Seldom Dreaming is a collection of poems and short stories by Leila Huss, written between the ages of 9 and 14. Leila Huss is 16 years old and lives in Georgia with her family. This is her first book.
Leila Huss is a tremendously gifted writer. Her poems resonate with questions about the real world and the worlds we create in our minds. “A light upon the window gleams” sounds like a prophecy from a fantasy novel, but it could also be about taking chances on your dreams. The rhythms and rhyme schemes are very pleasing in this poem and others, and although it feels like some of the poems could continue, they have satisfying conclusions. Many of her poems deal with fears and acceptance, and they clearly reflect a love of space and nature. I enjoyed the short stories mixed in with the poems. One day, Miss Huss, I want to know more about “The Abandoned”. Why did Minerva make the choices that she did? This will keep me up at night. I would recommend this book for lovers of poetry and middle/high school teachers. Huss has a writer’s voice that will pull young readers in as well as inspire a new generation of poets. It is a great first book, and I can’t wait to read more from her.
I cannot imagine putting myself out there like this. Like, "Here are all these incredibly personal things I wrote during some of my most vulnerable years. Have at, world." Simply beautiful.💛
⭐Fav stanza: The angel and I talk not of the demon but it's the one calling the shots and the demon and I talk not of the angel but she's the one playing the lots.
