If you ever wanted a spin-off based on the fact that somebody likes drawing Iruma in a suit, here it is. And it’s fine, following the general vibe of its original series with the inherent decency of Iruma and taking out the demons and switching to the mafia instead.

It’s… an okay sort of fine. As much as I like Iruma-kun, I think one series is entirely enough in my life and, while I’ll give this another volume, I can easily see myself passing on it. It’s not the series’ fault, this one is all on me.

Well, partially. Going into this without knowledge of the original series does seem like it would be far less enjoyable, since you miss out on the character tweaks and callbacks. What’s on offer is only ever better than average if you get the references.

Still, this really knows exactly how much Kalego to deploy (he’s barely tweaked from his original personality) and when I realized where the whole mascot thing (to say nothing of that amazing floor gag) was going, well, I was pretty okay with it.

But, does that still work if you aren’t familiar with what it’s riffing on? I mean, it does on some level, but I don’t necessarily see the point of reading this without going through the first series and, in fact, if you don’t like that you won’t find this different enough to recommend.

Otherwise it’s a new coat of paint on the same house and, yeah, I can’t work up too much enthusiasm even if it does an utterly solid job. I did enjoy this take on Opera and their gender fluidity though.

Also, speaking of new coats of paint, the art is actually a bit nicer than the usual style of Iruma’s regular book, so that did help things along. We’re missing more of the core cast and they might spice it up a bit more as well.

3 stars - again, totally fine, but not a series that especially excites me. Regular series? Big recommend. This one feels more like one designed to appeal most to the die hard fans and then produces diminishing returns the farther you get from that status.

I already loved the original series and the moment I learned that there was this mafia spinoff I wanted to read it! I'm so glad I got the chance to do it for free and I read it in a single sitting. First of all, the art is gorgeous and the action scenes peppered through the chapters really take advantage of the new artstyle with dramatic poses and crazy angles. Visually, it's stunning.
Plot wise it's also incredibly fun. I don't think it would hit the same with people who are not familiar with the original series, but if you are, it's fantastic. Iruma's characterization is on point and identical to the original series despite this being an AU. In this universe Iruma and Opera meet from the get go and grow up together 🥺 I love them so much.
This volume introduces Sullivan, Opera and Kalego. Clara and Alice are implied to be in the next volume which I will be sure to read.
A very fun read.
5 stars.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition 1 by Osamu Nishi and Hiroja is a lighthearted and energetic spin-off that plays to the series’ strengths—character chemistry and pure fun. The main character remains as lovable as ever, effortlessly drawing in both the cast and the reader with his charm and oblivious kindness.

One of the biggest highlights is how the side characters bounce off Iruma in hilarious ways. Their reactions, banter, and over-the-top antics make every interaction a joy to read, and the manga never takes itself too seriously, leaning fully into its comedic and chaotic tone. It delivers exactly what fans of the series would hope for: entertainment, character-driven humor, and a feel-good atmosphere that keeps you smiling throughout.

Rating: 4/5 stars – A great, fun read that thrives on character interactions and delivers a consistently enjoyable experience.

This is an alternate-universe take on the Iruma-kun franchise that swaps out the supernatural Underworld for the crime-based underworld of the Mafia. The artwork is strong, and a few of your favorite characters (most of the cast has yet to make their appearance) are dressed to the nines in stylish suits.

I was already sold on the premise before I started reading, so I didn’t need quite as much setup as the book delivered. I just wanted to jump right in and see Iruma meet all the Mafioso versions of the characters we know and love. Volume 1 is mostly focused on laying the groundwork for this alternate universe, so I can see the series gaining momentum in future volumes.

Opera, my beloved. They literally look perfect in every panel and Iruma is as cute as always. A very fun spin off and I like the focus of Opera's and Iruma's relationship in this one. Plus every panel is peak

Already being a Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun manga fan, I wouldn’t pass up spending more time with these characters. This mafia spin-off did not disappoint.

The best part for me was Opera. In the original Opera is a reserved, refined and sensible character. In this version they are the complete opposite which brough me so much joy.

The artwork is so neat and detailed mirroring the image of a mafia family.

I need more of this, and Volume 2 has Alice debuting, so exciting!

". . .Y'know, I think that anybody can be a good person. All you need is a full belly to start." - Iruma

Iruma's too precious and sweet for this world! Somehow, he's managed to survive in the slums and still hold onto his goodness. When he helps a strange old man by tending to his wounds and giving him the last of his bread reserves, Iruma didn't expect anything to come of it. But Don Sullivan, the leader of the Babel Mafia, decided Iruma was to be his grandson!

At age five Iruma is caught up in the whirlwind that is Don Sullivan and the rest of the Babel Mafia. He even gains a gofer named Opera! How did this happen?! Will Iruma be able to hang onto his gentle nature or will it be swallowed up? And did someone say he was to be the next in line for head of the family at age fourteen?!!

First of all! I absolutely ADORE "Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun"! It's a comfort series I could watch on replay, and I could read the manga forever! So, when I saw this, I just had to snatch it up! I love that Nishi still had her hands on this project and approved of Hiroja's work. Nishi even illustrated Iruma and company with suits on! I definitely agree with Hiroja and his love for the cast in suits!

I will say I was a little nervous that things would play out similar to the original series but there's a lot of differences in this series. But my man Kalego still has that same view toward Iruma and I love it! I'm a big fan of Opera and Kalego so seeing the two in suits and more of the main characters made my heart burst! I was laughing a lot with all the chaotic antics going on and the Easter eggs that were presented.

"It takes more than a good heart to be a good boss." - Kalego

Kalego's Iruma's private tutor and though he's harsh, he still conveys things to Iruma. Who gets them but not in the way Kalego was expecting. One of the outcomes to Kalego's lesson had me laughing and excited to see a familiar design surrounding Kalego. Watching Opera and Kalego snipe at each other like a cat and a dog was fantastic. Also, when Kalego was introduced the panel designs were so hot. I may have kept back tracking to really look at my man. . .

There's no language because it is "bleeped" out. We do have violence and bloodshed but nothing too crazy or gory. Opera and Kalego are intense forces to reckon with. They will never say it out loud but the two together in a fight are perfect. The competition and quips at one another only help to increase their danger.

I was utterly dying seeing all the characters in suits! It took me longer to read because I just had to keep flipping back to admire the artwork. Hiroja did a phenomenal job at bringing the old and known characters' back to life with his twists. This spin-off is amazing, and I want to continue reading! The cliffhanger has me hooked even more because Alice Asmodeus is about to enter the chat!!

Enjoy the new take on Iruma-kun and company as all of them don amazing suits and take on the underworld in odd ways that has Kalego needing to remain in bed to process things. Don't forget to give the author some stars!

A Special Thanks To Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for the ARC.

Before we begin this review, I would like to warn the reader, I have not read Osamu Nishi’s Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-Kun manga, nor have I watched the anime series. So, this will be a review done by someone familiar with the series, but as someone new to the Iruma-kun series. For past reviews, click here to read them.

The lovable Iruma-kun cast is back in an all-new spin-off story! Iruma is dirt poor, but a disgustingly cheery young boy growing up in a city slum. One day, Iruma gives the last of his food to an injured old man, and nurses the stranger back to health, only to find out that the elder gent is none other than Don Sullivan, head of the Babyl Mafia! Sullivan comes back and whisks young Iruma away, and begs the boy to become his grandson. And just like that, Iruma begins his new life as the next in line to lead a gigantic gang of demonic mafiosos in, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, IruMafia Edition!

In this new story, we’re trading the Demon world for a Mafia world, but it keeps the charm that keeps fans coming back for more. The groundwork in terms of the main cast and premise from the original series was built by Osamu Nishi is honored by Hiroja, the manga creator overseeing the script and artwork for this title but does contain more violence, Demon talk (again, no actual demons), and how twisted the Underworld can get. IruMafia Edition’s first volume does find a way to attract new readers by keeping the story at a good pace, but also building momentum for future volumes.

What I have enjoyed about this book is how well Hiroja has written and illustrated how dark and twisted the Underworld could be. In a sense, it shares various similarities to the Demon World when you get down to how it could the power and corruption can entice a person, how much power money, and influence are wielded in this new mafia world. But Iruma is still the same, even as an underboss, and still keeps that positive attitude that he is known for, as for the other characters, Opera was one of the characters that stood out at the beginning, who comes to care for Iruma differently than in the original manga. Sullivan is a lovable character, and Kalego is vastly different than his original counterpart.

Finally, the artwork in this manga is spectacular. Hiroja captured the emotional tones of each character perfectly, even down to their character designs and their suits (Iruma’s outfit is my favorite!) Aside from the action, and comedy, it has good morals and a heartwarming setting, despite being set in a criminal-themed world. I close this review out to say as someone only familiar with the franchise through clips and promotional material for the TV anime, I am impressed by this spin-off title and recommend it for new manga readers and fans of the Iruma-kun series. I look forward to reading the next volume.

Thank you to the publisher for this ARC of Iruma-kun IruMafia Edition. I don't read manga as often anymore, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I never read the original Iruma-kun series before, so this review is coming from someone who doesn't know anything about the original series. I was still able to fully understand what was going on in this. I appreciated that it had an immediate start and the plot started right away.

There are some additional points that I liked about this volume. The first thing I noticed was how much I loved the art style and character designs, Iruma was so cute! And Kalego was so 😍. The designs were actually pretty unique which I appreciated. The humor was probably my favorite part of the story, it had good series moments with funny little comic relief panels. Like the way the art sometimes drew Don Sullivan as an egg killed me every time.

I will say though there were a couple of censored words, which I normally don't mind but I did not understand the context for some of them because of it. I couldn't tell if it was a translated censorship or part of the dialogue/original art. That's really the only critique I have only because it confused me and threw me off a little.

I do hope in this spin-off we get to see some significant character development from Iruma. He's a great character but I look forward to seeing how his character changes and maybe even gets hardened by the mafia. This issue definitely made me interested to continue reading, so thank you again for this ARC copy!

I received this book from the publisher in exchange of an honest review.

I just couldn't resist this hilarious and epic looking book when I saw it. I still need to continue my journey through the world of Iruma, I only read the first volume of the OG series, so I may have missed some references, but for most I got the gist and that is the important bits. What if instead of a fantasy world Iruma is now in the maffia. Instead of an old demon and being sold to it Iruma gets adopted by Lord Sullivan who is now a don in the maffia. Yup! Opera and Kalego are there too and chaos ensues at every corner (those two hate each other). The first bit of the manga is when Iruma is 5, but we quickly go to him being 14 and becoming underboss. Yup. He is #2. There is lots of action, food, hilarious moments, merch, fun characters, and more. I just laughed and loved every moment of this one. Iruma is such a sweet character and I love how he keeps his happy self even in scary moments. I love how sweet he is towards people who work under him. Recommended!

I was able to read this manga through NetGalley as an ARC

I have surface-level knowledge of the original Iruma-kun manga. I think I saw a trailer when season 1 was announced, and since then I can point out Iruma & a few of his friends if I see art of them online. So I went into this not really knowing the relationships and full plotlines of the original work. And I really enjoyed this AU for a series I don't follow!

The set-up is almost like a fairytale, a good-hearted boy from the slums offers kindness to an old man & in return the boy is adopted into an affluent family. Except in this case it's the mafia. Iruma doesn't grow up hardened by the darkness of the underworld, but does start learning how to work with parts of it while sticking to his principles.

Like the original, it's a comedy series as well. Though I didn't have any bursting in laughter moments, it was a fun read. The artstyle is lovely, the action moments are cool, and Iruma is a sweetie that needs to be protected.

Thank you NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the ARC!

This was such a fun read! The original charm and humor from the original Iruma-Kun series is still true to form in this rendition of series with a twist! I love how the headmaster is now a Don and Iruma is just as lovable and goofy as his original counterpart, from trying to fit in with demons to trying to learn and become Don in his own way as chaos comes his way. I love how Opera has been given a bigger role this time around as Iruma's companion, and the way they go about making the two bond was just silly and wholesome. Kalego also gets introduced to us as well not just as Iruma's sensei, but also as Don Sullivan's Treasurer. He's still a bird in this series too, albeit in different form, and still has to deal with Iruma and friends antics, usually being the more logical one in terms of finances. Overall I'm super excited for what's to come and how Alice will be introduced to us in this version of Iruma-Kun!

I was so happy to be able to receive this ARC, as I have watched a bit of the original anime. This was just a sign to pick up the anime again and to read the original manga.

Anyway, I really liked this manga. I love the idea that instead of the demon world it was set in the mafia. Iruma is adopted by Lord Sullivan who is the Don of the Mafia (I think Lord Sullivan is one of my favorite characters, he is just so cute and funny). I loved how we are introduced to some of the og characters were introduced, aka Opera and Kalego (Love their banter). Not to mention our little cliffhanger with Admodeus popping up, can’t wait to see how he meets Iruma. I am very excited to see how this spin-off series will continue, and I will be reading the original series!.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition is a spinoff manga series, set in what I can only grasp as an alternate universe where instead of demons we're dealing with the Mafia. We follow Iruma as a young boy living on his own in the city slums. One day, he discovers an injured old man and nurses him back to health with just a little bit of medicine and his last loaf of bread. Soon enough, it turns out he's actually Don Sullivan, the leader of the Babel Mafia, and he wants to adopt Iruma as his grandson!

While I haven't read the original, Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition was a fun quick read. This spinoff manga series would likely be even more fun if you had knowledge of the original, but I don't think I missed out on too much, it does stand on its own. This first volume is a pretty fluffy story considering it's about the mafia. Iruma himself is very giving and soft towards everyone.

If you're a fan of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, the IruMafia Edition, is a delightful twist on the original. This spinoff reimagines Iruma's story with a mafia backdrop, introducing him as a kind-hearted boy raised in the slums who becomes the underboss of the Babel Mafia after helping an injured old man, who turns out to be Don Sullivan, the mafia boss of Red's Nerd Den.

The art is vibrant and stylish, with characters donning suits that add a fresh flair to their designs. The tone is darker than the original series, incorporating more violence and a grittier underworld setting. Despite this, Iruma's unwavering optimism and desire to ensure no one goes hungry remain central to the story Otaku USA Magazine.

While the first volume sets up an intriguing premise, it leaves much to be explored in future instalments. The blend of humour, heart, and action makes it a compelling read for both new readers and long-time fans of the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!!

Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-Kun! Is one of my favorite anime’s and when I saw an AU spin off I was very interested. There’s a lot of callback to everyone being “demons” and I was interested to see how it would look in a mafia AU. We get introduced to Sullivan, Opera, and Kalego. Opera is one of my fave characters so I was so happy to see them! They seem to have a bigger role here than they do in the original series. I’m so excited to see how everyone else looks. We get a little tease of As-Kun at the end. I can’t wait to see Clara too. Like the friend group is going to see so cute and funny in this universe. Iruma is just as sweet, silly, and big hearted as he is in the original series. He always just wants to help and do what he can for others no matter what. This series is so wholesome and always makes me grin and laugh. I highly recommend this and the original if you enjoy cute supernatural anime!

Iruma is living in the streets when he is adopted by Don Sullivan head of the Babel Family Mafia. As the Don's grandson Iruma lives a pretty spoiled life surrounded by his teacher Kalego and bodyguard Opera. Now, at 14 though Iruma has been appointed second in command of the whole family and he's realizing he's got a lot to learn still!

Omg I am not sure how Hiroja managed to make Iruma more adorable than it already was but he did and I am in absolute love! Hiroja managed to take everything wonderful about the original and drop it into a completely different world without disrupting really anything. Honestly, if I didn't know it I wouldn't have realized this was written by someone else.

I am definitely going to be continuing this series!

As always thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha for the eArc!

I loved the first 2 seasons of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, so I was really curious to see how this mafia take on the series would go. I loved this first volume.

The first chapter was so adorable! I loved seeing little 5 year old Iruma interact with people and get adopted by Sullivan. The next chapters, now with Iruma at age 14, were very fun too. Opera is a favorite of mine in the anime, so I love how prominent of a character he was in this volume. While he and Kalego both seemed different than they are in the anime of the original series, I still felt like they were in character, if that makes sense. And I'm so excited for Asmodeus' introduction in volume 2.

I received access to an eARC of volume 1 in exchange for my honest review, and now I want to purchase a physical copy when it's available. I've very excited to continue this series.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC!

As a fan of Welcome to Demon School Iruma-Kun, this was a great spinoff! It was a creative take having Iruma being the new second in charge of the Babel Mafia family! He's to pure and sweet, meanwhile the rest of the family is dark and brooding. The humorous storyline is still there under all the violence and dreary tones of this storyline. Memorable characters such as Opera and Caligo are along side Iruma as his bodyguard and tutor as he tries to navigate his way into helping run the family with his grandpa.

Overall, it was a really interesting read with a darker tone than the original series. But it still had the charm that won me over when I read the Demon School series! I can't wait to read what happens next and see how the lovable characters that I've grown to love are transformed into mafia members!

A 3.5 stars read.

Iruma and the gang in mafia setting?! Yeah take my money. No magic. No Devil. Iruma in the human world, in real world. Yeah it's going to be interesting, well it was interesting in the end but the beginning kinda dragging, maybe it's because I already knew Iruma and his story in the Demon School, so it's pretty much the same but with different setting, if I haven't read the Demon School series maybe it's going to be more fun for me. After the dragging beginning, it got more interesting and exciting, especially when Opera and Kalego made appearances, and then Fluff-Ego and at the end got a glimpse of Asmodeus, can't wait to know his characters and meet Clara and the others in this mafia setting. Is not as funny as the Demon School series but still entertaining and I still really enjoyed it and definitely will still continue this spin off series.

This is just an adorable adventure featuring a naive young man with a good heart who just so happens to be adopted into a mafia family. The first book is the strongest of the stories, where five year old Iruma doesn't know or understand what's going on while the reader does, allowing for more humor. The second and third story have a teenage Iruma -- who still has a good heart -- but focuses more on hi jinx.

Apparently this is an AU of an existing series, but having not read the original, I can only judge this one based on what there is to read, and I have to say I think it's a lot of fun. The manga is well drawn, the action scenes easy to follow, and the characters well designed. If you give this a try, I hope you enjoy it! Thank you so much to Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC!

As someone who had watched Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun, I definitely love this mafia version as well and couldn't have thought of anything better than this version.

I really love how the story goes on. Although it is super similar to how it was in the original version, this version also had some alterations and add ons that really fit and made their characters more interesting.

Also, can I just say how fine they made Kaelgo and Opera in this version 🫦 BECAUSE THEY WERE SO DAMN FINE, not to mention Alice as well at the very end 😫

I have yet to read the manga of Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun, but hopefully, soon ✨️

Overall, super love this 🩷

Thank You, NetGalley and Kodansha Comics

The first volume was amazing. The storyline is amazing because it does take some of concept from Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun. The art style is just beautiful. The detail is magnificent. Because everything is detailed throughout the story, especially the characters. The character designs. I love them so much. And for the story itself, I like the fact that it shows Iruma doing everything he can to make sure everybody has something in this world. And that he is willing to fight for it no matter what. And that he’s gonna have so many people that are gonna gravity to him, and standby side to help him complete his dreams. I cannot wait for the next volume to come out in English.

This manga is a spin-off that puts the characters of the original manga in an alternative universe where they are part of a mafia syndicate.
While the premises sounded fun and there definitely were comedic moments, this manga lacked a certain depth for me. Every chapter is a separate standalone adventure and I feel like a multiple chapter arc would've given more room to proper character development. Due to the introduction from the creator at the beginning of the manga, I thought the story would have a deeper and darker layer. Unfortunately that wasn't delivered.

I did like the art style overall. If you're looking for a quick read where you don't need to commit to long haul reading of a manga series, you might possibly enjoy this.

Absolutely loved this spinoff of Welcome to Demon School Iruma-kun!
There was a mafia theme throughout and the personalities of the characters in this spinoff stays true to their personalities in the main story. It is a fun read, flows well, and the art style is similar to the main story's. Thus far, the characters are introduced one at a time and have different situations where they are affected by Iruma's actions. Volume one left off with who will be entering the series next. As you can imagine, Iruma doesn't seem be fit for the position of second boss, but he is doing things his own way.

Will definitely be continuing this spinoff .

GET IT NOW! You are on the fence, its in your cart. Just do it. Iruma-kun, is one of the best Manga/anime to come out in the past several decades. 1 CHAPTER IN and its an instant buy. Even if just the first chapter was all I got for my money I would still buy the next and the next. Its got the action, comedy and Heart, that Iruma-kun has made its defining golden seal on the industry and on the culture of manga and Anime itself.

(This is a what if instead of a demon school he was taken in by the Mafia) Think Spy X Family.
Its just a perfect same difference. I would pay most anything to see this animated as well. IRUMA-KUN IS RETURNING THIS FALL TOO just fyi ;)

Iruma is adopted as a grandson by a mafia don and becomes the heir to the entire syndicate, acquiring new companions and a goal to follow his dreams.

I'm not familiar with the original series but I can totally appreciate the creative desire to want to draw more characters in suits. Following this, I'll definitely pick up the next and the original series as well. Iruma is a refreshingly sweet protagionist with his aim of making sure that everyone has a full belly and sees the good in everyone. Devoted right hand person is one of my favourite things to see in a book and Opera is such a delight, grumpy and violent at first and dedicated to a fault afterwards, something which spills over to the other characters in Iruma's family. It's a really fun read!

I loved the original version of this story, and this retelling was such a fun and creative twist! Instead of being transported to a demon world, the main character ends up becoming part of a crime family. It was such a treat to see all the familiar characters reimagined as members of a crime syndicate, while still keeping their core personalities intact. The fresh setting added a new layer of excitement, and I can’t wait to read the rest and see how the other characters are portrayed in this version!

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition 1 by Osamu Nishi was a true delight of a manga volume. As someone who is a big fan of the original series, I had high expectations for this mafia version of it, and it did not disappoint. All the same characters we know and love are here so far, just with a yakuza twist! It was funny and fresh and nostalgic all at once and I loved being back with these characters. Recommend whether old or new fans of this world.
