The year is 1880, and people have gone missing in the Congo. Major Afonso Ferreira has been tasked with leading an expedition into uncharted territory for Portugal. They find a trail of death and whispers of strange creatures unlike anything ever seen before, yet they still push on. Ferreira is determined to complete the mission he was given, but at what cost will this mindset come to?
I will admit, the premise is an interesting one. I'm surprised that an adventure story set when the world was taking advantage of Africa and finding prehistoric animals hasn't been done before, and Henrique Gandum crafts a compelling story with this idea. What makes this more unique is that he and Duarte look at animals from cryptozoology when designing the prehistoric animals. The use of obscure and famous cryptids helps flesh out the setting.
The story is essentially only starting, and the characters already face problems. While at times it can be hard to understand the motives, this helps make things morally complex as characters are forced to make choices that can make the difference between life and death. This story does set the stage for some interesting character arcs.
The art style is amazing. The animals are well-detailed, and the background feels alive, as if it's about to swallow our characters whole. The models of both the humans and the cryptids are excellent in design and carry the same feel that someone would expect from animation aimed at adults. Overall, this is a comic I will be more than happy to support again.
That being said, there are some things to be made aware of. There is plenty of violence, with panels depicting blood and gore. People are killed, and in some cases we see the bodies in a state of decomposition, which may disturb some readers. There's one use of the s-word, two uses of the d-word, and two uses of the f-bomb. There are scenes with spiders that may disturb some viewers.
