Dedication: This book is a love letter to unlikeable women. For the women who are told to smile more, and frown less. For the women who have been told that they’re too combative. Too bossy. Too serious. This book is for the Girl’s-girls.Right from the prologue, I was SO IN with Jacqueline & Leo. At the beginning of every chapter, we’re given a tiny glimpse into the night they shared & it’s a super creative way of letting us learn more about their history. Andrea’s choice by unveiling their story in this way makes it extra engaging & I really liked it. These two are incredible & I absolutely LOVE them! Leo is protective, attentive, funny, caring & he compliments Jacqueline in the best ways by making her feel safe, seen & understood. Jacqueline is seen as the office “witch” & she struggles with non-direct communication. But behind that outer shell, she’s funny, smart, passionate & anyone who doesn’t take the time & care to understand her is really missing out.
“I don’t have anything to say to you...” I didn’t want to stay here. I wanted to run...The two of them together are spicy (with loads of consent, care & cuddles—which we love), adorable, neurodivergent & are fantastic partners to the other. She frowns at people often, but he loves her frowns. Plus, they both have amazing tastes in music: think early 2000s dance-pop. I genuinely think this is Andrea’s best book to date & I highly recommend this super fun, unique, entertaining & heartfelt romance.
“I see you’re still the same cold bitch you’ve always been.” ...Vincent still felt powerful putting women down. He still went out of his way to “win” arguments, even if he wasn’t actually in one... There was no alternate reality where he saw me as someone he liked or respected...
“Nah, mate,” Leo’s voice was dangerously low, a tone I’d never heard him use before. It gave me chills, “Speak to me how you spoke to her.” ...
“I wasn’t talking to you—”
“I don’t care,” Leo dropped his hold on my back, stepping forward so that half of his body was in front of me, shielding me from my ex, “You’re a grown man. You don’t talk to women like that... You want to talk like that? Talk to me. Not her. Never her.”
A smile spread across his face, and I grinned back at him. Admiring him. How beautiful he was like this. His pupils were practically blown out, hiding so much of his clear blue irises. His pale cheeks flushed with color from exertion. How his black hair looked so messy from my fingers running through it. I couldn’t wrap my head around this moment; how lucky I was that we were together like this.In terms of interconnected storylines, it's not required to read Written by a Woman before this one. Yes, we met Jacqueline & others at Sun Steer Tech in that story, but Andrea does a great job filling you in on anything you might have missed & how people know each other. There's also a crossover character from her first series, the What It Means series, but they simply exist in this world. There aren't details from the other stories about this character that are necessary to understand this book. Andrea totally takes care of you if this is the first book of hers you're picking up!
“Don’t do that... Don’t give me a smile I didn’t earn, Jacqueline... I am not interested in any fake smiles from you."I also have to say, I personally connected to Jacqueline on many different levels. The main one being her neurodivergence & reliance on music. I'm currently going through my own discovery to classify my neurodivergence, like she is. And while I'm never regarded as the one with chronic RBF, it's only because I go out of my way to make others feel comfortable, since I'm a people pleaser.
“… I know that when I’m not smiling, I look mad,” Jacqueline was whispering to me now. "If I don’t smile, people assume I am upset at them when I’m not.” ...
“If you tell me that you’re okay, I’m trusting you to tell me the truth... You don’t need to force a smile for me. I would much rather wait until I earned a real one. Besides... your smile is beautiful, but so is your relaxed expression. Your frowns. Even your glares... You don’t need to put on a mask with me. I want to see you. All of you.”
Watching her spin in and out of my hold, throwing me wide smiles with joy filling her expression, I realized something. I wanted everything that Jacqueline Williams was willing to give me. Because no one else would do for me anymore. She was who I wanted to run home to after work. She was the one I wanted to take to secret pop-up raves in the middle of nowhere. She was the one I wanted to sink into every night. She was the one I wanted to wake up to every morning. Jacqueline had once confessed that looking at me made her want, a sentiment I had come to fully understand. I wanted her. I wanted all of her. In every sense of the word.To see Jacqueline find someone who makes her better & makes her feel safe enough to be herself, her complete self with, it inspiring. Even being fictional, I 100% root for this couple. Thank you for another fantastic book, Andrea!
