This was an extremely discomforting read. I found this extremely interesting at first having listened to the first few episodes of the Literature and History podcast on cuneiform and Gilgamesh. I appreciate her explanation of what was real/creative license at the end, for this troubled me while reading.

I had no idea what to expect going into this. There are a lot of hot topics somewhat addressed in this, though moreso brought to light than explored. I enjoyed Arthur's storyline the most (at the very least until romance got introduced). I expected everything to come together at the end, though I didn't expect how exactly it happened. I knew so little of the tragedies that occurred.

Started and finished this on my way back from New Orleans (SWE conference). I was first drawn to this for its beautiful cover. I saw it as a jump the queue book, but it was about 2-3x longer than the jump the queue books I typically commit to. Then I saw it in a bookstore near campus, looked up reviews, and became excited to read it (historical fiction? yes please).

I feel like if I had a physical copy there are many lines I would have underlined. The writing is beautiful, and important issues are handled well (in my opinion). Unfortunately my experience reading this just wasn't very pleasant. I had little regard for the characters other than Arthur, and the older Arthur grew the less interested I was. I guess the most interesting points for me were 1) the exploration of ancient Mesopotamian history, 2) the exploration of familial relationships/gratitude/indebtedness, and 3) life guiding passion.

An immensely moving novel that even transcends all its important commentary on history, the disappearance of precious human cultures as well as environments, and its wonderful cast of characters, some very nuanced and some recognizable in other current literature. This novel also illustrates the modern rapprochement between a strict observance of good scientific principles with a dose of mysticism and even magic.
