Aphrodite, stereotype or feminist icon? An awesome new title exploring identity, mythology and stereotypes.
Aphrodite is a celebrated figure deeply connected with beauty, sexuality and love in ancient myth – but do we really know who she is and what she stands for? A captivating Greek goddess, who according to popular myth was born from sea foam, she is as fascinating now as she was then to both Gods and mortals. A powerful, multifaceted woman with a story as deep as the ocean from which perhaps she came, she is often erroneously presented as a fertility goddess, but she is certainly sensual, sexual and even maternal. With new stories from submissions and a long, commissioned introduction examining the ancient tales and the impact on culture and society, this is an awesome new title in the Myths, Gods and Immortals series, exploring misrepresentations and inventing exciting new character stories.
I just love this series. I am not sure why. It could absolutely be a good mix of how the series is built up and the chosen ones who get a book of their own in this series. I started with Loki (or Loke as I grew up with), and I was sold.
Back to Aphrodite, of course, I could not do my Valentine's Reads series without her. I had no idea that she was the daughter of Gaia, nor that she fought in the Trojan war. This underestimated goddess is so fascinating. There is so much more than just being the goddess of love and beauty that she might be known as today.
You probably noticed the list of the amazing contributors to the book. Now this is really fun. There is a selection of stories of Aphrodite in more modern times.
Now, why the 5⭐️? For me, it was the experience of the book. I am not going to lie, I love the cover and sprayed edges, too. Was every single story or sentence 5 stars? Maybe not, still, I loved this experience. The story behind our goddess is so interesting. The time she roamed ancient Greece and saved sailors is intriguing, and I think I am not the only one who can relate to being underestimated.😉
Okay… first things first: this book is absolutely stunning.
The cover, the design, the whole Flame Tree Myths, Gods and Immortals series is pure shelf candy and I’m totally obsessed.
This volume dives deep into Aphrodite but not just the “goddess of beauty and love” stereotype we all think we know. Instead, it explores her complexity: sensual, sexual, maternal, powerful, and often misrepresented. Was she a stereotype, or could she actually be seen as a feminist icon?
The collection blends retellings of ancient myths with new stories submitted from writers all over the world, and together they bring a fresh, multi layered perspective on one of mythology’s most famous figures.
If like me, you love Greek myths, feminist reinterpretations, or just gorgeous mythology books for your shelf, this one’s a must have. 5 stars from me 🌊✨
I really liked the short stories, some that incorporate more modern themes and others from further back in time. It was interesting to learn more about Aphrodite and all the different names and characters she’s gone by and known to be depending on which group of people you talk to. I haven’t read too much about Greek mythology but am somewhat familiar with a majority of the gods. I wouldn’t mind reading other books in this series about other Greek gods.
