Pleasant to read and very accessible despite the tremendous amount of research and witnesses. Therapeutical for any victim of female-led violence, where emotional abuse can become incredibly sophisticated and unbelievable to whoever hasn't got such a complete picture of all the lies, gaslighting and escalating which support such behaviour. Much needed.

-----------------

Inimaginable, grotesque, baffling. Those are some of the words that came to my mind while reading most of each new spin that Amber gives to the drama that she produced, either because reality continues to elude her affirmations, or even just like that, with no other visible reason than the will to take it out on anyone she feels deserves to suffer. Because Amber does not even pretend to believe in peaceful communication, and that's one of the thing that made people who didn't know her personally see the real person under how she presented herself during the public trial in Fairfax. That moment happened when she answered a question as to why she sent humiliating pictures of Johnny Depp to friends. I cite (Google-translated):

"Aren't you afraid that Johnny-opiate, or the monster, as you called him, might be upset that you sent this photo to your friends? Vasquez had asked. Of course, he could have been against it. Of course, it's scary. Of course, Heard had replied. But that didn't stop you from sending the photo? Vasquez had persisted. Why would it stop me? Heard had replied with a slight air of defiance, and that air of defiance, that answer, had been enough for Camille Vasquez, she had gotten what she wanted, the jury had seen, Vasquez had said nothing more for six or seven seconds, she had let the sentence hang in the courtroom, amidst the silence, and then she had moved on."

This right oneself gives to hurt someone on purpose either for revenge or under the excuse of victimisation, this, along with the need to control their partner, is the core definition of a potentially dangerous and violent spouse.
And that's what the lawyer managed to reveal to the audience, the judge and the jury.

You can see from my review that I mainly focus on the domestic violence aspect of this whole story, and as everyone has different life experiences and opinions, so will they tend to read that book from different perspectives, I'm therefore interested to read more and different reviews.

In conclusion: it's rare to get such an intimate and documented peek at a whole relationship. The format is also very interesting: not an autobiography, not a fiction novel, but also not a documentary or a historical biography. Something hybrid between all that, and therefore more than the sum of its parts. It could potentially appeal to a lot of readers who like either of above cited genres that use a relationship as main subject, or to those who like the author and myself, spent some considerable time following this wtf story, trying to make sense of it all. I believe this book will certainly help those the most.

Also, for people who don't read French, don't despair! It's possible to auto-translate what you're reading, by searching within the options of your e-reader, for example.

3.5 stars rounded up. I think the low rating here is rather unfair. The book is a fairly sly bit of docu-fiction that's been assembled from available testimonies, recordings and two court proceedings in the Heard/ Depp and presents an unwieldy, yet hypnotic summary of the case. The author admits to being in the pro Depp camp, but the way testimonies and differing viewpoints line up, it was the first piece of media that actually made me see Heard in a human way and even somewhat empathize and/ or understand her. Which doesn't mean to say that she necessarily makes a winning impression, but neither does Depp. The book more or less shows both as spoiled children that permanently bring out the worst in each other and reads like an especially acidic season of White Lotus by the way of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf. It's ultimately both fascinating and incredibly sad. The portions that concern the authors' fascination with the case kind of fail to make a really pertinent case for themselves. Nonetheless, this is a sobering, frightening and often despairing read.

I know that the Johnny Depp/ Amber Heard case was complex, but the novelist couldn’t help but name hundreds of names of people involved in the case. This was most confusing. Also, the novelist seems to take sides with Depp, and I would have prefered a little more neutrality.
