Since 2023, the Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction has challenged writers around the world to break the writing ‘rules’ in compelling new ways. This inaugural anthology showcases the 30 winning and shortlisted stories across the first five rounds of the competition – each with its own take on creative storytelling. Marvel as these authors embrace adverbs and clichés, eschew dialogue tags, pump out purple prose, and head-hop their way to a series of colourful, beautiful, and sometimes disturbing pieces. Enjoy author insights and inspiration plus commentary from the Not Quite Write judges, and wave goodbye to any limits you thought existed in the world of flash fiction.
Ed and Amanda are dedicated to fostering creativity and that shows on every page of this fantastic anthology. Many writers are new and unpublished, so get your copy today to be one of the first to discover the "next great thing"!
You will laugh, you will cry, you will probably scream whyyyyyy! (But in a good way)
There are so many amazing stories in this collection, and some very dear friends too. To say I’m proud of them and their achievements is an understatement. And while my own darling, “Talking Heads,” did not make the cut, you can be assured, dear reader, that your voices have been heard and that the first installment of “The Misadventures of Johnson and Johnson” will be released sometime next year. I will forever be grateful to Amanda and Ed for helping bring this idea to life.
I'm a huge fan of the podcast! I enjoyed reading about the origins of NQW.
I am lucky enough to know some of the amazingly talented writers featured in this anthology. How lovely to hear their words read aloud and then read them in print!
Looking forward to another year of NQW with the hilarious Ed and Amanda. Write on!
This anthology compiles winning and shortlisted entries from the Not Quite Write Prize for Flash Fiction, which launched in 2023.
Entrants to this competition are given 60 hours to write a max 500w story which incorporates two prompts and one anti-prompt. The anti-prompt is a unique spin on the flash fiction competition, asking writers to break a firmly established writing "rule", leading to both unbounded creativity and total chaos (which is the same thing, really). As such, the winning and shortlisted entries are unique, and I personally have found this competition to be both very inspiring, and a lot of fun.
The anthology not only includes the stories, but also includes insights from the authors on how the story came about, and notes from the editors on why this story in particular resonated with them. It's a valuable insight for anyone interested in entering writing competitions.
There is also an accompanying podcast, which I can't recommend more strongly.
This book is a masterpiece of hilarious, witty, can't-put-down short stories that has something for every fan to read. This is the product of a podcast by the same name, of which I am a huge fan, which holds quarterly writing competitions. Coupled with a ticket to their next writing competition, this is a brilliant gift for an aspiring writer.
