpretations of the sins and how she puts pen to paper to basically satiate every readers desire.

Even though each book in this series follows the same pattern, it’s only mildly predictable with the plots still being new and fresh and interesting.
