Harrowdean Manor #2

Burn Like an Angel

Rate this book
“This documentary is your chance to set the record straight. All we want is the truth.”

Harrowdean Manor is on fire.

When a violent riot erupts, the fragile order inside the institute’s walls crumbles overnight. Mob mentality and chaos now reign.

We’re in the eye of the storm.
But the real war is in our minds.

Amidst the anarchy, the true enemy lurks just beyond the barricades. Plotting. Preparing. Waiting to strike.

Escaping their sick experiment won’t erase our sins. Danger still lurks around every corner as we flee a criminal conspiracy on the verge of collapse.

Penniless. Broken. Abandoned.
I’ve lost everything, but I still have them.

Lennox hurt me.
Xander broke me.
Raine healed me.

Banding together, we’re a twisted, imperfect family of misfits and criminals.

We sacrificed our sanity to survive. Our voices are all we have left. Now we’ll tell the world our story and clear our names.

Even villains deserve happy endings.
And I’ll tear this empire down to get mine.

Author’s Note: Burn Like An Angel (Harrowdean Manor #2) is a dark, why choose romance and book two in the duet. It must be read in order. Set in the J Rose shared universe.

Burn Like an Angel by J. Rose

Around 4 stars out of 5

Even though I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars, it is such a difficult book to rate. When I read Sin Like The Devil I was completely blown away. I am not a huge fan of the 'why choose' trope (because of how overused it is nowadays and used for shock value instead of story building) but Sin Like The Devil made me realize how freaking addictive it is, when it's done right. Ripley was such a strong, fierce and no-nonsense kind of girl in the first book. She was hardened by what she went through. And I love the almost cruel edge to Xander and Lennox. Even Raine was raw. And I soaked all those details into my soul and completely got lost in that world. If I could have given it 10 out of 5 stars I would have done that.

So when I could sign up for an early copy of Burn Like An Angel I instantly did so. And when I got it I just had to read it ASAP. But the reading experience was vastly different from the first book. It felt like a completely different series with completely different characters. Don't get me wrong. It is a great book. But the difference between book 1 and 2 is humongous.

First things first. This book picks up right after the first one ended. Ripley, Xander, Lennox and Laine find each other and find a safe place at the medical wing during the insane riot that broke out at Harrowdean Manor. Lennox is hurt and Langley who has joined them treats Lennox.

And that is what this book is about. How do they survive during this riot? And how will they escape and find safety? And how safe is it in the real world?

Another part of the book takes place in the present. Ripley gave that all revealing interview in the first book. And Xander is pissed and severely disagrees with her. He doesn't want their story to be used in a documentary. And his fury drives him back to Harrowdean Manor and his goal is to stop the documentary from being released.

And it's an exciting journey. I like how different their goals are. And how differently the past drives them in the present time.

But even though I liked it. Another part of me was soooo disappointed. And I don't mean this disappointment negatively towards the book or the author. But the first book was so raw. I loved how in part cruelty drove the characters. I loved how unforgiving they were. How they used one another and loved one another because of it. And how unique their relationship felt.
In this book they all mellowed down so incredibly much. They all lost their edge. They lost that power in their core. They are kind, sweet, even gentle towards each other.
The same goes for the s** scenes. In the first book they are raw, unforgiven and so all consuming. In the sequel they are kinder, gentle. Still rough, but rough without an edge. And I missed that so much. I was so ready for that edge, that cruelty, that passion. I was ready for their unforgiving personalities. And poof they are gone.
I do understand that of course relationships evolve and change. But I just longed for that same gritty feeling the first book had. And that was just completely gone. So while I read it I liked it. But I also read it with disappointment flaming in my core. It felt like a sort of loss in that regard. And I think I grieved a little while I read it. And I think if I'll read it a second time around I know what to expect. And I'll enjoy it more.

But all in all still a fantastic book and I really enjoyed this duology by J. Rose!

I cannot believe how much this series got to me, actually I can because this author always writes amazing pieces, but this duet will really make you question what you would do to survive... It completely embodies the morally grey trope.🖤
This book occurs over two timelines essentially which adds to the whole drama and mystery as to what these guys do to get out and survive. You know they get there but it’s all about the journey and what a rollercoaster that is. First they have to contend with the riot, escaping and then what to actually do to escape the enemy and their attempts to stop the truth getting out 😲 It forces them to face their feelings for Ripley and develop the strength of their family bonds to overcome what is thrown at them throughout this book. Not only that but each of the guys individual relationships with Ripley develops aswell, emotionally and on a spicy front 🌶 Although there are outside threats they also have their own personal demons to contend with, some are mental health based and really show the difficulties these here dealt with. A moving read, thankfully there is a deserved HEA even if you are constantly questioning whether this little family will ever get it!

AHHH I can’t believe it’s over. This was such a wild ride from start to finish. J Rose writes the most real/raw stories and characters. I truly enjoyed this duet. The way everything connected in this one to the Blackwood Institute timeline was phenomenal. Like, my mind was blown at everything! The details and events, all of it! And watching Ripley and her men go from actual enemies to lovers was great. Like this is a TRUE enemies to lovers story. I ate it up! Raine, oh sweet Raine! I love him so much. He was the sunshine and sweetness that was needed in this story. His character is one of my favorites. Xander, my oh my! I ate him up! He’s broken, misunderstood, and unhinged in the best way possible. Lennox, man.. he did some wild things that had my jaw on the floor but I loved seeing his character growth! I just want to hug them! And then Ripley, wow she’s a badass! She didn’t take their shit at all. She’s a true queen. And omgg the ending? Pls I was crying. It made me so emotional. It was such a beautiful way to wrap this story up. I can’t believe I’m finished with the J Rose universe now. It makes me sad because these were truly some of the best books I’ve ever read! If you want RH stories that have addicting and interesting plots with the most amazing spice.. start the J Rose universe today! I highly suggest reading them in order.

Burn like an Angel was the perfect conclusion to this duet. Like always, J. Rose doesn’t miss. Her stories always suck me in and make me forget about my own life. I’m a big fan of Xander (slay!) and I loved the crossover moments with the characters from Blackwood Institute & Sabre Security.

I can’t wait for future work of J. Rose 🥰

I legit stopped adulting for the day to devour this book. To give this series a description I have to call it heartbreakingly beautiful.

This is the second book in the duet and it picked up right where the last book left off with just as much action and suspense.

I absolutely love Xander, Ripley, Lennox, and Raine’s dynamics and relationship. Each is so different but support one another in such powerful ways. This whole world that has been created within the Harowdeen Manor and all the other psyche wards was so well written that I was in tears, sweating a bit, or so engulfed I forgot my surroundings.

Absolutely loved this duet so much!

First off, you MUST read Sin Like the Devil first before reading BLAA. When SLTD ends it rolls right into this book.

After waiting to read what happens in the asylum and how it ended in BLAA I’m so happy to have finished this duet.

𝗥𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗲. 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗲. 𝗙𝗶𝘅𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲. 𝗙𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲.

Ya she’s still the same badass and still dealing with the same 3 delinquents. Ripley does that. She’ll make you fall in love with her in the most messed up way, and it’s so easy to get wrapped up around her finger.

𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗲’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗺𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱. 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲. 𝗦𝗵𝗲’𝘀 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗺𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗜 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀.

I was waiting for this “rekindle” to happen. Omg and let me tell you, she made him WORK FOR IT 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

The scenes were spicier than SLTD and hella creative. I was 🫠🫠🫠🫠 at every scene.

The plot to spice ratio was not even close, yes the 🌶️ was so good, but the plot was even better. I really lived for Ripley to get her revenge.

This book is heavily dark, please read ALL TRIGGER WARNINGS BEFORE READING!

I was sceptical about how book 2 of this duet would shape up and I can confirm it absolutely delivered.

Yes this book is a why choose, but the plot ratio is significantly higher than other books that I’ve read of this genre. Continuing on from Book 1, this has some time jumps and shifting points of view to when the institution of Harrowdean falls and the intervening years for Ripley, Raine, Xander and Lennox. We see the challenges the foursome face in escaping the real life evil regime that threatens their lives and future.

This delivers into the complexity of mental health, the issues of power and control, wealth and privilege and the sins that can be hidden if you’re rich enough.

At times there we lulls in the book, but upon reflection they helped flesh out the dynamics and usually provided additional insight into the character whose POV was being shared.

A fitting end to the series

Rose does it again. I am obsessed with her writing and will continue to read anything this woman writes.

Continuing with the Harrowdean crew we watch what happened during and after the riot that is sparked in the institute. The emotions I felt while reading this book shouldn’t come as a surprise as this whole universe is great for making me fall in love with all the broken characters.

This was perfect and I loved it all.

When I heard we were getting an expansion of the world of Blackwood Institute, one of my favorite series ever, I screamed and hopped on the chance to read it. Brooklyn and her guys absolutely stole my heart, as has Ripley and her guys. Sin Like The Devil was beyond amazing; it’s been out for at while now and I still think about it. And this one was even better.

As usual, J. Rose has crafted a beautiful and incredibly flawed cast of characters. Their character arcs had me so emotional. It was amazing watching them all grow, seeing their inner fears, their strengths, and the bond they shared. I love peeling back the layers of complex characters and finding out why they are the way they are, and these guys were definitely complex.

Raine is still my favorite of the guys. I love all of them, but Raine just has this special place in my heart. He’s like a burst of sunshine on a rainy, gloomy day. Xander surprised me, as did Lennox. I’m excited to see what others think of their arcs. And the beautiful Ripley, so lost and full of anger and pain. By the end, I was totally in love with her.

I had to stop reading a few times as I was overcome with all these feelings, which isn’t surprising when it comes to J. Rose. I can always expect heart wrenching pain along with soul deep healing, making the pain extremely worth it.

I’m so excited for what’s coming next. I know it’s gonna hurt, but I’m ready for it.

I received an advanced copy and this is my voluntary review

J Rose stunned me again, this time with the second book of her "Harrowdean Manor" duet – "Burn Like An Angel".

It's hard for me to collect my thoughts after this book, but I'm really going to try. J Rose leaves me speechless when it comes to her books again, and the two things I'm angry about is that I didn't find her books sooner and that I won't be able to start any other of them right away. I am absolutely mesmerized by her ability to write a story in such way, that it can captivate the reader with its darkness, and not only make you want to not stop reading until you finish it, but after that, she makes you want and need more.

For the past few days, while reading "Burn Like An Angel" I was not just immersed in the story, I was WITH the characters, I was running for my life, I felt their horror and helplessness, but at the same time their hope for salvation and a better life, I saw the ruins of the riot in the institute and prayed that society would believe the patients, and not reject them or even worse - bury them even deeper because of the sins, they were forced to carry out in order to protect themselves from the horrors of the Incendia Corporation. I laughed, I was afraid, I loved and I cried along with these characters – this book was THAT good. The author is also THAT good.

But let me start from the beginning.

"Burn Like An Angel" picks up right where "Sin Like The Devil" left off and throws us shockingly back into the story. Inside the institute, of course, there is complete chaos, absolute anarchy, as the riot is just gaining momentum and is breaking out with a force that sweeps everything in its path, which makes the dynamics supreme from the beginning.

"You didn't silence me." I stare into his petrified eyes. "You just made me desperate. I'll never let you take my voice again. Never."

The book kept me on my toes all the time. Even in the moments of calm, there were still hints of skepticism on my part that the characters were safe and that I could safely rest for a few seconds before they were thrown back into a new melee and something bad happened to them. And yet, there was not a second in which I felt disoriented. Every time I sat down to read it, I immediately sank back into the story, without wondering what happened last, without losing the thread and without wanting to stop.

The action, the tension - I feel like they are repeatedly amplified when reading, once because I experienced them with the characters and once because I experienced them as a reader for the characters. The factors that made me fall in love with the duet are many, but this emotional impact it had on me, is one of the most important ones.

I feel at home curled up in Raine's arms. Breathing in his citrus, sea salt scent. Arguing with Lennox. Drowning in his watered-down green eyes. Touching Xander and dragging a smile from him on the days he closes himself off.
Somewhere along the way, they became my home.
I don't have to be alone anymore.

In this book, we get to know the men around Ripley much more, while at the same time continuing to get to know her. Or rather, a completely different version of her, which she has so far diligently tried to hide from everyone, including herself. The version of Ripley who is not afraid to rely on someone, to love, and who no longer has to deal with everything on her own because she has help by her side. And the responsible people for bringing this version to light, are Raine who was the first to reach her and break her walls made of ice; Xander, who, by opening up to her, made her fall in love with him and his vulnerability; and Lennox, who, although had the the hardest times with all this of all three of them, was the reason she realized that she wanted to have a “forever” with the four of them together.

It isn't a weakness to love or be loved. Those connections are actually what make us strong.

The moments of each of the men separately with Ripley are so full of emotions that it is impossible not to feel them while reading. You can't help but feel everything they feel and read it in their behavior. However, when they are all together, then they are a force that no one can knock down and nothing can stop. However, I can't hide that I was most excited about Lennox (not because he's my favorite, because I said about the first book and I still have the same opinion, that this is the first rh book in which I can't choose my favorite from everyone, just because I like them all and every one of them stuck out differently), but because he was the most obstinate of all, and refused to admit even to himself how much he was in love with Ripley. Which made everything even sweeter.

Beneath all that goddamn beautiful rage, we're just alike. Together, we could be unstoppable. Our rage will burn the whole fucking world.

The climax is killer good! Extremely strong and full of action, twists and emotions. It kept me on my toes, and the agony I felt as I read what was happening was only fueled by the need to go further to make sure that everything would be okay in the end.

The ending is so beautiful that I wanted to cry and rejoice at the same time. And the small surprise in the epilogue only makes me want to pick up the author's previous books faster.

If you haven't read "Harrowdean Manor" yet, fix this error as soon as possible. Only then will you understand what I am talking about.

This book is everything and more and deserves all the stars.

✨On the Run
✨Disability and Mental Illness Rep
✨Why Choose
✨Redemption

To say that I love this book seems like it doesn't even slightly touch upon my feelings for it. Ever since first starting J Rose's universe I have been in awe of how this universe is connected and interwoven. While all the series, including the Harrowdean Manor duet, can be read as standalones it is just so much more impressive when you read them all in order and just get to see the whole universe unfold and connect all the bits and pieces from the different series.

Burn Like An Angel is one book where I felt like this was especially the case, seeing as it has ties to Sabre Security and Blackwood Institute. We got to see the whole conflict that started in the Blackwood Institute series but from the standpoint of Harrowdean Manor and it was so amazing to see a story that has similar aspects being so completely different and giving us even more details to a story that has been spanned across multiple books and series.

In BLAA we jump straight into the conflict where we left off in Sin Like The Devil with Ripley and Lennox escaping from the Z wing and stumbling straight into Harrowdean Manor overrun by its patients and in the middle of a riot. Ripley and Lennox being severely hurt from their time in the Z wing have to lie low with Xander, Raine, and Langley in the hopes of surviving not only their injuries but also the riot and the chaos that has consumed Harrowdean. But when they are forced to flee the institute they are left with nowhere to go, no means to protect themselves, and with the ever-present threat of the Incendia Corporation hanging over their heads, and let's not forget the fact that some of them are injured and need medicine and others need medicine to keep their mental illnesses in check.

The connections that Ripley, Raine, Xander, and Lennox form in this book are so strong, having been through so much they truly start to learn to lean on each other and to let the past be in the past. It was so heartbreaking and healing to learn more about the characters' backstories and get to see them opening up about their traumas and feelings to Ripley and the rest of the group and start their healing journey, especially with the added bonus of us seeing glimpses of them in the present day POV (which plays 10 years after the events of Harrowdean Manor) and how far they have come in those 10 years. I could truly never find the right words to describe how much I love this group of characters, not only as individual characters but also in the way that they function as a group and a family and do everything to protect each other. And the way that each of the guys has their own unique relationship with Ripley is so special to see.

J Rose gave these characters and this story everything it deserved and I can truly call this nothing less than perfection, from the way that the world was built, to the storyline, to the way that while it is quite similar to Blackwood it still is its own story that is so different from what the Blackwood characters went through, to the way that she describes and handles such delicate and intense topics, and finally to the way that she built those characters and let us go from disliking, maybe even hating some of them in the beginning, to loving them in the span of these two books.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hold on tight—because Burn Like An Angel by J. Rose grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. Dangerous, electrifying, and filled with enough raw emotion to set your heart racing, this book is everything I hoped for as the explosive conclusion to the Harrowdean Manor Duet. Ripley and her Fallen Angels—Lennox, Xander, and Raine—emerge from the chaos of Sin Like the Devil, broken but defiant, proving that even in ruin, there’s a fierce kind of beauty in rising together.

From the first page, Rose plunges us back into the maelstrom, where survival feels like a razor’s edge and every relationship is tested by blood and betrayal. Ripley isn’t just a protagonist; she’s a force of nature. Her strength and vulnerability entwine in ways that feel heartbreakingly real, making her journey as much about reclaiming her identity as it is about vengeance. And her Fallen Angels? These men aren’t just arm candy or smutty cardboard cutouts (a trope I dread in most RH/Why Choose stories). No—Lennox, Xander, and Raine are achingly human, their flaws and scars laid bare in ways that make them unforgettable.

What sets this duet apart is how well it balances the grit and glamour of its high-stakes world with poignant explorations of mental health. Rose doesn’t flinch from the darkness these characters carry, nor does she romanticize it. Instead, she delivers gut punch after gut punch of honest, visceral emotion. You feel every moment of their pain, fear, and unwavering loyalty to one another. It’s the kind of writing that stays with you long after you’ve closed the book.

Of course, no book is without its minor flaws, and while I adored Burn Like An Angel, there were moments I wished for more. The epilogue, while intriguing, felt overstuffed with cameos and setup for future books in Rose’s shared universe. It risked pulling me away from the intense connection I’d built with Ripley, Lennox, Xander, and Raine. A quieter, more introspective ending focusing solely on their shared journey—especially their healing—would have elevated this from a phenomenal book to an all-time favourite. Similarly, while the action scenes were masterfully done, I sometimes found myself craving deeper moments of reflection amidst the chaos.

But let’s be clear: these are nitpicks on a very high level. J. Rose has crafted a duet that delivers everything I’ve ever wanted from this genre—compelling characters, razor-sharp tension, emotional depth, and yes, a solid steam to keep things spicy. Burn Like An Angel isn’t just a book; it’s an experience worthy of a TV adaptation. Whether you’re a RH/Why Choose fan or just looking for a story that will take you to the edge and back, I can’t recommend this duet enough.

Final verdict? A solid four stars for this heart-stopping conclusion and a resounding recommendation to dive into J. Rose’s shared universe. If you haven’t read Sin Like the Devil yet, give it a go. You’ll be dying to see how Rip and her Fallen Angels light the world on fire to survive the hell they were tossed in. 🔥

*I received an ARC of Burn Like An Angel in exchange for an honest and voluntary review. My thoughts, opinions, and ratings are entirely my own and were not influenced in any way by receiving the ARC.

What a trip! I don't think I've ever read a series/duet like Harrowdean Manor. It was dark, twisted, disturbing, spicy and had some interesting characters that grew over the course of the duet to take down a corrupt mental institution.

Burn Like an Angel picks up immediately after the first book, Sin Like the Devil so obviously you need to read the books in order. A riot has started and Ripley, Raine, Xander and Lennox are caught up in it. They are broken and hurt but have never given up. With a sense of doom mixed with freedom, our characters grow and change and realize how their lives with their families ultimately shaped them into who they are today. With no real love given, they are learning to find love in each other while taking down the evil that stole them from their innocence. It's an emotional ride mixed in with survival and learning to trust for this group of characters and it's all done after they escape and are finding their way in the "real world".

I liked how J Rose continued with the dual timelines of the present and the past and how she brought those two together. We finally get the answers of what the heck happened at the institution and how their group was going to reveal the corrupt individuals and take them down from the inside out. All while this is happening, we begin to see each character come alive with Ripley. She has her hands in all the pots and I loved that for her. ;) The intimate scenes between her and the guys really progressed from book one and you could feel the emotions changing in them. I still have my soft spot for Raine as he seemed to be the consistent glue along with Rip, but Lennox and Xander really grew on me. From the way they went from enemies of Ripley's to lovers was quite the swing, but understanding where they came from helped with the growth of their relationships. Their relationships all together, while so different, were dang hot and also emotionally beautiful.

This was my first dive into J. Rose's books and boy has she created one twisted, messed up, imperfect world. I liked that I got to experience it by audio with Sophie Hunter Scott as Ripley and John Hartley as Raine, Xander and Lennox. I do wish the accents changed up a bit to distinguish between the MMCs, but I could feel the darkness of the characters and how that evolved over the course of the story with the narrators performances. While this may be the end of this duet, we have a whole J Rose universe that is connected. I love that this particular universe focuses on mental health while giving us a vicious world in which some villainous characters manipulate the innocent for their own power. I can't wait to read more from this universe.

4.75⭐️ SHE HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!! Oh my god, what a fantastic ending to Ripley, Raine, Xander, and Lennox's story🥹.

Harrowdean Manor is the series that started my J Rose journey, and I will forever be thankful. Since Sin Like The Devil, I have found countless stories of hers that have become deeply ingrained in my mind. There is no difference with Burn Like An Angel.

We pick up right where we left off in SLTD and go through a wild journey with Rip and her men. The emotional roller coaster was crazy in this one! J Rose always has a way of making me sad and on the verge of tears one minute to laughing and then actually crying😅. The way she writes emotions through her characters is genuinely phenomenal and always makes for a deeper connection to the story.

I already loved Xander and Lennox, but I adored seeing their development in BLAA.  While staying true to who they were and their personalities, we saw a whole new side of them with Ripley, and it was so good!! As for Raine, he is forever my favorite <3 I just can't get enough of him!! Ripley and Raine's connection holds such a special place in my heart. It's filled with love, tenderness, and deep understanding between one another, and it just radiates off the pages.

As for Ripley's connection to Xander and Lennox, wow. Seeing Xander and Lennox, who at one point wanted to cause Ripley the same pain she caused them, finally open up and lean on her was so sweet. Each of these characters has been through so much, on their own and together, and in BLAA, we get to see them find a family. Throughout this book, we see them heal, love, and protect each other. Each relationship between Ripley and the guys was unique and special in their own way. Raine is her peace, Lennox is her storm, and Xander is her protector.

Harrowdean Manor was indeed the perfect story for these characters. I think J Rose did an excellent job giving us complex romances, crazy plots, and just a beautiful story overall. I loved seeing how this book connected with her other series, especially Blackwood Institute, being that there's a conflict from that series that we see parts of in SLTD and the continuation of it in BLAA. Speaking of Blackwood, I was so happy to see my favorites again!!! I literally teared up when we got our first Hudson mention & don't even get me started on when we got to see all of them together😣.

Burn Like An Angel was so great, and while I am sad to be saying goodbye to these characters, I cannot wait to see what's next! If you have yet to read Sin Like The Devil, I highly recommend you go do that so you can jump into Burn Like An Angel when it releases on November 29th!

*thank you to J Rose and Valentine PR for the arc!*

“Because I'll always be safe with a villain on my side.”

I will start by saying that I was given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank so much J. Rose and the team over Valentine PR for sending a copy my way!

I will try and keep my review as spoiler free as possible but just be wary if you haven’t read the first book, Sin Like the Devil.

J. Rose’s Sabre Security universe might be one of my favorite fictional worlds—and Harrowdean Manor slots in perfectly. The minute Burn Like an Angel hit my Kindle, I knew I had to read it. I was desperate to discover what became of Ripley and her team after the wild ending of Sin Like a Devil.

Thankfully, we picked up right where we left off. The group escapes Harrowdean and is on the run. It’s on the run where their beautiful found family dynamic develops. They’ll resort to any means necessary to survive and gain their freedom. It’s hard for them to trust anyone since they know exactly how far the Incendia Corporation’s power extends. Despite its dark and twisted nature, Burn Like an Angel has some light and quiet moments. These moments give them all a chance to heal and forgive the horrible things they’ve done while locked up in the Incendia’s institutions.

It’s no surprise that romance takes a backseat while they are on the run. But we get some beautiful moments, like the first date the guys organise for Ripley when she’s having a bad day. My heart swooned at how hard they tried to give Ripley a normal movie date night experience. On their date, the guys’ gift Ripley a bracelet. The scene in the hospital where she rips them to shreds about the covert reason for the bracelet left me cackling. If you know, you know.

The tension throughout is perfect. The group is trying to escape and hide from this powerful entity who wants to kill them. They know too much to be left alive. Ripley and Raine’s health issues made their escape more difficult. Ripley doesn’t have her medication and is struggling with the manic and depressive episodes of her bipolar disorder. Raine is running low on methadone, which is the only thing that keeps his opioid withdrawal from killing him. The depiction of these mental health issues here was raw, dark, and felt authentic.

This was the perfect way to end Ripley, Raine, Lennox and Xander’s story—even if, selfishly, I wish we got a little more. If you love a dark, why choose romance with morally grey characters—yes, Ripley holds her own against these guys—Harrowdean Manor is the book for you!

I started this book right when it appeared on my kindle, but had to take a break two chapters in to reread Sin Like The Devil and I’m glad I did. You get thrown right back into the action and it’s easier to emotionally adjust when you have SLTD fresh in your mind. Honestly, I read this entire book on the edge of my seat, reminding myself with every new chapter to take a full breath and relax my muscles. These are not traditionally good people, but lines blur easily when you’re just trying to survive, and you’ll find yourself rooting for them anyway. J. manages to get under my skin in a way that pulls my inner mentally ill self free from the confines years of therapy and several psychiatric stays put her in, and it’s amazing to feel seen for a part of you that has long been suppressed. She is great at making people feel like the ‘taboo’ mentally ill parts of them also deserve to exist and take up space, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.

Raine is a special kind of sunshine. Considering what the fates threw at him, his personality and way of treating those around him made my heart warm. Xander tugged on my heartstrings in the way that he’s so intense but never got to take up space, and the way he grew in this was beautiful and made total sense for his character. Same with Lennox - they try so hard to grow and better themselves to become a home for Ripley (and so does she) but it’s beautifully in character and although they grow, they stay true to themselves and most importantly: they don’t magically ‘get fixed’. Ripley is still bipolar, her men are still traumatised and *certain ones* are still a little emotionally stunted, yet they still get their happily ever after. They still deserve safety and happiness and love, even when they’re forever a work in progress - which is my favourite thing about this entire universe. Somehow, it always manages to feel like home.

“Somewhere along the way, they became my home. I don’t have to be alone anymore.”

I cannot put into words my love for this series (and blackwood institute obviously). I am constantly in awe of the plot, the phenomenal characters and the mental health representation in these books. each book that comes out, there are twists and turns i’m not at all expecting, or characters i get more attached to, which i didn’t think was humanly possible…

“I want the future I became the stooge for. And i want it with them.”

in this book we get a look more into lennox and xander’s past/pov. these two men are our hot-headed, hate to love types that we can’t stay away from. i adore when a hard shelled man has a soft spot for their girl… that’s a micro trope I will always love till death, and these two men reek of it.

“I’ll be your villain if that’s what you want” “No one is going to lay another finger on you.. not if they want that finger attached.”

raine, oh our sweet raine. our little lover boy, golden retriever man, nothing could make me hate him. you can’t change my mind. and ripley, our fmc. this girl has been through the ringer and yet she is one of the strongest female characters i’ve read.

“I may not be the monster behind this program, but i’m sure as f*ck no angel either. I’ll burn for their sins.”

I will always recommend blackwood institute and harrowdean manor to everyone I come in contact with. these books have truly been such an escape, with deep concepts and hard hitting stories, they stick with you long after your done reading them. I am sad to have this series come to an end, but absolutely blessed to have been part of the arc team for this amazing series.

J Rose, you have ruined me yet again. I absolutely love it, please keep them coming… 🫶🏻

This book is...I'm speechless.

This series will be my favorite read of the year, meaning it will beat out a Pepper Winters series and you know she's my favorite author and almost impossible to beat. J Rose has done it though.

This book picks up right where the first ended. I liked the way J Rose wrote the riot. I wasn't sure if we would get a lot from the riot or if everyone would just run immediately. They didn't and I really enjoyed the riot.

Of course we couldn't stay in the riot and when Ripley and her guys finally did run I really enjoyed their time on the road. I loved the character development that everyone went through it was amazing. It's J Rose, her characters always goes through so many things and always come out the other side as new people.

I especially loved Xander's character development. He went through so many things. I didn't really like him in the first book, but man did I love him in this. It took a while but once Xander figured out his feeling and realised his love for Ripley, Raine and Lennox he loved so hard. He did not give up and he fought like hell for them. And I was here for it cheering him on.

Once again Raine continues to impress. I love that man so much. J Rose always writes characters that you just fall so deeply in love with. First Eli and now Raine.

I'm so in love with this whole BI world J Rose has created. I will never tire of reading about these beautiful broken characters. I really hope J Rose writes books for the remaining institutes.

Loved this book, love J Rose. There's a reason she's one of my favorite authors and this book is incredible. Start to finish I'm entertained. I'm falling in love with characters, I cannot get enough.

I will always love seeing previous characters and loved seeing both Brooklyn and her guys and Harlow and her guys. Perfect ending to an amazing duet.

Seppy's 5-Star Review:

This Duet is amazingly written and book one must be read first.  This book has to different timelines then and now. In the now, Ripley is telling the truth of what happened to her and hints at the future but leads to creating more mystery of what happened in the then to lead to now.  All the questions you ask yourself about happens and the rollercoaster of the then leave you wanting more and needing to find their truth and not the lies being told. This one is definitely full of morally grey actions to survive and escape their hell. It truly breaks my heart how these characters are treated like their non-human and that they dont deserve to be treated like people because  they have mental illnesses. Ripley and the guys Lennox, Xander and Raine  who hate each other at the beginning learn to heal and admit their own faults. As a reader you're rooting for them especially with a few swoon-worthy moments throughout the hell they battle through as they work together to escape; there relationships change as couplesand their group. Its a beautifully written Reverse Harlem and I love a good enemies-to-lovers why choose. Please check this Duet out if you love dark romance, enemies to lovers and Reverse Harlem books. It's another amazing book from J.Rose.

WELL DONE 🫶🏾

this picks up right where book one left off. we dive right back into the present day and past conflicts. the plot is so strong and well written. the only thing that I would’ve asked for is to see the results from the documentary but the story is still so strong without it.

our characters have amazing development. I love that this story is parallel to Blackwood so we get to see that plot line and characters too. Ripley is so strong, she held out amazingly this entire story. Our mmc’s are perfect for her, I loved reading their dynamic unfold and how strong and judgement free they became.

this book does have spice and I give it a 2. Some scenes had me kicking my feet.

there is amazing mental health representation in this book. I think it’s done nearly as accurately as possible which is why I have J Rose as my go to author for these types of stories.

I highly recommend this story and will be purchasing a physical copy.

I did receive this as an arc but all opinions are my own. this book releases november 29, 2024 and will be on ku.

Burn Like An Angel is the second book in the Harrowdean Mannor duet. It is a dark, why choose romance with a found family, trigger warnings, morally gray characters, and a HEA.

This is such an awesome conclusion to this duet. Ripley, Lennox, Raine, and Xander fight for their lives, their love, and their HEA. Ripley's character growth throughout this book is emotional and trying. To be honest, all of their personal journeys were very emotion provoking. I loved the mental health aspect of this story, as well as the action, twisty turns, intrigue, and steam. There truly wasn't anything about this story that I didn't love!

This book is amazingly written with fantastic flow, pace, plot, characters, character development, relationship development, storytelling, storyline, and world building. I r really loved this book and duet, and I would highly recommend it.

If she’s writing it, I’m reading it. So I was totally ecstatic to receive my first ARC from J Rose and of course I loved it! 😍Burn Like An Angel is Book 2 of the Harrowdean Manor duet - I strongly recommend reading Book 1 first or you may be lost.

Ripley and her guys are back again and this time we’re pulled back to the Manor to see what transpired during that fateful night. Trying to piece back their fractured minds, Rip, Nox, Xan, and Raine will stop at nothing to bad together for their happy ending. This duet is a MUST read if you are a Why Choose fan like me.

Amazing on audio

The storyline continues right where we left off at the end of the first book. It was full of action and the progression of the story was great. I also loved how the complete relationship finally came together in the midst of a really exciting storyline. Great closure overall.

The audio aspect of this brought it up to another level. The narrators were absolutely phenomenal. The way they gave each character their own unique personalities is everything I look for in an audiobook. And the accents were so swoon-worthy!!

No freaking words right now. Truly a masterpiece, but what else did I expect from J Rose?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Watch it, swimming pool. You aren’t winning awards for romance either.”

Going back to Ripley’s crazy escape was just what I needed, edge of the seat sort of reading. My baby Raine, ugh I wish I could reach through the screen and give him a big hug.

Xander, Lennox and Raine are all very welcome to my house.

In this book we see their journey through escaping Harrowdean, I couldn’t put it down.

Finally, they let Sabre Security help them. It doesn’t end there though! Much like Blackwood they’re still being targeted…. You’ll have to read to find out what happens!!!

🖤 Mental Health Rep
🔥 Why Choose
🖤 Enemies to Lovers
🔥 Disability Rep
🖤 YOU WONT WANT TO PUT IT DOWN!!

“Um, in case anyone is keeping tabs… I definitely have a sharing kink. That was so fucking hot, I think I came twice.”

That sneak peek at the next book 👀👀

4.5 🌟

'ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀʟᴅ ᴀʙᴀɴᴅᴏɴᴇᴅ ʜᴀʀʀᴏᴡᴅᴇᴀɴ ᴍᴀɴᴏʀ. ᴍᴜᴄʜ ʟɪᴋᴇ ɪᴛ ᴀʙᴀɴᴅᴏɴᴇᴅ ᴜs.'

After Sin Like the Devil, I've been patiently anticipating the release of this book. I fell in love with these characters and I needed to know how there story ended. Still not ready to let them go yet though.

Right back where Sin Like the Devil left off were back deep into this shared universe. Ripley and her guys are having a seriously hard time of things, but they are nothing if not resilient.  This story once again is not without its bumps in the roads. But these characters could never make me hate them if they tried.
I loved the snippets from the shared universe and some cameos from the Blackwood boys. The epilogue though, honestly was the perfect wrap up to this story.

Can't wait to jump into whatever J Rose brings next. Because I'm sure I'll always love whatever she brings to the page.

The duet is finally finished! This story will forever be embedded in my heart! J Rose writes nothing short of a masterpiece and it shows! I felt every emotion possible for all the characters in this story. Their love story grew beautifully and it was such a raw and obstacle-filled journey to their much deserved HEA! I’ll always recommend a J Rose book, also if you loved her Blackwood series, grab this one to read soon! You’ll fall in love all over again!
