I enjoyed this in a similar way to Tryst Six Venom—the relationship definitely has its toxic moments, but it’s a romance between the goddess of the underworld and a mortal she literally snatched from the earth. A bit of toxicity is kind of expected.
The writing was smooth, and the spicy scenes? Absolutely top-tier. I especially liked how Grace brought out Cora’s humanity and softer sides—it added real depth to their dynamic.
My only gripe was the ending (or lack thereof). It felt abrupt and left me wanting more closure.
Still, overall, it was a spicy and engaging read!

Sapphic Hades/Persephone with heaps of feminine rage?? SIGN ME TF UP.
Grace’s abusive husband Sean thinks he can trick the goddess of the underworld by giving Grace’s soul in exchange for his own when he makes a deal with her. This obviously blows up in his face. What happens next is an absolutely steamy and kink filled affair between Grace & Lady Cora. Lady Cora aids Grace in healing and also providing her the tools and space she needs to torture her husband in the underworld (so romantic tbh). Grace’s journey to healing from the awful things her husband did to her was incredibly empowering to read. Additionally, the spice in this was SCORCHING, the way the dom/sub dynamic is written is *chefs kiss*. Overall, this was stellar and I definitely want to read more of Heather’s books now!

Well, you can't trick Lady Cora (the Hades of the Underworld)...she sees all! Lady Cora helps Grace with some "sexual healing" and empowers her to sow revenge on Sean.
This book is perfect for people who enjoy loads of spice in their fantasy...and this is a touch on the dark side, so please check those trigger warnings. I will say that this book was fantastic in terms of plot and spice and how well the plot/spice was written, but it's probably more on me for not enjoying reading about the BDSM lifestyle.

I always feel excited when chosen to be an ARC reader for this author. This time was no different. Though, I was slightly surprised by how different the book was in some ways from her other works! For me, it had more of an element of horror in it compared to her first novel. That novel and the connected books, while violent at times, were definitely in line with what can be found in some other high fantasy novels. This one had me going from blushing to gasping at times. Showing the range this author has across all of their works.
If you have ever humored dark thoughts about those who did you wrong; this is the book for you. Very vengeful. Very sapphic. Very spicy.

I see the vision for this book it read easily and I like the woman empowerment.
A big part for enjoying books for me is the development between characters and I didn’t really believe it in this story. I also struggled with the degradation and push to violence. I think the author wanted to show you two sides of a coin but I didn’t feel the improvement for our mc.
If you do like those elements you’ll have a great time reading this. It is a dark romance after all and I liked reading about woman for a change.

The pet names in this book alone make me want to read again. I mean DAFFODIL. Can someone call me that while railing me?? I mean come on. 😂.
Anyways, truly if Heather Nix has no fans, I will be 💀. This is an author that I will read anything she writes. Each book of hers is so different but sooo good and this was no exception. You hardly ever see sapphic dark romance and I am here for it! The only thing I would have changed was if there was a sequel. Haha.
I couldn’t get enough of this relationship between Cora and Grace and the path that they had to get to to reach their HEA. The push/pull, emotions, and spice were all chefs 💋. 10/10 would repeat read this one.

The ending was wild. I was expecting a little more.
One thing I would have really appreciated with this book was if we got the POV of Cora and Grace.
I felt like only having the POV of Grace wasn't enough.
This book was heavy.
A lot of BDSM aspects. Saint Andrews Cross, flogging, whipping, submission, sub space, pain play (slapping), breath play, spitting, anal play, worship. Cora had moments of being Lady Cora and Your Highness. When she was Your Highness she was more brutal. Having Grace become unconscious due to not being able to breath.
A physical, emotional, and sexual abusive relationship between Grace and her ex. He did some atrocious things. All discussed.
Murder and Torture. Some gaslighting.
Unintentional or unknowingly committing suicide.
Held captive.
This book just had a lot. I wouldn't say this book is all that sweet.
The thing with Anna was never resolved.
Grace and her sized is mentioned frequently. Plus size rep.
I don't know how to feel about this book to be honest. I did finish it. I don't know.

I LOVED this novel. Absolute home-run material. I love the Hades and Persephone tale and will always read any re-imagining that I come across, especially if its sapphic (which it absolutely should be!! Female Hades just makes SENSE!). Unfortunately, all of the ones I have found prior to this were disappointing. I am SO glad that I never give up though, because now I found this one and it was delightful.
This novel puts the “dark” in “dark romance” (although for some non-standard reasons). Ill consider it as another entry in the “Unofficial Good For Her Literary Universe”. It was a delightful mix of a captive romance, a revenge story, and a dose of mythology-lite. Its just good. The characters are compelling and complex, the writing is high quality, and the spicy bits are spicy.

This story brought the feels in all of the beautiful, raw, and emotionally complex aspects, the darkness, the healing the reclaiming, and the out of this world chemistry!
And Good Goddess! The pacing of the plot was
perfect, pulling me into the story immediately. I felt the sorrow and rage in the flashbacks of Grace's life, loved her evolution, and absolutely devoured every moment of their time, and relationship development in the underworld.
These are just a few moments in this story that I loved in the chaos of my dozens of highlights and annotations!

Holy shit.
I cannot think of a better book to have been reading while the United States set itself on fire.
If you have rage. If you have hurt. If you have worry. If you have a feeling of hopelessness. Let this book help you turn those things into resolve. We are stronger than we realize in these moments and Heather captures that both horrifically and beautifully in Currency in Flesh.
This book is not for the faint of heart but it gave me hope and a sense of peace that I was not expecting. It was beautifully written and had me scrambling to read what happened next the whole time. I am NOT a dark romance reader by trade and often times am put off by gratuitous violence but there is something about this story and how Grace finds herself in these pages that transcends the gore depicted within. I could not put it down and I will remember this book as what got me through one of the darkest times in my recent memory.
It was also hot, let’s get that right. You want fisting Squinting? Fingering? Oral? Throat fucking? Boot licking? Breath play? Impact play? Bondage? More? Currency in Flesh is for you. Thank you Heather for giving it to us.

This is dark and full of lusty forbidden wants and I ate it up. Cora and Grace balance each other out in a very twisted but sweet way.

I get what this book is trying to do, to show the empowerment of a DV survivor after being dragged to the Underworld after her husband makes a stupid decision while also finding love again. I liked that part.
But in my opinion, her situation doesn't actually change much, she goes from one abuser to another.... The book tries to play it as if she consented to it but she was dragged to the Underworld.
Lady Cora gropes her in the first chapter and later denies her a safe word and aftercare because she wasn't in the Underworld of her own free will and now she was her property. EVERYONE DESERVES A SAFE WORD AND AFTERCARE after certain sexual situations.
Empowering? My ass.

I'm so glad I did. Very cathartic as far as how the abusive ex husband was treated, and very much up my guilty pleasure alley in every other aspect. Also world building? and the dynamics? definitely check trigger warnings but seriously I expected just smut I guess? read this in like. two sittings.

Wow! Where do I start with this raw, provocative gem? This book was not at all what I expected; in so many ways. It is not for the faint of heart … The main character is a bisexual woman that finds herself unexpectedly in the most unlikely of places, and although on the surface, the journey that she goes through is gruesome and violent, the real journey is one of personal acceptance and discovery. There are elements of sex, extreme violence, Gore, BDSM, and 24/7 power exchange. Once again, not for the faint of heart.
I gave the book 5 stars because the storyline is so creative and the writing is superb. If you’re up for it, this book is definitely worth reading!

Holy cow! This dark romance really brings it with deep layers of feelings and self discovery. I loved the emotional journey that Grace and Lady Cora go through. This book captivated me and loved every moment! The female rage is real and Grace is so glorious as she learns to embrace it in her new existence! This is absolutely jam-packed! This is a dark romance so be sure to check the content details on the author’s website. It’s a fantastic read and I cannot wait to read Bound by Conceit!

Grace is trapped in an abusive marriage when things hit a peak - her husband is literally trading her life for his own… only things don’t go according to plan. One minute they’re in a strange bar at her husband’s behest, Grace broken & bruised, meeting a beautiful strange woman (who is clearly unimpressed with said husband), the next, she’s unconscious.
Grace doesn’t really understand what’s happening. All she knows is she is in a weird unfamiliar place, under the watchful eye of a statuesque model 10/10 hottie, Lady Cora, who seems to be completely enamored with her.
After being put down and abused, physically, emotionally, mentally - every way, by her ex, Grace is unsure how to handle Cora’s advances. She doesn’t trust herself, lady Cora, and doesn’t see her own worth after years of manipulation. But Cora isn’t about to let that shit slide.
I’d say more but like… spoilers. This baby was 🤌🏽😘

The power imbalance here is wild. I had to put the book down for now because this is veering into uncomfortable territory I wasn't prepared for.
Lady Cara has apparently lived through multiple wars and shifts in power — centuries old, walking through walls, reading minds, materializing objects… basically omnipotent. So why she's toying with a mortal like Grace is beyond me. The age gap + power dynamics are screaming. If this was Wattpad, I’d get it — maybe written by a 12-year-old or some chaotic sapphic fanfic extending canon — but this?
That said, I did appreciate Cara's honesty in revealing the truth about Grace’s infertility. That moment was handled with surprising care.
But then there's Sean — a terrible person, yes: GBV, drugging his wife, gaslighting her for five years. He deserves to be held accountable. But being banished to the deepest pit of the underworld (is that Tartarus? Is that even in Cara's jurisdiction?) feels... excessive. This is a world where gods, punishment, and metaphysics collide, but the stakes are being raised so rapidly it’s hard to suspend disbelief.
I don't mind speculative fiction bending the rules — but the emotional weight here isn't landing for me. I’m too close to the story to keep reading right now.
Will maybe return to it someday. For now, it’s a pause.

Received an ARC, this is my review.
This is my first ARC and I got extremely lucky. Sapphic romance, fantasy, retelling of Hades and Persephone? Count me in.
From the immediate start it is necessary to view the CWs. It's a long list and Nix brought them all to reality. Which leads directly into the next point I need to make; Currency In Flesh is beautifully written and incredibly refreshing to read in that respect. There are so many wonderfully described passages and sections that it's a breath a fresh air. The tone, dripping with power and oozing with majestic prowess, is masterfully done. None of the punches were pulled in this book and it shows; as I read through the chapters, I found it incredible the levels of mastery over the character ideals and personalities remained vivid and true. Rather than shy away from difficult topics, Nix embraces them with tact. Grace, Cora, and others feel more whole as a result. They are not to be taken lightly. Characters feel fleshed out and real and their dialogue makes sense. Characters make sense. The who and why of what they do are all so fully written that no one feels like an enigma and their motives are clear.
I do not want to spoil anything as I think this book is absolutely worth your time and effort to read, but the basic premise is that Grace finds herself in the hands of the Queen of the Underworld through no fault of her own. The story from there is one of Grace coming to terms with her life, her unlife, and being at the mercy of someone else in a very different respect than the ones she has known all her life. The journey of her character growth is magnificent and tender. Yet there is also plenty of incredible fury, hate, and revenge. All of those come together to make a radiant tale that is not only thought provoking, but satisfying. I'm working through my second readthrough now just to experience it again and see if I can't make some more connections with the knowledge I have from finishing the book.
It would not be a proper review without mentioning spice. Spice level is through the roof, in my opinion. There is *a lot* going on and it's decadent. I found myself blushing at a number of things throughout this book, and it's hard to make an ace woman blush.
Easy 5/5, would heartily recommend without a doubt.
This is my first ARC and I got extremely lucky. Sapphic romance, fantasy, retelling of Hades and Persephone? Count me in.
From the immediate start it is necessary to view the CWs. It's a long list and Nix brought them all to reality. Which leads directly into the next point I need to make; Currency In Flesh is beautifully written and incredibly refreshing to read in that respect. There are so many wonderfully described passages and sections that it's a breath a fresh air. The tone, dripping with power and oozing with majestic prowess, is masterfully done. None of the punches were pulled in this book and it shows; as I read through the chapters, I found it incredible the levels of mastery over the character ideals and personalities remained vivid and true. Hi, I wanted to drop in a review for Heather Nix's new book Currency In Flesh. I received an ARC copy, and as a fan of the Hades and Persephone mythology, I was stoked to be able to have an early read of this book.
It starts with Lady Cora (the Hades in this book) collecting on a soul debt - Grace (the Persephone). It’s a spicy book where the girl gets revenge, and learns to appreciate what fate has in store for her…. in a lot of ways.
What I loved about the book:
- I devoured this - I didn’t even wait to get it on my Kindle, instead reading on my phone screen. It was a very fast read and not because it was short - but because I wanted to keep going.
- Curvy Main Character learning to love her body
- The world building and magic around it. The Underworld can truly be whatever you want it to be, and Heather created something really spectacular with some mystery around why and how it happened.
- The spice. For serious. It was hot and heavy, and with a lot of seduction. I love some BDSM in my books, and this book really did a great job of exploring it.
- The sweet, sweet revenge. That’s all I will say about it.
What I wished there was more of:
- I am truly hoping this book is one in a series - there is so much about this world that I would love to see fleshed out even more. I was so sad to finish it because I felt like it ended a few chapters too soon.
This book was wonderful, and not just because I got an advanced copy. I can be super fickle, especially when actually reading and book and not just listening… but I am hoping an audiobook comes out.

A Dark Sapphic Treat!
Okay, so this book—wow. I picked it up with a bit of hesitation, but let me tell you, it didn’t just meet my expectations, it smashed them. Grace and Cora are our main leads here, and their journey? So intense and layered.
First up, that cover! It's seriously stunning—you’ll want it on your shelf. Grace and Cora’s connection goes beyond life itself, and you’ll feel the tension between them from the start.
This book doesn’t hold back; it’s got all the “spice” you’re looking for, with each scene more intense than the last. Their chemistry is fire, and watching their relationship develop felt so real. I’d have loved even more moments between them outside the intense scenes, just to add to their connection even further.
The vibe? Dark, haunting, and sooo atmospheric. One thing that impressed me was how the dialogue felt raw and authentic. The writing style is clean and balanced, and I’m amazed at how the author created such a haunting, mysterious tone without going overboard. Chapter 30, in particular, was unforgettable—I couldn't tear myself away from it.
And yes, I wanted more details on the places and settings, but maybe that’s just me loving it too much and wanting more!

Of all of the romance books that I read, such a small percentage of them are sapphic romances. And honestly, even though I read so much dark romance, I can’t say that I have ever had the opportunity to read a sapphic dark romance. So, this book was unlike any book I’ve read. Not only is this a dark sapphic romance, but it is a Hades and Persephone retelling, one of my favorite stories. I loved the theme of finding your strength and your bite and I got so happy reading how Lady Cora encouraged Grace to take back what had been taken from her. On top of all of that, I the D/s dynamic between Cora and Grace was perfect and written in a realistic and educated way, including things like subspace.
Lady Cora was the dominant, tough as nails, Goddess of the Underworld. She is everything that I have been missing in my MCs. She took what she wanted but you can see that she cares about Grace. The way she tells Grace that shes not one of the “good” people that end up in the isles, but she wanted her to find that strong woman underneath who was entitled to her revenge. And I loved the way that she kept assuring Grace that she was very attracted to her body, even though her husband had put her down for her weight.
Grace was like so many women who are victims of abuse. It takes everything for them to break out of the cycle and so many never do. She was beaten, abused, and used by her husband. She sees herself as weak and unattractive because that’s how he made her feel. She blossoms and grows with Cora. She becomes a whole new woman.
Dark sapphic romances are few and far in between. As someone who loves queer stories and dark romances, this was something I had been craving. The spice was spectacular and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. This was the first time reading this author, but it won’t be the last.

In this setting, she stumbles upon a sense of liberation, oblivious to the fact that her husband has made a pact that will bear grave repercussions for both of them.
I found this narrative to be thoroughly engaging. Currently, I am deeply drawn to dark romance, especially those imbued with melancholic themes that resonate with my experiences. Consequently, I was excited to encounter this story. It possesses a distinct quality, yet I believe Lady Cora acts as a transformative force for Grace, encouraging her to find her voice and embrace her authentic self without regret, regardless of societal expectations.
Lady Cora is an extraordinary character; she yearns for Grace's liberation, who, in turn, pledges her undying love to Cora, promising never to relinquish her soul to anyone else. Although Cora evokes a sense of fear, Grace ultimately feels a profound bond that empowers her to reclaim her strength. Witnessing this metamorphosis in a woman once broken is incredibly poignant; she uncovers the beauty and resilience needed to confront her inner demons and evolve into the person she was always meant to be.
I have recently delved into dark sapphic narratives, and this book has emerged as my second favorite read of the year. After a period of stagnation in my reading and reviewing pursuits, the last few months have rekindled my passion for literature, and I am thankful to have rediscovered my love for reading.

Inside the bar, her husband is trying to make some type of arrangement when a woman shows up. Grace is watching all of this play out with no understanding at all. Her husband assaults her but the woman intervenes which Grace appreciates.

Final thoughts: I had high hopes. At one point it was a good story with some mystery wrapped in revenge and desire. Then it just lost the plot and dragged and I wasn’t sure where it was going. It took me way too long to finish as I just got bored. The writing has potential it just needed some finesse. I enjoyed the spice and the revenge aspect because Grace’s husband deserved all he got but that’s really the only things I liked and overall, don’t recommend.

Great writing creates great images, and this book is filled with those. The author creates such vivid and luscious images that it felt like watching a movie rather than reading, and I forgot I was reading an ARC I’d have to review for a bit, until the watermark reminded me I had to take notes. I’ll admit however that style and images and characters aren’t enough to make me completely enamoured with a book, and after a while I wondered if those hints at a plot, that appeared quite far into the book, were ever going anywhere, and they didn’t. It’s the same issue I found in Mixing up Mayhem: great style, great imagery, great characters, but no plot to support all that, so that even though the book was quite short, the content didn’t justify its length.
In terms of content however, I have to say that what actually was there was very well written. Currency in Flesh is a story of reclamation, of healing, of vindication. The focus is on the main character Grace and her development, making the book sort of a character analysis. The intimacy and the dynamic between Grace and Cora grows alongside Grace’s confidence and self-discovery, so that their relationship puts the revenge on Sean in the background, without making it less satisfying. Grace has suffered expectations and abuse, and manages to start living only in death. She gets to choose to be used because she wants to, instead of being used because she had all choice taken from her. She gets to explore what makes her, her. And finally, she gets to take all that newfound knowledge and acceptance of herself and shove it confidently in the face of her abuser.

I received and ARC of this book, and I'm telling you, you're not ready. Hold onto your butts!
Nix took us on a journey of the dark underbelly of relationships with manipulation and abuse. She didn't hold any punches.
This was a story of retribution, a retelling of Hades and Persephone, but make it Sapphic.
Lady Cora is an interesting character. Top energy with a heavy dose of like, emotional unattachment? She cares, but she's not overt about it, which is also my love language, so I really connected with her.
Grace showed resiliency and grit, which is also something I love in MCs. She wasn't a pushover, only a victim to her circumstances.
This book was everything I crave in a sapphic romance. I rated it 4.5 stars *only* because I would have liked to have just a little more dialogue that eventually emotionally connected the characters together. But this was a really great book, like everything else Nix has written.
Nix's writing style reminds me a bit of Katee Robert or Kat Hawthorne's and is unapologetically spicy, dark, and stands by itself with its own voice as well. If you like Robert or Hawthorne's books, you're sure to like Nix.
If you haven't read a sapphic romance, but you like dark romance and Hades and Persephone retellings, I urge you to read this book. With all of the discourse going on currently about not reading sapphic work, I definitely think this one in particular is a great stepping stone into sapphic romance.

First things first, please, please, please read the trigger warnings the author has provided. There is some heavy stuff in this story and some of it is on page. It is handled brilliantly and deftly but it may be too much for some readers. The TWs are there for the reader's wellbeing. :) That being said the author is very upfront and clear about the dark subjects in the story so a reader has plenty of warning.
With that out of the way, this is a beautiful, brutal, dark, spicy, and wonderful read. I loved Grace, the FMC. She was human and flawed and healing and beautiful. Her arc is heart wrenching, heart warming, and so satisfying at it's end. The other FMC, Cora is delightfully written. Her interactions with Grace throughout the story sometimes surprised me but she is written gentle when she needs to be and hard as nails others. The dynamic between the two is at times sweet and often sooooooo hot. This author is probably one of my two or three favorite writers when it comes to darker or more triggering subjects because she writes them with a deft hand but doesn't lose detail where it is needed.

I received an ARC of this book and wow.
It was amazing, I was hooked from the first page, I do recommend that if you are easily triggered by domestic violence you may want to skip this book, as the first chapter is fairly detailed. If that doesn't bother you I fully recommend this dark spicy sapphic book.
This is the first book I've read from Heather Nix, but I know it won't be my last, i couldn't put it down, I read it in just over a day with the odd smallest of breaks here and there to take care of things that keep me alive, but even then, I couldn't sleep, I wanted to finish this book and see what happened next.
I fell in love with the characters, besides Sean, the chemistry and spice between Grace and the Queen of the underworld was perfectly written, my emotions went up and down with Grace's.
And then there is the revenge in this book, I found myself rooting for Grace, where it suddenly has darker moments from the spice and sapphic vibes between these two ladies, even though its somewhat intertwined.
Honestly I don't have a bad word to say about this book, I only wish it was longer, even though it is a good sized book, I didn't want it to end, I truly hope there will be a sequel.

This is the first book I've read from Heather Nix, but I know it won't be my last, i couldn't put it down, I read it in just over a day with the odd smallest of breaks here and there to take care of things that keep me alive, but even then, I couldn't sleep, I wanted to finish this book and see what happened next.
I fell in love with the characters, besides Sean, the chemistry and spice between Grace and the Queen of the underworld was perfectly written, my emotions went up and down with Grace's.
And then there is the revenge in this book, I found myself rooting for Grace, where it suddenly has darker moments from the spice and sapphic vibes between these two ladies, even though its somewhat intertwined.
Honestly I don't have a bad word to say about this book, I only wish it was longer, even though it is a good sized book, I didn't want it to end, I truly hope there will be a sequel.
Thank you Heather for not only writing this awesome book, but for also letting me be an ARC reader. Although this is the first time I've been an ARC reader I've currently applied to 3 or 4 others.
