The Cry of a Bird which I found in a used bookshop is an amazing testament to both the power of human kindness and to the ability to connect with and help other living beings. In 1928 the author and her sister living in a village on the southern tip of Cornwall in the UK gave aid to an injured bird and by happenstance and their goodwill ended up founding a wild bird hospital providing sanctuary and where possible rehabilitation and release to thousands of avian patients. Through the author’s lively and charming account we see a picture of the personalities, habits, and innate intelligence of the different birds in their care and the goodness of the children and others who supported the sisters’ work. Although the 1962 book is long out of print copies can easily be found on the Internet. I highly recommend it for both enjoyment and inspiration.

I was just completely blown away by the generosity of these two sisters, who devoted their adult lives to saving birds and other animals who were exhausted, injured , sick or oiled, even seals, who were something of a challenge. They were so kind and loving, so full of humor and compassion. They approached each animal in their care as a unique individual, to be treated with gentleness and respect.

I really enjoyed this book. Not so much because of the writing style but more because of the divine hearts of the author and her sister. These ladies ended up creating a bird sanctuary by simply caring about the world around them. It's amazing to hear how they learned to communicate/bond with birds by being observant and caring. It's also cool to hear about the different birds/challenges they encountered. What awesome souls they are.

An account of the history and adventures of what began as a very ad hoc bird rescue by a couple of sisters, Dorothy and Pog Yglesias. Reading this is stepping into a different world - charming, honest and trustworthy. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there!
