In Bound by War, the second book in Kai the Demon Slayer Chronicles, Kai has turned her back on Coetus, determined to forge a new path. But as she navigates the treacherous landscape of newfound power, Kai must confront her deepest fears and learn who she can trust.
Kai delves into new realms filled with formidable enemies. Uniting for her cause, Kai must learn to master her Wrath before it consumes her entirely.
As she falls in love with the Prince of Death, Kai's heart is caught in a deadly dance between passion and war, death and life. In a world where alliances shift like shadows, can she truly trust anyone, including herself?
M. N. Beck is an avid reader and loves a fearless FMC. Alpha males make her swoon and usually find a place in her writings. When she's not reading or writing, she is chasing her two wild boys around the country side.
I loved the first book in the series but this book delved deeper into the characters backstories which I really appreciated. I felt like the plot progressed at a steady speed with slightly less action than book 1 but it sets up nicely for book 3.
Bound by War really pulled me in with its blend of intense action and emotional depth. Kai’s struggle to control her power while navigating shifting alliances felt incredibly compelling. Her relationship with the Prince of Death added a layer of complexity that kept me hooked, especially as love and trust became just as precarious as the battles she faced. I enjoyed the world-building and the way the story balanced dark, high-stakes moments with Kai’s personal growth. It’s a gripping read that had me rooting for Kai the whole way, and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys strong, flawed characters and richly woven fantasy tales.
I loved reading this book! Cool creatures, great battles, new worlds. I couldn’t get enough of the characters and their great personalities! Can’t wait to continue Kai’s kick ass story!
Raised to be a “slayer” in a cult run by an evil man called Coetus, Kai is a fierce warrior and also happens to be the daughter of “ Wrath” an immortal being. She is also in a physical relationship with “Death” another immortal and is preparing for war.
This world the author introduces seems at first like a strange fantasy landscape until they drive in a car to Chicago and use a burner phone.
Exploring this alternate earth that exists after a societal collapse is a fascinating journey. I do recommend starting with the first book but it’s a good read.
Fighting for Survival in a World of Magic and Mayhem
Reading Bound by War as a devoted YA apocalypse fan was an exhilarating experience from page one. The blend of post-apocalyptic tension, supernatural creatures, and heart-stopping action had me completely hooked. I loved witnessing Kai’s fierce determination as she charged headfirst into battles against zombies, witches, and even werewolves. Her banter with Kevin added a refreshing humorous touch, contrasting the darker undertones of impending doom. Meanwhile, her emotional ties to Brahm provided real depth and heartbreak that made the struggle for survival feel astonishingly personal. The story seamlessly picks up from the first book, ensuring no gap in the timeline—perfect for readers like me who crave continuous adrenaline. M.N. Beck’s descriptive writing style made it easy to envision every dramatic confrontation, every hidden safe haven, and every sly flirtation between Peter and Beth. In a genre crowded with dystopian tales, Bound by War stands out with its multi-layered characters, detailed world-building, and a plot that never loses momentum. If you’re a fellow sci-fi enthusiast hungry for intense battles and compelling character arcs, this series is an absolute must-read!
Hilarious that the writer placed its seller in New York, the home of the hustlers! That very idea, to me, deserved its own story. Not that Kai and Brahm weren’t more than entertaining, it’s just that my mind to a flight of fancy with the notion of the physical vanity it would require for one to consider voluntarily becoming a vampire just to preserve their youth and beauty!

Honestly, if you haven’t started the Kai the Demon Slayer Chronicles yet, what are you even doing?! I just finished Bound by War and my head is still spinning. Picking up right where the first book left off, we see Kai totally turning her back on Coetus to forge her own path. I absolutely love a "fierce female lead" moment, and watching her navigate her newfound power while trying not to let her Wrath consume her was so intense. A few things I obsessed over: The Romance: Can we talk about the Prince of Death? The chemistry and that "deadly dance" between them had me holding my breath. It’s that perfect mix of passion and high-stakes drama. The Crew: The banter with Kevin is such a vibe - it adds that much-needed humour when things get dark. And seeing the "sly flirtation" between Peter and Beth? Perfection. The Action: M.N. Beck really knows how to write a battle scene. Whether Kai is taking on zombies, witches, or werewolves, the pacing is 10/10. If you’re into YA apocalypse stories with deep world-building and characters that actually feel real, you need to grab this. It’s gritty, it’s emotional, and that ending... I’m already desperate for the next one!

Bound by War by M.N. Beck is a compelling and emotionally charged story that explores the deep impact of conflict on both the battlefield and the human heart. Blending elements of romance, resilience, and personal struggle, the novel captures how war not only shapes nations, but also the lives and relationships of those caught within it. At its core, the story follows characters who are forced to confront unimaginable circumstances. Beck does a strong job of developing these individuals, giving readers insight into their fears, loyalties, and inner conflicts. The emotional depth of the characters makes their journeys feel authentic, especially as they navigate themes of love, sacrifice, and survival.Bound by War is a powerful read for those who enjoy stories that combine romance with historical or wartime drama. M.N. Beck delivers a narrative that highlights the strength of the human spirit, even in the darkest of times.
This book’s strengths are its relentless pacing and genuine emotional weight, anchored by an intriguing plot. Kai’s struggle to master her power while navigating constantly shifting alliances is especially compelling. The world-building also highlights the author’s creativity.
That said, grammar issues from time to time pulled me out of the story. Here are three examples:
· Adrenaline and shock courses through my veins… (should be “course”, not “courses”)
· Unable to fight it any longer, sleep steals over me… (dangling modifier)
· I wet my lips, my tongue and throat parched, asking, “What ceremony?” (awkward with “asking”)
I've loved both books in this series. This book had less action than the first but kept an interesting plot line. I really enjoyed getting back stories for the characters. Kai has been through so much and I can't wait to see her in all her glory. The ending left me on an emotional roller-coaster. I need the next book ASAP!
This was such a an exciting sequel. Once again the author created a page turner, I couldn't put it down. When you put strong FMC and apocalypse in one book what more could you ask for. I was as to see it end.
Who doesn’t love werewolves well you’re gonna love this book. It is a book too. I recommend reading them in order is a definite page Turner. I didn’t put it down till I finished. It’s a must read for anybody that loves this gentry. The storyline is great. the characters are amazing and the world building is Fantastic and I would definitely recommend this book and this series to everyone and looking forward to book 3.
