The first three books in von Ziegesar's Gossip Girls series are packaged together in this paperback boxed set. Includes "Gossip Girl, You Know You Love Me," and "All I Want Is Everything."
Cecily von Ziegesar is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Gossip Girl novels, upon which the hit television show is based.
Cecily von Ziegesar was born in New York City. Her childhood dream was to grow up to be a ballerina; she began lessons at age 3 and auditioned for the School of American Ballet at age 8, but was rejected.
As a teenager, von Ziegesar commuted to Manhattan at 6 a.m. to attend the Nightingale-Bamford School. After graduating from Nightingale, von Ziegesar attended Colby College before spending a year in Budapest working for a local radio station.
Von Ziegesar returned to the United States to study creative writing at the University of Arizona, but dropped out shortly thereafter.
Back in New York, while working at book-packaging firm Alloy Entertainment, von Ziegesar became inspired to create the Gossip Girl series, which follows the lives of privileged teenagers in New York. The series climbed to the top of The New York Times best-sellers list in 2002. A spin-off series, The It Girl, made the list in 2005.
The Constance Billard School for Girls in Gossip Girl is based upon an exaggerated version of von Ziegesar's alma mater, Nightingale. She also culled events from the book from the lives of her extremely wealthy friends, as well as her own life as a perpetual gossip.
Voilà voilà, You know you love me, Xoxo Gossip Girl
The NLS thoughtfully collected the first four Gossip Girl books into one recording -- 900-odd pages I burned through in a few days. Caveat: I was a huge (not always ironic) fan of the tv series. The books are so much better -- more sophisticated, more snarky, fairly foul-mouthed and not at all badly written. Characters share names and some details with the CW series but are better drawn, more richly conveyed. An ostensible guilty pleasure I just don't feel all that guilty about. Whatever -- "You Know you love me. XOXO."
This series follows several different students in private high schools in New York City. Most of them are over-privileged and obnoxious. At best, they are stereotypical. That’s not to say there is no appeal. I can definitely see how the average Mid-Western teenage could get lost in the Gossip Girl world. I just don’t know if kids like this really exist. They live in a world where money is no object, the bars never card, the parents don’t parent and there are no consequences for anything. Again, I understand the appeal… really.
Part of me liked the wild, no holding back of von Ziegesar. Teens really do deal with drugs, alcohol, sex and eating disorders. Her incorporation of technology is also brilliant. But in real life, there are things like parents and consequences. In real life drugs are not glamorous, sex sometimes leads to pregnancy or STD’s, binge drinking sometimes leads to alcohol poisoning, intoxication while driving sometimes leads to accidents, smoking sometimes leads to cancer, bulimia sometimes leads to real health problems, bank accounts sometimes run out of money. Perhaps I’m too much of a realist. I just think this world is too much fantasy to be interesting.
Oh, and the cheating POV’s are enough to give you whiplash!
Overall, I give Gossip Girl…
Plot – 2 bookmarks Character Development – ½ bookmark Love Scenes – ½ bookmark Craft of the Writing – 2 bookmarks (Hated the POV shifts, sometimes paragraph to paragraph, but liked the incorporation of the website.)
Dream Cast (otherwise known as who I pictured while reading) – I’ve never seen the TV show, but I did check out the cast on the IMDB sight. I think it was fairly well cast, although Taylor Momsen doesn’t fit Jenny and in the book, Vanessa has her head shaved. I guess I don’t have anything to add. I wasn’t invested enough for my imagination to roam too far off the TV show.
Ok, lo so.
One of my guilty pleasures. These books are very entertaining, not very thought provoking, but sometimes it's nice to just just be whisked away to another world and not have to think about anything serious. I would not recommend these for young girls simply because of the sex/drugs/drinking that are involved in the story lines.
This is definitely NOT for the junior high set and it is definitely NOT like the TV show. The characters are the same but that is about it. They are quick reads but there is too much non-PG-13 action in the books for younger teens. It gives a nice insight into how the other half lives, albeit somewhat fictional (I hope!).
Well when I started reading this book I was more hoping to read the details of my favorite tv show. Later on I realized from spoilers that chuck bass will never be the man of my dreams the way he was on the tv shows and when I read the summary of the actual story, I didn't like it very much. So I just stopped in the middle of the third book. I didn't find it as interesting as the tv show.
they're fun books, but i'm necessarily addicted to them. the television show is doing a good job of portraying some of the characters, although jenny is DEFINITELY not the same girl as she is in the books...
definately my guilty pleasure, haha. it's such a typical teen drama, but you have to love it. the sad thing is they are actually really addicting i mean, we just have to find out who gossip girl is! actually i think the series has ended, but they never told us. My guess? Serena and Blair, together.
I'm working on reading the first book in this series, and, so far, it is a really good story! Hopefully, the rest of the series will be just as good. We'll have to see...
Much better than the silly tv show, though now that I think of it, entirely forgettable. I suppose it is great at what it is meant for - trashy entertainment.
