Another mystery/detective book from the author of 12.12.12 and Bureau which I really enjoyed reading. Hence I had high expectations for this book too, but somehow I managed to guess the ending from the beginning. So it was basically reading to see if I'm right. I miss the part of having a surprising plot twist at the end. Nonetheless it's a good book.

** May contain some spoilers **

An emotionally engaging and a gripping tale of love, despair and the worst depths humanity could plunge down to. By far the best work by the author for me, after a disappointing experience with Bureau and a comparatively better story in 12.12.12. As a crime thriller, the pacing was good and apart from one glaring plot hole/loose end (that could have been easily skipped over since it did not drastically change the final outcome of the story), the plot was well-constructed though a bit predictable. There were instances where the exposition could have been more dramatized and presented in dialogue rather than being lengthy explanations, but the insights into the troubled characters make up for those moments overall.
The author has a way with words especially when it comes to metaphors, personification and similes, and helps paint a vivid picture of pivotal moments throughout. Felt that the plot twist regarding the fertility of a major character could have been revealed even later in the story, with a far more devastating blow to the reader as well the culprit. With a bit more polishing up, this is a story that could very well be a script for a David Fincher level cinematic/television adaptation, and the author works best when he has a handful of characters either with a shady past or broken personalities and regrets that the reader emotionally bonds with, in a setting that does not involve saving the whole world. Hoping to read more of that kind in the future since he definitely has the flair for it. High stakes do not automatically translate into engaging tales and sometimes less, is definitely more.

The kinda book that keeps me dangerously hooked till the last page. Last time it was Roses Are Red by James Patterson. I am happy that there's such an incredible author who write this kinda gripping novels in my mother tongue.

Easy, engaging, and quick read. The end twist is good. I must confess that I’m not a fan of Nathalie Muniye. So, throughout the read, I feel like I’m supporting the criminals 😂
