This book tells the story of an Idaho teen growing to understand her gender dysphoria and the process of coming out to her immediate family, and her broader family. It also details her family sharing her story with their friends and with their church family, with whom they ultimately severed ties. It is a story of a young woman coming into her own, finding herself and becoming a voice for transgender kids not only in Idaho, but nationwide. It is ultimately a story of a family growing stronger through conflict and standing up to outside forces that are set on disrupting their normal, peaceful lives in Idaho's capital city of Boise. A must read for families with transgender kids, and anyone seeking to undertand this issue beyond the political soundbites.
Written with compassion, honesty, and truth. The story of an Idaho family, who, under all circumstances, are determined to help their daughter and all other transgender find acceptance and laws that will help them to become healthy and accepted citizens. A must read to better understand the world of transgenders.
Stumbled upon this book after following Michael on Threads. My husband used to be in the Navy, so we have lived all over the US. I can say, of all the places we have lived, Idaho is the most hateful. Eve sounds like such a delightful young woman with a bright future ahead of her. I hope we can survive this presidency and get back on track with our march toward progress. Beautiful story. Well written. Very emotional. Lovely family.
Well done, Devitts and Heathcock. I learned some things from reading this book, and isn't that what books are for? To shine a light into places we might otherwise miss? Hang onto each other Devitts. We are facing rocky times--all of us are, though many of us haven't yet figured that out.
One of the most important first-hand accounts of the pure vitriol that is spewed towards families of trans youth. Michael and Angie Devitt do an incredible job of putting you in their shoes as parents of a transgender daughter. Not only is it a heartwarming story of the lengths parents will go to in order to protect their children, but it is also an expose on the rigging of public discourse by the GOP within Idaho.
