It was love at first sight . . . or at least, love at first bloody nose.
Thor
If there’s one thing the Marines taught me, it’s that you don’t quit until you’ve completed your mission. Or you die trying. And by the way Clover Mason keeps shooting fire at me from those violet-colored eyes of hers, it just may be the latter. But like me or not, her Hollywood producer father hired me to protect her, and I will risk my life before letting any harm come to the grumpy recluse.
Clover
Sometimes I wish I were as brave as the heroines in the books I edit for clients. That doesn’t mean I’m ready for a six-foot, tattooed, red-head bodyguard who thinks he’s God’s gift to women shadowing my every move. But Daddy refuses to fire him, claiming that I’m not safe, and unless I want the entire neighborhood to see the large Viking lounging on his motorcycle outside my house 24/7, I’m going to have to let him in my home.
But when very real danger threatens to upheave my quiet life, I realize that Thor is the only one who can keep me safe.
The Grump’s Bodyguard, a closed-door reverse grumpy x sunshine novel, is book 3 in the Give a Bookish Girl a Biker multi-author series, a sweet romance collection of overlapping stories set in the picturesque mountains of Colorado. Alongside humor and faith, you’ll find sizzling chemistry between book-obsessed girls and their handsome bikers. Perfect for readers who prefer swoony, no-spice stories that sweep them off their feet.
Latisha Sexton is fast becoming one of my auto-read authors. She brings faith, humor, and swoony MMCs to the page. Add in an anxiety rep and age gap and I was hooked from page one. Can't wait to read more from her.
Clover is the daughter of a famous Hollywood actress and director. She moved to Colorado to avoid the chaos of her parent’s lifestyle. Clover has panic attacks and is happiest far from other people.
Thor is a retired Marine who works for the security company Clover’s father hired to protect her from a college from Hollywood.
Getting to know Clover is like pulling teeth, but they have a lot in common and the foreshadowing of their romance starts early and doesn’t really kick in until the end. It’s totally unbelievable, but the writing is good and this is a story for people who like Christianity in their book relationships. This is a three star clean romance.
From the moment Latisha started teasing this on Instagram, I was like, “Take my money!” 😍
Everything about this book was spectacular! The cover? Stunning. The romance? Adorable. The anxiety rep? Authentic. Gunnar & Thor’s relationship? Precious beyond words. She’s a grump, he’s a sunshine? Way to my heart right there.
Can you tell I’m in love? 🥰 Latisha never misses in writing swoony, heartfelt stories with inspiring faith content.
Okay, and the cameos??? The Denver Dragons, Ivan, AND MALCOLM JAMES (from In the Midst of the Darkest Hour)!! We were spoiled. 🤭
This grumpy/sunshine book was so much fun and made me smile all the way through. It also was very relatable for those of us who deal with anxiety. I definitely found myself nodding along with Clover many times. Fun fact: Clover's the grump in the relationship! That's always an interesting twist.
I love the tattoos, the bikes, and the friendships. Highly recommend!
THOR AND CLOVER! 🍀 I absolutely ADORED this story and everything about it. Thor's love at first bloody nose was the perfect kickoff to their whirlwind romance (even if we thought it was one sided for a bit.) And the banter these two shared was top notch. Clover's quirky T-shirts added a level of humor and Thor's protectiveness (that definitely went above and beyond his body guard duty) was incredibly sweet. Thor's relationship with his brother was so heartwarming and made me love him even more (and I mean the dude is already super lovable to begin with.) The suspense aspect only sweetened the plot and reached a satisfying finale. Every bit of this story was wonderful. From the bike rides, to the time with the group, checking out baby eagles, and so much more, I absolutely loved this book!
Thor & Clover just about took me out with their absolutely delicious banter and flirting from the start. An unforgettable meet-cute, the sweetest build of trust, a bit of suspense, fire chemistry, amazing side-characters, Down Syndrome & anxiety rep, realistic and heartwarming faith, and the sweetest ending make this an amazing read!
Wow, I love this book! It’s a sunshine-grump, Christian rom-com full of faith, humor, and heart. I found it fully captivating and incredibly well done. In fact, I read it straight through in one sitting, unwilling to put it down.
Overall, the tone of the book is uplifting and heartwarming. Both MCs have their struggles to work through, but both have a strong and active faith in God. The MMC is a veteran suffering from PTSD and the FMC experiences social anxiety and panic attacks. Their romance begins when the MMC is hired as a short term bodyguard for the FMC in response to a sudden stalker threat. The relationship is smooth and super sweet in its development.
I am so impressed with the author and her ability to seamlessly weave a strong Christian message into her story. Too often the messaging comes across as forced or preachy, but that isn’t the case here at all. There are many prayers throughout the book and a regular seeking of God’s will by both MCs, all of which felt sincere and natural. It’s beautiful watching the MCs encourage one another in their faith, and support each other in their struggles.
Highly recommended!
Content: There’s no foul language or sex, and the violence is minimal. The romance is limited to mildly descriptive kisses. There is a strong Christian message throughout the book.
Trigger warnings - PTSD from war, social anxiety and panic attacks, death of a parent and friend (prior to story)
4 stars Completed: Dec. 12/25 Series: Give a Bookish Girl a Biker, #3 Format: borrowed ebook (Kindle Unlimited)
Book #174 of 2025: This is book 3 of this romcom series. Clover has a fear of being recognized for her Hollywood parents. She’s living under another name as an editor for romance books. Sadly, she feels pretty alone because of that *and* her struggles with anxiety.
Clover’s dad hires a bodyguard for her due to an unhinged former employee who believes she is Clover’s mother. She is not pleased about Thor, the bodyguard, to say the least. Despite her mountain of misgivings, she becomes friends with him and finds herself feeling very safe. She also finds herself quite attracted to him.
Clover isn’t a pleasant person for the most part. It’s as though she runs people off before they can even have a chance. That aspect, in my opinion, is more due to people wanting to use her to get to her parents. Her anxiety is a big issue but I didn’t feel it was connected to her abrupt nature.
The development of their friendship, and Thor’s patience with her, is heartwarming. They actually balance each other and speak hard truths to one another when it’s necessary. My favourite scene is when they are on the mountain and she feels such peace and the beauty of nature.
All the stars!! Cannot express how much I LOVE THIS BOOK! Love the writing, the characters, the plot, the romantic build, the chemistry, the SWOON. Love, love, love. So incredibly satisfying….
More than a pretty cover, The Grump’s Bodyguard was a fun read that handled some themes that are close to my heart!
💜Bookish FMC AND MMC
💜Social anxiety rep
💜 PTSD/Veteran rep
💜Down syndrome rep
💜Faith elements
As a socially anxious girlie, I really appreciated the rep in this book. I felt so seen while reading about Clover’s and I loved that Faith was brought into the situation in an organic way and not at all preachy or as some magic fix.
I’m also a special needs mom to a boy on the spectrum so seeing Thor’s protectiveness and adoration for his big brother who has Down syndrome was just so heartwarming!
The suspense definitely reminded me of the first two books I read by Latisha and I enjoyed the action and the intrigue!
Bookish FMCs are so fun to read about because you will certainly find something or many things you can relate with them to on! There was this moment that reminded me of Kickstarter books.
“But, Thor, these are limited edition books with sprayed edges and interior art! I ordered them months ago and forgot when they were shipping. I can’t let them sit out. What if someone steals them? Or what if it rains? Or one of the stray cats comes and pees on the box?” I crinkle my nose in disgust. Laughing, Thor holds up his hands. “Okay, okay. We’ll go get your books...”
I think he’s a keeper!
I absolutely loved the Easter eggs near the end and I totally bumped certain books up on my TBR!
And ahhh, the bonus epilogue! 🫠 Trust me, when you preorder and this read book asap, you’ll want to check out that bonus epilogue at the end!
*Clean, contemporary romance *Grumpy/sunshine trope *Non-stressful suspense *Characters with a Christian faith-element to their growth arc (PTSD and anxiety attacks) *Books about bookish characters
Fans of Carrie Cotten will enjoy the unique epilogue and "Easter Eggs."
AHHHHHH I LOVED THIS ONE IT WAS SO CUTE!! I loved that he hummed hymns a lot and how she was nervous around some people but not around him and the protective vibe! but the age gap was a little funny. 11 years? seriously? otherwise it was great!!
The Grump’s Bodyguard was a joyride from start to finish. The writing was great, the characters were bursting with charm while still feeling like real people with real problems, the chemistry and banter were always on point. And the faith felt real and organic and vital to the story being told. I’ve been looking forward to Thor’s happily ever after since I met him in The Backpack Bride. He’s the flirty goofball of the group. But he's hiding a lot of pain and trauma behind all that humor, stemming from his time as a Marine. He's a bodyguard by trade, a biker for the love of it, and a caregiver for his older brother, Gunner, who has Down syndrome. And he’s just a delightful character in general. I so enjoyed his story with Clover.
Clover transplanted herself from L.A. to Denver to escape the spotlight. Her mother is a famous actress, her father a very well known and respected producer. Theirs is one of those rare marriages in Hollywood that lasts. As much as Clover loves them both, she just can’t handle the chaotic and crowded life that is par for the course in the movie industry. She suffers from severe social anxiety, which was phenomenally and compassionately portrayed by Sexton throughout the story. Clover has built this quiet--if lonely--bubble around herself. God pops that bubble, turning her life upside down. When her mom’s stunt double suffers a mental break and sets her sights on claiming Clover as her daughter, Clover’s dad hires a personal protection detail in Denver to watch over her. And who do you think ends up as her bodyguard? That’s right. Thor!
I loved the bookishness of this installment. Clover is an editor by trade, and one of her clients is Chantelle, the lone female biker among the group we follow in this series. Her story was told in a previous series, in the book Switch and Score, and is the source of inspiration behind this entire series. So this was a fun tie-in. Another fun inclusion is that a real-life author in the Christian fiction world, Carrie Cotten, is name-dropped alongside her newest release, The Valkyrie, by Clover early in the story. Sexton even did a joint giveaway of that book with The Grump’s Bodyguard. I love this sense of community that is so strong in the Christian fiction world, across genre divides. And that is beautifully showcased by the dropping of real world authors and titles into the story. One of these authors even shows up in person in the final pages. How much fun is that?
Then we have the romance. I have a thing for forced proximity, fake dating bodyguard romances. Which feels like a weird, super specific thing to have a thing for. But that itch was so satisfyingly scratched by this story. He falls first. And falls immediately. For Thor, it was love at first blow to the nose with the butt of a gun. But he can't act on those feelings, because he has to maintain his professionalism. Not to mention that there’s an age gap: he’s 32, and she’s only 21. But her sarcastic sense of humor—highlighted by her snarky t-shirt collection—never fails to make him smile. And the struggles she faces with her social anxiety makes his heart ache. Even though she has her defenses up, she can’t protect her heart from the red-headed, tatted up Viking for long. Theirs is such a sweet story.
I just loved this story so much. The overarching plot of Clover being stalked by her mother’s deranged stunt double might have taken a backseat to the romance, but I couldn’t find it in me to care. I just loved getting to know Clover and Thor and Thor’s family. Sexton crafted something delightful in The Grump’s Bodyguard. I’ll definitely be digging into her backlist. But first, time to continue on with this charming series. Next up, The Overdue Kiss!
Content: Mentions of mentally unwell character, incident of stalking, mentions of firearms, minor injuries, PTSD, mentions of death Flirtatious nicknames, a couple minty kisses Clean language
Favorite Quote: “You still with me, Love?” “Yes, and don’t think I haven’t noticed your little nickname there. We’ll deal with that once a psychotic woman isn’t after me.” I pull out of the tavern, Christian and Cai behind me. “I thought it was suitable.” I don’t tell her that her number is saved to my phone as “The Grumpy One.” I’m sure that will go over well.

When I first discovered that Latisha was part of the Give a Bookish Girl a Biker series, I was over the moon! And boy was I not disappointed! The Grump’s Bodyguard had me giggling and squealing and grinning like a loon. Alas, I was unable to read it in one sitting due to life and responsibilities, but if I could’ve, I would have finished it in one day!
Thor was the sweetest, funniest, and coolest bodyguard I’ve read about. I sincerely doubt I’ll find a bodyguard romance that I’ll love just as much, but I’m willing to be proven wrong. 😉
Clover was so prickly and relatable! I know, prickly is an odd word to use, but if you’ve read TGB, you’ll understand what I mean. Obviously, it’s a book and fictional characters, but I felt so seen and understood reading this book. The challenges and stress of trying to “fit” the mold while struggling with anxiety and being easily overwhelmed were portrayed so well and honestly was a bit of a balm to my own heart.
The action and suspense were so on par, and the sweet and minty romance did not disappoint! And the epilogues? **swoon**
If you’re looking for a sweet and delightful read that includes a bookish heroine, an endearing hero, and a touch of suspense, I highly recommend you check out The Grump’s Bodyguard and the Give a Bookish Girl a Biker series.
What a wild ride! I love that Latisha doesn't give us characters that are shiny and perfect but really relatable and realistic. The banter between Thor and Clover is perfection, and it allows them to build up some trust to tackle some really hard things together. They get to explore an attraction while there is danger and lines that can't be crossed, and it was worth every bit of the waiting we have to do to get what we want. 💋
Not only was I turning pages to discover what funny t-shirt Clover would wear next or what flirty remark Thor would make, but this story is both a slow burn and an instalove, and the pace of the story lets me, as an eager reader, get immersed in all the details.
I loved the return of other characters from the Give a Bookish Girl a Biker series and the addition of some new ones, namely Gunner, who was so lovingly portrayed as Thor's older brother with Downs Syndrome. Latisha tenderly explores hard topics like anxiety and PTSD through fictional characters that allow the readers to create real-life empathy.
What a great story!
The Grump's Bodyguard is a sweet and clean romance. I received a complimentary copy of the author's story to read and review. All thoughts contained here are my own.
The Grump’s Bodyguard by @sincerely.latisha Release date 4/7 Book 3 in Give a Bookish Girl a Biker series
Thor + Clover
First off, whenever I seen the name Thor was being used for the MMC I knew I had to read this haha! This is my 4th book by Latisha & I love her writing! This story was so good! Thor is hired to be Clover’s bodyguard & I am a big fan of forced proximity in books! His character is a lot of fun. He is flirty and even though he has a lot of stuff going on underneath the surface he is always smiling and making sure Clover is comfortable. Clover is anxious and doesn’t want to be around people. I loved getting to see her really trust Thor. He is fiercely protective and there were so many sweet moments in this one!
Thank you, Latisha for this book! 💞
Favorite quotes - Is she smiling behind her helmet? I don’t think I could handle a full smile from this woman without completely losing my heart.
I drop my binoculars and glance at Thor. “You seem to know a lot about eagles.” Thor grins as he taps his temple. “I know a lot of things.”
Content - No foul language Kissing only PTSD Panic attacks
I enjoyed this! The overall premise was great for a bodyguard meets biker romance. I’m really enjoying this multi-author series so far and the way the friend group is connected throughout. Think bookish FMCs and their supportive biker boyfriends.
This is my first book by this author and the narration style felt a little ping-pongy between POVs, if that makes sense. I guess, too-literal would be another phrase I would use. I was looking for a little more nuance, stylistically. I think even more suspense around the conflict would have been a good move too. I thought the ending was okay and I skipped the epilogue. Overall, I preferred the first half to the second! But thought all the tropes were done super well!
In this book: 11 year age gap, dual-POV, bodyguard/biker MMC, editor/bookish FMC, reverse grumpy x sunshine, anxiety rep, he falls first (and hard), fake dating elements
Content guide: clean for romance and language; infrequent and non-descriptive violence; medium amount of faith content
This entire book was *chefs kiss*!!! Loved Thor and Clover so much! From their very first encounter to the conclusion of the book, I thoroughly enjoyed this one!
I love the dynamic between Thor and Clover! They get under each other's skin but in such different ways. They are the perfect example of reverse grumpy/sunshine! Clover kept surprising me throughout the story. And Thor was just so swoony and perfect! I loved how they just understood each other so well and were each other's safe place. I could not get enough of them! The romance. The suspense. The banter! The cave scene! IYKYK
From page 1, I felt so many emotions in such a short time. The suspense was done so well for a rom com. The author, Sexton, did a wonderful job of creating layers and slowly revealing them to the reader. She included the faith elements so well and they were so relatable. Sexton weaved that in so well. Also, she did a fantastic job representing anxiety, PTSD, and Thor's brother Gunner, who has Down Syndrome. All the layers and representation made for such a beautiful story.
I am not sure my words in this review give this book the praise it deserves. I just loved it so much!
This one didn't really hit it for me. I couldn't really connect to it.
it was a sweet story, but I thought the FMC wasn't a grump. She was just a jerk to Thor, and I didn't like that. I get she had an anxiety, and trust issues, but you can still try not to be a jerk to someone perfectly nice to you. 🤷🏻♀️ The way she talked to him was so disrespectful, and he just kept falling more for her. Why? It's not cute.
I really liked the ending and even teared up a bit with Thor's backstory, and I really enjoyed Gunner and Thor's mom, but the for first half of the book, I was just really annoyed by Clover.
Really loved this reverse grumpy-sunshine love story. It had plenty of fantastic banter, loads of fun book references and a nice touch of suspense to keep things interesting. The faith of the MCs was also really well written and flowed naturally into the story. And while I won’t say that I’ve become a fan of motorcycles after reading this story, I can appreciate the closeness and trust that would be required for a couple to ride together. Definitely recommend this book for those who enjoy a story that’s got plenty of snark and snap to keep you laughing from page one to the end.
I received a copy of this story from the author via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
I’m ashamed to admit this was my first book by Latisha Sexton. Everything about this story was exceptional— the humor, the relatability of characters, and the teasing banter with snarky comebacks was a thing of beauty. There should be an award for that alone. The way Thor and Clover leaned into their faith without putting on a mask of perfection was beautiful. It was such a satisfying story. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
Such an amazing read everything about this book was perfect! And would highly recommend it to anyone who loves closed door yet swoony reads! THE FAITH THEMES MADE IT PERFECT! 😍
Latisha Sexton’s newest release has everything you could want in a sweet, swoony romance! I loved everything about this book. Irresistible MMC, feisty FMC, precious side characters, an engaging plot, witty banter, edge of my seat romance, and a solid faith element. It’s just the right combination of serious and swoony.
I love Latisha Sexton’s writing, and The Grump’s Bodyguard had all the aspects I enjoy in her books and then some! Tension, wit, humor, suspense, anxiety rep, and an absolutely tender ex-military, biker bodyguard who wants to honor God? Yes please!
Clover and Thor have such incredible chemistry, but there’s so much more to their story than simply chemistry. They both have struggles and deep hurts. They both trust in God and live out their faith. The way Latisha wrote their humanity into such a swoony story made the depth of their romance that much more powerful. I’m forever a fan, and The Grump’s Bodyguard is definitely on my re-read list!
This is Book 3 in the Give a Bookish Girl a Biker multi-author series, but the first book in the series I’ve read, and now I’m going to have to remedy that by reading the others! I have to read about Thor’s group of friends and their stories!
