The Linfield Ladies #2

The Viscount's Lady Novelist

Rate this book
What happens when you combine an independent lady novelist, a viscount determined to restore his family fortune, and a complicated past?

Harriet Linfield is a lady novelist who has been disillusioned by love. She sets out to write more realistic tales about the emotion when she returns home to Linfield Court for the summer. Vowing to avoid any romantic entanglements along the way, she focuses instead on her writing and her plan to turn the estate she inherited from her uncle into a refuge for orphans.

Oliver, Viscount Wentford, is determined to restore his family fortune. But his plans for the estate he inherited are in direct opposition to the wishes of Harriet, his new neighbour. Upon meeting her, Oliver is amused when, in response to his provocative comments, she informs him that she intends to make him the villain of her next book. But his amusement swiftly turns to dismay when circumstances align to show him in that exact light.

When an enemy comes back into Harriet's life, she sees that love isn't as clear-cut as the romantic tales she pens. But will the viscount manage to discard his villainous mantle to become Harriet's real-life hero?

*Please note that The Viscount's Lady Novelist is a sweet and clean traditional Regency romance.

The Viscount’s Lady Novelist is a charming and entertaining historical romance by Alissa Baxter that follows Harriet Linfield, a novelist, and Oliver, Viscount Wentford, as they meet and fall in love. Oliver has many plans to restore his family fortunes, and marrying Harriet is a step toward achieving his goals. However, Harriet doesn’t wish to be married and is determined to open a refuge for orphans on the estate she owns. She has much more romantic notions than Oliver, and when she hears of his plans for her land, which will foil her own dreams, Harriet becomes more convinced than ever that they are not meant to be. However, when the past comes back to haunt her, Oliver might just prove his feelings are more than convenient.

Oliver and Harriet have a wonderful romance. Burned by love in the past, Harriet is slow to trust herself and others. She questions her judgment, and though she has romantic notions, she struggles to embrace her feelings. Oliver is similar in fighting his feelings, though he is much more open to marriage than Harriet. Of course, the more time they spend together, the more they understand and admire each other. I like how their relationship develops, and how well they get to know each other. Plus, their chemistry is fantastic, as is their banter!

Harriet and Oliver have a great connection, and some of my favorite scenes were when the pair talked about things that interested them. I especially liked when they shared their mutual love of literature. There are so many great literary references and discussions about books throughout the story. Jane Austen’s works, Gothic stories, and more are discussed, and I love that the protagonists analyze several beloved classics. Oliver and Harriet are intelligent and astute, and their mutual interests bring them closer together.

I also really liked the secondary characters, especially Harriet’s siblings. They are all unique, and together they are hysterical. They are a large and boisterous family, each with their own interests and pastimes, and you can tell how close they are by the way they talk and tease each other. The siblings especially have fun times together, and the family bond is strong. Yet, as well as they know each other, these siblings still learn new things and come to understandings over the course of the story. I like that they realize there are many sides to the same story, and each of their experiences, even in the same situations, are different. You can tell they all love each other and want the best for each other, which is really heartwarming.

There is also a bit of intrigue in the story as Harriet’s past comes back to haunt her. It’s an interesting and suspenseful part of the story, and it offers great insight into the rules, constraints, and inequities of the time period as Harriet handles potential scandal, blackmailing scheme, and ruination.

Though this is the second book in The Linfield Ladies series, it can easily be read as a standalone, and I would definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy historical romance. Special thanks to Historical Fiction Book Tours and the author for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.

The Viscount’s Lady Novelist is my first read by Alissa Baxter but it most definitely won’t be my last. I was quickly charmed by the swooniness of the romance and by the wittiness of the banter between Harriet and Oliver. It also made me smarter. For instance, did you know that a ha-ha is not just a laugh? It’s also a landscaping term!

Harriet is a reader and a writer in a family of more scientific pursuits, a difference which frequently makes her feel like the odd one out – though that’s never her family’s intent. This makes it difficult to believe that Oliver (also a scientist) would be attracted to her for her, not for her inheritance. For his part, Oliver is instantly besotted with Harriet but unwittingly complicates the road to win her heart with some plans that play into her insecurities.

I adored Oliver – he’s respectful, he’s witty, he’s protective but not overbearing, he appreciates Harriet’s strength & personality as much as he does her appearance, and he’s a very swoony kisser (#priorities lol). The author has drawn both characters vividly without outright telling us too much, leaving us to discover their personalities as we walk through the story with them. I loved that we get to see both of their perspectives, too. It added a lot of dimension to Oliver’s character, in particular, and kept the reader on his side even when Harriet believed the worst.

Bottom Line: The Viscount’s Lady Novelist by Alissa Baxter is warm and witty, with swoony romance and engaging characters. Readers will love Oliver and Harriet and will cheer them on as they move closer to a happily-ever-after, despite the obstacles in their way. A dash of suspense adds layers to the story, and the author’s attention to the Regency era in mannerisms, conventions, and language completely immerses you in the narrative. Picking up this book will give you a thoroughly delightful read full of reasons to smile!

What a delightful addition to this series.

Harriet comes across as a much younger heroine than Cassandra was -but is not less delightful.

Oliver is a caring, dutiful, and compassionate hero.

Alissa’s writing is always well research and full of period appropriate phrases.

Readers of proper Regency romance stories are not going to want to miss this!

I received a copy from NetGalley and this is my freely given opinion...

First off... what the heck is a "ha-ha"? As in on page 13, "Lavinia and Mrs. Wynn where heading towards the ha-ha at the other end of the garden..."

Other than that brain teaser, I quite enjoyed this sweet and clean historical romance. This story is about Harriet, the sister of the fossil collector in book 1. Harriet is a novelist and feels a bit of the goose in a pack of ducks because most of her family are naturalists with a love of fossils, geology, insects, etc, and she is clearly not enamoured of such. In fact, she is looked down on by some of her siblings because she has a phobia of insects (caused by some rather cruel teasing by her siblings).

However, because of a shared love of libraries and literature, she has become and heiress and inherited an estate from her uncle, who wanted to leave it to someone who would appreciate his library and book collection. This is a double edged sword though, as Harriet already had her heart broken because of a fortune hunter. This makes her very leery of men and not willing to be hurt again, so she wishes to plan a life of spinsterhood and using her inheritance to help those in need.

However, in the meantime, she has to deal with a house party with her brother's fiancee and her family and a good friend of his, Oliver, Viscount Wentford. Oliver arrives, intending on speaking to the Linfield's patriarch on how to improve his finances, especially with an estate he has inherited near theirs, and to finish a paper with Harriet's brother. He is a fellow naturalist and appears to have a lot in common with her father and her siblings, but less so with her. Regardless, she finds herself reluctantly attracted to him.

Oliver seems very practical and focused on his dealings, including improving his finances. To this plan, he plans on developing a coal mine on his land, as suggested by the male Linfields, as that is part of their financial success; Harriet finds this abhorrent as it will ruin the aspect of the land. Harriet and Oliver seem to be at odds and in disagreement on many things, and seem to be wrong for each other, but Oliver appears to admire her intelligence and independence of thought. But he goes about things backwards, and had actually approached her father with a proposal for a marriage of convenience even before meeting her, so that he could get her inherited estate, as part of his plans for coal mining. Mr. Linfield lets this out of the bag and Harriet is disgusted, thinking he is another fortune hunter. Oliver now has quite the uphill battle to win her affections, as he has come to realize that he truly does want to marry her, not just to get her land.

It does not help that a danger from Harriet's past comes back to threaten her again - but it does prove an opportunity for Oliver to be her hero, and prove not to be be the villain she presumed him to be.

This was a very sweet and well written story. I quite enjoyed the development of their relationship, and the different ways Oliver showed his regard and affection for Harriet, and his appreciation of her as a person, though she was not really able to see it for what it was at first.

4 stars out of 5.

This is the second in the series, following on directly from the end of The Earl and the Lady Geologist, and in many ways it feels like a repeat performance. Once again we have in Harriet a heroine who might be a lady novelist, not a lady geologist, but she’s still not looking for a husband and she’s determined to do her own thing, just like Cassy. And Oliver feels in many ways to be cut from the same cloth as Edward – the strong, silent type, a scientist, approaching marriage as a pragmatic matter of business (more or less). And then there was the irrepressible Mr Anderson bobbing up again.

The plot is very different, though. Harriet is an heiress, having been left a neighbouring estate by a relative. She has plans for it, hoping to use it as an orphanage. Her father is managing it for her, and he has plans, too - he’d like to sell it off to exploit the coal seam that runs underneath. And when Oliver inherits an adjoining estate, he sees Harriet’s inheritance as a useful business. He could buy it, as a pure business proposition, or he could marry Harriet and acquire the estate that way. It’s time he was thinking of marriage, so why not? He approaches Harriet’s father, he agrees it’s a sensible proposition and allows him to get to know Harriet, and if he likes her, to pay his addresses.

The reader, of course, is outraged by this cold, calculating approach to matrimony. What sort of hero is he anyway? Quite a sensible one, actually. He has no intention of coercing Harriet into marriage, his sole objective is to see if he likes her. When he finds that he does indeed like her, rather a lot actually, he begins his cautious courtship. And that seems to be working, right up to the point where Harriet’s father tells her what’s going on. Stupid Papa.

So we have one of those delicious quandaries where the hero is gradually and almost imperceptibly falling in love with the heroine, but she will never believe it because she thinks it’s all a cynical ploy to get hold of her inheritance. Matters are not helped by the fact that in the previous book she fell helplessly in love with an outright scoundrel. So now she doesn’t trust her own judgement, and her self-esteem, already at a low ebb because she’s surrounded by super-scientists who make her feel inadequate, has taken another knock. Poor Harriet! And yet she really, really likes Oliver.

This is just the sort of situation that intrigues me. How will the hero and heroine deal with the unexpectedly difficult situation they’ve wandered into? I didn’t quite expect the way they actually managed it, and it led them even deeper into the quagmire before matters were resolved, with some dramatic moments along the way. However, all came right in the end, and in the most enjoyable manner. A great read, and there’s some lovely humour, too, not to mention the world’s worst poet! Five stars.

I was privileged to beta read this (a whole two years ago!) and later to reread it as a pre-release copy, but my thoughts on the book are entirely my own.

Once again Alissa Baxter has created a story that I found so charming to read. Well, Viscount Oliver reminded me so much of Mr. Knightley, and Harriet (Harry, called by her family and close friends) was enchanting. Their conversations were witty and the whole story just made me feel I was there.

A great addition to the series. You just can't help but love the characters. Harriet, a writer, and heiress becomes the target of many suitors but is the Viscount Oliver that within their not somewhat happy conversations grab at her heart. Despite the fear of not have his heart. Which of course he does. But is a secret that spills out for her safety of a past love that torments her and brings to light for Harriet and Oliver their true feelings for each.

Truly enjoyed this story and received a complimentary ebook copy ARC from the author. All comments here are my own.

Harriet Linfield is a novelist that would like to take her writing in a different direction. But, before she changes her style, she made a decision. Love has eluded her, so focusing on her writing seems her only option. After the death of her husband, she was left an estate, and has made grand plans for it.

She is not the only one with an inheritance. Oliver, Viscount Wentford, also inherited an estate. Just as Harriet has plans, Oliver does as well. It soon becomes apparent that their plans clash. But, Harriet does take an interest in Oliver. Maybe not the interest he imagined. Indeed, she plans on using him as the hero in her next book. While excited at the prospect, something else is going on in Harriet's life. She has an enemy and that just might cause the ruination of all of her plans.

As a connection between Harriet and Oliver begins to form on a visceral level, each of them have to look at both short and long – range plans when it comes to what is growing between them. The fact that their goals truly clash really takes on a different turn when emotions come into play. While having a lot in common, it only seems natural that emotion plays a huge role to the happy future that undoubtedly belonging to the both of them.

Readers will see romance paired with intrigue in this delightful second book in the Linfield Ladies series. While this book definitely could serve well as a standalone novel, reading the first book in the series will give readers a closer look at another strong woman who had a huge fight on her hands for recognition. With love coming into their lives, these fabulous ladies round out their lives.

Many thanks to Vinspire Publishing and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The Viscount’s Lady Novelist
The Linfield Ladies #2
By Alissa Baxter

This is the second in installment in the The Linfield Ladies series, which picks up directly at the ending of The Earl and the Lady Geologist. Harriet Linfield talents lay in the way of literature. Writing is her passion, unlike several in her family who’s interest lay in the scientific, geology and biology. Reeling from a disastrous romantic involvement with the cad Mr Anderson, she has sworn of love and marriage completely. She is also an heiress, in her own right, who has inherited a neighboring estate by a family relative.

Oliver, Viscount Westford has inherited an estate that comes with some hefty debt.
Wanting to acquire Harriet inheritance by buying or acquiring through marriage seems to be his solution. Except one thing, Harriet {Harr} has been given the authority to choose who she wants to marry. She is easily drawn to Oliver, but her nagging fear continues to resurfaces. Untrusting of her intuition when it comes to the genuineness of a gentleman. She struggles with allowing Oliver’s true intentions come to life.

Oh my goodness this was such sweet and delightful Regency romance.
Full of witty banter between both hero and heroine, that I absolutely adored.
Alissa Baxter, captures your full attention from the first page to the very last.
The characters are well written, and the storyline was gratifying as it unfolded.
There are some creative twists along with historical details that made for a lovely reading experience. Readers will also notice upfront that our unsure heroine is able to save herself when certain events arises, I particularly liked this change up.

I highly recommend this book to those who love and enjoy well written clean romance !

The second installment in the Linfield Lady’s series, The Viscount’s Lady Novelist begins as a nearly congenial marriage of convenience story. But author Alissa Baxter has some surprises in store for Oliver, the Viscount of the title, and Harriet, the novelist.

With an on-again-off-again romantic storyline, these two main characters who have little in common - she is decidedly not scientific, where he is - find the road to romance rockily paved with insecurities, financial concerns, fears, and find their ambitions seemingly at cross-purposes.

Once again, Alissa Baxter delivers a delightful Regency with Austen quotes that feel perfectly placed, a lively cast of characters (including a nearly insufferable poet), and a romance mixed with peril that also addresses colonialism, and I loved that there are characters who take a stand to support abolition in the British colonies.

If a Historical Romance that is by turns light-hearted and serious, featuring a bookish, independent minded heroine who has sworn off love, marriage, and is intent on saving herself and a scientist/Viscount who needs to marry, and marry well, is your cup of tea - look no further! As with the first Linfield Ladies novel, The Viscount’s Lady Novelist is a sheer delight.

Recommended.

This is a first time read for me by Ms. Baxter and I can tell you it won't be my last. I am always on the lookout for new Regency authors to follow, and I can definitely tell you that Ms. Baxter will be added to my list. This is the second installment of the series. Harriet is not looking for a husband and is determined to do her own thing. She meets Oliver, and they fast become smitten with each other. Oliver needs to restore his family fortune and when Harriet learns of what his plan entails, she becomes convinced that her and Oliver are not meant to be, as his plans will completely ruin her dreams. But that doesn't take away from the fact that they have such a great connection and chemistry, and the banter between them was such fun to read. The story was well written and entertaining with wonderful plot twists that kept me interested and turning the pages. It was captivating and captured my interest from the start, and I enjoyed reading till the very end. The author does a nice job of really pulling you into the story with her vivid descriptions and attention to detail. You feel as if you are experiencing it all for yourself. The characters were well-developed and interesting and I enjoyed seeing their development throughout the story. A creatively written story that held my interest the whole way through. If you are looking for a charming, proper Regency, then this is one you will definitely want to pick up. I hope to read more from this author soon!

I read this book as an ARC provided by Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op and the author.

The Viscount's Lady Novelist was a sweet regency romance read. This book is perfect if you want to be able to read a romance book in public and not have to stare over you shoulder thinking that someone will judge you for kink. It definitely has more of a Jane Austin feel than Bridgerton, if you know what I mean. But that is really refreshing when you need to cleanse your mind with a non smutty novel. Call it a smut detox if you will. This, by all means, does not mean that the book is boring. The characters are sweet and the plot moves quickly. I really enjoyed the story.

***The text below may include some spoilers***

Harriet Linfield and the Viscount Wentford (Oliver) are now neighbors. Harriet is an unconventional woman for her time. She has "inherited" a small manor from her grandfather and also is working on a novel as an aspiring writer. Oliver has recently inherited an estate next to hers but it requires a lot of repairs and the family coffer is running low. Oliver stays with Harriet and her family. He's a friend of her brother and a geologist. He fits in well with the family as they are all interested in scientific endeavors. Harriet is more interested in her writing and making a romance novel that is much more realistic. There's a lot of tension between the two characters despite them being total opposites.

Interesting business dealings go down between Harriet's father and Oliver in relation to him setting up a new coal mine on Oliver's property. Also, there is some interesting drama with Harriet's toxic ex fiance that threatens a scandal. I won't give any more spoilers, but I really loved the plot.

I don't really have a lot of criticism for this book. I would have liked to know if Harriet ever became a successful writer. That would have been a cool thing to include in a epilogue.

Tropes:
Opposites attract, Sworn Off Relationships, Injury, Damsel in Distress, Marriage Pact also Arranged Marriage, Friends to Lovers, Secrets, Imaginary Love Triangle, Second Chance Romance, Belated love Epiphany

This is a new to me author and reading this book only made me wish that I had the first one in this series already cued up on my Kindle. I enjoyed this story. I loved Oliver. He was really patient and didn't get riled up with Harry and the accusations she made based in her own insecurity. The two of them had some great banter that was fun to read.
In addition to a fun romance, there was intrigue in the story. Truthfully I had the villain figured out early on but it was fun to watch to see how it would play out. There was one twist I wasn't expecting though. One thing I really enjoyed was that the story allowed Harry to save herself from a perilous moment instead of relying on the hero to be heroic. In truth she was endangered three times and he didn't save her in any scenario. He worked behind the scenes and he was also a comfort to her but he wasn't the one to save the day. I liked that.
So yes, I enjoyed reading this book and would love to read the rest of the series, or other books by this author.

*I had to look up what a 'ha-ha' was. Now... how can I use this in everyday speech? "Let's race to the ha-ha at the far side of the garden!"
https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/disc...
A ha-ha is a type of sunken fence that was commonly used in landscaped gardens and parks in the 18th century. The point of the ha-ha was to give the viewer of the garden the illusion of an unbroken, continuous rolling lawn, whilst providing boundaries for grazing livestock.

3.5 stars? I loved the premise of this book! I really loved that she, as an authoress, was going to write him as the villain in her next story. I love a good enemies-to-lovers trope! But it ended up being miscommunication. Over and over. The premise was so good. I loved the first book in this series, so I’m still looking forward to the third book.

This was such a charming Regency romance! Although it’s the second book in The Linfield Ladies series, I haven’t read the first book so it can definitely be read as a standalone. It was full of delightful witty banter, a good dose of humor, a bit of drama, and a few nods to Jane Austen! Harriet was a flawed yet strong and independent heroine and ahead of her time in her views on marriage. I’m always appalled by the way they viewed women and marriage during that time period! Oliver was not on my good side at first, but he turned out to be okay in my book. I really enjoyed this story and the characters, and I’m looking forward to reading more from Alissa Baxter!

Another really good book by this author. I love her unconventional heroines. Oliver and Harriet don’t appear to be compatible but it is surprising what types of things bring them together. Having the threat to Harriet is an added dimension to the story. I also like Harriet’s family as characters. The ending is particularly funny!

A lovely, sweet and clean HR story. Harry (the heroine) seems a bit lame for my taste but it’s understandable since she is artistic whereas the rest of her family are interested in science.
A nice addition to the series but I like the other books more.

Harriet feels different from the rest of her family. They are all interested in science but she is interested in writing novels and reading all kinds of books. Oliver who is the viscount next door but staying with the Linfield family while his home is being updated. He wants a property Harriet owns and she is worried he only is interested in her for her property. This problem has happened before but Oliver is really interested in Harriet. Now he just needs to prove it. Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this story.

This book is pretty good, enjoyable and kept my attention but perhaps lacking in depth. It touches on some interesting ideas for the time period, but doesn't explore them in any depth, which is kind of a shame. It moves along at a steady clip, which I do feel is to the detriment of character development, particular Oliver's. I felt Harriet was better developed with her insecurities and past experiences whereas Oliver is just, well, nice. An enjoyable read all the same, maybe just a hair under 4 stars for me, I received an ARC from the publisher and Netgalley for review.

I loved the first book in this series, but this second one was even better! Great dialogue, wonderful interaction between the lead pair, interesting plot twists, and rich details of Regency society and history. The characters were more fleshed out, and I loved Oliver and Harriet. The notes at the end are also very helpful to the reader.

Ms. Baxter is a really gifted author who stays true to the Regency language and background. She weaves all the tools of her craft seamlessly into the fabric of the story. I read the book with great relish and would happily recommend it to lovers of Regency romance. Lovely read!

I really enjoyed this book. The start was a tiny bit hard for me to get into, but it quickly picked up and held my interest.
The main characters had a lot of ups and downs…. Just when I thought things were going well Oliver would say or do something stupid and they would be mad at each other again. It was fun to have characters that were flawed and didn’t do everything perfectly.
This book had romance, humor, mystery and best of all… a happy ending.
This author really has a way with words. I had to look up a few phrases (because I’m a nerd and like to know exactly what things mean).
I have read the first book in this series and reading it first added to the enjoyment of this one but things were explained well enough in #2 that you could read it as a stand-alone.
I can’t wait for more from this author!

𝗕𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗯

Harriet Linfield is a lady novelist who has been disillusioned by love. She sets out to write more realistic tales about the emotion when she returns home to Linfield Court for the summer. Vowing to avoid any romantic entanglements along the way, she focuses instead on her writing and her plan to turn the estate she inherited from her uncle into a refuge for orphans.

Oliver, Viscount Wentford, is determined to restore his family fortunes.

When an enemy comes back into Harriet’s life, she sees that love isn’t as clear-cut as the romantic tales she pens. But will the viscount manage to discard his villainous mantle to become Harriet’s real-life hero?

𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄

Will she let her first heartbreak taint her future …

I was fun to read a bit of a reverse version of the first book, this time, it is the heroine who is no scholar, in the meaning of the term she has no interest in sciences, but she, like her siblings and relatives, is a well educated miss, probably beyond what was expected from a woman in her era.
But here, it is the struggles of the heart and her differences with her brothers and sisters which are addressed.
After being fooled by a man who saw her as a means to an end, she, in her young inexperienced heart, believes she can not trust herself anymore to make the right choice of a suitable match.
So when a suitor of many qualities, a kind disposition and an attractive mind enters the fray, she prefers to see him for the villain she wants him to be when she learns of his ulterior motives before meeting her. It easier than accepting his suit which would derail all her well thought plans, plus it protect her heart from more heartache if she is once more wrong.
Oliver came to Harriet’s family estate to meet the woman owning the estate he is interested to acquire before making any decision, and while she pleases even more than he expected, his courting is upended when she learns of the reason behind their encounter. She immediately dismisses him as a bad fellow, one of the fortune hunters who will look at her only for her “dowry”. Plus when a threat from her past surges, he is torn between protecting and wooing the girl, when she wants to keep him at arm-length.

Oh my!
How I laughed at the condescending awful poet one of the many side characters. Balancing between bashing his skull for his derelict view of the female mind or rolling my eyes at his poor attempt at poetry, nature dotted him with a pretty appearance but such a poorer mind.

I loved Oliver, he has his faults but he is a man who does not rush things, he has his mind sets on what he wants, but he ponders his options before making a choice, courting Harriet became the right road for him only after he met and fell for her. Harriet demanded a bit more work from my side to warm to her, she is very young maybe why I thought her sometimes foolish and childish, but she grew on me when she finally demonstrated she could stand for herself and accepts she had been wrong, to acknowledge her failings.

The Viscount’s Lady Novelist
The Linfield Ladies #2
By Alissa Baxter

Harriet Linfield is an oddity in her family, where their interests and passions run towards the scientific hers runs towards the artistic. She is soon to have her London Season though she has little use for one now. Her heart was broken, and she has sworn off marriage and romance. And now, she doubts not only herself but the interest of any man.

When her brother's friend Viscount Wentford becomes their guest, Harriet is more than a little displeased. The last thing she wants is an eligible man breaching the safety and tranquility of her home and her life. And his interest in her is soon tempered when she decides that he, too, is just another fortune hunter.

Oliver is more than a little delighted to make the acquaintance of Harriet. She is well-studied and an excellent conversationalist. If only she could believe she has merit to attract attention that is not based on what wealth she'll bring to a marriage. Unfortunately, their first encounter is less than stellar, with Harriet viewing him as the newest villain in her life. But when the man who broke her heart and threatened her family is observed nearby, Harriet's resolve to distance herself from Oliver is tested. Can she ever trust herself or any gentleman ever again? Harriet is about to find out.

The Viscount's Lady Novelist is a delightful and enjoyable clean read. It is the second book in the Linfield Ladies series, but it can easily be read as a standalone title. This is the perfect weekend getaway from the comfort of your favorite reading corner. A sweet read that I recommend if you a looking for something with a touch of romance and historical fiction.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts expressed are my own.

When Oliver inherited his own estate, it came with lots of debts, and the best way to pay them is to buy the neighbouring estate and dig for coal. Or is it? When he learns that the owner is a young lady, he considers marrying her instead, as long as they suit. Having inherited an estate from her uncle, Harriet plans excitedly to turn it into a beautiful orphan asylum. She's been disappointed in what she believed to be love before, and has no intention of being taken in again. So when Oliver turns up and tries to flirt, she's far from receptive. An attraction grows between them nevertheless - but when a true villain comes back into her life and Harriet and Oliver's plans conflict, will it be enough?

The idea of Harriet being a novelist sounded intriguing, but it actually came into the story less than I expected. Harriet and Oliver made for an interesting couple, though it was a pity that they seemed to take the entire book to learn how to start communicating. I think I would have enjoyed the story more if it could have been based on more than just constant non- or mis-communication. Nevertheless, there were some very touching moments, especially as Harriet gradually began to overcome various misconceptions based on her past. A clean, reasonably well written story, with a touch of suspense in with the romance, and characters I cared about. I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous book I read by the author, but I still hope to read more in future.

Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.

I didn't read the blurb about the book, so I wasn't sure what to expect from the story. For the first third to half of the book, it seemed like your typical Regency type romance story. It was fine. But then after that point, more of a plot became apparent. From the on, I liked it much more. A solid 4 star story!

The author definitely puts a lot of research into her books. I wish the audio had an author's notes section. I don't know if the ebook does. It would be very interesting to hear more about some of the terms and events mentioned.

I listened to the audiobook. I was torn. The narrator did a very good job with reading and characters. I just wasn't a huge fan of her voice. She sounded like an older lady. I even had to Google her to see what she looked like in real life. Then there were some technical issues. A couple of times there were editing mistakes where the same phrase was read twice. I could hear baxknground noise at other times. And the most annoying thing was something with the narrator's mouth. Sometimes it sounded like she was chewing in gum or had a lisp or swallowed.or something. It was annoying, especially when I was listening with my ear buds. It all could have been in the editing. The narrator is talented.

I want to thank the author and publisher for gifting me an audio copy of the book. I'm happy to leave an honest review.

The Viscount's Lady Novelist is a Regency era historical novel. It features Harriet Linfield, who plans to have a life as a writer and set her estate up as an orphanage for children in need. These plans are thwarted when she is courted by Oliver, Viscount Wentford, who wants to marry her and mine coal on the estate. Sparks fly despite this, and despite the differences in Harriet's creative temperament and Oliver as a man of science. Will a romance work between them?

I wanted to read this novel because it is the second in the Linfield Ladies Series. I absolutely loved the first book in the series, The Earl's Lady Geologist. This novel is similar in tone and structure, and it was a fun continuation of the series.

My favorite thing about this novel (and the series in general) is the strength and intelligence of the protagonist. She wants far more out of life than a woman in the Regency period expects. I also enjoyed the interplay between Harriet and Oliver, who connect but also who are very different people.

The Viscount's Lady Novelist started a bit slowly for me but quickly picked up speed, and I enjoyed the read. I recommend this novel for fans of historical fiction, historical romance, and anyone who enjoys a Regency setting.

This book is the second in a series, but it can be read as a stand-alone, as I have not read the first one. The book begins with a marriage-of-convenience (one of my favorite tropes). Harriet Linfield is a writer who has been disappointed in love, so she writes realistic books about it. She returns home to Linfield Court to spend the summer with plans to focus on her writing and turn her inherited estate into a safe space for orphans.

Oliver, Viscount Wentford, needs to restore his family's coffers, but his plans go against what Harriet plans to do and their estates border one another. Upon meeting her, he thinks it's funny when she plans to model her next book's villain on him. It changes when things happen in his actual life to make him appear in a bad light..

They don't initially have a lot in common, but they are thrown together when an enemy of Harriet comes back onto the scene. I liked the development of the plot and the fact characters talk about the downside of colonialism without glossing over it. I also loved how Oliver's character developed and grew as the story progressed.

I thought that this was a good example of an historical novel incorporating true facts. The setting, in Somerset, was accurately described. For the early 1800s that is. Some of the small villages are now suburbs of Bristol including the Quaker built village and the folly castle. So if the reader wanted to visit the countryside described in the novel they could, even though the views would be different.
You can still purchase Bristol diamonds too but would need to check carefully their origin.
The historical context considering Wilberforce and slavery abolition and not using women or children in mines was also factual.
Now as to the actual writing style and characterisations they were of the standard and type expected. There were no major grammatical òr other proof reading errors. The length of the story gave enough room to develop the various characters but I found the ending rather abrupt. There was tension and suspicious incidents through the story until suddenly the villain appeared and was apprehended in a remarkably short time. This took away, for me, some of the enjoyment.
But a nice story overall.

This book was so sweet! I hadn’t read any of the author’s other works so I didn’t know what to expect when I first started this novel. However I was very pleasantly surprised! This book kept a smile on my face the whole time and was so enjoyable.

The romance in this novel is probably the closest thing to an Austen romance that I have read in historical fiction. I loved that the love grew over time and out of mutual respect. Henrietta was a little dense at times, I kept wanting her just to see that Oliver loved her, rather than questioning everything. However the ending made me so happy, it was just the sweetest romance ever.

This book wasn’t that plot heavy, but it got a little bonkers at the latter half which was very fun to read. I liked the more character based story that focused on interactions. I also loved all the references to gothic fiction.

Once again I really liked this book! I will be reading the first book in the series and continuing it when next books come out!!
