The book helped me see the limits of always viewing interactions through the lens of transference. While that concept has value, it can reduce the present to a repetition of the past, something we cannot always prove.
It also offered a refreshing sense of openness. Though not mentioned in the book, it reminded me of Heidegger’s concept of Lichtung, a clearing where something new is revealed. Sometimes, in meeting another, an unfamiliar part of oneself emerges, not just an echo of past relationships.
It is a solid introduction to existential psychoanalysis. The book does not impose a method. It invites each of us to discover what works. That, too, is existential.
