This was a really cute high school romance perfect for lovers of the grumpy/sunshine dynamic.
I recognize that I’m not the target audience for this book, so some aspects characteristic of a YA romance/book didn’t really hit for me, but I think this would be great for older teens.
What I liked:
- I haven’t read too many contemporary stories that feature smart kids in the arts (as a former ballerina/band kid, it made my heart happy)
- The MCs didn’t feel one-dimensional (for the most part). Mia and Eli had flaws and insecurities, and were representation for what it’s like to live with anxiety and abusive family situations. They were a pretty big contrast to each other, but I liked that Mia’s life wasn’t perfect just because she had a seemingly “perfect life,” nor did Eli give up on his dreams just because he had a much less ideal one. I really like when books don't shy away from hard topics and this one handled them really well.
- Eli was a green flag walking in so many ways. Again, he’s definitely not perfect, but I think readers will love how much he loves Mia.
What I didn’t like:
- I had a hard time with the pacing and jumping between the dual POVs — we had huge time jumps, which wouldn’t necessarily be bad, but we would get detailed run-downs of certain events, only to switch POVs suddenly and get a few-sentence rundown of what happened later. It was hard to really care about what was happening when we hardly got to experience things from the current POV characters’ point of view. Also, the story being stretched out over the whole school year didn’t feel super realistic based on how the characters acted. It felt like things were being stretched out just to fit the desired timeline.
- Sometimes the characters acted in confusing ways — obviously humans are complex and inconsistent at times, which can definitely make stories interesting, but in this case I felt like I would be told one thing then be shown another over and over, which made for a bit of frustrating time.
- Don’t hate me, but the nicknames — I didn’t fully get them, but that’s okay, lol
Overall, I think this a really cute, wholesome read perfect for teens and anyone who loves YA romance.
🌶: just kisses and tension; characters think about how attractive each other is
