Rate this book
ONE WORLD UNDER DOOM! Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme - then disappeared behind Latveria's closed borders. For most, there's enough going on in the world that Doom's absence is not a priority, and some time without him feels like a blessing. Only a few recognize it for what it truly was...the calm before the storm. It is a storm that has now arrived. The world has woken up to a new Doctor Doom, Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World - the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth's leaders seem to be going along with this. Luckily, whether it's mind control or Doombots, whatever's affecting them hasn't affected Earth's heroes - and so they quickly form a strike team to stop Doom's machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom? Marvel's biggest and most shocking event ever begins right here with THE RISE OF EMPEROR DOOM #1.

Hi, I'm Ryan! I was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in 1980 and since then have written several books. You can read my Wikipedia page for more, or check out my author site at RyanNorth.ca!

I'm the author of the webcomic Dinosaur Comics (that's the comic where the pictures don't change but the words do, it's better than it sounds and I've also done crazy things like turn Shakespeare into a choose-your-own-path adventure, write a comic for Marvel about a girl with all the powers of a squirrel, or mess up walking my dog so badly it made the news.

I'm working on more stuff as we speak, hopefully it's good

I love Ryan North's science fiction-focused run on Fantastic Four, it's smart and full of heart. Now North has gotten to write a Marvel crossover event focused on Dr. Doom successfully taking over the world, which should be a great idea.

There's a little bit of real-world metaphors there about how the people support dictatorships (not that Doom's politics are quite populist Maga, but I get it). And the quality of the art is excellent in this opening issue.

Also, frankly, I like this a lot more than the previous Avengers crossover about vampires which ended in Doom becoming Sorcerer Supreme. Far as I'm concerned the only good thing about Blood Hunt was leading to this.

However, I'm worried that the crossover as whole isn't going to turn out to be satisfying. It's one of those editorial control things when you need to read a million tie-in books to follow what's going on, and I only intend to read the Fantastic Four by North--this chapters have been great by the way.

We shall see how it ends up, last I checked Doom was saving the world in a battle with Dormammu which wasn't satisfying because of the above issues, but I do have to say this is a good start. Issue # 1 gets 4/5 stars from me.

A really solid first issue! I adore RB Silva's art and the way Ryan North writes Doom is impeccable! Of course this is the first part of a nine issue story so naturally it was mostly laying the groundworks, but the groundworks for this story are amazing! A great read for any long bus journeys thats for sure, in my opinion at least! See you guys for issue 2 <3

“‘Two peaceful nations will not choose to go to war with one another,’ you tell yourselves. As if repetition makes it true. Yet even a superficial glance at history proves it: government will not save you.
‘But no two countries colonized by the same fast food franchises have ever attacked each other,’ you plead. And this is equally untrue: capitalism will not, cannot, save you.”

I can’t believe Ryan North wrote this, probably months ago, and it fits perfectly with the times of today 🥴

Good on Doom for killing Nazis with his T-Rex counterpart

Also! Amazing powers Sue, you always continue to impress me you invisible goddess you!

Well, I certainly hadn't been expecting to READ A FREAKING LITANY OF CURRENT EVENTS when I picked up this comic, Ryan!

That said, I look forward to seeing where we go with this story. I mean, who can resist Doom on a dinosaur that looks just like him? WHO?

Gorgeous art and a story that immediatly sucked me in. Doom is such a great character when written well and in this first issue North nailed it. The base plotline is simple but the delivery is great. I can't wait to see how our heroes figure this out.

Silva.

I love Ryan North's work on Fantastic Four and am intrigued by the premise of 'Doctor Doom, Sorcerer Supreme', but people were being serious when they said this will go on for nine months???

I haven't read a Marvel or DC event in 'real-time' for a while, usually just after-the-fact. As we all know, event books can be all-timers, but they often have the maximalist stench of being a cash-grab. In this instance... the cinematic synergy of RDJ Doom and the upcoming FF film.

That being said, I've seen some fun stuff is solicited, I am a fan of the author and the character, I'll give it a go. But #1 didn't really hook me or provide any 'wow' moments just yet.

I really strong start to the story. Seeing Dr Doom play all with his scheme and using other’s actions to further his own. Shows she cunning and ruthlessness. I loved seeing everyone trying to play catch up to actions already set in motion. It really highlighted the essence of Doom’s character that makes you understand what he is doing is for the good but not how it is being implemented. In other news, I loved the creative use of powers of some super heroes such as Invisible Woman. The action scenes were vibrant and engaging and loved the use of scope in certain panels. Excited for what’s coming next in the story.

Nothing really new here. The idea of the hyper intelligent superbeign/villain that turns his/her intellectual gifts to "save" humanity has been explored quite a lot ago, and in much concise and better ways. Doom's turn was highly overdue, even more when Reed Richards has been given the opportunity before. The quirk here is Doom being the sorcerer supreme also in a turn of events that was quite predictable. However, there is a lot of nostalgic flavor in the way of telling the story that is compelling.

Not a big fan of what they did to my boy Helmut, but at least the writing wasn't complete trash. North does a fairly decent job building Doom as a complicated antagonist...I just wonder what he's trying to say here....The self-proclaimed heroes are the bad guys? I like it...Just because someone douses themselves in virtue and righteousness doesn't automatically make them the "good guys." You see how this works? I really, REALLY wonder what he's getting at...(heh heh).

Oh, and the art is INCREDIBLE.

This is a continuation of three storylines: Super-Villain Team #14/The Champions #16, Emperor Doom (Marvel Graphic Novel #27) and Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment (Marvel Graphic Novel). WHEW! Anyway a great concept - the 'good' doctor becomes Sorcerer Supreme! Check this book out before we are introduced to the 'Doomquake' about to hit the MCU!

I read North’s book about how to take over the world. This is straight out of it. Perfect. Doom has schemes within plans and is ready for everything. The only way to stop him is to get his greatest enemy on their side. Doom.

Very entertaining issue with a lot of intellectual premise behind it. Was actually rooting for Doom at the start until layers of deception were revealed but the appearance of another character/variant near the end makes Doom a pretty formidable villain.

only ryan north could get me excited for a nine-month long marvel crossover event. this was so much stupid fun, i can't wait to see what happens next. and seeing doreen and nancy again, being written by mr. north himself, was like a warm hug from an old friend. HAIL DOOM!

Doom is out here being a great leader and the heroes are acting pretty petty about it. I know he probably has something up his sleeve but so far he's doing a lot better than what we have in real life.

this was really interesting. Dr. Doom becomes not only sorcerer supreme, but also emperor of the entire world. his laws seem good no wars, and universal health care, but the heroes know doom better than that.

The story is great. I liked the way the authors made the reader sort of agree(?) with the supposed villain over things like free health care, education, anti-war agendas etc. I thought there were too many useless characters throughout it though.. who really cares about squirrel girl ?

Dr. Doom is the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth and has declared himself ruler. The Marvel Heroes are in for a battle they may not win because how do you defeat Doom?

Just how many world broadcast interruptions are enough before the people themselves start revolting over a wasted day?
