Sometimes, as I'm thinking about my faith and church in general, it will occur to me that the way we practice Christianity in 2025 probably looks pretty different from the way it was practiced in, say, 125. This book is a call to Christians to get back to the basics of our faith. It was a good reminder to go back to the Bible to keep us from losing our way. Some things I marked:

* "We are called to an everlasting preoccupation with God." (A. W. Tozer)

* "The world can seem overwhelming in its brokenness to someone sensitive to humanity and (who) has any amount of empathy for how God feels about the world."

* "...we are not called to have popular speakers or attractive sermon titles. Christ was the focus of the Ancient faith that should be expressed in the same way in our day."

* "In everything the Apostles did, they thought of God and lived in constant devotion to Him. This spiritual state was their unceasing prayer." (St Basil the Great)

* "There is so much teaching and messaging we hear about God's love for us. These messages are absolutely true, but who has ever heard of message on God's concern for our love for Him? Jesus weeps for lost humanity and has deep sorrow for all the sings. But who weeps for Jesus and shares His sorrows and empathizes for Him? Who comforts Him in his pain?"

The author emphasizes the importance of the sign of the cross, the liturgical year, and the hours of prayer. Not having been raised in a liturgical church, many of these were new to me, and yet reading about them made sense. He suggests praying the Lord's prayer multiple times daily, for "in the Lord's Prayer you have worship, intimacy, praise, intercession, petition, confession, provision, and protection."

I enjoyed this book and found it full of good and convicting thoughts about living a life for Christ.

I didn’t know much about the Apostolic Church before I read this book. I now have a renewed respect for the liturgical practices and the Biblical truths that inspired this book.

Sadly, the modern church has moved away from many of the foundational beliefs and practices that we see in the Book of Acts.

I received this book free from the author, publisher, or other source. My only obligation is to provide a fair and honest review.

This was an interesting book of the historical first century church but veered off into proselytizing for a denomination that I had never heard of, The Church of St. Thomas. Most of the rules of worship I agreed with but not the bowing at the altar nor women wearing head coverings.

Greg Gordon’s An Ancient Worship Movement thoughtfully explores Christian theology, delving deeply into the multifaceted nature of worship. From actions and evangelism to prayer and communion, the book illuminates how worship was understood and practiced in the early church.

Gordon’s intent is evident from the outset: to guide readers toward emulating the authentic roots of the Christian faith. The opening prayer in the introduction immediately sets the tone, drawing attention to Christ rather than the author. This framing underscores his desire to prioritize spiritual reflection over personal interpretation. Throughout the book, Gordon critiques how the modern church has drifted from its original focus, yet his approach remains analytical and constructive rather than harsh or judgmental. This balanced critique enriches the reading experience and invites thoughtful engagement.

One standout section of the book examines worship through communion. Gordon provides fascinating insights into what a church service might have looked like over 2,000 years ago, highlighting the centrality of communion in early Christian gatherings. He also explores how the early church approached this sacred practice, challenging readers to reflect on their own perspectives and practices regarding the holy sacrament.

The section on prayer, however, left the strongest impression. Gordon emphasizes the critical role of prayer in the early church and offers practical guidance for readers looking to deepen their spiritual lives. This portion of the book includes a selection of prayers, which readers can incorporate into their daily routines, adding a hands-on element to the theological discussions.

An Ancient Worship Movement strikes a compelling balance between depth and accessibility. The writing avoids over-explaining, maintaining a pace that keeps the reader engaged. For anyone interested in Christian theology or eager to learn about the early church’s practices, this book is a valuable and inspiring resource.

In this book the author takes us back to the beginning when worship started. I liked how detailed the book is as we glimpse different times in the Bible. Praise and Worship is a time when I can focus on Him. My hands go up and I’m lost in His presence. The author explains that the early Church wanted to reach everyone with the Gospel. Their hearts were to help those who didn’t know who Jesus was. We need to catch the vision of the early Church which was to be missionaries. Are we sometimes uncomfortable sharing Jesus with others?

The book offers an in-depth look at the beginning and encourages us to fix our eyes on Him. Over the years some churches have lost their focus. They seek man’s approval. We must be the Church that worships God and wants to follow Him. When we turn away from Him, the enemy can come in and divide us. “The early Church Fathers were intensely Christ centered.”

We must remember that the “cross is an emblem not only for suffering but of victory.” Everytime I see a cross, it reminds me that our sins are forgiven and we are set free. Jesus loves us so much that He made the ultimate sacrifice. Martin Luther taught all his followers to “make the sign of the cross a sacramental symbol and reminder of the Lord’s possession of His people in the Gospel.”

I would encourage readers to take their time as they read the book and perhaps take notes to look back at. I like the many scriptures that are used to show references the author uses as we are guided through history. With Biblical figures and well known ones from history we see a clear picture of what it was like in ancient times of worship.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

The book „An Ancient Worship Movement” by Greg Gordon is a profound invitation for believers to rediscover the authenticity and power of Christian worship through the lens of the faith and practices of the early Church. The author explores the connection between ancient worship traditions and the Church's present-day calling to be a witness of God in a modern world filled with spiritual confusion.

In the introduction, Gordon examines how the desire for worship has been ingrained in human nature since creation, from Adam to moments of apostasy and return to God throughout human history. The book highlights that, regardless of the Church's condition over the centuries, the call to worship remains constant and open to everyone.
The author's personal and compassionate tone is a distinctive aspect of the book. Gordon encourages readers to enter into a deeper relationship with God by renouncing sin and spiritual complacency. Through examples such as the church of Laodicea and quotes from Oswald Chambers, he reiterates that Jesus continues to "knock at the door," waiting to be welcomed into people's hearts.

„An Ancient Worship Movement” is more than just a book; it is a spiritual guide for those seeking a deeper understanding of authentic Christian faith. The author's recommendation to study this book in small groups, with discussions and prayer, underscores its value as a resource for discipleship and spiritual growth.

“An Ancient Worship Movement” by Greg Gordon / St. Thomas Church is a very serious, carefully written book, highly researched and footnoted, with an important message about ways one can find God and develop a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

In general, this book takes a deep look into the history and evolution of the Catholic Church and its practices, delves into early movements and heresies, and studies how the Church evolved from the days of Jesus and the Apostles.

Of great interest, later in the book, are instructions on how to pursue one’s Christian faith by following the methods of a newer movement that adheres to some of the older practices, The St. Thomas Church movement.

There should be something of value found in these writings for everybody.

Scripture references are abundant, at times repetitive and a little overwhelming. Unfortunately, the overall work plods along with very little energy or sparkle. Organization is also a bit lacking as the reader travels no clear, logical path working through this book, making these important messages confusing and a bit hard to digest.

But overall, this is a work certainly well worth several hours to help enrich one’s faith journey.

Reviving Early Church Practices for Modern Believers...

"An Ancient Worship Movement" presents a compelling exploration of early Christian worship practices and their relevance in today's contemporary church landscape. The author skillfully bridges the gap between historical Christian traditions and modern spiritual needs, offering readers practical insights for deepening their relationship with God. Through careful examination of pre-denominational practices, the book provides a framework for authentic worship that transcends contemporary church programming and entertainment-focused services.

The strength of this work lies in its practical application, seamlessly combining theological depth with actionable guidance for implementing these ancient practices in personal and communal settings. While particularly valuable for those interested in house church ministry, the book's emphasis on intimate worship and spiritual renewal makes it relevant for any believer seeking to enrich their faith journey. The comprehensive appendices provide additional historical context and practical resources that enhance the book's utility as a guide for spiritual transformation.

An Ancient Worship Movement by Greg Gordon is a Christian work. This book illustrates how ancient worship practices of the past fit into modern Christianity. With practical applications, this book resonated with me. At the end of each chapter the author provides a detailed list of references you can look up and use as a starting point for an in-depth study.

This book provides excellent insight into the worship and liturgical practices of the ancient church while providing connections to present day worship. Because of the depth and breadth of this book, I recommend examining the book for yourself to determine if you will appreciate reading it.

The book helps illustrate how many churches of today have moved away from the Biblical teachings and practices illustrated in the book of Acts. This book allows the reader to experience those teachings and determine how to incorporate them into their spiritual life today.

So if you want a Christian book, check out An Ancient Worship Movement by Greg Gordon.

I received a complimentary copy of this book, but this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.

Christian Living Books are a genre that are an important part of my Christian life. An Ancient Worship Movement by Greg Gordon, St. Thomas Church is the most recent book in this genre that I have read.

I was intrigued by the book from the moment I started reading the book. The author really touches on how the Church has gotten away from the way the Early Beginning of Church and Worship. I grew up in a Church where we sang from a Hymnal and we worshipped God with Praise and Joy. The Early Church ways really was a time of Individual Growth and Intimate Relationship with God. The Modern Church ways seem to be more of a Corporate Worship and Fellowship time. The book isn't just a "book to read" but more of an invitation to Individuals and churches to bring back to Individual Worship and Growth. I really enjoyed this book and the "Invitation" given to Christians in today's society. I would recommend this book to those who feel lost in the Modern Church and are looking for growth in Worship with God. GOOD BOOK!

With engaging storytelling and meticulous research, it brings to life a rich spiritual heritage, showing how faith and devotion have shaped worship practices over time. The writing is both accessible and inspiring, making historical details feel relevant and meaningful for modern readers. I truly enjoyed how it was able to be read very easily, from chapter of interest to chapter of interest. More than just a history lesson, this book offers a profound connection to the past, reminding us that worship is not just about tradition but about a living, breathing faith. It invites reflection on how ancient practices continue to influence and inspire today’s spiritual journey. This movement calls believers back to their roots of the early church. Gordon does a good job of reviewing early heresies and suggests heresies abound today. Some of the particular features include encouraging readers to have a heart for the lost and to hold to the centrality of Jesus in worship. Some surprises for me were encouragement to observe the liturgical year, make the sign of the cross, understand the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist, and infant baptism. There are good lessons on prayer with several historical prayers included.

This is a good book for Christians who are interested in how the early church worshiped or are looking to evaluate their own worship.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

I picked up this book largely because it had a fascinating title and it was free. I assumed based on the back cover that this would be about what the ancient church practiced. Not simply the stance of St Thomas Church. There is interesting content, but any claims the author makes are not adequately supported for those from outside the faith traditions of St Thomas Church. This book is not REALLY about the what the ancient faith of the apostles was. It’s an attempt to explain that St Thomas Church follows the ancient faith of the apostles.
It was interesting. Lots of footnotes, but vague enough ones that I really can’t verify that they actually say what the author claims. The name of a church father isn’t enough for me, being unfamiliar with all their works/teachings.

"An Ancient Worship Movement" by Greg Gordon, St. Thomas Church is a call to Christians to get back to the basics of our faith, the Bible along with prayer and drawing close to God and really knowing and having a personal relationship with Jesus. There are historical prayers included. This is a great book that really includes lots of Scripture for the points the author makes. This is a good book to read more than once.
