But he knows Blackthorn won’t come quietly. Surrounded by the men Church once called brothers, he’ll be forced to call on all of his skills and experience if he hopes to right the wrongs of his past, and finally finish what he started all those years ago. Morgan Greene grew up in Wales, and works a copywriter, editor, and author. Morgan studied Creative Writing and English Literature at Swansea University with a focus on narrative structure and theory, and published the first crime novel in the Jamie Johansson series in 2020. Since its release, the series has gone on to reach bestseller status, with Detective Jamie Johansson quickly becoming a reader favourite.
The series blends classic Scandi-noir elements with modern and cinematic thriller writing to create a unique style that adds to the emerging Brit-noir genre. Jamie has many novels ahead of her, but Morgan is also working on a variety of other projects across crime, thriller, and mystery and plans to publish plenty more in 2022 and beyond.
A long-time fan of Morgan Greene, I thought I ought to expand my horizons with this series debut. Solomon Church is nothing like Greene's Jamie Johansson, which permits me to see some of the other perspectives the author has to offer. This debut sets the scene and puts the reader in the middle of the mess that is Church's life. A former member of the British SAS, Church was hired to look into an African dictator's use of minerals that are important to the British Government. After overthrowing the warlord, the team's leader seeks to fill the void. When members of Church's own team turned on him, he was thought dead, but resurfaced a decade later. Armed and with a need to set the record straight, Church has a list of men who need exterminating. Greene sets a different tone than I am used to seeing, but this piece kept me hooked until the final page!
During a career with Britain's SAS, Solomon Church joined a team whose sole purpose was to investigate a warlord in the Democratic Republic of the Congo whose power included mineral rights the British Government needed for various uses. The things Church saw could fill a book, but he remained mum on much that was going on. However, things went sideways after deposing the African dictator, as power was concentrated and the team's leader, Walter Blackthorn sought to fill the void. Church refused to accept corrupt bribes and was targeted to silence him, which led to a battle and many presumed that Solomon Church was dead. Which is just how Church wanted it.
After living off the grid for a decade, Solomon Church is back and ready for revenge. Sir Walter Blackthorn is now making a play for the Prime Minister's Office and cannot be allowed to gain international power. Church re-emerges to make things right, no matter what it takes. It will require him to reveal that he is not dead and make sure to share what actually happened in a small African region ten years before. But, with power comes a need to keep it, so there is a need to plug the Church leak once more, this time for good. This is where his connection with an INTERPOL official could come in handy.
Racing to get to the man who tried to kill him, Church does everything he can to inch forward, making sure there is nothing in his way. However, covert action is the name of the game and there is little that Church can do without tipping his hand. There is a need for justice, but it might cost Solomon Church everything simply to make it right and keep someone unworthy of the position from attaining 10 Downing Street, especially as his illegal activities have expanded into other horrid realms. Greene delivers a great debut and has me eager to see how things progress in the next novel.
Morgan Greene has always done well to pull the reader in with his writing and laying out wonderful ideas. This is another of those novels, though its difference from Jamie Johansson forced me to shift gears, which can be a good thing. Solomon Church could not be more different, as the reader discovers his nuances in the opening chapters of the narrative. Told in alternating chapters that explore past and present, the reader learns much from these two time periods, as the pieces come together with ease. Church is a well-developed character whose past and present create the man he is today. Others make their impact and flavour the story well, while keeping things vague for the time being. Plot points work well in a recipe well-known for readers of revenge thrillers. Solomon Church is able to surprise the reader with his antics and Greene knows how to shape him to keep the tension high. I am eager to see where things are headed from here and how Church will impress once more.
Kudos, Mr. Greene, for finding new ways to entertain with this series debut.
Having read Morgan Greene's Jamie Johansson series, I was familiar with Solomon Church and found him to be such an interesting and mysterious character that I couldn't wait to read his series!
This book delves into the past of Church and we are transported back to his mission in the DRC ten years ago. His team double-crossed him and left him for dead and he's spent the past ten years living as a ghost.
I really enjoyed this book and the different elements that Greene conveys through his writing. Solomon is such an intriguing character and I loved seeing different sides of his persona. He very loyal and honourabl to those he loves and he is a man who grapples with what it means to be a good man. I liked how the story kept switching from the past to the present and these two viewpoints added such depth to the story.
The action scenes had me on the edge of my seat and I really felt that I was watching the scenes played out on the big screen. The writing was so tense at times that I just couldn't put the book down. It is evident that Greene has put a lot of work and effort into researching this book and he does a wonderful job of addressing some hard hitting themes in the book.
Morgan Greene is one of my favourite authors and The Exile is such a fantastic military thriller. I'm looking forward to continuing this series and seeing how Church's character develops and his life unfolds!
P.S I also love how at the end of every book Morgan shares his thoughts on the story and the next one in the series. I've not seen many authors do this as intently as Morgan and I always love reading his thoughts and aspirations at the end of every book. As a first installment in a brand new series, this one is definetly not to be missed!
Good character development. Not for the squeamish. Obvious British author with the usage of certain words. Irritating frequent switching from the present to a decade or so earlier. Questionable moral that illegal violence can be justified.
I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read by this author and this one’s no different. The first in a new series featuring Solomon Church, who regular readers of this author will recognise from the Jamie Johansson series of books. This introductory book to the series explains why Church went into exile and what 10 years later brought him back out again. Told in dual timeline this is a brutal story and not one for the squeamish as the author tells this former SAS soldiers story.
Briefly, 10 years ago Church was one of a team of former SAS soldiers hired to protect a British man who had travelled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo where a warlord has virtually and enslaved the town Maroua to extract the precious cobalt. Their aim was to kill the warlord, but the tables were turned on Church and two of us colleagues. 10 years later the British man is standing as a candidate for Prime Minister. There’s only one way to stop him and that’s to prove his complicity with the tyrannical regime in the DRC.
As always with this authors books, it’s an action packed, fast paced read with a lot of violence. I love that Julia Halberg from the Jamie Johansson books also made an appearance, it gave more insight into her background as well. A dark and dangerous story with Church and his two friends out for revenge and you don’t want to stand in their way. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series.
After encountering Solomon Church in a book in the excellent Jamie Johansson series, I was really excited to hear that he was going to have his own series. This has certainly lived up to all my expectations.
The story is told across two timelines. One involves events ten years before in the Democratic Republic of the Congo involving cobalt mines, unsavoury labour practices and an English businessman eager to get involved in this business. Solomon is part of a group of ex-SAS soldiers who are hired to protect the businessman. Things spiral out of control there and this brings us to the present day when Solomon and Mitch set out to find their old colleague who has set out to prove the businessman is not as clean-cut as he makes himself out to be, especially when he is making a big political move. With a group of men out to take out Solomon and Mitch, you can be sure that they will go down fighting.
This was brilliant. It's not just action-packed. I loved how events in the DRC were portrayed. For all his hard man actions, I liked seeing Solomon's softer protective side when it comes to his family. The link to Hallberg from the Jamie books was nicely done. This is a great start to a series that definitely leaves me wanting to read more.
Having read a number of the wonderful Jamie Johansson series, I was intrigued and delighted to be offered a chance to read this first book in a new series. As always, the author provides great character progression, well researched and believable storylines and superb writing. The pace is fast with lots of action and it provides a great read. I cannot explain it but there just felt to me like something was missing, but I cannot put my finger on it. Think of seasoning missing from a meal that still provides you with something great but you don't realise at the time that a little salt would have taken it to another level. Don't let that put you off though, as if you are into action books you will really enjoy this one. Many thanks to the author for providing me with an electronic advanced copy of the book in return for an honest and unbiased review. The book will be published on the 28th March in e-book format
Morgan Greene delivers a masterful thriller with an exploration of a fan favourite character, Solomon Church, a gripping, well-paced, and meticulously crafted novel that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.
I found the story intense, layered with suspense, and unfolds in a way that feels both unpredictable and expertly thought out.
I liked the pacing—never too fast to lose depth, yet never dragging. The plot keeps you engaged, and the characters are compelling, making it easy to invest in their journey. Every twist and revelation feels earned, adding to the overall tension and excitement.
As the first in the Solomon Church series, this book sets a high bar, leaving me eager for more. If you love smart, well-constructed thrillers with an edge, The exile is a must-read, especially if you love Morgans other books! . I can’t wait to see where Morgan takes this series next!
This is Morgan Greene writing when he's in rock hard macho man mode with all guns blazing in an SAS and post-SAS thriller. Solomon Church has now been granted his very own series and in this first outing the action - which is brutal and nonstop - takes place in two different time frames: ten years ago and the present day. The plot involves a dodgy cobalt mine owner in the Democratic Republic of the Congo; an even dodgier British politician (an easily believable character!); a female undercover journalist with morals (a rare thing indeed!); and a bunch of trigger happy mercenaries. At times it is hard to know if Solomon Church is still on the side of the angels or just as gung ho as his mates - but atleast he's got a bit of loyalty and a few remaining morals when required. Anyone looking for a fast and furious read - look no further you have found it.
Solomon Church is dead (or presumed so) and in exile just existing. On a mission for the British SAS in the corrupt Dem Rep of the Congo along with Sir Blackthorn, Solomon and part of his team are betrayed by the other half of his team and Sir B. All for money of course.
Sol & a few of his mates died (but not really) in order to keep their families safe from retaliation. Fast forward years, and Sir B is running for Prime Minister of England. A fellow mate can't stand the thought and heads back to DRC alone to get proof against Blackthorn. His capture puts Sol and the others at risk causing them to head back to rescue his friend and end Blackthorn and his former corrupt mates.
Lots of back & forth between past & present which is distracting.
In this book he gives Solomon Church his own book. It gives two perspectives - looking at the job which made him go into exile & the related events which lead him to come out of exile ten years later.
The book starts slowly but cranks up the tension in both perspectives, faster in the current day, before leading to the finale where the injustices of the past come head to head with present.
The two strands run well together and whilst there are hints of the old storyline in the present day one it’s not enough to spoil the read or lessen the crack up,Intension/thrill.
I enjoyed reading Solomon again and his friends and look forward to meeting them again in the next book.
I was given an advanced copy of the book to provide an honest review.
I have read all the Jamie Johansen books and came across the character Solomon Church in the last Jamie Johansen book. I was excited when Morgan announced he was writing a new series with Solomon as the main character. The book did not disappoint was one I could not put down until I finished it. Well written exciting and kept you guessing. I loved how it jumped from present day to the past. I received an advance reading copy but will quite happily pay for anything Morgan Greene writes. Loved the new characters and also that Julia Halberg from the Jamie books made an appearance. Another series I cant wait for the next book. I don't want to spoil it for anybody by talking about the plot. Just know that if you decide to read it, you have made an excellent choice.
This is my first book by this author. I’m not really a fan of military fiction but the themes here grabbed me from the start. Solomon is a soldier, or ex-SAS, but the plot was more about revenge, and redemption. The chapters alternate between the present and 10 yrs ago and told in the first person. The first half dragged a bit as it set up the betrayal and the reason for revenge. The plot speeds up around 60%. There’s intense action and twists. And yes, there’s violence, and gore and killing. The dialog is short and clipped. Solomon is a man of few words. The ending seemed a little rushed and a little bit of a let down once he confronted the villain. I loved the supporting characters and hope to see more of them in future books.
A fast paced thriller with a (personal) sense of justice... The novel is so full of tension building up with each page that I could only relax at the very end! Indeed, no unnecessary chit chat. The novel is entirely focused on the storyline and plot which is brilliant. I enjoyed it a lot even though there was a bit too much killing for me! I like Church's integrity and his keen sense of justice, though. I also found it fascinating to read about all the strategies, planning involved in the attacks as well as the discipline. A powerful first book about Church I thoroughly enjoyed! Highly recommended! Thank you so much, Morgan, for sending me an ARC of your new thriller.
I'm a big fan of Morgan Greene's Jamie Johansson series so had to read this one. Solomon Church is a character that was introduced in book 12 of the Jamie Johansson series. He was hired to help Jamie look after a teenage girl that was being hunted. Church's character was a bit mysterious, but we finally get to learn more about Church now that he has his own series.
Each chapter alternates between the past (10 years ago) and the present day. Every chapter is packed full of action and I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. The whole book is fast paced and it had me reading all night wanting to find out how it ends.
Many thanks to Morgan for the advanced reader copy of this book.
After meeting Solomon Church in a previous book by Morgan I was delighted to see that he was getting his own series and I was really intrigued to see how this would be written.
The Exile is the first book of this series and is action packed from beginning to end and I most certainly wasn't disappointed by it.
The story is extremely well written and is very powerful in parts. I really enjoyed learning more about Church's back story too. I am now impatiently awaiting the next installment to see what happens next.
This book is such an exciting thriller and Morgan Greene is an excellent author. I have read all of his books in the Jamie Johansson series in which Solomon Church makes his appearance. It’s good to see him appear as the main character in a series of his own and have his background explored more deeply. It’s such an all absorbing story that I had to read it in one sitting, not finishing until after 1am! Morgan Greene is my favourite author right now and I can’t wait for the next book in the series, The Fury, to be released. This book is a must read and I highly recommend it.
After being introduced to Solomon Church in the Jamie Johansson series (which is fantastic if you haven't read them) I was interested to read more about Solomon Church. I was unsure because he isn't a cop but a Special Forces Op kind of guy but I definitely was completely pulled into this book. The characters are great, lots of action and subterfuge, I'm totally going to continue with this series and see what other trouble Solomon, Mitch and Foster can get into. I hope to see Jamie show up at some point. Great read Morgan!!
Follow Solomon Church in this back and forth ten year journey of redemption against his former brothers in arms and the evil business mogul who corrupted them. Now he wants to become Prime Minister of Great Britain and Solomon Church can't let that happen. Lots fast paced action and surprises here that gets better until its over leaves you wanting more. I don't want to reveal anything but once halfway through it I couldn't put it down. That's why 5 stars.
An excellent military thriller which follows Solomon Church, an ex-SAS operative, splitting the action between a mission 10 years prior in the Democratic Republic of Congo as part of an SAS unit shadowing a wealthy British MP and in the current day when he rejoins members of that team to right certain wrongs from the earlier mission.
The book touches on real world issues of slave labour, human trafficking and the people who are willing to exploit the weakest for money and power. The action scenes are well written and the plot clever.
Loved the character, Solomon Church, when he appeared in the Jamie Johansen .book so was pleased to hear he was getting his own series.
It certainly didn't disappoint. This book is everything you want with its complex, and flawed, characters, fast paced and full of excitement that will keep you reading late into the night just to see what happens next.
An excellent new character from the Mogan Green stable.
Following Solomon Church through the twists and turns of his journey in The Exile proved to be a real page turning exercise. It was difficult to put my Kindle down. The story revolves around a strong man, a leader, and his fight against the evils of the modern world. I'm looking forward to his next foray into danger, uncertainty and Solomon's belief in getting the right thing, in his own way.
A superior military thriller with a solid believable story arc , this is the first Church book of four and thoroughly enjoyable. The back story is both believable and based on reality and the action sequences have the ring of authenticity.ex military Church hiding for 10 years after a botched op in the DRC and a duplicitous villain who now is running for Prime Minister, the story swaps between now and then and loses none of its excitement. Highly recommended.
What an amazing book. Right up there with Jamie I really liked the back story which integrated so well with the present day story. I knew Solomon appeared in a Jamie book and wondered all the way through how they connected and then came the lightbulb moment. Very clever, a great ending Well done. Here's to more Solomon Frank Langley
Love this book, church was one of my favourite characters in the Jamie Johanssen series so I was excited his story got its own book. And what a story, brilliantly written, great characters and lots of action. I have read all of Morgan Greenes books and I cannot wait for more.
Thank you Morgan, once again you never fail to deliver, so loved the getting to know where Church came from, I found the switching into different episodes from his life exciting, captivating and enlightening to the despots in the world. Also where Julie Hallberg materialised, so giving an insight into the connection with Jamie perhaps?
I wanted to love this book. I love military fiction and am a big fan of Jack Reacher stories by Lee Child and Spider Shepherd books by Stephen Leather, both of which are waaay superior to this book. Gave up on this one. Way too long and very boring. Jumping back and forth between present day and 10 years ago was frustrating. I usually love this author but I hated this book - sorry!
This is a fast-paced espionage thriller centered on Solomon Church, a seasoned British intelligence agent haunted by his past. When a covert mission unravels and leaves him disgraced and in hiding, Church becomes “the exile,” living off the grid and trying to stay one step ahead of those who want him silenced. But when a deadly conspiracy surfaces, one that ties back to his own fallen operation, he’s forced to return to the dangerous world he left behind. As Church navigates deception, shifting loyalties, and brutal truths, the novel explores the cost of duty, the weight of betrayal, and what it truly means to seek redemption.
Decent read, though felt a bit choppy. Every chapter goes back and forth from 10 years past to the present. This made it difficult to follow. So really there were two stories in one but they do come together nicely at the end. A lot of action, mystery, and intrigue. Good character development. A good story overall, but the writing style is a bit different. One that I likely won't rush out to read more of in the series.
This book combines so many of my favorite things: mystery, action and great one liners. I loved this character from the Jamie series and glad to get to know him better. On to book 2!
