Night Shadow

Rate this book
A farmer always needs friends in the city who have his back . . .

Haley Stonecipher sells farm goods for Tom Savage during the day, and fights crime by night in League City. She strikes from the cover of darkness, leaving death and fear in her wake through the criminal underworld.

Ashley Thallus is a reporter, and an agent for Gwen’s mother. Sent to Phaethon to keep an eye on things, he gets caught up creating Haley’s media persona, which quickly goes viral.

Wink McKelway and Jinxie Malone find themselves under contract with the Ultima Mule Company, and a new robot pilot with some ideas of his own. The X’s and O’s are out for revenge, though, and still intent on grabbing their ship.

Meanwhile, Tom has successfully brought his farmhand’s syrup to market and is now refocusing on harvesting more star chunks for an expected energy crisis soon to hit Phaethon.

If only outside influences would leave him alone, maybe he could get more done around this place . . .

The Battle Rages . . .

This author is pure magic! Once again we have a continuation of the “Star Farmer” series
and the intrigue, humor, and suspense he brings to each story. Gliph has gathered a group of troublemakers and heads toward the Courthouse. He knew law enforcement was short-handed and saw only two deputies. And he was going to soon be teaching the merchants that the X’s and O’s were still a force to be reckoned with. He led his group to the Merchant’s District, noting that one of the deputies followed, probably reporting on what his group was up to. Among his group was Perretta Kirchhoff, a tall woman with excellent fighting skills who had no qualms about killing or injuring merchants. His people got ready for what was to come. Everyone was armed with a gun and force bracers to increase the damage done by their punches. Each member raised their banner cylinders describing what they protested and gathered additional attention. An officer approached to ask them to disburse since they did not have a permit for this public assembly. As four young people had to move into the street to get past, they sneered at the protesters… and Perretta broke a jaw, collar bone, and snapped a neck when chaos erupted.

Ash and Haley were dining at the back of the restaurant and unaware of the trouble until they were told about the angry protesters attacking people, leaving bloody bodies on the sidewalk. Then Gliph shot the deputy before he could react. While Ash Thallus, her reporter date and an agent for Gwen Wilder’s mother, ran to record the conflict, Haley called for Lisa to teleport her out of there so she could change into her Night Shadow black fighting outfit and mask, then had Lisa return her to the uprising. Ash saw her jump from the roof and began filming her. When he caught up to her again, she had Lisa teleport her out of there. What repercussions would this battle generate for Haley Stonecipher? Was Tom Savage ready to get further involved in the trouble? Or does he have enough to handle just trying to sell his syrup?

Night Shadow is the fifth book in Jaxon Reed's Star Farmer series. As I have said before each book in the Star Farmer gets better and better. Like the four books before it Night Shadow pulled me deep into its depth the moment I started reading it. The story flows along smoothly mesmerizing me with each word.

There is always plenty of action to keep the pages turning. Night Shadow drew me in when Tom brings his syrup to the city to sell, and a fight breaks out; Night Shadow steps in to help stop the fighting. Not everyone knows who Night Shadow is. Tom and a few more know, but they are not telling.

People are being attacked in the business district, leaving them dead. Why are these folks attacking people? Who are they? Why would anyone want to hurt someone? But not to worry, Tom; with the help of the Night Shadow, they will do whatever they can to keep the town and the people safe. They will do everything they can to find out who is attacking people.

As always I highly recommend Night Shadow to all science fiction fans! Grab a copy of Night Shadow today and join the adventure of life on a new planet!

Tom and the rest are back and trying to live and make a living. Danger, drama, good guys and bad guys causing trouble, and so much more happens in this one. Things were hopping and happening for everyone that I was kept amused and laughing through most of it. Plus that crazy cult is causing trouble again. And get to see more of Ash and Haley this time too. Just a great addition to the series that I enjoyed. I

The Continuing Lives of Tom and Gwen

"Night Shadow" is the fifth book in Jason Reed's Star Farmer series. At 236 pages it is a fast read. Since it is by Jaxon Reed you know it has been well-written and well-edited. This book, as were the first four in this series, and the thirty books in three other series in this League vs. Republic universe, are fast paced, with larger than life characters and situations that you can suspend disbelief if you let yourself. A thoroughly enjoyable read by one of my favorite sci-fi authors.

Another interesting installment of the space western series

In this series, some homesteaders are on quite the dangerous planet. There's a vigilante trying to keep people safe, sand dragons, a kitten, they're very angry rooster, several highly intelligent artificial people, and love is in the air. The plots get more complicated, and I'm enjoying the series a great deal. I will definitely read the next book in the series.

Tom, Gwen, and the gang have returned for the fifth installment in the Star Farmer series. Now that the Ever Riders have been dealt with, a new villain is emerging in Gliph and the X's and O's trying to sow anarchy on Phaethon. Meanwhile, Tom just wants to sell syrup and farm tools, and maybe corner the market on recharging energy packs.

Jaxon Reed has written another fun mashup of wild west, future tech, and now an avenging heroine. This series is a fun and fast paced read that gives a hint of what "frontier" life may be like when new worlds are colonized. As always, this book and all the others in the series come highly recommended.

Superhero violence

Alternate universe, SF advanced technology, OP MC, frontier planet, space opera

As the title says, much of the focus is on Haley, the vigilante superhero, as she works to kill the murderers plaguing the capital city during the planetary embargo. And Gwen's mom visits. Excellent editing. Quick read. Next!

When a girl with a yen to improve her world sees an injustice, what's she gonna do? She is going to become this frontier world's first vigilante superhero, that's what. This author manages to combine Jennifer Estep's Bigtime stories with Robert Heinlein's "Farmer in the Sky" and Louis L'Amour's western adventures. I don't know how he did it; he just does and makes it light and fun while still being clearly science fiction. The characters keep developing and I keep reading; I especially appreciate the meddling mother/matchmaker!

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

More of the Same

As the storyline continues, we learn more about Tom and Gwen, and the others. Life continues with a few setbacks along the way. Several battle scenes, mostly urban conflicts but rather graphic and with considerable collateral losses. Slowly the plot progresses and we are led softly into the next installment.

Still reading...

Well, things get copier for some. Villians get harsher. Good guys get harsher, but not sufficient to stop bad guys. Parents visit. Business expands.

In my opinion, other than occasional violence and hints of sex, most of the book's writing style is still pretty young.

I suspect children will enter the mix soon...
