Meryem’s words delighted me with their tenderness, their ability to carry me into the scene, to clutch at my heart and bring me to tears. I most enjoyed the intimate poems featuring Clara, her mixed identity, healing & becoming/unbecoming.
If you enjoy indie and Canadian poetry, you’ll love this collection.
A four-chambered first book of poetry, by someone who likes to dress all in black and drink scalding hot tea sometimes in cafes, sometimes eavesdropping on other translators, and sometimes cold. Spoiler alert: we were in a QWF poetry class together, where we listened for the poem and to one another's listening poems. I loved a lot of the poems in Backbone. Perhaps my favourites are Clara: A Dinner, Metamour and Panacea. I heard a few in their early or late iterations. The collection has a strong narrative drive but also wanders in the wilderness, at times melancholic, at others introspective. Clara is a fixture who adds a lot of emotional and cultural texture to a book already very invested in carving out spaces for cultural memory, humour and celebratory self-invention.
